Police Officer Coping: The Effect Of Police Culture, Management, And Family, Megan Heflin-Brand
Police Officer Coping: The Effect Of Police Culture, Management, And Family, Megan Heflin-Brand
Theses
This thesis examines the idea that police officers have supportive factors in their lives which influence coping mechanisms used to handle occupational stress. This idea comes from police culture literature which suggests that officers are encouraged to use maladaptive coping strategies like drinking and emotional suppression to deal with stress. Additional research on management support and family support are introduced as alternative supportive factors which can promote the use of adaptive coping like agency offered services and programs. This thesis uses data from “Work and Family Services for Law Enforcement Personnel in the United States” (Robert, O’Quin, & Kennedy, 2000). …
Phylogenomic Analysis Of Evolutionary Relationships In Ranitomeya Poison Frogs (Amphibia: Dendrobatidae) Using Ultraconserved Elements, Morgan Renee Muell
Phylogenomic Analysis Of Evolutionary Relationships In Ranitomeya Poison Frogs (Amphibia: Dendrobatidae) Using Ultraconserved Elements, Morgan Renee Muell
Theses
Knowledge of phylogenetic relationships among organisms is essential for anchoring evolutionary studies. Phylogenomic studies use large amounts of genetic data in analyses, which is particularly important for highly phenotypically variable taxa that are difficult to distinguish from one another without the use of genetic data, due to the abundance of homoplasy in morphological characters typically used in morphological classification. Use of genome-scale molecular data has thus become the gold standard for identifying these phylogenetic relationships, specifically in comparison to past studies based on fewer genes. Greater quantities of genetic data, in addition to finer taxon sampling, may lead to different …

The Economic Impacts Of Nuclear Power Plant Closures On Rural Communities, Christina Maher
The Economic Impacts Of Nuclear Power Plant Closures On Rural Communities, Christina Maher
Theses
The 2015 announcement to close Indian Point Energy Center (IPEC) in Buchanan, NY caused a shockwave of concerns for the local community. As a rural community, Buchanan, NY relies on major employers to provide long-lasting careers with steady incomes and steady tax revenue for the community (Mitchell, 2019). A major employer is a business that produces more goods and services than can be utilized by the local economy, and therefore it exports a significant portion of its goods and employs five hundred workers or more (Montrose EDC, 2019). The type of industries that are major employers includes manufacturing, energy plants, …

The Effect Of Phytoplankton Properties On The Ingestion Of Marine Snow By Calanus Pacificus, Grace Cawley
The Effect Of Phytoplankton Properties On The Ingestion Of Marine Snow By Calanus Pacificus, Grace Cawley
Theses
The aggregation of phytoplankton into marine snow provides a mechanism by which smaller particles can coagulate to form larger particles, which can be consumed at various depths or readily transported to the deep ocean and sequestered from the atmosphere on time scales of a thousand years or more. Zooplankton interacting with these large carbon-rich aggregates can obtain nutrition in environments where the phytoplankton size spectrum is small and not directly available, enhancing the possibility of obtaining adequate nutrition in environments dominated by small cells. In addition, interactions between zooplankton and marine snow can result in fragmentation, thus affecting the particle …

0.1>A Model For Thermal Diffusion And Local Tissue Damage From The Measurement Of Temperature In Electrosurgical Incision, Marek Vira
Theses
The extremely high temperatures applied over extremely short time intervals that are characteristic of electrosurgery result in a unique tissue damage pattern. Cesarean delivery and hysterectomy, the two most frequently performed procedures in obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN), commonly employ electrosurgical incision. While it is controversial, it has been suggested that tissue damage produced by electrosurgery could increase surgical site infection rates. While recommendations for the settings in the use of the electrosurgical unit do exist, there is no current technique for real time assessment of the viability of tissue around the site of the electrosurgical incision. Current methods for analyzing …

Electron-beam physical vapor deposition was completed to fabricate thin-film yttrium coated 6061 aluminum substrates. Subsequently, a consistent specimen fabrication method was developed for thin film-elastomer junction with high interfacial bond strength. Utilizing inherent hydroxyl (-OH) groups on the according thin film, surface treatments were completed to form interfacial silanol bonds that acted to imbue thin-film yttrium with reactive sites for urea and hindered urea bonds. A new polymer was prepared based on polyethylene glycol soft segments. Urea-silanol and hindered urea-silanol moieties are the distinguishing characteristic of fabricated control and experimental specimens, respectively. High interfacial bond strength has resulted in an …
Open Set Classification For Deep Learning In Large-Scale And Continual Learning Models, Ryne Roady
Open Set Classification For Deep Learning In Large-Scale And Continual Learning Models, Ryne Roady
Theses
Supervised classification methods often assume the train and test data distributions are the same and that all classes in the test set are present in the training set. However, deployed classifiers require the ability to recognize inputs from outside the training set as unknowns and update representations in near real-time to account for novel concepts unknown during offline training. This problem has been studied under multiple paradigms including out-of-distribution detection and open set recognition; however, for convolutional neural networks, there have been two major approaches: 1) inference methods to separate known inputs from unknown inputs and 2) feature space regularization …

High Conductivity Metal–Carbon Nanotube Hybrid Conductors Via Chemical Vapor Deposition And Electroplating, Anthony P. Leggiero
Theses
Metal-carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid conductors aim to combine the high conductivity of traditional metals with the low mass and temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of carbon nanotubes. The high conductivity of copper makes it a promising candidate to combine with CNTs in a hybrid structure, but there is limited physical and electrical interaction between copper and CNTs. The use of an interfacial layer offers one method of improving the interconnection of a Cu-CNT hybrid conductor. In this dissertation, a joule heating-driven chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique is developed to deposit nanometal seeds throughout a porous, low-density (0.12 g/cm3, ~9 mg/m) …

Measuring The Population Properties Of Merging Compact Binaries With Gravitational Wave Observations, Daniel Wysocki
Measuring The Population Properties Of Merging Compact Binaries With Gravitational Wave Observations, Daniel Wysocki
Theses
Since the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) made the first direct detection of gravitational waves in 2015, the era of gravitational wave astronomy has begun. LIGO and its counterpart Virgo are detecting an ever-growing sample of merging compact binaries: binary black holes, binary neutron stars, and neutron star--black hole binaries. Each individual detection can be compared against simulated signals with known properties, in order to measure the binary's properties. In order to understand the sample of detections as a whole, however, ensemble methods are needed.
The properties measured from these binary systems have large measurement errors, and the sensitivity of …

Query-Driven Global Graph Attention Model For Visual Parsing: Recognizing Handwritten And Typeset Math Formulas, Mahshad Mahdavi
Query-Driven Global Graph Attention Model For Visual Parsing: Recognizing Handwritten And Typeset Math Formulas, Mahshad Mahdavi
Theses
We present a new visual parsing method based on standard Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for handwritten and typeset mathematical formulas. The Query-Driven Global Graph Attention (QD-GGA) parser employs multi-task learning, using a single feature representation for locating, classifying, and relating symbols. QD-GGA parses formulas by first constructing a Line-Of-Sight (LOS) graph over the input primitives (e.g handwritten strokes or connected components in images). Second, class distributions for LOS nodes and edges are obtained using query-specific feature filters (i.e., attention) in a single feed-forward pass. This allows end-to-end structure learning using a joint loss over primitive node and edge class distributions. …

The Relationship Between Parental Recall Of Acceptance Experienced In Childhood, Marital Quality And Current Parent-Infant Interactions, Judee E. Onyskiw
Theses
Warm, sensitive parenting has been related to optimal child development. An important contributor believed to influence parenting style is the parent's own childrearing history in the family of origin. Most past research on the intergenerational transmission of parenting used samples of abusing parents and found support for the generational hypothesis. Other studies have shown the generational process to vary as a function of marital quality. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between childrearing history, marital quality and current parenting style in a nonclinical sample of parents of preterm and term infants. Parent-infant interactions are altered in …
