Nonenzymatic Glycation Of Cytoskeletal Proteins In Diabetes Mellitus., Michael Ray Brown Jan 1993

Nonenzymatic Glycation Of Cytoskeletal Proteins In Diabetes Mellitus., Michael Ray Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Prolonged hyperglycemia, as seen in diabetes, results in nonenzymatic glycation of proteins and DNA. Previous investigation by others has shown that many intracellular proteins are glycated, both, in vivo and in vitro. Nonetheless, only a few proteins have been analyzed for the effect of glycation on their function.Glucose and galactose were found to modify a large number of the lysyl residues in selected cytoskeletal proteins. These results led to the study of myosin and S-1 (subfragment-1 of myosin), first with FITC (fluorescein isothiocyanate; isomer #1) and later with comparatively less reactive sugars (sorbitol, glucose, fructose, and ribose).FITC caused a decrease …

Mechanisms Of Complement Resistance By Pathogenic Naegleria Fowleri Amoebae, Denise Marie Toney Jan 1993

Mechanisms Of Complement Resistance By Pathogenic Naegleria Fowleri Amoebae, Denise Marie Toney

Theses and Dissertations

The genus Naegleria is composed of a distinct group of free-living amoeboflagellates that include both pathogenic and nonpathogenic species. N. fowleri, the only pathogenic species of Naegleria to be isolated from humans, is the etiological agent of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare but rapidly fatal disease of the central nervous system in humans and in laboratory animals. The mechanisms of pathogenicity and the determinants of virulence of N. fowleri are unknown. Both pathogenic and nonpathogenic Naegleria activate the alternative complement pathway, however pathogenic N. fowleri are complement-resistant and nonpathogenic N. gruberi are complement-sensitive. The ability to resist complement-mediated lysis …

The Sacred Hoop: The Hero And Community In Selected Works Of Mari Sandoz, Diane Drake Dec 1992

The Sacred Hoop: The Hero And Community In Selected Works Of Mari Sandoz, Diane Drake

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the theme of the hero and community in the works of Mari Sandoz. The hypothesis is that Sandoz believed in the concept of a world community so that her works are centered around the hero as community builder. Using the Lakota concept of the sacred hoop as the controlling metaphor for the study, I have asserted that Sandoz has illustrated in her novels, biographies, and histories that true heroes try to build and maintain the sacred hoop of community, but their efforts are continually thwarted by the weaknesses in themselves and society.

The study is organized around …

A Toposcopic Investigation Of Brain Electrical Activity Induced By Motion Sickness, Dwight A. Roblyer Dec 1992

A Toposcopic Investigation Of Brain Electrical Activity Induced By Motion Sickness, Dwight A. Roblyer

Theses and Dissertations

A toposcope was constructed as a new tool to study signal frequency and phase relationships in electroencephalogram (EEG) records collected while subjects were experiencing motion sickness. This new tool, named TOPOS, is a software-based, multi-featured version of Grey Walter and Harold Shipton's device which they first produced in the late 1940s. The TOPOS graphical display permits the study of instantaneous frequency relationships between the input channels and a reference signal of fixed or varying frequency. TOPOS adds a correlation grid to aid observers in detecting channel-to-reference correlation levels. Users can also vary several display parameters via menus to optimize the …

Object-Oriented Analysis, Design, And Implementation Of The Saber Wargame, David S. Douglass Dec 1992

Object-Oriented Analysis, Design, And Implementation Of The Saber Wargame, David S. Douglass

Theses and Dissertations

Saber is a two-sided, air and land war game that simulates decisions made of commanders at the theater-level. It is being developed by the Air Force Institute of Technology for the Air Force Wargaming center at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. Saber models conventional, chemical, and nuclear warfare between aggregated air and land forces. It also portrays the effects of logistics, satellites, weather, terrain, and intelligence which add to the realism of the Saber war game. The Saber war game has three main components, the preprocessor. which is responsible for scenario development and pregame activities, the simulation. the guts of the war …

An Enhanced User Interface For The Saber Wargame, Donald R. Moore Dec 1992

An Enhanced User Interface For The Saber Wargame, Donald R. Moore

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is part of an on-going effort by the Air Force Institute of Technology to develop a computer-based, theater-level wargame for the Air Force Wargaming Center at Maxwell AFB, AL. The wargame, Saber, is intended to augment the education the students receive at the Air War College and the Air Command and Staff College in the employment of air and ground power. This thesis documents the integrated design and implementation of the two components of the Saber user interface: the pre-processor and the post-processor. Although previous thesis students designed and implemented substantial portions of the user interface, a fully …

Scientific Visualization Of Volumetric Radar Cross Section Data, Thomas G. Wojszynski Dec 1992

Scientific Visualization Of Volumetric Radar Cross Section Data, Thomas G. Wojszynski

Theses and Dissertations

For aircraft design and mission planning, designers, threat analysts, mission planners, and pilots require a Radar Cross Section (RCS) central tendency with its associated distribution about a specified aspect and its relation to a known threat, Historically, RCS data sets have been statically analyzed to evaluate a d profile. However, Scientific Visualization, the application of computer graphics techniques to produce pictures of complex physical phenomena. appears to be a more promising tool to interpret this data. This work describes data reduction techniques and a surface rendering algorithm to construct and display a complex polyhedron from adjacent contours of RCS data. …

X-Aaarf An X Windows Version Of The Afit Algorithm Animation Research Facility, Charles R. Wright Jr. Dec 1992

X-Aaarf An X Windows Version Of The Afit Algorithm Animation Research Facility, Charles R. Wright Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The AFIT Algorithm Animation Research Facility was developed by the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) as a teaching aid for data structures and algorithm design of sequential processes. However, AAARF's unique design makes it particularly suitable for the animation of algorithms running on remote systems. In particular, an extensive set of parallel performance animations has been developed for the Intel iPSC/2 Hypercube for parallel program analysis and performance optimization. The AAARF system was originally developed using the Sun Microsystems' SunView(TM) windowing system. Recent advances in Graphical User Interface (GUI) technology combined with Sun's adoption of the X Window System …

Failure Identification Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation For The Lambda Flight Vehicle, Peter D. Hanlon Dec 1992

Failure Identification Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation For The Lambda Flight Vehicle, Peter D. Hanlon

Theses and Dissertations

This study develops and investigates the performance of a Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (MMAE) to detect and identify control surface and sensor failures on the LAMBDA flight vehicle (a URV developed by Wright Laboratories). The MMAE uses a bank of Kalman filters that predict the aircraft response to a given input, with each filter model based on a different failure hypothesis, and then forms the residual difference between the prediction and sensor measurements for each filter. The MMAE uses these residuals to determine the probabilities of the failures that are modeled by the Kalman filters. Initially the MMAE identified all …

"Butchery And Plunder In God's Name": The Causes Of Oliver Cromwell's 1649-1650 Irish Campaign, Thomas M. Mulhern Dec 1992

"Butchery And Plunder In God's Name": The Causes Of Oliver Cromwell's 1649-1650 Irish Campaign, Thomas M. Mulhern

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes to examine the campaign of Oliver Cromwell against the Irish in the years 1649-1650, and its immediate and long-range causes. This will be done by examining the campaign itself and the history of the English and Irish from their first meeting to the final confrontation between the Irish and Cromwell.

The introduction looks at the events occurring, in England and Ireland, in 1649 and why Cromwell was called upon to mount a campaign against the Irish.

The first chapter explores the Ulster Rising of 1641 and the eight years of war that followed, culminating in the arrival …

Congress And Early Federalist Military Policy: An Examination Of Defense Related Roll Calls In The Second United States Congress, 1792-1793, Elbert S. Barker Iii Dec 1992

Congress And Early Federalist Military Policy: An Examination Of Defense Related Roll Calls In The Second United States Congress, 1792-1793, Elbert S. Barker Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The legislators of the Second United States House of Representatives faced a set of challenging military and political problems when they met in November 1791. The issue of what would be the primary means of the young nation's defense had not yet been determined. The old British and colonial precedents of a militia as the first line of defense were firmly rooted in the minds of most congressmen meeting in Philadelphia. Many of the legislators had been indelibly imprinted with a fear of a large standing army in peacetime from their own personal experiences in the pre-Revolutionary days. Many of …

Methods For Viewing Radar Cross Section Data In Three Dimensions, David J. Tisdale Dec 1992

Methods For Viewing Radar Cross Section Data In Three Dimensions, David J. Tisdale

Theses and Dissertations

Radar Cross Section data is an important factor in the design of modern fighter and bomber aircraft. Minimization of the reflected radar energy is one of the key issues when choosing shapes and materials in new aircraft. Visualization of the energy scattered back to a radar is neither intuitive nor easy. The mission planner and pilot need to gain an understanding of the vulnerabilities inherent in the design of the systems they use. The advent of relatively low cost graphics workstations has made their use affordable in applications inconceivable only a few short years ago. This thesis examines three graphics …

Retinal Modeling: Segmenting Motion From Spatio-Temporal Inputs Using Neural Networks, David E. Swanson Dec 1992

Retinal Modeling: Segmenting Motion From Spatio-Temporal Inputs Using Neural Networks, David E. Swanson

Theses and Dissertations

We applied two first-order, linear, time-varying, differential equations to the task of segmenting motion from sequences of images. The equations are modified Grossberg formulas for long-term and short-term memory models characterizing the neurotransmitter and cell-activity levels of a synapse and neuron. We described how a two layered, sensory, neural network can be built using the equations to simulate the amacrine neurons of the retina. The model is defined using adaptive input nodes (adaptive model) and is compared to a similar model without these nodes (O and G model). By replicating the basic amacrine neuron model to form both one- and …
