An Object-Oriented Drawing Package In Smalltalk/V, Sigrid E. Mortensen Jan 1991

An Object-Oriented Drawing Package In Smalltalk/V, Sigrid E. Mortensen

Theses

Graphics creation applications tend to fall into two categories: bit-mapped paint packages, and object-oriented drawing packages. Although each interface has its own unique advantages, few vendors have attempted to integrate the two into a single package. Those who have tried have, in fact, poor integration both from the user's perspective and in the underlying mathematical model. In this thesis, I have addressed the issue of integrating bit-mapped and object-oriented interfaces by creating an object-oriented graphics package which provides the user with a consistent interface for creating and manipulating both graphical objects and bit-mapped graphics. The consistency of the interface was …

Optimal Linearization Of Anharmonic Oscillators, Jungkun Lee Jan 1991

Optimal Linearization Of Anharmonic Oscillators, Jungkun Lee

Theses

This investigation is based on the geometric analysis of phase trajectories and incurred vector fields associated with nonlinear oscillators. Optimal curve fitting techniques are applied in the phase plane, in an effort to generate a so-called "geometric averaging". The results are then compared with those generated by classical techniques such as harmonic balance and equivalent linearization, as well as by numerical integration. The investigation is extended to nonlinear mult iple-degree-of -freedom systems. Frequencies of oscillations and mode shapes are derived based on the optimal equivalent linearization process. The results are also compared with numerical integration for justification. It is shown …

Computational Methods For Contact Stress Problems With Normal And Tangential Loading, Christopher R. Mcgoldrick Jan 1991

Computational Methods For Contact Stress Problems With Normal And Tangential Loading, Christopher R. Mcgoldrick

Theses

This investigation contains an historical overview of contact stresses including various classifications of the problem and their associated solutions. The solution for the normal loading elliptical contact problem is reviewed, as formulated using classic methods of linear elasticity theory. An efficient computational method is developed to evaluate the elliptic integrals that arise. The limitations of this solution are investigated in detail and it is shown how the method could be extended to the sliding elliptical contact problem. Practical applications of contact stresses are included with an emphasis on mechanical design. Differences between the continuum model and the behavior of real …

Adaptive Stack Filtering By Lms And Perceptron Learning, Yu-Chou Huang

Theses

Stack filters are a class of sliding?window nonlinear digital filters that possess the weak superposition property(threshold decomposition) and the ordering property known as the stacking property. They have been demonstrated to be robust in suppressing noise. Two methods are introduced in this thesis to adaptively configure a stack filter. One is by employing the Least Mean Square(LMS) algorithm and the other is based on Perceptron learning.

Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods to noise suppression.

Molecular Modeling Studies Of Anatoxin Agonist Analogues, Qizhan Yao Dec 1990

Molecular Modeling Studies Of Anatoxin Agonist Analogues, Qizhan Yao

Theses

Thirty two anatoxin agonist analogues were investigated by means of computerassisted molecular modeling studies to delinate factors that may contribute to potency. The structures were generated from the fragment libraries from the SYBYL program, and minimized by the MM2 program. Then a systematic conformational search was done based on the global minimized structures to get bioactive conformations.

Ten agonists were further studied after the conformation optimization. The most potent agonists among these analogues, (+)-anatoxin-a (11), about 300 times as potent as carbamylcholine, severed as a template for the rest to examine the superimposability of the hydrogen bonding acceptor site and …

An Investigation Of Optoelectronic Integrated Circuit Receiver, Dinar S. Gupte

Theses

This thesis report presents an investigation of an OptoElectronic Integrated receiver Circuit (OEIC). An OEIC on Silicon (Si) substrate is analyzed and simulated as part of this investigation. The OEIC is based on GaAs technology. The advantages of this are its compactness, high speed, low noise and high reliability in light wave communication systems. A higher output signal is required to make such devices suitable for practical applications. This is achieved by the use of a cascode stage. The fabrication techniques of the relevant semiconductor devices have also been discussed.

In light wave communication systems, the region of minimum losses …

Analysis Of Field Distribution Of A Dielectric Resonator And Its Applications, Manohar R. Kamath Dec 1990

Analysis Of Field Distribution Of A Dielectric Resonator And Its Applications, Manohar R. Kamath

Theses

Dielectric resonators (DR) are suitably shaped objects made of high dielectric constant materials like TiO2, BaO, ZnO, and accessory ingredients, which can function as electrical resonators covering a very wide frequency range upto 40GHz. The physical dimensions of dielectric resonators are in mm range. High dielectric constant material resonators seem to be ideally suited for microwave applications because of their miniature size, low loss, insensitivity to magnetic dc biasing fields, and ability to concentrate large RF magnetic fields in small volumes. However temperature stabilization of dielectric resonators is an important consideration as the center frequency is a function …

Performance Evaluation Of Extended Token Ring Network Under Message Priorities, Prakash B. Kukadia Dec 1990

Performance Evaluation Of Extended Token Ring Network Under Message Priorities, Prakash B. Kukadia

Theses

Local Area Networks carrying multiple priority classes of messages have received considerable attention recently. A simulation model of a symmetric, priority based network, consisting of token ring networks interconnected by a bridge is implemented. Messages are divided into two priority classes, namely, high priority classes and low priority classes. Two different approaches are considered for transmission of high priority messages. [1] Each station transmits the same amount of high priority traffic when the token reaches the station, regardless of the time elapsed from previous token arrival. [2] The amount of high priority traffic transmitted by each station may vary at …

Cascading Of Ever Adaptive Variation Of Lzw Algorithm With Arithmetic Coding Method, Ramesh Vishwanatham, Ketan Tejani

Theses

Two known compression algorithms appropriate for communication are LZW and the Arithmetic Coding method. Both algorithms are adaptive and require no extra communication from the encoder to the decoder. We have considered a variation of LZW algorithm known as Online version which result in better compression. Here we present a scheme to cascade Online LZW with Arithmetic algorithms into an Ever Adaptive data compression algorithm which achieves higher compression ratio and is appropriate for communication.

Simulation Study Of Monolithic 8-12 Micron Gaas/Algaas Multiple Quantum Well Infrared Image Sensor, Ye Zhu

Theses

The design of a monolithic 8-12 micron GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well infrared image sensor has been tested by computer simulation using PISCES-IIB and SPICE3B.1 software packages. The device structure is in the form of a monolithic GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) photoconductor integrated with a GaAs MESFET readout circuit. The readout MESFET's are located in the top layer of the MQW so that a relatively standard GaAs MESFET design and processing technology can be used. The theoretical feasibility of such a vertically integrated structure and the processing compatibility of GaAs/AlGaAs MQW and GaAs MESFET's were investigated in this work.

A Transistor Delay Model Based On Charge Conservation, Bharatsingh K. Bisen Dec 1990

A Transistor Delay Model Based On Charge Conservation, Bharatsingh K. Bisen

Theses

Delay information of a circuit is often used in the areas of timing verification, timing analysis, race detection and circuit optimization. Given a circuit its delay can be estimated by various simulation techniques. SPICE is one of the simulation techniques, but it is seen that with the increase in the complexity of the circuit the SPICE circuit simulation technique to obtain delay information become cumbersome and computationally too expensive. So as to overcome the above disadvantages of the circuit simulation technique to obtain delay information various timing delay models were developed. However general survey of most of these timing delay …

Integrated Component-Based Computer Design Modeling System : The Implications Of The Representation Of Control Parameters On The Design Process, Allen D. Jablonski Dec 1990

Integrated Component-Based Computer Design Modeling System : The Implications Of The Representation Of Control Parameters On The Design Process, Allen D. Jablonski

Theses

The design process is dependent on a clear order of integrating and managing all of the control parameters that impact on a building's design. All component elements of a building must be defined by their: Physical and functional relations; Quantitative and calculable properties; Component and/or system functions. This requires a means of representation to depict a model of a building that can be viewed and interpreted by a variety of interested parties. These parties need different types of representation to address their individual control parameters, as each component instance has specific implications on all of the control parameters.

Representations are …

Theses

The application of a landmark based approach in recognizing 3-D rigid planar objects[3] along with two different motion and structure estimation algorithm [21][23] have been studied to perform motion and structure estimation tasks of moving objects. The recognition algorithm is based on a sphericity value derived from affine transformation that maps feature points in the object under observation from first to second view in the 2-D image space. The motion and structure estimation algorithm is based on a unique mapping given four or more feature point correspondences.

More than ten experiments have been done including small and large rigid motions. …

A Pc Based Computer Model With A Postprocessor For The Movement Of Groundwater, Joseph Byra Dec 1990

A Pc Based Computer Model With A Postprocessor For The Movement Of Groundwater, Joseph Byra

Theses

Currently available computer programs that model groundwater flow are inherently limited in their capabilities, in one way or another. Additionally, many of these computer programs are relatively inaccessible to the general user because they operate off of mainframe computers and sophisticated plotters. As a result, a simple to use computer program called 2DFLOW has been modified so it can be run on a personal IBM compatible computer. It models steady-state fluid flow through saturated porous media. In addition, a postprocessor called 2DPLOT has been developed. The postprocessor generates the equipotential contours and the flux vectors that describe the physics of …

Digital Correlators For Spread Spectrum Communications, Raymond B. Chadwick Dec 1990

Digital Correlators For Spread Spectrum Communications, Raymond B. Chadwick

Theses

The design and application, in spread spectrum communications, of a digital correlator implemented in a Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Array is presented. Spread spectrum communications, correlators and Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Arrays are first introduced. A digital correlator is designed and implemented in a Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Array. The maximum operating frequency of the digital correlator is calculated and simulated to be 40 Mhz; a significant speed improvement over commercially available correlators such as those from TRW.

The Legal Status Of Strikers And Replacement Workers, Chun-Shu Su Dec 1990

The Legal Status Of Strikers And Replacement Workers, Chun-Shu Su

Theses

On labor-management dispute, each party to the negotiation seeks to protect its economic interests by extracting concession from the other. Both union and management back up their demands with the threat of pressure tactics which would inflict economic harm upon the other party. If the negotiations reach an impasse, a labor union's most powerful weapon at the bargaining table is the credible threat of a strike, a protected right under the National Labor Relations Act. On the other hand, the management may use lockouts or hire new employees to replace those striking workers to force concessions.

Hiring permanent replacements has …

Recovering Surface Structure Using Direct Method, Zhu Ying Dec 1990

Recovering Surface Structure Using Direct Method, Zhu Ying

Theses

A new approach to recovering surface structure from a pair of stereo images is proposed in this thesis. The approach is based on an extension of the concept of optical flow to a spatial sequence of images. z.e., the unified optical field (DOFF). A direct method in spatial domain is developed which is able to recover surface structure that can be characterized by an Nth order polynomial equation. The order N of the surface can be one. a planar surface. or two, a cylindrical or spherical surface. for example. or any number higher than two. This is a big improvement …

Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Benchscale And Pilot Plant Studies, Yaoli He Dec 1990

Microwave Treatment Of Hazardous Wastes : Benchscale And Pilot Plant Studies, Yaoli He

Theses

Microwave treatment of hazardous wastes was studied on both bench-scale and pilot plant scales. Bench-scale studies were carried out on two processes: steam distillation to effect the removal of volatile and semi-volatile organics from substrata like soil; immobilization of heavy metals like chromium in soil.

The pilot plant work involved the start-up of a newly-installed facility and the determination of the efficiency of energy transfer from the power system to a load.

It was found that microwave generated steam within the substratum effects the distillation of naphthalene in both sandy soil and clay soil, respectively; 95% removal is effected within …

How Affirmative Is Affirmative?, Shu-Fen Hsu Dec 1990

How Affirmative Is Affirmative?, Shu-Fen Hsu

Theses

Since January 1989, the US Supreme Court has launched a major offensive on affirmative action and civil rights law. The biggest target of the attack is Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which bars employment discrimination. As a result, access to private and public contracts for all but the largest black businesses will virtually be nonexistent. For black means decreasing employment and mobility opportunities in the workplace. In addition, complainants will have a more difficult time bringing forth and winning discrimination suits. Racial tension now has a stronger - although subtler - presence in the US. The ascent …
