Kierkegaard's Dialectical Self-Creation: Implications For Counselors., Lorraine Angela Dopson Jan 1980

Kierkegaard's Dialectical Self-Creation: Implications For Counselors., Lorraine Angela Dopson

Theses and Dissertations

The counselor brings to the counseling relationship certain assumptions regarding human nature, its limits, possibilities and processes. Usually these assumptions are not articulated and sometimes they are not known. Counseling, as an endeavor which touches human lives, requires examination of its premises. The purpose of this study is to construct a philosophical basis for the counseling relationship based upon the works of Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), a rich source of such information. The study, which is literary in form, undertakes an indepth examination of those psychological aspects of Kierkegaard's major works which are especially relevant to understanding and facilitating the work of …

Natural And Hormonally Induced Changes Of The Reproductive Organs And Pineal Gland Activity During Hibernation In The Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus Richardsonii., Jon Charles Pigage

Theses and Dissertations

Hibernation in Richardson's ground squirrels, Spermophilus richardsonii richardsonii, was studied for three winters. Animals were maintained at 5(DEGREES) (+OR-) 2(DEGREES)C and continuous light (LL) during the first winter and at 5(DEGREES) (+OR-) 2(DEGREES)C and continuous darkness (DD) during the second and third winters. The typical ground squirrel hibernation pattern was observed throughout the study although the duration of the total and individual hibernation bouts was shorter than that reported in the field.Histological analyses of the gonads during hibernation indicated a greater amount of gonadotropic activity in male ground squirrels than in female ground squirrels. Mature spermatozoa were observed in male …

That is, the Colville words are not alphabetized in Colville (nor …

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank Jan 1980

Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank

Theses and Dissertations

In the struggle for self-government which occupied the Mormon population of Utah between their entry into the Great Basin in 1847 and statehood in 1896, the issue of polygamy dominated public discussion. The non-Mormon population of the United States generally objected to the practice of polygamy, in large part because of Victorian attitudes towards sexual activity and the presumed physical and mental results of violating Victorian sexual norms. It was assumed by most Americans that polygamy, by violating those norms, caused real physical damage to the Latter-day Saints in Utah; damage that disqualified them from holding full and equal political …

Lewis Warren Shurtliff: "A Great Man In Israel", Paul Miller Hokanson Jan 1980

Lewis Warren Shurtliff: "A Great Man In Israel", Paul Miller Hokanson

Theses and Dissertations

From this thesis we gain new insights into nineteenth and early twentieth century Mormonism. The life of Lewis Warren Shurtliff was typical of other Latter-day Saints in the formative period of the Church and Shurtliff contributed in many ways to Mormonism's growth and development. The New England background of the Shurtliff family is informative in determining the influences of Calvinist New England theology on early Mormons.

Shurtliff's vocations of pioneer, colonizer and freighter contributed to the building of a mountain empire in the Great Basin. His courtship, marriages and families and his attitudes and beliefs concerning plural and eternal marriage …

The Chronic Effects Of Estradiol Benzoate On Ventricular Myocardial Blood Flow In The Adult Female Rat, Stephen Maurice Ashe Jan 1980

The Chronic Effects Of Estradiol Benzoate On Ventricular Myocardial Blood Flow In The Adult Female Rat, Stephen Maurice Ashe

Theses and Dissertations

Clinical and experimental data suggest that humans and some animals are protected from acute myocardial infarction by estrogen. There has been much speculation of the exact role which estrogen plays in the circulation. The mechanism of this hormonally related protection is unclear.

In the present study the chronic effects of estradiol benzoate on coronary blood flow in adult female rats were studied. Female control rats, castrates and castrates receiving estrogen for a period of 16 weeks were used. In vivo tracer microsphere studies of myocardial blood flow allowed the quantification of the effects of estrogen on coronary circulation. Results of …

A Sourcebook For The Production Of Musical Dramas And Programs In The Elementary School, Carole Elizabeth Bradley

Theses and Dissertations

The search for educational goals in music productions leads the teacher to a variety of sources for guidance: publications, workshops, and other teachers. None of these sources alone are adequate to the task. The need, then, is to bring together all of this information into one sourcebook. It is this sourcebook that the present study has endeavored to provide.

The purpose of this study has been to develop a sourcebook of practical information for the production of elementary musical dramas and programs and to provide general principles of production as a guide for music teachers. Criteria for creative environments which …

A Study Of Four Arts Enrichment Activities, Mary Etten-Johnson Dec 1979

A Study Of Four Arts Enrichment Activities, Mary Etten-Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation is a descriptive study of formative research in four arts enrichment activities developed for the elementary classroom. The appendix contains the essential parts of this description. The rationale for developing enrichment activities for the elementary classroom is related to the lack of background and confidence many elementary educators have for the arts in education. The traditional practice leads educators to exclude arts enrichment activities from their programs.

The formative research in this study is based on four enrichment units used by teacher raters who were trained through in-service sessions. They taught the enrichment activities to eighty elementary students. …

A Descriptive Analysis Of Language And Cognition In Congenitally Blind Children Ages 3 Through 9, David Wm. Anderson Aug 1979

A Descriptive Analysis Of Language And Cognition In Congenitally Blind Children Ages 3 Through 9, David Wm. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose This study was designed as an investigation of the semantic and cognitive functioning of congenitally blind children within the age range of 3 through 9 years, to help fill the gap in the existing research concerning the early development of the visually handicapped.

Delays in cognitive development among school age congenitally blind children have been attributed to the limitations imposed by blindness on mobility and interaction with objects and events in the environment. It has been assumed that blind children must rely on less efficient sensory perception and discrimination processes resulting in a conceptualization of the world which may …

Learned Helplessness: Affect In Relation To Facilitation And Interference Effects, Thomas R. Foster Aug 1979

Learned Helplessness: Affect In Relation To Facilitation And Interference Effects, Thomas R. Foster

Theses and Dissertations

Learned helplessness is an experimental analogue of depression. In ess;ence learned helplessness theory states that exposure to noncontingent feedback leads to changes in self esteem, performance and affect. Brief exposure to noncontingent feedback is thought to cause increases in anxiety and/or hostility and these motivational changes are thought to facilitate subsequent performance. Extended exposure to noncontingent feedback is thought to cause decreases in self esteem and increases in depression and these motivational changes are thought to be associated with subsequent impaired performance.

One hundred and twelve undergraduate students participated in a six group experiment with groups receiving either contingent or …

A Study Of Friedrich Durrenmatt's Hero In Romulus Der Grosse, Der Besuch Der Alten Dame, And Die Physiker, Helen Weber Hausler Aug 1979

A Study Of Friedrich Durrenmatt's Hero In Romulus Der Grosse, Der Besuch Der Alten Dame, And Die Physiker, Helen Weber Hausler

Theses and Dissertations

The fact that Durrenmatt is a writer of Komodien is well-known. He maintains that in depicting the present, comic elements must be used in order to create distance between the action on the stage and the audience. This does not mean that the tragic is entirely impossible, but rather that a portrayal of the tragic can only be attained through the comedy. And indeed the outcome of a Durrenmatt Komodie better resembles that of the tragedy than that of the comedy. Keeping in mind that there is then a mixture of the comic and the tragic, it is the purpose …

Aspects Of Sedimentology And Fluvial Morphology Of A Part Of The Little Missouri River, North Dakota, Paul C. Jeffcoat-Sacco Aug 1979

Aspects Of Sedimentology And Fluvial Morphology Of A Part Of The Little Missouri River, North Dakota, Paul C. Jeffcoat-Sacco

Theses and Dissertations

The Little Missouri River drains 21,500 km in Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas- The river is perpetually muddy, although the bulk of its deposits are fine to medium silty sand. The discharge ranges between 0 and 3000 m^/s, with a mean value of approximately 17 m'Vs.

Between Medora, North Dakota and Lake Sakakawea 250 km downstream, the river changes from meandering to braided. Braiding may be a transitory response to the decrease in discharge following the spring flood, although more likely braiding is the result of post-glacial changes in drainage, when the river was diverted eastward from its original course. …

Relative Hemispheric Involvement During Arousal And Inhibition Of Affect, Steven L. Shearer Aug 1979

Relative Hemispheric Involvement During Arousal And Inhibition Of Affect, Steven L. Shearer

Theses and Dissertations

The predominant view of hemispheric contributions to emotional ity focuses upon the inherent emotionality of the right hemisphere, in contrast to the logical, rational, nonemotional characteristics of the left hemisphere. However, recent research has also implicated contri butions of the left hemisphere during affective arousal (d'Elia & Perris, 1973, 1974; Ehrlichman & Wiener, Notes 10, 11; Harman & Ray, 1977; Tucker, Antes, Stenslie & Barnhardt, 1978; Tucker, Roth & Shearer, Note 7). Some reports have implicated the left hemisphere in negative affect (Ehrlichman & Wiener, Notes 10, 11; Harman & Ray, 1977), and the right hemisphere in positive affect (Ehrlichman …

Reproductive Isolating Mechanisms And Communication In Greater Prairie Chickens (Tympanuchus Cupido) And Sharp-Tailed Grouse (Pedioecetes Phasianellus), Donald W. Sparling Jr. May 1979

Reproductive Isolating Mechanisms And Communication In Greater Prairie Chickens (Tympanuchus Cupido) And Sharp-Tailed Grouse (Pedioecetes Phasianellus), Donald W. Sparling Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Sympatric populations of greater prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido) and sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianel lus) were studied between 1975 and 1978 in northwestern Minnesota for the pur poses of identifying and determining the strength of reproductive isolating mechanisms between them. Major emphasis was placed on ethological mechanisms but other factors were also examined.

Approximately a fifth of the sharptail’s distribution overlaps half of the prairie chicken’s within North America. Within the zone of sympatry, prairie chicken populations are in small patches and may be liable to hybrid swarming, particularly with changes in land-use practices. The rate cf hybridization is around 1% …

Aquatic Invertebrates And Water Chemistry Of Strip-Mine Ponds In Western North Dakota, Donald Llewllyn Batema

Theses and Dissertations

The chemical and biological properties of ponds artifically created as a result of the strip-mining process, were studied in Mercer County, North Dakota. The water in four of these ponds was analyzed for 25 chemical variables, pH and electrical conductivity. These same variables were also analyzed in bottom sediments and spoils surrounding the four ponds. Invertebrates were collected and identified from these ponds, as well as measuring certain attributes of community structure, including species composition, density, biomass and species diversity. Both the chemical and biological properties documented in strip-mine ponds were compared to a naturally occurring pond nearby (NBUN).

The …

Spring And Summer Ecology Of Female Greater Prairie Chickens In Northwestern Minnesota, W. Daniel Svedarsky

Theses and Dissertations

The spring and summer ecology of female greater prairie chickens in northwestern Minnesota was intensively studied from mid-April through August during 1975, 1976, and 1977. Twenty-one females were radio-tagged and monitored for an average of 57.1 days, yielding 1,113 locations. Female visits to booming grounds peaked around 12 April and copulations peaked around 20 April. Habitats disturbed by culti vation, grazing, haying, and burning accounted for 60.6% of all loca tions of monitored females during egg laying and incubation with crop land used by 10 of 17 females. Egg laying commenced an average of 3.8 days after copulation at a …
