The advent of digital age dramatically changed the way all aspects of commerce is conducted. From the largest multi-national conglomerates to the least small-and-medium enterprises and to the unassuming business-savvy individuals have adapted to take advantage of the benefits afforded by the resulting digital technology. Investing in, and profiting from, shares of stocks of companies listed in an organized stock exchange is one such instance. Gone are the days wherein stock investors and brokers are inseparable from their telephones to handle trades. Online platforms, powered by machine learning algorithms, have made investing in stocks not only accessible and convenient but …

Utilizing Data Analytics For Optimum Urban Transportation System, Hadeel Raed Shubair
Theses
This study addresses the challenges associated with urban transportation by providing a framework for exploiting data analytics, with application to transportation data, to achieve an effective and time-efficient metropolitan city transportation system. We aim to understand traffic in different areas of the city, as well as trying to categorize the various zones within numerous areas in the city, such as: business destination, residential destination, or touristic destination according to its popularity given both the time-range and the day of the week. In this project, a logistic regression classification model is built to classify locations into hotspots/non-hotspots.

Environmental Effects Of Coronavirus Pandemic: Analysis And Prediction Of Global Air Pollution Levels, Nouf Saif Alhmoudi
Environmental Effects Of Coronavirus Pandemic: Analysis And Prediction Of Global Air Pollution Levels, Nouf Saif Alhmoudi
Theses
The Covid-19 pandemic started last semester when I was starting on my proposal. At that time, the pandemic lockdowns were at their peak levels with strict restrictions against movements. This was the case in most countries across the world. The effect this had on the air pollution was immediately felt. There were negligible amount of flights and road traffic had also significantly reduced. This led to an amazing clearing of the skies of pollution. For the first time in years, the Himalayan mountains could be seen, and many cities saw their smog and blanket of air pollution disappear. At that …

By 2050, the population of urban cities will have increased by millions of people. Statistics by the UN Department's population division of economic and social affairs (United Nations, 2018) indicate that today, at least 55% of the world's population live in urban centers. Further, the UN department forecasts that by 2050, at least 68% of the world's population will be living in urban areas. This means that more than 2.5 billion people will relocate from rural areas to urban areas. According to the International Association of Fire Service Trainers and FDNY and Standard operating procedures, the fire is the most …
Artificial Orbit, Suyu Chen
Artificial Orbit, Suyu Chen
Theses
By composing jewelry works which relate to forms and marks, I explore the relationships between practices and self-awareness, artificial objects in traditional arts and modern mass-production. The similarities between traditional art-making processes, industrial production, and art training which I have received, which all required great amounts of repetitive actions, led my interests towards experimental practices of combining artificial objects. By exploring my cultural background, and the idea of modularity in the art fields, my work focuses on the repeated use of the same component, PVC electrical conduits, to create both wearable and sculptural objects. My thesis contains a collection of …
Deafspace™: Existing Buildings Adapted To Provide A More Optimal And Sustainable Environment, Christopher William Brucker
Deafspace™: Existing Buildings Adapted To Provide A More Optimal And Sustainable Environment, Christopher William Brucker
Theses
Architectural design often creates spaces that are accessible to many, but not all people. In particular, many buildings are designed for hearing people; those who design with accessibility in mind typically consider the needs of blind people and wheelchair users, but often neglect the needs of Deaf people. Thus, most built environments are hearing-centric and unconducive for Deaf people. Furthermore, the relationship between architecture and accessibility for people with disabilities did not become a priority in the United States until 1990 when the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was introduced. The ADA requires architects to think differently and design barrier-free …

With the rapid development of the Internet in recent years, social media is also changing and influencing people's social ways. Become an indispensable part of people's social life. Social contact should belong to the whole people, and daily communication is the demand of everyone. However, some particular groups still need to face many obstacles when using social media. For Pre-lingually deaf people, sign language is their first language, and English is their second language. Sometimes when they read some information in the second language, they can't fully understand it, which leads to obstacles when they use social media. Secondly, in …
Network Slicing For Wireless Networks Operating In A Shared Spectrum Environment, John Jenco
Network Slicing For Wireless Networks Operating In A Shared Spectrum Environment, John Jenco
Theses
Network slicing is a very common practice in modern computer networks. It can serve as an efficient way to distribute network resources to physical groups of users, and allows the network to provide performance guarantees in terms of the Quality of Service. Physical links are divided logically and are assigned on a per-service basis to accomplish this. Traditionally, network slicing has been done mostly in wired networks, and bringing these practices to wireless networks has only been done recently. The main contribution of this thesis is network slicing applied to wireless environments where multiple adjacent networks are forced to share …
Influence Of Liquid Height On Pool Boiling Heat Transfer, Maharshi Y. Shukla
Influence Of Liquid Height On Pool Boiling Heat Transfer, Maharshi Y. Shukla
Theses
As technology advances due to continuous research, devices are becoming more compact, efficient, and powerful. Therefore, heat rejection from such devices becomes ever so critical to maximizing their potential. Compared to other heat extraction methods, boiling provides one of the highest heat transfer coefficients. The heat extraction due to the boiling process is limited to the Critical Heat Flux (CHF). At CHF, an insulating layer of escaping bubbles forms upon the surface to prevent boiling continuity. Subsequently, the surface temperature increases uncontrollably, leading to a system failure. Hence, the elevation of CHF is critical to boiling enhancement. Improvements to the …
Rethinking Resource Allocation: Fairness And Computability, Andrew Searns
Rethinking Resource Allocation: Fairness And Computability, Andrew Searns
Theses
In the field of multiagent systems, one important problem is fairly allocating items among a set of agents. The gold standard fairness property is envy-freeness whereby each agent prefers the bundle allocated to them over any other bundle. For indivisible goods, envy-freeness cannot be guaranteed: consider two agents and one item. In the context of indivisible goods, one key fairness notion which has gained significant attention in recent years is the maximin share guarantee (MMS). MMS extends the cut-and-choose protocol to multiple agents by guaranteeing each agent as much value as if they divided items into bundles but chose last. …

Scalable Real-Time Rendering For Extremely Complex 3d Environments Using Multiple Gpus, Yangzi Dong
Scalable Real-Time Rendering For Extremely Complex 3d Environments Using Multiple Gpus, Yangzi Dong
Theses
In 3D visualization, real-time rendering of high-quality meshes in complex 3D environments is still one of the major challenges in computer graphics. New data acquisition techniques like 3D modeling and scanning have drastically increased the requirement for more complex models and the demand for higher display resolutions in recent years. Most of the existing acceleration techniques using a single GPU for rendering suffer from the limited GPU memory budget, the time-consuming sequential executions, and the finite display resolution. Recently, people have started building commodity workstations with multiple GPUs and multiple displays. As a result, more GPU memory is available across …
Fine-Tuning Sign Language Translation Systems Through Deep Reinforcement Learning, Joseph Panaro
Fine-Tuning Sign Language Translation Systems Through Deep Reinforcement Learning, Joseph Panaro
Theses
Sign language is an important communication tool for a vast majority of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) people. Data collected by the World Health organization states that there are 466 million people currently with hearing loss and that number could rise to 630 million by 2030 and over 930 million by 2050 \cite{DHH1}. Currently there are millions of sign language speakers around the world who utilize this skill on a daily basis. Bridging the gap between those who communicate solely with a spoken language and the DHH community is an ever-growing and omnipresent need. Unfortunately, in the field of natural language …

These changes in species dominance …
Coaching Yourself Through: Exploring The Relationship Between Positive Self-Talk And Resilience, Ian T. Mosier
Coaching Yourself Through: Exploring The Relationship Between Positive Self-Talk And Resilience, Ian T. Mosier
Theses
In this study, I investigated the relationship between positive self-talk, autonomy, and resilience in a sample of adults residing in America (n=177). Forty percent of American adults (n=1031) report daily stressors (Almeida, Wethington, & Kessler, 2002). Even comparatively minor life stressors can have a negative impact on one’s well-being over time (Almeida, 2005). Resilience, the ability to manage and recover from stress, may be an important factor in long-term health and well-being (Almeida, 2005). Positive self-talk has been identified as a possible target for resilience building interventions. However, positive self-talk appears to benefit some people more than others. One possible …
Differentiating Between Invasive And Native Populations Of Bighead And Silver Carp Using Ms-Aflp, Erika Renee Sarvela
Differentiating Between Invasive And Native Populations Of Bighead And Silver Carp Using Ms-Aflp, Erika Renee Sarvela
Theses
When a species is introduced outside their native range, the genetic diversity of the introduced population is generally decreased due to the founder effect, and the fitness of individuals in the introduced population may decrease due to inbreeding depression. Invasive species are a paradox to this paradigm because while the initial population size of an invasive species may be small in their non-native range, the individuals are able to survive, eat, and reproduce so successfully, that they have deleterious effects on native species. One mechanism that invasive species use to overcome a lack of genetic diversity and adapt to their …
Rare Earth Elements And Yttrium In Acid Mine Drainages Of The Illinois Basin, Kyle Klitzing
Rare Earth Elements And Yttrium In Acid Mine Drainages Of The Illinois Basin, Kyle Klitzing
Theses
Coal has been an important natural resource of energy in the Illinois Basin for generations. In addition to the organic macerals in coal, there is inorganic matter containing minerals and trace elements. With growing demand for economic and critical metals including Rare Earth Elements and Yttrium (REY), coals containing anomalously high concentrations of trace elements, as well as their associated coal mine wastes, and drainages have been explored as promising secondary resources, but there were no former studies of REY in Illinois basin CMD. CMD samples were collected from 35 abandoned coal mine sites from three regions of the Illinois …
Electrical Identification Of Innate Immune Cells, Rasha Ayman Nasser
Electrical Identification Of Innate Immune Cells, Rasha Ayman Nasser
Theses
This thesis is concerned with the electrical characterization of the key players of the innate immune cells. Innate immunity is basically the nonspecific immune response that is triggered by any foreign body that attacks the human system. The key players of the innate immune system are mainly dendritic cells and macrophages. Accurately classifying these cell types helps us understand the mechanism of the immune system thereby enabling the development of models to improve new prospects for therapeutics and diagnostics. The characterization described in this thesis is based on extracting the capacitance for each biological cell using I-V curves. The main …
Identification Of Micrornas Related To Type 2 Diabetic Osteopath, Mouza Mohammed Saeed Alfashti Alaleeli
Identification Of Micrornas Related To Type 2 Diabetic Osteopath, Mouza Mohammed Saeed Alfashti Alaleeli
Theses
T2DM is linked to an increase in the fracture rate as compared to the non-diabetic population even with normal or raised Bone Mineral Density (BMD). Previous studies have addressed the question of how T2DM induces osteoporosis; the exact underlying mechanism is still elusive. Bones undergo continuous remodelling throughout life. Bone remodelling implicates the coupling of osteoclastic bone resorption and osteoblastic bone formation. This process is controlled by numerous genetic, hormonal, and neurogenic mechanisms. Osteoporosis is a result of bone loss that occurs by uncoupled remodelling. The existing evidence indicates that short non-coding RNAs known as microRNAs (miRNAs), are the key …

An Examination Of Meat Consumption As A Pro-Environmental Behavior And Its Weak Correlation To Delay Discounting, Sarah Parkinson
An Examination Of Meat Consumption As A Pro-Environmental Behavior And Its Weak Correlation To Delay Discounting, Sarah Parkinson
Theses
This study presented meat consumption as an environmentally relevant behavior (ERB) and examined how the delay to an environmental loss might affect peoples’ decisions to eat meat. Participants completed a delay discounting survey where they selected what percentage of meat they would eliminate from their diet based on varying delays to rising sea levels flooding of their neighborhood. After watching a brief educational video, participants completed the survey a second time to examine whether the video had any influence on discounting rates in the post-survey. Participants also completed the 27-Item Monetary Choice Questionnaire (MCQ; Kirby & Marakovic, 1996) in order …

Theses
Hydrological extremes associated with climate change are becoming an increasing concern all over the world. Frequent flooding, one of the extremes, needs to be analyzed while considering climate change to mitigate flood risk. This study forecasted streamflow and evaluated the risk of flooding in the Neuse River, North Carolina considering future climatic scenarios, and comparing them with an existing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood insurance study (FIS) report. The cumulative distribution function transformation (CDF-t) method was adopted for bias correction to reduce the uncertainty present in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) streamflow data. To calculate 100-year …
The Effect Of Nutritional Programming On Gut Microbiota In Broodstock And Progeny Fish, Samuel Patula
The Effect Of Nutritional Programming On Gut Microbiota In Broodstock And Progeny Fish, Samuel Patula
Theses
Aquaculture is currently the fastest growing animal production sector. Because the aquaculture sector is growing at rapid rates, certain materials for feed, specifically marine protein sources, are becoming increasingly expensive and unsustainable. To counteract the reliance on fishmeal (FM) and other marine protein sources in the industry plant protein (PP), specifically soybean meal (SBM), has been investigated to replace FM as a protein source. Unfortunately, SBM when given in high quantities (greater than 30%) has been shown to negatively affect fish performance including retarded growth, intestinal inflammation, reduction of spawn quality, as well as dysbiosis in the gut microbiome, most …
Constraint Satisfaction Techniques For Combinatorial Problems, David E. Narvaez
Constraint Satisfaction Techniques For Combinatorial Problems, David E. Narvaez
Theses
The last two decades have seen extraordinary advances in tools and techniques for constraint satisfaction. These advances have in turn created great interest in their industrial applications. As a result, tools and techniques are often tailored to meet the needs of industrial applications out of the box. We claim that in the case of abstract combinatorial problems in discrete mathematics, the standard tools and techniques require special considerations in order to be applied effectively. The main objective of this thesis is to help researchers in discrete mathematics weave through the landscape of constraint satisfaction techniques in order to pick the …
Sub-Pixel Sensitivity Variations And Their Effects On Precision Aperture Photometry, Alexis M. Irwin
Sub-Pixel Sensitivity Variations And Their Effects On Precision Aperture Photometry, Alexis M. Irwin
Theses
The response of pixels in CCDs and CMOS arrays is not uniform; physical aspects of pixel structure can create non-uniform electric fields within a pixel and the diffusion of carriers tends to blur pixel boundaries. It has previously been shown that the sub-pixel response can vary by up to 50% across a pixel, with more light being detected near the center and less around the edges. This intra-pixel response function (IPRF) can have significant effects on the aperture photometry of under-sampled PSFs, like those found in the Kepler and TESS exoplanet hunting missions. Knowledge of the IPRF can be used …
Plan 2014: A Case Study On Shared Water Governance, Bobby Moakley
Plan 2014: A Case Study On Shared Water Governance, Bobby Moakley
Theses
Coastal areas of the United States are highly populated due to their richness in natural resources and economic opportunity. With this opportunity comes increasing competition for development. This places intensive strains on natural resources and land along coasts, resulting in damage to ecosystem health. In addition to competitive development, climate change poses a major threat to coastal communities as they are vulnerable to a variety of environmental factors (EPA, 2016). Many coastal communities have formed coordinated approaches to manage water levels and build resilience along shorelines. However, many of these approaches result in a variety of problems and are not …

Theses
Electricity consumption is on the rise as the global population is increasing. The need of energy has been discussed in length over the years. Oil and gas have been the primary resource for generators fuel. As oil and gas are a finite resource, an alternative resource that does not harm the environment is needed to generate energy. The Middle East and North Africa have a huge potential for using solar and wind energy to generate electricity as MENA region has one of the highest levels on solar irradiation. A new system of transferring the power through the MENA region is …
Flow- Digital Gestural Expression, Senjal Pandharpatte
Flow- Digital Gestural Expression, Senjal Pandharpatte
Theses
Overwhelming emotions affect the performance, productivity, and mental well-being of an individual. This has been a rising trend in highly sensitive young adults. To maintain well-being one can work towards developing emotional intelligence. With a higher emotional intelligence (EQ) the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions is better [1]. We lack an engaging way to communicate self-expression that feels in sync with us. The main problem being addressed here is to help people recognize their own emotions, by themselves, and then effectively communicate them to other people. Flow is an interactive creative outlet that allows highly …
Studying The Agn-Merger Connection Through Visual Classifications Of Candels Galaxies, Christina T. Magagnoli
Studying The Agn-Merger Connection Through Visual Classifications Of Candels Galaxies, Christina T. Magagnoli
Theses
Mergers play a vital role in galaxy evolution, having the potential to trigger Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) activity, star formation, or changes in morphology. In this work, we investigate whether galaxy mergers have an effect on AGN activity in the galaxies involved. We used a visual classification scheme to classify the morphologies of nearly 50,000 galaxies and identify galaxy mergers in the CANDELS fields, a Multi-Cycle Treasury Program using the Hubble Space Telescope. We use IR and X-ray selection criteria to identify IR and X-ray AGN, and matched controls to both our AGN subsample and merger subsample. We investigated the …
