This art project is a culmination of research in Medieval and Gothic Christian culture, coupled with contemporary politics and social commentary on gender, identity, sexual freedom, and reproductive rights. Through an examination of the culture wars and development of the Religious Right and rise of anti-abortion propaganda, my thesis explores political iconography as a way to reaffirm personal freedom relating to gender, identity, and reproductive rights. Coastal ecosystems provide key services, such as carbon storage, but compete with development in natural areas. For this reason, increasing their value requires restoring coastal habitats that have been degraded. After the ecosystem has been restored, a goal is that it will start to store more carbon in its soils over time. Tissue clearing technologies such as CUBIC (clear, unobstructed brain imaging cocktails and computational analysis) have the potential to greatly improve the accuracy with which the three-dimensional structure of biological tissues can be depicted. In the present study, a modified CUBIC protocol (mCUBIC) was applied to full-length fixed optic nerves (ON) of mice having undergone repeated mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) or a sham treatment (rsham). Direct fluorescent staining and immunohistochemistry was used to assess inflammatory and degenerative activity in the tissue by confocal microscopy. Urbanization of watersheds causes more runoff to be discharged into surrounding estuaries. Some studies have connected increased discharge to decreased salinity in the estuaries. Salinity is a very important characteristic of these ecosystems, because it can influence biotic distribution. The Sarasota Bay watershed is highly urbanized and stormwater runoff is an established consequence of development. In this study, I looked at the impact of urbanization on salinity in Sarasota Bay, Florida. Neonicotinoids are an insecticide group, introduced in the 1980s, as a more effective method to combat insect pests. Within the past decade, unexpected side-effects of neonicotinoids have been discovered. The most prominent species that has shown negative side effects is the European honey bee, Apis mellifera. By targeting the nervous system, chronic, sub-lethal exposure to neonicotinoids causes behavioral changes and neurological damage, leading to eventual mortality in this species. Microalgae, a group of single celled or simple multicellular organisms responsible for a significant portion of the world’s primary productivity, have the potential to be utilized for sustainable and potentially remediative production of fuel, food, and medicine. Recent experiments have shown that treating microalgae with sound can enhance growth and lipid production. Chlorella vulgaris, a microalga of interest in multiple industries, was cultured with continuous single frequency sound stimulation at 2200 Hz to observe changes in growth rates. Climate change has become one of the most prominent environmental issues in the last couple decades. There are numerous threats associated with climate change, including sea level rise, that must be addressed. Coastal ecosystems, such as wetlands, are at a high risk of loss from sea level rise, which may result in a loss in ecosystem services. The purpose of this study is to model some potential ecological and economic risks associated with wetlands loss in Sarasota County. In this study, I screened a Tawny-edged Skipper (Polites themistocles) population of 26 individuals collected from northeastern South Dakota for Wolbachia. Wolbachia is an endosymbiotic bacteria that negatively affects host reproduction. PCR products for Wolbachia 16S and arthropod 28S were prepared and gel electrophoresis was used to detect Wolbachia infection in the population. This study found that 96% of the Tawnyedged Skipper population presented with Wolbachia. This supports the literature that Wolbachia is prevalent in insect species. I then selected five P. themistocles (Poth) individuals from the population and performed sequence analysis using an established multilocus sequence typing (MLST) protocol …

Modern/colonial states and corporate interests perpetually engage in industrial practices that cause environmental violence ( NYSHN and WEA 2014 ), and th is is a continuation of the logics of modernity/coloniality that developed at the onset of settler colonialism in the Americas (Mignolo 2000; Quijano 1991). Decolonial art plays an integral role in the formation of responses to modernity/coloniality (Maldonado-Torres 2002) and environmental violence, which can be clearly seen within the #NODAPL movement (Martineau and Ritskes 2014). This thesis is an expository work on major results in stability theory, a subfield of mathematical logic. We begin by proving Morley's Categoricity Theorem, which states that a complete countable theory has one model in some uncountable power if and only if it has one model in every uncountable power. This thesis draws upon previous research in ecological sustainability and social sustainability to implement a framework that incorporates both aspects when determining the long-term viability of a green space; specifically food forests. Principles of civic ecology and agroecology were drawn upon to develop this framework. Ecological sustainability was quantified using data collected from inventorying the foundational species of local food forests, which for this research was fruiting trees. The motivation for this research is to investigate the historical development of the nature-culture divide, an anthropological concept that identifies tension between the ideas of nature and culture and seeks to understand where on the scale between autonomy and interaction the two operate. This study analyzes the divide in late medieval and Tudor period England (1250-1600) through the lens of urban infrastructure in order to add to literature concerned with human-environmental interaction and thinking. Mangroves are coastal wetlands that are critical to the global carbon cycle. Mangroves account for about 10-15% of the carbon sequestered by forests while only occupying 0.5% of the total forested area on the planet. Many mangrove ecosystems in the state of Florida suffer from the historic impacts of ditches that were created to reduce viable breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Humans have been shaped by a vast assortment of nonhuman organisms throughout evolutionary history; this thesis explores algae's influence, termed ethnophycology here, in particular. Utilizing extensive archival research, and supplemented with interviews of individuals involved in local food production systems, this thesis aims to looks at the past, present, and future of human-algal relations, with an additional goal of developing a model to incorporate algae into local food systems. The contrast between annual and perennial plants’ life histories results in disparities in their investments towards reproduction and defense following florivore attack. Florivores, insect herbivores that target angiosperms’ reproductive tissues, induce a variety of direct and indirect chemical and physical responses. These include changes in floral traits and in herbivore induced volatiles that alter community interactions, such as pollinator behavior. This study examined the intercorrelation of mindfulness with individual relationship with nature and spirituality. Eighty-nine college students filled out measures assessing their closeness with nature, spiritual practices, and daily levels of mindfulness, as well as measures targeting mindful awareness and acceptance specifically. Data analysis found mindful awareness to be significantly correlated with closer reported relationship with nature, while mindful acceptance was found to be significantly correlated with closer reported relationship with nature. The motivational mechanisms underlying these relationships are discussed.

By 2020 80% of dams in the U.S. will reach the end of their lifespan, increasing the risk of structural failure. Through personal interviews and analysis, this thesis examines the impact of community involvement and anti-oppression collaboration on the food justice movement in Ithaca, New York. It analyses published work on race and power dynamics, and the role communities play in environmental justice. This thesis concludes that while a certain degree of social inequality and disparity exists within the Ithaca food movement, it can be resisted through intentional engagement of disenfranchised communities by locally organized grassroots initiatives and programs, and increased collaboration between these initiatives and programs.

Bay scallops (Argopecten irradians) are an ecologically, economically, and culturally valued species in Florida. Coastal human expansion and development have reduced water quality through nutrient runoff and substantially reduced seagrass coverage, the bay scallop’s primary habitat. These pressures, in combination with commercial and recreational overharvesting, have promoted a statewide decline in bay scallop populations. Their susceptibility to environmental changes and unique life-history characteristics fail to promote natural recovery, even when limitations to harvesting are enacted. Northern Arizona and southern Utah have historically been home to several Native American tribes, including the Navajo Nation. This region has also seen a large focus on energy development, specifically with mining and power plants. Rainbow Bridge and the Navajo Generating Station are two connected cases that demonstrate environmental injustices to the Navajo Nation. Through archival research, field research, and interviews, this thesis explores industrial developments sustained impacts on the Navajo Nation. Additionally, this thesis highlights the efforts of Navajo grassroot groups working to remedy the negative impact of development on their land and reclaiming their sovereignty and self-determination.

This thesis examines current cultural-environmental problems through looking at the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and extrapolating the environmental themes and messages inherent in his work. The theoretical basis of this thesis comes out of the scholarly disciplines of ecocriticism and radical nostalgia. These work as relevant disciplines for this thesis as ecocriticism incorporates an analysis of literature which examines the interaction between humanity, society, and nature. A Geographic Information System (GIS) is used to develop a pilot analysis for the automatable development of distance based brownfield analysis. The pilot was the Phoenix Commercial Park in Alachua County, with a seven mile radius around the brownfield. United States census data were used per census block to provide racial statistics and yearly mean income. Distance based analysis was employed to compare the census blocks based on how much they appeared to be “exposed” to the brownfield and their socioeconomic characteristics. Florida’s Seven50 and Climate Change Compact plans have received both praise and opposition. While counties such as Monroe and Miami-Dade are experiencing first-hand the effects of climate change; counties in northern Florida (St. Lucie, Martin, and Indian River) do not see sea level rise as an immediate threat. Consequently, the opinions of the residents in these counties have influenced either their resignation or participation in both Seven50 and the Climate Change Compact.
