It is usually difficult to compress data from a statistically unknown source and yield a good compression ratio. Using the fact that words are the fundamental basis of the written language, a data compression scheme based on words should yield high compression ratios. Discussed here is a compression scheme that gathers words from the source stream and places them in a dictionary, or word list, to use later in the coding, thereby becoming adaptive to the words in a given file without prior knowledge of the source. This project was an exercise in assessment of student writing in the Francis Howell School District. This district began a writing program in the fall of 1986, emphasizing 45 minutes of daily writing instruction and practice each school day . After approximately 44 weeks of exposure to the program, the assessment was conducted in the winter of 1988.

A published narrative essay test, the CAT Writing Assessment System, was given to 280 randomly selected students in grades three through six. Of these, 80 were used in the training of a rater team which then inter-scored the remaining 200 essays. They …

The sandwich consists of an elastic central layer coated on both sides with a viscoelastic material and two outer layers made out of the same material as the central layer. The purpose of this thesis is to create an animation for entertainment utilizing the computer as opposed to traditional animation. I intend to use the computer as a tool to tell a visual story rather than performing visual tricks and techniques so often found in computer animation. The animation will tell a story in which the characters will have visual appeal in order to involve the viewer. It is also possible that I may integrate some video techniques. 129I/127I ratios were investigated as a potential for dating and tracing studies of crude oil systems. 129I/127I ratios were measured using a tandem accelerator mass spectrometer located at the University of Rochester. Carrier-free methods for AgI preparation are discussed for formation waters, petroleum, and source and reservoir rocks. Formation water extractions include the use of oxidizing and reducing agents to extract iodine into carbon tetrachloride. Samples prepared in this way gave good ratio measurements with no contamination. Two methods for iodine extraction from petroleum are employed. The first is a sodium biphenyl extraction which will extract up to 90% of …

The need to aerodynamically remove isolated charged particles 50 to 500 micrometers in size from a bed comprised of numerous smaller 10-15 micrometers size charged particles is identified. To facilitate accurate prediction for successful particle removal, a new analytical method is presented for determining the magnitude and location of the aerodynamic drag force acting on a spherical particle in a boundary layer flow. Wind tunnel experiments are conducted on spheres of 2 to 2.5 cm diameter in turbulent boundary layer flow for sphere Reynolds numbers on the order of 10,000.
