New Hope: A Mormon Colony In Central California, Clint Mccready Jan 1976

New Hope: A Mormon Colony In Central California, Clint Mccready

Theses and Dissertations

New Hope was a small Mormon agricultural community in Central California. It was founded in 1846, by Samuel Brannan, on the hope that Brigham Young would make it the center stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The approximately twenty farmers at New Hope labored diligently under the illusion that thousands of their brethren would shortly join them. When President Young decided to settle in the Great Basin, the New Hope settlement was terminated that same year: 1847.

Orem, Utah: A Study In Urban Land Use, George G. Shaw Jan 1976

Orem, Utah: A Study In Urban Land Use, George G. Shaw

Theses and Dissertations

Orem, Utah, is a rapidly growing city that is changing from rural to urban land uses. A present inventory of land is important in determining the land use characteristics of the city, the degree of development, and future use of land. A field survey was made of the city and the resultant land use information was computerized for data analysis.

Although Orem City is rapidly changing to urban uses, the city is still largely undeveloped, especially when compared to major urban centers. Agriculture is still the most dominant use of land comprising almost thirty-nine percent of the city. Approximately forty …

Prostaglandin Synthesis In The Feline Adrenal Cortex, Suzanne Gale Laychock Jan 1976

Prostaglandin Synthesis In The Feline Adrenal Cortex, Suzanne Gale Laychock

Theses and Dissertations

Studies were carried out on the feline adrenal gland to ascertain the role of prostaglandins in the mechanism of action of ACTH. Using tritiated arachidonic acid as a prostaglandin (PG) precursor , it was demonstrated by column and thin layer chromatography techniques that isolated trypsinized adrenocortical cells possess an active PG synthetase capable of synthesizing radiolabeled PGE, PGF, and PGA/B-like substances. Concentrations of ACTH (125 - 250 μU) which stimulate steroidogenesis enhanced the conversion of radiolabeled arachidonic acid to PGE, PGF and the PGA/B products extracted from cortical cells and incubation media.

PG biosynthesis by isolated cortical cells was …

Incorporation Of Phosphoproteins And Phenol-Bound Proteins Into The Cuticle Of Periplaneta Americana, Joseph Atchison Florence Iv Jan 1976

Incorporation Of Phosphoproteins And Phenol-Bound Proteins Into The Cuticle Of Periplaneta Americana, Joseph Atchison Florence Iv

Theses and Dissertations

The incorporation of phosphoproteins and phenol-bound proteins into the cuticle of Periplaneta americana was analyzed. Radioactive monosodium phosphate was injected into newly ecdysed cockroaches. Incorporation into haemolymph proteins as well as tanned cuticle was observed. Phosphoproteins were observed to be combined with the cuticle to a greater extent than monosodium phosphate. This suggests that phosphate is being incorporated into the cuticle more readily than monosodium phosphate. The relevance of these observations is discussed in light of phosphate being a possible crosslinking agent between chitin and cuticle protein.

Binding of dopamine metabolites to cuticle proteins was investigated. Specific metabolites studied were …

The Impact Of Polygamy Upon The Life Of James Yorgason: A Nineteenth-Century Mormon Bishop, Blaine M. Yorgason

Theses and Dissertations

On August 2, 1875, James Yorgason, soon to be the Bishop of the Fountain Green Utah Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, took his first plural wife. In doing so he joined a rather elite group of Mormon men who were known as polygamists. Over the next thirteen years, as he built a financial empire to support them, he took five more plural wives, making him exceptional even among the elite.
But then in 1887 the Edmunds-Tucker law was passed and "The Raid" against Mormon polygamists began, the United States entered a time of monetary crisis …

The Effects Of Chronic Anaerobic Infection On Atherosclerosis In Rabbits, Janet Smitheran Bissell Jan 1976

The Effects Of Chronic Anaerobic Infection On Atherosclerosis In Rabbits, Janet Smitheran Bissell

Theses and Dissertations

Arterial disease is virtually a universal entity in man. Some cultures, such as the African Bantus have very little in the way of vascular lesions, while in the United States and other industrialized nations atherosclerosis affects a large segment of the population. With this in mind it is not hard to understand why ischemia, or arteriosclerotic heart disease, is second only to cardiovascular diseases in general as the major cause of death in the United States (4, 42).

Ruffer (112) noted the presence of arterial lesions in Egyptian mummies dating back 3,400 years. The presence of atherosclerotic lesions has also …

Efficacy Of Bunamidine Hydrochloride Against Immature And Mature Stages Of Echinococcus Granulosus, Lauritz A. Jensen Dec 1975

Efficacy Of Bunamidine Hydrochloride Against Immature And Mature Stages Of Echinococcus Granulosus, Lauritz A. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of bunamidine hydrochloride against the immature and mature stages of Echinococcus granulosus found in Utah. Twenty-seven dogs were obtained from local animal shelters and experimentally infected with the parasite. The drug was given at dosage levels of 25 mg/kg to 50 mg/kg of bodyweight. It was from 85.9 to 98.8% effective against the immature stage, and 100% effective against the adult stage. The results suggest that this drug can feasibly be used under field conditions where hydatid disease is endemic.

The Selective Retention Of Favorable, Neutral, And Unfavorable Statements About Men And Women Measured By Signal Detection, Ronald L. Matthew Dec 1975

The Selective Retention Of Favorable, Neutral, And Unfavorable Statements About Men And Women Measured By Signal Detection, Ronald L. Matthew

Theses and Dissertations

The selective retention hypothesis states that people tend to remember information which is consistent with their attitudes and forget information which is contrary to their attitudes. This hypothesis has been shown to depend upon such factors as the sex of the subject, ego-involvement, the function that learning the material may serve for the subject, the nature of the audience to whom one must communicate, the affective nature of the material, prior familiarity with the material, and the cognitive structure of the subject.

The present study is an attempt to further explore the role of affective material and cognitive structure as …

The smears were classified as anestrus , proestrus , estrus or metestrus on the basis of the four cell types and other smear characteristics . The reproductive behavior in captive mountain lions, bobcats, and lynx was also analyzed and the relationship between vagi- nal smear types and …

Charles Alexander Eastman One Man's Journey In Two Worlds, David Reed Miller Dec 1975

Charles Alexander Eastman One Man's Journey In Two Worlds, David Reed Miller

Theses and Dissertations

The recent historical resurgence in the study of American Indian culture has again revived an interest in the writings of Dr. Charles Alexander Eastman (Santee Dakota, 1858-1939). Dr. Eastman's life epitomized the struggle of American Indians to gain white educations and positions in white society at the close of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. American history has failed to recognize many American Indian leaders of achievement and importance, and this study intends to illuminate the details of Charles Eastman's active and diverse life.

Charles Eastman was born near Redwood Falls in the camp of his great-grandfather, Cloudman. …

The Effects Of Learned Helplessness Upon Appetitive Responding, Thomas R. Foster Aug 1975

The Effects Of Learned Helplessness Upon Appetitive Responding, Thomas R. Foster

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of learned helplessness and its relationship to depression were discussed. It was concluded that if learned helplessness was a valid experimental model for depression it should have detrimental effects on positively reinforced behavior. A number of rats were divided into two yoked groups and these two groups were put on the same food deprivation schedule. The animals were then trained in an aversive situation in a shuttle box. One group received escape training and one group received helplessness training. The yoked pairs received the same mean time of shock exposure. Approximately 24 hours later, both groups were tested …

Dependency Attachment And Exploration: Their Interrelationships In One-Year-Old Children, Elizabeth S. Baraga Aug 1975

Dependency Attachment And Exploration: Their Interrelationships In One-Year-Old Children, Elizabeth S. Baraga

Theses and Dissertations

Attachment and dependency are two important related infant-mother relationships which develop in the first year of life. Attachment has been defined as an affectional bond that one person forms to another specific individual which is both discriminating and enduring. Dependency, on the other hand, has been defined as a class of behaviors learned in the context of the infant's dependency relationship with his mother, reinforced in the course of her care of him and generalized to other caretakers. Operationally, attachment has been defined by proximity- seeking while dependency has been defined by attention-seeking. The purpose of the present study was …

The Effects Of Certain Steroids On The Growth Of Slime Mold, Physarum Polycephalum, Ching-Bun Paul Chen Aug 1975

The Effects Of Certain Steroids On The Growth Of Slime Mold, Physarum Polycephalum, Ching-Bun Paul Chen

Theses and Dissertations

The cortex of vertebrate adrenal glands secretes two major groups of hormones--glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids, which have an oxygen atom at carbon number 11, increase the rate of gluconeogenesis and increase the mobilization of lipids in mammals (Turner and Bagnara 1971). At the same time there is a decrease in protein synthesis. This latter effect may be homologous to a decrease in fibroblast growth in culture in the presence of certain corticosteroids (Ruhmann and Berliner 1965). The main function of mineralocorticoids, on the other hand, is to retain sodium ions. They have little or no gluconeogenic activity. Interestingly, however, these …

Bionomics Of Two Bark Beetles : Genus Chaetophloeus (Coleoptera : Scolytidae), John Wendell Aaron

Theses and Dissertations

Shrubs are important as browse and cover for game animals and songbirds in the desert-shrub and chaparral plant communities in the Great Basin (Plummer, 1968). They also play a major role in soil binding and watershed maintenance (Colby and Weissert, 1975). Therefore, an understanding of the agents which affect the health and survival of the shrubs is important. Insects-have a great impact on the health and reproductive capacity of shrubs. Pollinators, defoliators, borers, etc. must be studied and known for proper management.

The Effect Of Lead And Zinc On Selenium Poisoning In Mice, Cynthia Joy Call Aug 1975

The Effect Of Lead And Zinc On Selenium Poisoning In Mice, Cynthia Joy Call

Theses and Dissertations

Trace elements, because they are effective in catalytic amounts, must be held in delicate balance with each other as well as with the macronutrients of the diet. Disturbances of these balances result in deficiency and toxicity symptoms. Toxic doses of selenium, lead, and zinc, for example, are known to cause anemia (1, 2, 3, 4) and growth depression (5, 3) in experimental animals.
