Sharp Arrows Of Censorious Tongues : Alexander Pope's Psalms And The Dunciad Controversy, Hannah Michelle Thomas Jan 2019

Sharp Arrows Of Censorious Tongues : Alexander Pope's Psalms And The Dunciad Controversy, Hannah Michelle Thomas

Theses

Psalm imitation and paraphrase for the purpose of modernizing and meditating upon the word of God was a common practice in eighteenth-century England; however, Alexander Pope’s A Roman Catholick Version of the First Psalm, for the Use of a Young Lady and the more obscure Psalm XCI function differently from the typical psalm paraphrases done by Isaac Watts and Christopher Smart. Rather than participate in devotional meditation, Pope’s two psalms demonstrate a performance of devotion while at the same time revealing a rejection of true religious sentiment. This performance of religiosity and irreligiosity is later leveraged by Pope in the …

A Geometric Approach For Global Stability Of A Predator-Prey Model With An Ivlev-Type Functional Response, Soniykha Dhevi Murukan Jan 2019

A Geometric Approach For Global Stability Of A Predator-Prey Model With An Ivlev-Type Functional Response, Soniykha Dhevi Murukan

Theses

In this paper, using a geometric approach, we study the global stability for a class of predator-prey model with an Ivlev-type functional response. We obtained this by sufficient conditions on the systems parameters, which guarantee that the positive equilibrium point of the presented system is globally asymptotically stable. Our results improve the previously obtained results from Xiaoqin Wang and Huihai Ma [1]. We conjecture that the local and global stability of the positive equilibrium are equivalent. Our conjecture is supported by numerical simulations. The theoretical proof will be our future research effort.

Deep Learning-Based Spatial-Spectral Feature Extraction For Hyperspectral Data Analysis Applications, Bishwas Praveen Jan 2019

Deep Learning-Based Spatial-Spectral Feature Extraction For Hyperspectral Data Analysis Applications, Bishwas Praveen

Theses

Hyperspectral remote sensing presents a unique Big Data research paradigm through its rich data collected in the form of hundreds of spectral bands which embody vital spatial and spectral information about the underlying terrains. Typical hyperspectral data analysis methods are often based on spectral information. Although there have been prior efforts in the literature for incorporation of spatial, spectral, contextual and other forms of information to improve the classification performance of hyperspectral data analysis, this additional information extraction and knowledge discovery process come at the expense of increased computation and memory requirements. Therefore, the caveats of large scale data analysis …

Complexity Assessment Using Systems Modelling Language Models, Victor Emmanuel Pierre Lopez Jan 2019

Complexity Assessment Using Systems Modelling Language Models, Victor Emmanuel Pierre Lopez

Theses

A complexity metric was proposed for the quantification of system complexity using information about the composition of a system and its interactions depicted in a System Modelling Language (SysML) model. The proposed metric was adapted from the complexity metric developed by Sinha and Suh for design structure matrix (DSM) applications, and was modified to allow the proposed metric to be applied at different decomposition levels and to accommodate the inclusion of external interactions. The metric was applied to three case studies: an aircraft engine, a Mars lander, and a spacecraft thermal control system. The proposed metric attributed a higher amount …

On The Neumann Boundary Condition For The Acoustic-Wave Helmholtz Equation, And The Relationship Between Pressure And Density Fluctuations, Sattik Basu Jan 2019

On The Neumann Boundary Condition For The Acoustic-Wave Helmholtz Equation, And The Relationship Between Pressure And Density Fluctuations, Sattik Basu

Theses

Acoustic wave propagation in a duct is governed by the Helmholtz equation, which can be derived from the fluctuating forms of the mass, momentum, and energy balance equations (after considering harmonic dependence on time). In one-dimensional (1-D) domains, the Helmholtz equation is a second-order ordinary differential equation (ODE), while the fluctuating balance equations are all first-order ODEs. As a result, one needs two boundary conditions for the spatial pressure fluctuation $\hat{p}(x)$ in order to solve the Helmholtz equation, while only one boundary condition each is needed for $\hat{\rho}$, $\hat{u}$ and $\hat{p}$ in case of the fluctuating balance equations. Accordingly, this …

Supply Channel Heat Transfer With Simultaneous Impingement Jet Array Cooling And Crossflow Cooling, David Ritchie Jan 2019

Supply Channel Heat Transfer With Simultaneous Impingement Jet Array Cooling And Crossflow Cooling, David Ritchie

Theses

Experimental data are provided for four different sets of experimental conditions for the coolant-side of a double wall cooled effusion test plate. Employed are three different passages for main flow, cross flow, and impingement flow. Coolant is supplied through the cross flow channel and by means of an impingement jet array to the coolant-side of the effusion test plate. This coolant then supplies all effusion hole entrances. The impingement plate and effusion plate both contain six staggered rows of 10 holes per row, where impingement holes are offset so that each is located between effusion hole entrance locations. Installed within …

Effects Of Non-Uniform Temperature Distribution On Degradation Of Lithium-Ion Batteries, Gabriel M. Cavalheiro Jan 2019

Effects Of Non-Uniform Temperature Distribution On Degradation Of Lithium-Ion Batteries, Gabriel M. Cavalheiro

Theses

The effects of non-uniform temperature distribution on degradation of Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are investigated in this study. A Li-ion battery stack consisting of five 3 Ampere hour (Ah) pouch cells connected in parallel was tested for 2215 cycles and compared with a single baseline cell. The behaviors of temperature distribution, degradation, and current distribution of the stack were characterized and discussed. Results supported the hypothesis that non-uniform temperature distribution causes non-uniform and accelerated degradation. All cells in the stack experienced higher temperature rise and degraded faster than the baseline cell. In particular, capacity retention of the middle cell in the …

Experimental Force And Wing Motion Measurements Of A Bioinspired Flapping Wing In A Martian Density Condition, Jesse Lee Mccain Jan 2019

Experimental Force And Wing Motion Measurements Of A Bioinspired Flapping Wing In A Martian Density Condition, Jesse Lee Mccain

Theses

A Mars flight vehicle could provide a third-dimension for ground-based rovers and supplement orbital observation stations, providing a much more detailed aerial view of the landscape as well as unprecedented survey of the atmosphere of Mars. However, flight on Mars is a difficult proposition . Due to very low atmospheric density, approximately 1.3% of sea level density on Earth, aircraft must fly approximately ten times faster, or be one hundred times Iighter in weight than their Earth counterparts, to lift themselves on Mars. While traditional aircraft efficiency suffers in the low Reynolds number environment, flapping wing insect inspired flyers on …

Charging Management Of Plug-In Electric Vehicles Applying Monte Carlo Markov Chain And Quantum-Inspired Optimization Algorithm, Mehdi Rahmani-Andebili Jan 2019

Charging Management Of Plug-In Electric Vehicles Applying Monte Carlo Markov Chain And Quantum-Inspired Optimization Algorithm, Mehdi Rahmani-Andebili

Theses

The transportation sector is responsible for almost one-third of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. To mitigate the above-mentioned issues, plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) are being encouraged by governments and environmentalists to replace internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, since PEVs can be charged by renewable energy sources. Based on the predictions performed by the research organizations, the PEV sales will surpass the ICE car sales in the next two decades. Thus, the PEV drivers will consume a considerable portion of electricity soon. However, the uncontrolled and simultaneous charging of PEVs can put the power system under stress. Therefore, the charging …

High-Order Hybrid Roe-Weno Schemes For Interface Advective Flux Reconstruction, Hayden Arceneaux Jan 2019

High-Order Hybrid Roe-Weno Schemes For Interface Advective Flux Reconstruction, Hayden Arceneaux

Theses

Numerical solution of partial differential equations using the finite volume method (FVM) entails calculating the fluxes of conservative variables at the cell faces. The fluxes are computed through the \reconstruction" of cell-centered variables to the cell face(s). "Reconstruction" is performed using variables and their gradients stored at the cell center located to the left and to the right of an interface, leading to two distinct states of the conservative variables at a face. The resulting discontinuity in interface flux presents a well-known conundrum in the FVM, particularly when solving hyperbolic governing equations. For the non-linear, hyperbolic Euler equations, Godunov recognized that …

Seeding Hydrogen Propellant In Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Engines, Daria Nikitaeva Jan 2019

Seeding Hydrogen Propellant In Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Engines, Daria Nikitaeva

Theses

Using the NASA Design Reference Architecture, Nuclear Thermal Propulsion engine and Mars transfer vehicle models were developed to numerically examine the effects of adding heavy noble gases into the hydrogen propellant stream (seeding) on round trip transit times (baseline of 357 days). Seeded hydrogen, up to maximum seed mass concentration (MSMC) 55.85%, increased engine and vehicle performance by reducing pressure losses, decreasing reactor power, and increasing the overall change in velocity while assuming constant vehicle volume and dry mass. The tradeoff was lowered specific impulse and increased net propellant mass, resulting in increased vehicle wetted mass. Vehicle performance increased at …

Potential Flow Models For The Heliosphere And Their Comparision To 3d Mhd-Neutral Simulation, Shanti Kumari Thagunna Jan 2019

Potential Flow Models For The Heliosphere And Their Comparision To 3d Mhd-Neutral Simulation, Shanti Kumari Thagunna

Theses

Various models have been proposed for the SW-LISM plasma interaction to study the shape of the heliosphere. According to the Parker model (1961), when SW interacts with the interstellar plasma with a very weak magnetic field “comet- like” cavity is formed, called heliosphere. With the help of simplified assumptions, we solve the Parker model for heliosphere in addition with charge-exchange term and compare it with 3D MHD-neutral simulation results for the heliosphere. We develop a chi-square analysis to quantify the relative difference between 2D potential flow and 3D simulation model heliospheric models, and use this to optimize the flow model …

Love And Hip Hop : An Examination Of Hip-Hop Media Effects On African American Romantic Relationships, Latoya D. Binford

Theses

Hip-hop has grown immensely since its invention in the 1970s. No longer just a musical genre, its influences can be seen in all facets of culture, especially within the African American community in which it was created. Because so much of the commercially successful hip-hop media is shrouded in themes such as violence, abuse, and misogyny, it is important to examine its effects on its consumer. This study examined the effects of hip-hop consumption on romantic relationships, as perceived by African American/black women. Through thematic analysis and the theoretical framework of Mere Exposure effect, findings revealed that the participants correlated …

Interactions Between Polymer Nanoparticles And Blood Plasma Applied To Drug Delivery Systems, Mark Bannon Dec 2018

Interactions Between Polymer Nanoparticles And Blood Plasma Applied To Drug Delivery Systems, Mark Bannon

Theses

Targeted nanoparticle drug delivery has the potential to replace current forms of cancer therapy with previously unparalleled efficiency. Upon introduction into the human body, nanoparticles exhibit a substantial increase in diameter due to a biomolecular corona formation caused by interactions between blood plasma proteins and the nanoparticles. These interactions must be analyzed and understood for targeted delivery to reach its potential in both feasibility and efficiency.

To study the formation of the protein corona, polystyrene nanoparticles were incubated in vitro in goat blood plasma for 10-minute intervals, diluted to different degrees and then measured to obtain the hydrodynamic diameter of …

On The Reversible Effects Of Bias-Stress Applied To Amorphous Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide Thin Film Transistors, Anish Suresh Bharadwaj Dec 2018

On The Reversible Effects Of Bias-Stress Applied To Amorphous Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide Thin Film Transistors, Anish Suresh Bharadwaj

Theses

The role of amorphous IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) in Thin Film Transistors (TFT) has found its application in emerging display technologies such as active matrix liquid crystal display (LCD) and active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) due to factors such as high mobility 10-20 cm2/(V.s), low subthreshold swing (~120mV/dec), overall material stability and ease of fabrication. However, prolonged application of gate bias on the TFT results in deterioration of I-V characteristics such as sub-threshold distortion and a distinct shift in threshold voltage. Both positive-bias and negative-bias affects have been investigated. In most cases positive-stress was found to have negligible …

An Adaptive Inventory Management System For Hospital Supply Chain, Pradeep G. Pai Dec 2018

An Adaptive Inventory Management System For Hospital Supply Chain, Pradeep G. Pai

Theses

In healthcare, delivering high quality care to the patients typically requires significant investment in supply chain management systems. Inventory management is an important part of any supply chain system. Researchers have indicated great potential for optimizing existing healthcare inventory systems, especially within hospitals. With ever changing needs, product prices and policies, managing inventory of products in hospitals becomes difficult. As time progresses, the inventory policies of products become sub-optimal. In this research, we study multiple echelons of a hospital supply chain considering the distributors, to address the need for an efficient and effective hospital inventory management system. We propose a …
