Lost in the Times of Yesterday is an ongoing collection of fiction that features short stories who, while varying differently from one another, are all intertwined by the themes of immigration, post-colonialism, and Arabic and Arab-American identity, aiming to capture the diverse orchestra of Egyptian and Egyptian-American voices through the lens of magical realism. Some examples: the grief of a village girl and her attempt to understand her father’s ghost; an Egyptian-American actor whose slow physical disappearance leads to an examination of identity within contemporary performance; and the life of boy born with chestnut wings in a Brooklyn apartment.

Bengal Memory is a documentary short film, told through an expository and personal lens, about a forgotten genocide that occurred in Bangladesh during its Liberation War, the controversial role that the U.S. government played in it, and how the lives of Bengali people in both the homeland and in the American diaspora were shaped by these events. Pesticides are used widely to control weeds and pests in agricultural settings but harm non-target aquatic organisms. We examined the effect of short-term exposure (one week) to pesticide mixtures (low dose: 0.5 μg/L Roundup®, 0.5 μg/L 2,4-D, and 0.4 μg/L atrazine; high dose: 1 μg/L Roundup®, 1 μg/L 2,4-D, and 0.8 μg/L atrazine) on American oyster (Crassostrea virginica, an important shellfish and seafood species) under controlled laboratory conditions. Histological analyses demonstrated the atrophy in oysters' gills, digestive glands, and connective tissue. The future of conservation could hinge entirely on voluntary contributions of individualsand their relationship with landscape features. Conservation funding is becoming increasingly unstable, shifting from large non-governmental organizations to voluntary user-pay funded organizations. At the same time the natural world is experiencing dramatic changes, such as the global extinction crisis and widespread loss of biodiversity. This thesis examines how students’ self-efficacy, confidence, and motivation change when students use content area literacy practices in math. This study was guided by the affective theories of Bandura, Maslow, and Guthrie & Wigfield. This study used qualitative research, focusing on collecting data through anecdotal evidence, student self-evaluation surveys, student journal responses, and a teacher research journal. Throughout the six week study, students participated in lessons focused on improving self-efficacy, confidence and motivation. East Bank Ridge is a natural reef formation located 18 nautical miles off the coast of South Padre Island, covering an area of over 80 km2, with the southern portion extending into Mexico. There is no previous record of the structural composition or fish community present at the site. The ridge was a well-known fishing site in the local community over the past decades but catch rates have decreased substantially according to personal accounts from local anglers. Cerebral malaria (CM), a severe manifestation of Plasmodium infection, prompts our investigation into the nuanced role of pipecolic acid in its pathophysiology. To unravel the molecular intricacies, we conducted in vitro lysine labeling techniques of mice infected with P. berghei ANKA parasites, and human P. falciparum grown in vitro, aiming to discern the impact of Plasmodium on pipecolic acid production. This study delved into the potential therapeutic role of carbon monoxide (CO) and its effects on both endothelialization and non-pathogenic bacteria causing infections. Leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein 1 (LRG1) has become a major topic of research due to an increasing number of studies demonstrating its unique role in the pathogenesis of multiple human diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. LRG1 has recently been identified as an adipokine, a signaling molecule secreted by adipose tissue. Furthermore, it has been correlated with intercellular signaling that promotes diet-induced hepatosteatosis and insulin resistance in mice. The application of environmental DNA (eDNA) has improved the ability of humans to detect the existence and geographical distribution of aquatic organisms. The present study highlights the development and application of eDNA techniques to detect rough-footed mud turtles and yellow mud turtles in different areas in Texas. Both mud turtle species were successfully detected in lakes/resacas using direct eDNA sampling techniques. Moreover, passive eDNA sampling techniques were conducted using different membrane filters to detect mud turtle species. The degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) by nickel sulfide supported on graphene oxide (NiS/GO) and cobalt sulfide supported on graphene oxide (CoS/GO) composite materials was investigated. The catalysts were studied to determine the optimal conditions for BPA degradation using electrocatalysis. Electrocatalytic trials were performed using varying parameters, which included electrolyte concentrations of 1.0 g/L, 2.0 g/L, and 4.0 g/L Na2SO4, pHs of 2, 4, and 6, and constant currents of either 0.100 A or 0.200 A. The Generalized Poisson distribution is useful in modeling epidemiological processes as a branching stochastic processes problem. Our goal is to construct accurate and reliable estimators for the reproduction number (R0) (i.e., the number of secondary infections), particularly in the context of disease outbreaks modeled by a Galton-Watson process. Towards this goal, we construct the classical Bayes estimator, the Maximum Likelihood estimator, and the Empirical Bayes (EB) estimator under the Square Error Loss function in Chapter II. Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a vital role in the global carbon cycle and aids in climate change mitigation. However, deforestation and intensive agricultural practices threaten topsoil and carbon (C) pools through soil disturbances releasing vast amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) by enhancing the decomposition of organic materials. Degraded soils typically lack stable aggregates, nutrient and water retention, and overall low fertility. There has been a growing interest in organometallic chemistry to utilize late Earth-abundant metals towards challenging molecular functionalization of abundant feedstocks to value-added products. There is precedent of utilizing cooperativity to try and address some of the shortcomings of traditional mononuclear complexes by integrating metal-metal and or metal-ligand cooperativity to facilitate multi-electron transformations. The utility of a redox-noninnocent scaffold allows for the metal centers to be stable over a range of oxidation states, using the ligand to store electrons. However, its extensive scan duration not only causes patient discomfort but also increases the likelihood of motion-induced artifacts in the images. To address such a challenge, this study investigates deep neural network models for reconstructing high-resolution MRI images from noisy and significantly undersampled data in a supervised learning manner. Large vessel occlusion during acute ischemic strokes requires mechanical thrombectomy (MT) procedures using stent retrievers (SR). However, complete clot removal typically takes several attempts, which can amplify endothelial cell injury (EI). This project aims to characterize the extent of EI during MT using an in vitro vascular platform and a finite-element model (FEM). Industrial and domestic waste and fertilizer runoffs can enrich nutrients for HABs. In recent decades, wildlife strikes within airport boundaries have decreased partly due to on-airfield wildlife strike mitigation efforts. Landscape attractants surrounding airfields within an 8 km radius have been found to influence the occurrence of wildlife strikes by increasing wildlife presence and abundance on or near airfields.
