3-D Longwave Infrared Synthetic Scene Simulation, Eric H. Shor
3-D Longwave Infrared Synthetic Scene Simulation, Eric H. Shor
Theses
A technique for thermal infrared (8-14 micrometers) synthetic image generation (SIG) was demonstrated that yields improved radiometric accuracy. This process utilizes the LOWTRAN 6 atmospheric propagation model and computer graphics ray-tracing techniques. A scene is created by placing faceted objects into world coordinates with rotation, translation, and scaling parameters. Each facet is assigned a material index and temperature. This index points to angular emissivity data for that material. LOWTRAN 6 can incorporate a sensor response function when calculating data files for the atmospheric transmission, upwelled and downwelled radiances, and temperature-to-radiance conversions. Ray-traced imagery is generated and discussed. The image is …
Optimal Selection Of Textural And Spectral Features For Scene Segmentation, Wendy Rosenblum
Optimal Selection Of Textural And Spectral Features For Scene Segmentation, Wendy Rosenblum
Theses
A study is described in which optimal textural and spectral features are selected for scene segmentation. A set of 46 textural features and 3 spectral features were available for image classification. A method was developed which used a thresholded separability measure to select the best features for scene segmentation. The measure was based on the Mahalanobis distance between class means. The optimal feature selection process was applied to a variety of images and classification results using 4 features ranged from 91% to 97% with independent data sets. The use of the thresholded Mahalanobis-like distance for optimal feature selection was compared …

The Tug Function: A Method Of Context Sensitive Dot Structuring For Digital Halftones, Steven Hoffenberg
The Tug Function: A Method Of Context Sensitive Dot Structuring For Digital Halftones, Steven Hoffenberg
Theses
The process of digitizing images to create halftones inherently reduces sharpness through the averaging of grayness values within cell areas. Within the context of a resolution independent page description language, overcoming this reduced sharpness is conventionally addressed by adjusting the grayness values of cells to create larger or smaller halftone dots where edges are present. Such an approach does not take full advantage of the capabilities of the output device. The objective of this project was to design and implement a method of sharpening digital images by altering the shape and position, rather than the size, of halftone dots. Such …
Modeling Variation In The Refractive Index Of Optical Glasses, David Stephenson
Modeling Variation In The Refractive Index Of Optical Glasses, David Stephenson
Theses
Experimental measurements that describe the dispersive behavior of production samples of optical glasses are fit with models of minimum complexity for the purpose of in terpolation and extrapolation. Software to perform this procedure on a regular basis is presented, and shown to dis tinguish between models of inappropriate complexity. Two degrees of freedom usually provide a statistically optimum fit to the data contrary to the widespread practice of fit ting a general, six term model to such measurements. Using specially developed analysis tools, it is concluded that annealing does not significantly change the partial dispersion of the sample. Partial dispersion …

Painting Perceptions, Jacqueline Domin
Painting Perceptions, Jacqueline Domin
Theses
The computer is a multidisciplinary tool engaging all the senses. Creating with color, light, and motion is a rich visual experience enhanced by the vibrations of sound. These vibrations, both light and sound, are absorbed by the viewer and influence his experience. This makes the computer a profoundly different medium than the static arts. Artist have powerful tools with which to create experiences - paint perceptions. As a painter, creating rich visual relationships has been a focus for many years. Exploring the computer as an image making tool is different than using it for graphic design. It has taken years …
Automatic Mesh Generation, Ajay Garg
Automatic Mesh Generation, Ajay Garg
Theses
The objective of this thesis project is a study of Pre-Processors and development of an Automatic Mesh Generator for Finite Element Analysis. The Mesh Generator developed in this thesis project can create triangular finite elements from the geometric database of Macintosh Applications. The user is required to give the density parameter to the program for mesh generation. The research is limited to Mesh Generators of planar surfaces. Delauny Triangulation method maximizes the minimum angles of a triangle. Watson's Delauny Triangulation method can mesh only the 'convex hull' of a set of nodes. This algorithm has been modified to create triangular …

On Axial Vibration Of A Web-Idle Roller System, Richard Bomba
On Axial Vibration Of A Web-Idle Roller System, Richard Bomba
Theses
A typical continuous web-processing machine consists of hundreds of idle rollers and web spans. A web span is formed by tensioning a thin film (the web) over at least two idle rollers. Machine drive controls, bearing friction, and air impingement on the web surface represent some of the factors that can influence web tension and web speed. A significant effort is devoted to maintaining uniform web tension and web speed in these machines. The uniformity of these parameters is a requirement to consistently manufacture web products within rigorous quality specifications. In support of this effort to control web tension and …

Color Ink-Jet Printing: Evaluation Of Print Quality On Different Paper Substrates, Srikumaran Asokan
Color Ink-Jet Printing: Evaluation Of Print Quality On Different Paper Substrates, Srikumaran Asokan
Theses
Ink-jet printing has gained a dominant position among the technology choices for "on demand" generation of color hard copies from the computer. Reduction of ink-related problems, low cost, improved resolution, and less-demanding substrate requirements have become important advantages. This study's primary objective is to evaluate, both subjectively and objectively, the effect of various paper properties on the quality of print obtained from a color ink-jet printer. The initial stage of this investigation involved a subjective evaluation of the different prints by a panel of observers. A dual scaling analysis of the subjective responses indicates that for the paper substrates selected, …
To Determine The Drying Rate And The Rewettability Characteristics Of Water Based Flexographic News Inks, Parthasarathy Varadarajan
To Determine The Drying Rate And The Rewettability Characteristics Of Water Based Flexographic News Inks, Parthasarathy Varadarajan
Theses
A major problem in the printing of newsprint by flexography with water-based inks is the filling-in of halftones. Drying of the ink and rewettability, the ability of the fresh ink to wet the dried ink, appear to be primary in the understanding of the filling-in problems. Quantification and qualification of critical factors are essential in resolving this problem. In this study black water based flexographic news inks from different manufacturers were compared in terms of their drying and rewettability characteristics. The change in weight with time and contact angle measurements are the response parameters considered. Proper care has been exercised …
Analysis Of Color Variation During Four-Color Offset Lithographic Press Runs By Monitoring Changes In Three-Filter Density Values Of Overprint Tints, Curtis L. Smith
Analysis Of Color Variation During Four-Color Offset Lithographic Press Runs By Monitoring Changes In Three-Filter Density Values Of Overprint Tints, Curtis L. Smith
Theses
A densitometric method of monitoring color variation during four-color offset lithographic press runs is proposed. Once an 'OK' press sheet has been approved for the run, a standard color reference is established with which successive sheet pulls can be compared. In order to develop an accurate and repeatable system for monitoring and controlling color variation, densitometric analysis of three color overprinted tints can be utilized. In relation to the OK sheet, changes in the three-filter density readings measured at specific points across successive press sheets, indicate the visual change in color hue and strength that occurs during the press run. …

An Optimization Model For Selecting The Economical Cutting Parameters In An External Forward Turning Operation, Rose Bothner
An Optimization Model For Selecting The Economical Cutting Parameters In An External Forward Turning Operation, Rose Bothner
Theses
This study develops software that provides optimum lathe cutting conditions for specific materials and parameters. This is accomplished by developing a model, based on empirical and analytical relationships, which estimates the optimum cutting conditions, (i.e. spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut) for a single pass, external turning operation. These parameters are optimized to yield the minimum production cost, while satisfying constraints imposed by workpiece specifications and equipment limitations. The equipment limitations considered include the available machine power, maximum workholding force of the lathe, range of spindle speeds, feed rates for the lathe and tool, and the range of …

Study Of Marketing Techniques Involving Color And Texture Associations As Used In Book Publishing, Roxanne Mcclanahan
Theses
Books can send messages to reach the subconscious levels of the reader's mind. These subconscious messages are learned associations from past experiences that use color and texture as means of expression. This perception is not with the eyes, but more with the observer's mind. Therefore, when the book buyer is browsing in a bookstore and the suggestion that one experiences from looking at the book does not match one's subconscious message, the book is quickly put down. The principal object of this study is the effect of color and texture used in cover design of books on the subconscious mind …
