Measurement Of Thermal Conductivities Of Polymer Films With The Tc-1000 Thermal Comparator, Dong Ming Li
Measurement Of Thermal Conductivities Of Polymer Films With The Tc-1000 Thermal Comparator, Dong Ming Li
Theses
The single-probe, direct reading thermal comparator has been used extensively to measure the thermal conductivity of bulk solids, liquids, and gases. With the use of an analytical heat flow model based on the work of Dryden1 and the work of Carslaw and Jeager2, the comparator can also be used to obtain an in-situ measurement of the thermal conductivity of a film while attached to a substrate. The purpose of this paper is to test this model by measuring the thermal conductivities of commercially available polymer films (DuPont Kapton and Teflon). The values obtained with the comparator were found to be …

Transputer-Based Robot Controller, Wei-Chieh Chang
Transputer-Based Robot Controller, Wei-Chieh Chang
Theses
A cost-effective architecture for the control of robot manipulators based on functional decomposition of the equations of motion is described. The Lagrange-Euler( LE) and the Newton-Euler( NE) formulations are used for decomposition. According to real-time control criterion, the LE equations are not suitable for implementation using currently available hardware because the required number of computations is too high, even after taking the inherent parallelism into account. However, the recursive nature of the Newton-Euler equations of motion lend themselves to being decomposed to terms used to generate the recursive forward and backward formulations. A special architecture implemented on a network of …
Prediction Of Screener-Induced Moire In Digital Halftone Pattern Generation, Richard Comeau
Prediction Of Screener-Induced Moire In Digital Halftone Pattern Generation, Richard Comeau
Theses
In the graphic arts, objectionable moire patterns are often observed on films or printed products due to the interaction of various periodic structures of halftone images. A particular type of moire pattern that results from digital halftoning at arbitrary angles and frequencies using a virtual screen function has been studied. A computer program was developed that produces uniform digital halftone patterns using a virtual screen approach and that calculates the corresponding amplitude spectra. It was found that aliasing due to the sampling of the virtual screen causes low frequency components in the amplitude spectrum. Moire patterns with fundamental vector frequencies …

Chemical Sensitization Of Tabular-Grain Emulsions In The Presence Of Sensitizing Dye, Weide Victor Yang
Chemical Sensitization Of Tabular-Grain Emulsions In The Presence Of Sensitizing Dye, Weide Victor Yang
Theses
This thesis considers the role a spectral sensitizing dye plays in chemical sensitization for tabular-grain emulsions. Different approaches for introducing sensitizing dye have been chosen in conjunction with sulfur-thiocyanate-gold (S-SCNAu) chemical sensitization, 1. At the completion of nucleation (NUC) 2. At various precipitation completion points (pcp) a. At 35% pcp b. At 70% pcp c. At 80% pcp d. At 90% pcp e. At 100% pcp (i.e., at the beginning of Ostwald ripening) 3. Before chemical sensitization with varied digest addition sequences: Dye-SSCN- Au, Dye-SCN-S-Au 4. Conventionally: S-SCN-Au-Dye, i.e., dye introduced after chemical sensitization (control). It also considers what happens …
Investigation Of An In-Situ Method For Determining The Modulation Transfer Function And Its Applications In A Microlithographic Wafer Stepper, Steven D. Carlson
Investigation Of An In-Situ Method For Determining The Modulation Transfer Function And Its Applications In A Microlithographic Wafer Stepper, Steven D. Carlson
Theses
Research into characterization of wafer stepper systems has been done primarily by analyzing a series of wafer exposures. This method does not allow for easy separation of the effects of the exposure system and the resist processing system. In addition, determination of the transfer characteristics of projection lithographic lenses is typically done before the lens system is installed into the wafer stepper system. A method is presented which allows for the in-situ determination of the modulation transfer function. This method separates the processing effects from those of the exposure system. Scattered light from a polys il icon edge is shown …
Improved Techniques For Bispectral Reconstruction Of Signals, Gopalakrishnan Sundaramoorthy
Improved Techniques For Bispectral Reconstruction Of Signals, Gopalakrishnan Sundaramoorthy
Theses
Higher order cumulants and spectra have found a variety of uses in many areas of digital signal processing. The third order spectrum, or bispectrum, is of specific interest to researchers because of some of its properties. The Bispectrum is defined as the fourier transform of the third order cumulant se quence for stochastic processes, and as a triple product of fourier transforms for deterministic signals. In the past, bispectral analysis has been used in applications such as identification of linear filters, quadratic phase coupling problems and detection of deviations from normality. This work is aimed at developing techniques for reconstructing …
Model Reduction And Simulation Of Complex Dynamic Systems, Amit Gupta
Model Reduction And Simulation Of Complex Dynamic Systems, Amit Gupta
Theses
A novel method for reducing the order of discrete time systems is developed. This model reduction technique based on Continued Fraction approach allows design parameters to be preserved. A reduced order model obtained using this technique is compared with those by other techniques to show its superiority. Furthermore, form a practical point of view, it is shown that this method can be used to design lower order digital controllers for higher order plants. Development of various model reduction techniques for continuous and discrete time systems are discussed in details and computer programs are implemented. A modified algorithm that reduces the …

More Than A Record: An Analysis Of The Stylistic Development In W. H. Jackson's Photography, Sarah Beckner
More Than A Record: An Analysis Of The Stylistic Development In W. H. Jackson's Photography, Sarah Beckner
Theses
The enthusiasm that the editors of the Philadelphia Photographer showed for William Henry Jackson's 1872 Yellowstone views reflects the complex level of perception and understanding to which photography had arrived by late midcentury. Although Jackson had been commissioned as official photographer to the Geological Survey of the Territories to gather visual documentation for the survey to be an objective documentarian his photographs simultaneously depicted the artistic beauty of the region and, through their realistic illustration, transported the viewer to the far-away place.

Merging Panchromatic Multispectral Images For Enhanced Image Analysis, Curtis K. Munechika
Theses
This study evaluates several methods that enhance the spatial resolution of multispectral images using a finer resolution panchromatic image. The resultant hybrid, high resolution, multispectral data set has increased visible interpretation and improved classification accuracy, while preserving the radiometry of the original multispectral images. These methods can therefore be applied to create simulated high resolution multispectral data, as well as to enhance image analysis.

A Study Of Design Parameters Of A Road Racing Endurance Car, Donald N. Kords
Theses
Analytical methods are presented to assess design parameters and aerodynamic effects on a road racing endurance car design. A six degree of freedom model of the vehicle dynamics was used to determine the design equations and objectives. Some of the more important parameters investigated were vehicle mass and inertia, aerodynamic drag and down force, rolling resistance, center of gravity, cornering capacity and braking performance. The effects of these parameters on the vehicle acceleration, velocity, and lap times were investigated analytically and verified by data obtained by on-board instrumentation. Given nearly identical engine performance from car to car, the aerodynamic parameters, …

Small Disturbance Stability As Affected By Excitation Controls, Alfredo Flores
Small Disturbance Stability As Affected By Excitation Controls, Alfredo Flores
Theses
The effect of excitation control systems on the power system's small disturbance stability limits has been investigated in this thesis. Three excitation control schemes namely the proportional, fast?acting and the modified fast?acting have been studied.
The stability results were predicted directly in terms of the AVR gain controlling parameters following one?dimensional and two?dimensional frequency domain separation technique. The necessary algorithms and computer simulation programs have been developed.
In case of a modified fast?acting excitation control with three unknown variables, a procedure has been proposed to obtain the stability results by extending the two?dimensional frequency domain separation technique.
Effect Of Moisture On Microcircuit Failure, Chandrabala D. Patel
Effect Of Moisture On Microcircuit Failure, Chandrabala D. Patel
Theses
Stability and reliability of microcircuit is dependent on its design, fabrication, testing, storage and use.
In this thesis emphasis is given on various failure mechanisms of Integrated Circuits in humid environment and techniques of improving reliability. Other factors which affect the failure of integrated circuits are also discussed. Moisture induced failure modes, semi-reversible failures and irreversible failures (surface leakage current and corrosion-causing interruption of interconnection lines) are also reviewed.
Controlling the contaminants and moisture related corrosion are also covered. The quickest way to evaluate the reliability of microcircuit is by accelerated aging test and by selection of meaningful criteria of …

Damage Effects To Si-Sio2 Structures Due To Reactive Ion Etching, Moshe D. Bunyan
Theses
This thesis presents the damage effects to the Si ? SiO2 structures due to Reactive Ion Etching (RIE). The research was carried out on Si ? SiO2 MOS capacitors which were fabricated using RIE and wet etch (Hydrofluoric acid etch (HFE)) Process. The experiment was carried out using CV technique and Ellipsometry. Various electrical parameters were measured from CV *curves of these MOS capacitors. It was observed that the CV curve obtained for the RIE etched sample showed considerable deviation from that of the control sample. This indicates the presence of excess of interface trap charge density which …
Improving Solids Conveying In Plasticating Extruders : An Investigation Into Manufacturing Processes And Manufacturing Systems For Profiled Thermoplastic Pellets, Oommen Cherian
Theses
The objective of the thesis is the manufacture of thermoplastic bilobal and trilobal profiled pellets for the determination of the interparticulate co-efficient of friction exhibited by solid beds of such pellets. The enhancement of the interparticulate coefficient of friction is expected to lead to ameliorated solids conveying rates in plasticating extruders.
Predicting the product shape from a profile die is very difficult due to the elastic memory of plastics and the complex boundary conditions. Consequently the cost involved in experimenting with different profile dies is high. Therefore a standard die with several die inserts of varying cross-sections were used to …

Preparation Of A Bank Of Cloned Genes From The Chromosome Of Agrobacterium Tumefaciens And The Isolation Of Genes Involved In Dna Repair And Genetic Recombination, Geoffrey A. Bartholomeusz
Theses
The virulent property of the Agrobacterium tumefaciens is associated with its tumor inducing (Ti) plasmid. Recent studies on the virulence of this bacterium has shown that genes located on its chromosome also contribute to this property. One such gene is thought to produce a protein that has properties similar to that of the recA protein of E. colt. This thesis outlines the techniques that were used to try and isolate the recA-like gene from the chromosome of the Agrobacterium tumefaciens. All the techniques used in this study are outlined in detail and an explanation given for the choice of each …

The Influence Of The Position Of A Color Control Bar On A Form When Determining The Most Appropriate Location To Measure Variability In Solid Ink Density And Dot Gain Of A Printed Product, Kevin B. Leines
Theses
This study proposed to determine the most appropriate place to measure variability in dot gain and solid ink density on a form using color control bars. The study developed a form that entailed three GATF/SWOP, 133 line color control bars placed strategically at the lead, middle and trail edges of the sheet. The test set specific density standards to control to, and while these densities were being controlled, samples were obtained that represented a typical press run. Each of the control bar set-ups was treated as a separate press run, allowing the press operator to change the set densities to …
A Study Of The Accuracy Of Reproduction Of Measured Photography: A Method To Equate The Tonal Range Of The Color Transparency To The Tonal Of The Photomechanical Reproduction, Michael Grant Scala
A Study Of The Accuracy Of Reproduction Of Measured Photography: A Method To Equate The Tonal Range Of The Color Transparency To The Tonal Of The Photomechanical Reproduction, Michael Grant Scala
Theses
The density range of a color transparency greatly exceeds the density range capacity of reproductions with ink on paper. It is therfore necessary to perform tone compression. Traditionally, tone compression is accomplished by the color separator and involves subjective decisions without input from the photographer. Tone reproduction of the final image is a result of image manipulation by different people in production who are not in communication with each other. Consequently, image quality may suffer and important image detail may be lost as a result of improper estimates.
