Cognitive Reappraisal And Expressive Suppression: An Examination Of Their Associations With Seeking Social Support, Well-Being And Academic Performance, Khalid Abdulazem Mohamed Ahmed
Theses
This thesis examined individual differences regarding two prominent emotion regulation processes - cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression - and their associations with social functioning, psychological well-being, and academic performance. Six hypotheses were proposed. It was hypothesized that frequent use of cognitive reappraisal is positively correlated with seeking social support, psychological well-being, and academic performance, while the chronic use of expressive suppression is negatively associated with the three factors. Additionally, the differences between high reappraisers and low reappraisers, and between high suppressors and low suppressors, were investigated to confirm the results following the correlational analyses. An online survey was conducted …

Inflammation is a crucial defence mechanism that protects the body from the effect of invading pathogens. However, the inflammatory response needs to be controlled in order to avoid systemic manifestations with serious consequences to the host. Accumulating evidence indicates that the inflammatory response is tightly regulated through immunological and neural pathways. Previously, it has been demonstrated that cholinergic stimulation by paraoxon, a specific and irreversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), improved survival in mice following oral infection with virulent Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). However, paraoxon is an organophosphorus compound unsuited for human use. In this study, the …

Improving Template-Based Nanomanufacturing Of Carbon Nanotube Arrays Via Polishing Wet Etching Method, Kosar Samadi
Theses
Multifunctional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) enable novel ways of interacting with complex biological fluid environments, such as single living cells and tissues. It has been shown that vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays can be utilized to deliver genes into cells with high efficiency. These arrays were produced through template-based nanomanufacturing, where chemical vapor deposition forms carbon nanotubes inside the pores and oxygen plasma and reactive ion etching (RIE) expose the tubes by selective etching. The same devices could be produced faster and cheaper by replacing oxygen plasma and RIE with mechanical polishing and wet etching. However, the biomedical utilization of CNT-based …

Bayesian Active Learning For Personalization And Uncertainty Quantification In Cardiac Electrophysiological Model, Jwala Dhamala
Bayesian Active Learning For Personalization And Uncertainty Quantification In Cardiac Electrophysiological Model, Jwala Dhamala
Theses
Cardiacvascular disease is the top death causing disease worldwide. In recent years, high-fidelity personalized models of the heart have shown an increasing capability to supplement clinical cardiology for improved patient-specific diagnosis, prediction, and treatment planning. In addition, they have shown promise to improve scientific understanding of a variety of disease mechanisms.
However, model personalization by estimating the patient-specific tissue properties that are in the form of parameters of a physiological model is challenging. This is because tissue properties, in general, cannot be directly measured and they need to be estimated from measurements that are indirectly related to them through a …

Cross-Modal Data Retrieval And Generation Using Deep Neural Networks, Premkumar Udaiyar
Theses
The exponential growth of deep learning has helped solve problems across different fields of study. Convolutional neural networks have become a go-to tool for extracting features from images. Similarly, variations of recurrent neural networks such as Long-Short Term Memory and Gated Recurrent Unit architectures do a good job extracting useful information from temporal data such as text and time series data. Although, these networks are good at extracting features for a particular modality, learning features across multiple modalities is still a challenging task. In this work, we develop a generative common vector space model in which similar concepts from different …
Optimization And Characterization Of Low-Cost Substrates For Iii-V Photovoltaics, Elisabeth L. Mcclure
Optimization And Characterization Of Low-Cost Substrates For Iii-V Photovoltaics, Elisabeth L. Mcclure
Theses
The highest achieved photovoltaic power conversion efficiency (approximately 47% under concentration) is available from III-V multijunction solar cells made from subcells of descending bandgap that optimize light collection from the solar spectrum. Unfortunately, both III-V multijunction and single-junction solar cells are expensive, limiting their use to niche concentration or space power applications and precluding their competitiveness in the terrestrial flat-plate market. The majority of the III-V solar cell cost is attributed to the thick, monocrystalline substrates that are used as a platform for epitaxial growth, and to the throughput, precursors, and utilization of those precursors associated with traditional growth reactors. …
Characterization Of Friction Based On Specific Film Thickness And Wettability, Avdhesh Bansal
Characterization Of Friction Based On Specific Film Thickness And Wettability, Avdhesh Bansal
Theses
Friction and wear in tribological systems lead to monetary loss and environmental damage. A better understanding of factors that affect tribological behavior of a system will reduce losses and damages in a tribological system. Wetting and surface properties are important in solid-fluid interactions and hence should be considered in lubricant-surface tribological systems. Their effects on tribological behavior are not properly understood. This study analyzed the effect of wettability on tribological systems and checked whether inclusion of wettability in the analysis of friction can lead to a more unified approach.
Wettability informs how a liquid will behave on a solid surface. …

The inspiration for my artworks comes from my life experience and cultural background. There is an idiom in China, “daotingtushuo,” which explains that “most people’s impressions of a certain person/thing are easily affected by irresponsible rumors.” In general, people are more likely to add their personal and emotional perspectives to a certain person/thing when describing it to others. After observation and research, the rumor propagation process needs a medium—the emotions of a human being. To materialize this concept of the emotions, I related color psychology to my work. Based on psychological research, I introduced five different colors to represent human …

Hybrid Frequency Modulated Silicon Photonic Crystal Laser, Andrei Bakoz
Hybrid Frequency Modulated Silicon Photonic Crystal Laser, Andrei Bakoz
Theses
Silicon photonics takes advantage of the mature complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) infrastructure and processes, and is actively pursued for the implementation of complex optical components and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) at low cost and high volumes. Despite a constant refinement of silicon photonics technology to meet the evolving requirements for applications, the poor light emission ability of silicon remains a constraint. As a result, the most essential building block of an optical system, an efficient light emitter, remains absent in PICs based on silicon. This thesis is focused on study of the potential of an external cavity (EC) hybrid III-V …
Smart Inverters For Distributed Pv Network Management, Colin Charles Levis
Smart Inverters For Distributed Pv Network Management, Colin Charles Levis
Theses
Securing a sustainable decarbonised economy involves moving towards a decentralised power system with increasing penetration levels of distributed photovoltaics (PVs) within the low voltage distribution network (LVDN). Increasing penetration levels of PV systems pose challenges for maintaining grid voltage and frequency stability. Thus requires studies and simulations to estimate the needs and technical requirements to overcome the challenges and maximise the opportunities. These simulations require time-domain system models with a high dynamic resolution such as electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations with small-time steps that capture the required performance with large numbers of network elements. However, the small-time step implies a high …
