Laser Treatment Of Ceramic Coatings On Defective Ceramic Glazed Tile, Gousinn Yu Jan 1994

Laser Treatment Of Ceramic Coatings On Defective Ceramic Glazed Tile, Gousinn Yu

Theses

Laser surface melting treatment was achieved by a 2 Kw CO2 surgical laser system. The partially defocused laser beam provided a circular spot with an annular energy distribution on the sample.

It is certain that laser surface treatment will do the job of repairing in defective ceramic tiles. All glazes provided by American Standard were tested for an ability of withstand laser treatment when coated on to a glazed tile. In order to repair the defective ceramic tile it is necessary to patch the damaged region with a cement. The cement must then be glazed in order to match that of …

Measurement Of Heart Rate Variability Using Correlation Dimension And Entropy, Su Zhang Jan 1994

Measurement Of Heart Rate Variability Using Correlation Dimension And Entropy, Su Zhang

Theses

Heart rate variability regulation is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Disorders of the autonomic nervous system may cause the loss of heart rate variability. Two new approaches, correlation dimension and entropy, based on ideas from nonlinear dynamics, have been applied to studying heart rate variability. The correlation dimension measures the extent of correlation between the data points. The entropy measures the amount of information needed to specify the state of a system. The interbeat interval signal (1BI) from eighteen subjects (nine normal controls and nine patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) ) have been analyzed and compared. The results …

Contour Extraction From Hvem Image Of Microvessel Using Active Contour Models, Manping Xiao Jan 1994

Contour Extraction From Hvem Image Of Microvessel Using Active Contour Models, Manping Xiao

Theses

This thesis reports the research results on automatic contour extraction from high voltage electron microscope (HVEM) image of thick cross section montages of small blood vessels. The previous work on this subject, which was based on the conventional edge detection operations combined with edge linking, has proven inadequate to describe the inner structural compartments of microvessels. In this thesis, an active contour model (commonly referred to as "Snakes") has been applied to advance the previous work. Active contour models have proven themselves to be a powerful and flexible paradigm for many problems in image understanding, especially in contour extraction from …

The Floral Ploy "Pieced, Painted, Printed", Shannon Pfaff

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to take a complex concept and redefine it visually. The theory of brain evolution has been, and will continue to be in debate both scientifically and spiritually. Since the brain, or the mind, is the center of thought, it seems fitting that a search for unity begin here. Art and science, art and religion, science and religion, are not at opposite ends. Reason and emotion, instinct and intellect, power and surrender, can come together and exist in harmony. It is the goal of this thesis to explore how, through examining the inner workings of …

A Study Of Gray Level Recording Capability For A Reflective Six Bit Desktop Scanner, Julio E. González Jan 1994

A Study Of Gray Level Recording Capability For A Reflective Six Bit Desktop Scanner, Julio E. González

Theses

A common problem with CCD sensors is their inefficiency to accurately record gray level information in the shadow range of an image. This problem is magnified on original copy having important detail in the midtone to shadow range. Consequently, when this type of an image is scanned gray levels in the shadow range of the reproduction are not easily discerned. This study examines two areas, the recording consistency across the scanning sensor and the gray level recording for a desktop six bit scanner. The former determined how consistently density information is recorded across the sensor, while the latter determines the …

A Layout Algorithm For Hierarchical Graphs With Constraints, Michael Slade Jan 1994

A Layout Algorithm For Hierarchical Graphs With Constraints, Michael Slade

Theses

A new method is developed for reducing edge crossings in the layout of directed graphs for display. The method will reduce edge crossings in graphs which have constraints on the location or movement of some of the nodes. This has not been available in previously published methods. An analysis of the strategies used to choose rank pairs for edge crossing reduction shows that this choice will dramatically affect the amount of crossings eliminated. This method is directly applicable to the reduction of edge crossings in the general graph.
