Twenty-one clients of the program, seven subjects in each of phases I, II, and III, were given the 16 PF by their counselors between September 10 and …
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Some Arylalkenyl And Arylepoxyalkyl Hydrogen Succinates And Hydrogen Glutarates As Inhibitors Of Rat Liver Β-Hydroxy-Β-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Reductase, Paul Emil Marecki
Theses and Dissertations
Atherosclerotic disease is an almost universal phenomenon and increases in severity and frequency with increasing age. Atherosclerosis may contribute to several disorders including bursting of an artery, blockage of an artery, or induction of arterial clotting. The culmination of these diseases is usually premature since at the time of death the unaffected organs are in reasonably satisfactory condition and could have operated for several more years. Among the many factors which act in concert to produce the disease, serum cholesterol levels play a central role. It has been suggested that the lowering of cholesterol levels will provide an effective means …
Activation Of The Gamma Motor System In The Cat Following Selective Stimulation Of The Motor Cortex And The Pyramidal Tract, James Elliott Forbes
Activation Of The Gamma Motor System In The Cat Following Selective Stimulation Of The Motor Cortex And The Pyramidal Tract, James Elliott Forbes
Theses and Dissertations
Until the mid to late 1800's, the cerebral hemispheres were considered to be only the sites of mentation and intellectual activity. On the basis of his observations of epileptic patients, HughIings Jackson (cited from Walshe, l935a) theorized that the cerebral hemispheres were also sites of motor control and sensory experience. The electrical excitability of the cerebrum was first demonstrated by Fritsch and Hitzig in 1870. Since then the motor representation of the various muscles has been mapped out and the types of movement in response to stimulation of the motor cortex and the pyramidal tract have been thoroughly studied.

Clustering And Subjective Organization Of Free Recall Learning, Sandra Gail Harrell Fenner
Clustering And Subjective Organization Of Free Recall Learning, Sandra Gail Harrell Fenner
Theses and Dissertations
Two concepts, clustering and subjective organization, have figured prominently in theoretical explanations of free recall learning. With lists composed of categorized words (e.g., animals, vegetables, occupations), subjects tend to order recall by categories, which tendency is called clustering. There is much experimental evidence for a relationship between clustering and amount recalled, as recall and clustering have been shown to increase with repeated presentations of the material. Curiously, there is some evidence that the degree of clustering seems to be uncorrelated with recall scores, that is, subjects who cluster strongly do not recall more words than subjects who cluster less strongly …

Light And Electron Microscopy Investigation Of Developing Wheat Caryopses Infected By Tilletia, Melvin Douglas Grove
Theses and Dissertations
Caryopses of wheat were studied during infection by Tilletia caries and T. controversa. Initially the pathogens penetrated embryos of the host. After the embryo tissue was consumed by the fungi, endosperm tissue was penetrated and consumed. Initial penetration of endosperm tissue was in localized areas. During infection the fungus mycelium spread intercellularly, but occasionally was seen intracellularly. As the host tissue was consumed teliospores were formed. At maturity a host cell layer 4-6 cells thick remained which retained the mature teliospores. Histochemical studies indicated that carbohydrates and lipids of the host disappeared soon after invasion by the pathogens. Nuclei and …

Interaction Between Triiodothyronine (T₃) And Thyroxine (T₄) In The Chick And The Rat, Kurtis George Cornish
Interaction Between Triiodothyronine (T₃) And Thyroxine (T₄) In The Chick And The Rat, Kurtis George Cornish
Theses and Dissertations
The secretion of two hormones with identical function by the thyroid gland has been questioned, What is the relationship between these two hormones? Why does the thyroid secrete two hormones when either one can provide for all the activity of the thyroid (Greer, 1972). Little work has been done on the relationship between the two hormones. There is some evidence showing that thyroxine (T4) is deiodinated to triiouothyronine (T3) at the tissue level in mammals. Chambers (1970) found that there was a negative interaction between T4 and T3 when pharmacologic doses were administered to the rat. The present study was …

The Effect Of Information And Experience On Preference For Complexity, Stanley Richard Gunn
The Effect Of Information And Experience On Preference For Complexity, Stanley Richard Gunn
Theses and Dissertations
One area of research that has received a great deal of empirical and theoretical attention is preference for complexity. Two major conclusions may be drawn from a survey of the relevant literature in this area. First, there is a greater preference for the intermediate ranges of complexity than for the extreme levels, and secondly, preference for complexity is a function of the interaction of both stimulus and subject variables. The role of stimulus variables in preference for complexity has been repeatedly studied. This is also true of the subject variable "experience," which is usually defined in terms of the subject's …
Psychogenic Factors In Menstrual Symptomology, Glen Gruba
Psychogenic Factors In Menstrual Symptomology, Glen Gruba
Theses and Dissertations
In this study correlations were obtained between personality characteristics and menstrual manifestations in order to test the following psychogenic hypotheses regarding the etiology of menstrual symptomatology: (1) dependence, as a personality characteristic, is basic to the elaboration of moderate or severe menstrual symptoms, (2) a psychosomatic process, involving psychic control over somatic functions, underlies certain forms of menstrual symptomatology, and (3) menstrual symptoms, particularly as they are more pronounced, represent exacerbations of prevailing personality patterns.
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ, which contains eight menstrual symptom scales) were administered to 60 female university students …
