Optimization Of A Photographic Shutter By Minimization Of Closing Time Variability, Steven D. Daniels Jan 1984

Optimization Of A Photographic Shutter By Minimization Of Closing Time Variability, Steven D. Daniels

Theses

A photographic shutter was considered, comprised of a mechanically driven, pivoted opening blade and a spring driven, pivoted closing blade which is released by a magnetic holding coil through an armature lever. The magnitude of the viscous drag of air on the closing blade is approximated, and its effect on the travel time (lag time) of the blade is determined to be insignificant. A set of equations is derived representing the dynamic performance of the combination of the closing blade and the armature lever. These equations are used to develop a mathematical representation of the variation in lag time due …

Tensile Analyses Of Creep In Plastics Using The Finite Element Method, Frank A. Porter Jan 1984

Tensile Analyses Of Creep In Plastics Using The Finite Element Method, Frank A. Porter

Theses

The deformation, stress relaxation, stress recovery, creep rupture, creep buckling, and creep ratchetting aspects of creep are discussed with the emphasis on deformation of a plastic due to a tensile load. Two problems were run using the ABAQUS Finite Element Program: an axisymmetric steel pressure vessel with elliptical end caps, and a plastic rectangular beam in tension. The pressure vessel model was used to check the ABAQUS program against the literature. A graphical comparison of the stress results showed that the program showed the proper relationships and magnitudes to confirm agreement The plastic rectangular beam problem showed an error less …

Determination Of The Neighboring Molecule To The Fc Receptor On Human Macrophages, Lorri Jean Malinski Jan 1984

Determination Of The Neighboring Molecule To The Fc Receptor On Human Macrophages, Lorri Jean Malinski

Theses

Chemical cross-linking studies have been carried out to investigate near neighbors to the receptor for immunoglobulin G[lgG] on U937 cells both before and after solubilization of the receptor. A cross-linked product with a molecular weight of 350.000 daltons was achieved with. DMS on intact and lysed U937 cells, DTBP on intact cells and DSS on cell lysates, with anti-FcR as the immunoprecipitation reagent. Following cross-linking of the U937 cells with DTBP and analysis by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis the p350 molecule appeared to be a p 1 70 dimer. The pl70 molecular has been related to some nonspecificity of the anti-FcR. …

Small D.C. Bipolar Electromagnetic Design: Optimization And Analysis, John J. Breen Jan 1984

Small D.C. Bipolar Electromagnetic Design: Optimization And Analysis, John J. Breen

Theses

The design of electromagnets is an iterative process in which the designer arrives at a solution to his design problem through repeated design trials. This procedure can be time consuming, and the resultant configuration may or may not be the best one for the constraints imposed on it. In addition, the designer must have a reasonable knowledge of magnetics to carry out these design steps. This paper presents the basic equations necessary for designing and analyzing a horseshoe-shaped D.C. electromagnet. With this base, two methods are developed to optimize a design for maximum holding force, subject to prespecified constraints. The …

Experimental Quantification Of The Image Quality Loss Due To The Effect Of Screen Ruling, Chantana Tangseree Jan 1984

Experimental Quantification Of The Image Quality Loss Due To The Effect Of Screen Ruling, Chantana Tangseree

Theses

The purpose of this research is to measure the amount of image quality loss due to the effect of screening an image with halftone screens. This was done by using screens of different line number and images with differing amounts of image quality. Six black and white continuous tone positive originals were used to scale the image quality. These prints had been produced so as to have equal steps of image quality from the sharpest and ranging to some lower image quality which was at or slightly below a just acceptable level of image quality. Each of these images was …

The Changes In Ink Tack And Paper Picking As Effected By Ink Viscosity, Chih-Chao Yeh Jan 1984

The Changes In Ink Tack And Paper Picking As Effected By Ink Viscosity, Chih-Chao Yeh

Theses

The Inkometer is the most commonly used for measuring ink tack. Several problems Involved in use of the Inkometer to measure tack are discussed. An attractive method of measuring ink tack is needed. This study concerns the relationship of ink tack to viscosity. Ink tack is of importance at the moment of printing. Since it correlates with the picking of paper, the relationship between viscosity and paper picking as correlected with the different press speeds were investigated. An I G T Printability Tester (Model-Al) with a printing spring attachment was used to apply ink to paper. An Inkometer and a …

Digital Processing Of Compressed Image Data, Andrew Masia Jan 1984

Digital Processing Of Compressed Image Data, Andrew Masia

Theses

Certain image processing functions can be implemented more efficiently when the input data is in compressed form. Such an experimental system has been studied and simulated. The system consists of a one-dimensional Differential Pulse Code Modulation (DPCM) compressor, a one-dimensional non-recursive linear filter, and a one-dimensional DPCM decompressor, applied in that order. The implementation is more efficient because the filter is applied to the data in their compressed form, where fewer bits per pixel are required to represent them. A second, more conventional, system that contains the same functional elements but reverses the order of the filtration and decompression operations …

The Synthesis And Characteristics Of Nonsteroidal Antiestrogens; Hydroxytamoxifen And N,N-Dimethyl Analog Of Nafoxidine, Brian O'Shaughnessy Jan 1984

The Synthesis And Characteristics Of Nonsteroidal Antiestrogens; Hydroxytamoxifen And N,N-Dimethyl Analog Of Nafoxidine, Brian O'Shaughnessy

Theses

Introductory Remarks and Statement of Purpose: Estrogens and estrogen mimetic compounds have long been known to be potent growth promoters. It is also well established that within the cells of estrogen target organs there are proteins which act as specific receptors and as such bind estrogen against a concentration gradient (1). Additionally, these proteins are capable of carrying the estrogenic molecule across the nuclear membrane in an as yet not fully understood, thermally activated mechanism. Once inside the nucleus, the estrogenic molecule (that is estrogenic in binding ability) will then either enhance or diminish transcription, translocation, and subsequently protein growth. …

Reliable File Transfer Across A 10 Megabit Ethernet, Mark Van Dellon Jan 1984

Reliable File Transfer Across A 10 Megabit Ethernet, Mark Van Dellon

Theses

The Ethernet communications network is a broadcast, multi-access system for local computing networks. Such a network was used to connect six 68000 based Charles River Data Systems for the purpose of file transfer. Each system required hardware installation and connection to the Ethernet cable. The software is an implementation which conforms to Xerox "PUP File Transfer Protocol Specifications". This required the writing of two programs, the FTP user and the FTP server. Each program was built upon common communication packages which also had to be written. These communication routines transferred data over the Ethernet using the PARC Universal Packets (PUP) …

Determination Of The Existence Or Non-Existence Of Low-Intensity Reciprocity Law Failure In Kodak Micro Positive Resist 809, Jutta C. Middel Jan 1984

Determination Of The Existence Or Non-Existence Of Low-Intensity Reciprocity Law Failure In Kodak Micro Positive Resist 809, Jutta C. Middel

Theses

This thesis was performed to determine if low intensity reciprocity law -failure (RLF) exists in Kodak Micro Positive Resist B09 (KMPR 809) . At exposure irradiances at or below .44 mw/sq cm, it was observed that solublization of the photopolymer was incomplete, indicating that low-intensity RLF of the photosolubilization does exist. RLF was indicated by the formation of a "scum" layer over the exposed areas of the resist, the thickness of which increased with decreased irradiance. Mechanisms have been identified which may explain the RLF of the photoreaction. Confirmation of the proposed mechanisms could be the subject of another study. …

Cabinet-Making And The Contemporary Imagination, Daniel Bailey Dec 1983

Cabinet-Making And The Contemporary Imagination, Daniel Bailey

Theses

Before becoming a serious woodworker, I was preoccupied with other art forms, primarily contemporary poetry and fiction. Film, sculpture, painting, music, and performance also seemed to be powerful genres in which the imagination could manifest itself most directly, and influence human lives with a magical force. As an undergraduate in the early 1970's, I received a degree in literature. At that time the poetry readings I attended in New York City were as important as the books and ideas to which I was exposed in a progressive classroom situation. What I gained from this experience was a particular sense of …

The curriculum organization models the NCLEX by utilizing the nursing process format and through the integration of medical, surgical and behavioral concepts throughout the life cycle. The conceptual framework utilized man as …

Synthetic Studies In Substituted Phenols, Involving Electrophilic Side-Chain And Ring Substitutions, Bussakorn Warote Dec 1983

Synthetic Studies In Substituted Phenols, Involving Electrophilic Side-Chain And Ring Substitutions, Bussakorn Warote

Theses

This work deals with two separate aspects of the chemistry of phenolic compounds. In the first section a study is reported of aryl alkyl ether synthesis using as a standard nucleophile catechol anion and as electrophilic species a range of alkyl halides. The reactions involved constituted good routes to a number of catechol mono- and di-alkyl catechol ethers. The reaction were studied systematically and key reactivity factors such as steric effects and the influence of changing alkyl chain lengths were evaluated. The high-boiling colorless products were characterize by elemental analysis, H NMR and IR spectra. As a guide to understanding …

Linearity Of An Electrophotographic Image Reproduction System, Lloyd Clark Dec 1983

Linearity Of An Electrophotographic Image Reproduction System, Lloyd Clark

Theses

The linearity of image transfer is analyzed for a high resolution electrophotographic film and electrodeveloper combination. The extent of nonlinearities introduced upon transfer through the photoconduction and electrodevelopment stages is conceptualized in terms of inherent physical mechanisms. A spectral shift in narrow band exposing radiation is used to test significance of exponential absorption on linearity of photoconduction transfer. Variations in development electrode spacing and development time test for nonlinearity induced by temporal and spatial frequency dependent depletion of electrodeveloper particles. As the electrophotographic film employed in the test exhibited low absorption coefficients in all spectral bands, exponential absorption of exposing …

A Comparison Study Of Atmospheric Radiometric Calibration Methods For Aerial Thermograms, A. E. Byrnes Dec 1983

A Comparison Study Of Atmospheric Radiometric Calibration Methods For Aerial Thermograms, A. E. Byrnes

Theses

A comparison study was conducted to evaluate limitations of several atmospheric calibration techniques, including: Angular, Profile, and spectrally corrected and uncorrected LOWTRAN. To accomplish this, a thermal mapper was flown over a shoreline where water surface temperatures were measured coincidentally by a ground crew. The thermogram derived observed radiances were corrected using each of the atmospheric calibration methods so that ground surface temperatures could be predicted. The R.M.S. errors of these ground temperature predictions indicated that all calibration techniques yielded similar results at 1000-foot altitude. The error remained constant for the Profile and LOWTRAN calibration techniques to 6000-foot altitude, but …

Comparison Of Methods Of Mtf/Otf Analysis For Optical Systems, Jean Croteau Nov 1983

Comparison Of Methods Of Mtf/Otf Analysis For Optical Systems, Jean Croteau

Theses

A comparison study for the methods of obtaining the MTF of optical systems was performed. It is demonstrated that non-Fourier methods are as good predictors of the MTF as are the Fourier methods. A new technique based on the moment theorem is introduced and is found to be a good predictor. A computer algorithm has been written to perform all the necessary operations.

Behavior Of Joints Using Reinforced Polymer Concrete Under Seismic Loading, Ishac H. Kafrouni Oct 1983

Behavior Of Joints Using Reinforced Polymer Concrete Under Seismic Loading, Ishac H. Kafrouni

Theses

This report describes the analysis and testing of two types of exterior beam-column joints conducted at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The testing program consisted of six beam column joints with varying strength cementing agents in the joint region: normal, high strength and polymer concrete. Half of the specimens contained 1.5 percent by volume of hooked end fibers. The study of the behavior of these beam column joints has indicated 2 cases of failures: a critical region in which the inelastic behavior was controlled by bending and, a critical region in which the inelastic behavior was controlled by high shear. …

Design Of A Photoreactor For The Oxidation Of Toxic Pollutants In Water By Ozone And Ultraviolet Radiation, Shahab Rashid Khan Oct 1983

Design Of A Photoreactor For The Oxidation Of Toxic Pollutants In Water By Ozone And Ultraviolet Radiation, Shahab Rashid Khan

Theses

A photoreactor has been designed to oxidize refractory chemicals found in water using ozone and ultraviolet radiation. The feasibility of the ozone/UV process has been examined by conducting experiments with three model compounds, namely, (1) o-chlorophenol (2) m-chlorophenol and (3) p-chloro phenol. For o-chlorophenol and p-chloro-phenol, reactions were very fast with ozone/UV oxidation and somewhat slower with m-chlorophenol. It is concluded that UV irradiation increases the decomposition of ozone and the resulting unstable intermediates are much more reactive than ozone. Ultraviolet light also helps in decomposing the substrate molecules. The effect of UV upon decomposition of ozone is more pronounced …

High Speed Puncture Impact Studies Of Structural Foam Plaques, Shashi B. Kumar Oct 1983

High Speed Puncture Impact Studies Of Structural Foam Plaques, Shashi B. Kumar

Theses

The constant velocity high speed impact study was conducted on different thermoplastic and thermoset structural foam plaques to study their impact behavior. Plaques of Noryl, Polycarbonate, Polystyrene and Polyurethane were carefully chosen to represent a true sample of the manufactured product. Test plaques were marked such that specimens could be tested for variation in location, thickness of the plaque and variation between plaques. High speed puncture impact experiment was conducted on each specimen and the results were analysed.

The test results showed that the impact performance varied significantly over the plaque. Noryl and Polycarbonate did not exhibit any correlation for …
