The Use And Evaluation Of Cleaner Wicks To Accelerate In Situ Bioremediation Of Organically Contaminated Groundwater And Soil, Brian Michael Sielski Oct 1994

The Use And Evaluation Of Cleaner Wicks To Accelerate In Situ Bioremediation Of Organically Contaminated Groundwater And Soil, Brian Michael Sielski

Theses

The adaptation of Cleaner Wicks to accelerate in situ bioremediation of organically contaminated ground water and soil can be accomplished by making minor modifications to the Cleaner Wick design.

Once these changes in the Cleaner Wick design have been made the two primary ingredients necessary for aerobic microorganisms, nutrients and oxygen, can be delivered via the Cleaner Wick to the subsurface environment both above and below the water table to stimulate microbial growth and activity. Therefore, the microbial population will be able to biodegrade the target contaminants, rendering them harmless products such as carbon dioxide and water.

An adequate understanding …

Cityscapes: Solitude And Introspection, Fred G. Monti Oct 1994

Cityscapes: Solitude And Introspection, Fred G. Monti

Theses

The paintings, in this series, deal with the psychology of the urban landscape. Sky lines, night scenes, and the human figure were examined. City structures, inhabitants, and the elements which make them up, become symbolic: catalysts for contemplation. The commonplace becomes metaphysical. The city is a foreign vacuum; a spiritual nomads land. Buildings, bus shelters, steel and glass become a compositional prison. Like an enigmatic halfway house, we have entered urban limbo. This group of paintings is a commentary on such imagery. Specifically, they are visual impressions of its numbing effect on the human psyche.

Automatic Visual Inspection Of Placement Of Bare Dies In Multichip Modules, Mahesh Chheda Oct 1994

Automatic Visual Inspection Of Placement Of Bare Dies In Multichip Modules, Mahesh Chheda

Theses

Multichip Modules are gaining lot of popularity in today's IC technology, as they are good solutions for high density packaging. This thesis presents a method for checking the placement of bare dies on a common substrate of an MCM. This testing is done using Automatic Visual Inspection (AVI), which is better and more reliable, compared to manual inspection. Comparison is the basis in this thesis to detect faults in an MCM. The MCM to be tested is compared with a known good ideal MCM using image processing techniques. The mismatches, if any, between these two images, i.e. image of an …

Form As Symbol: Allure And Defense, Alexandra Hart Oct 1994

Form As Symbol: Allure And Defense, Alexandra Hart

Theses

In my thesis, I explore some recurrent ideas which I have become aware of in my work. The central idea of the work is to explore my fascination with the beauty that I find in organic form, specifically forms in nature which have a defensive function. Though the function of my work is not to defend, I explore the form itself in terms of its visual impact on the viewer. Another component of the work is my attempt to reconcile my respect and admiration for the jewelry that has been done in the past with the contemporary emphasis on creating …

Fuzzy Approach For Arabic Character Recognition, Adnan El-Nasan Oct 1994

Fuzzy Approach For Arabic Character Recognition, Adnan El-Nasan

Theses

Pattern recognition/classification is increasingly drawing the attention of scientific research because of its important roll in automation and human-machine communication. Even though many models have been introduced to deal with classification, because of the inherited imprecision and ambiguity, these models did not tackle the problem in an efficient way. Traditional models deal only with statistical uncertainty (randomness) but not with the non-statistical uncertainty (vagueness). Fuzzy set theory allows us to better understand imprecision in both of its categories: vagueness and randomness. The incorporation of fuzzy set theory in existing algorithms helped in many cases to improve the performance and increase …

Aging Archetypes In Latter Life: Mythic Characterizations Of Six Psychosocial Microstages, Bernadette Carol Randle Sep 1994

Aging Archetypes In Latter Life: Mythic Characterizations Of Six Psychosocial Microstages, Bernadette Carol Randle

Theses

The use of myth to examine and explain the human condition is axiomatic in most cultures and traditions. One reason is myth and folklore frequently provide illuminating metaphors for the universal life themes of human experience. In western culture, literature is one of the more powerful transmitters of attitudes toward aging and psychological issues that confront the aged (e.g., mental and emotional declension, human interaction with the environment., and the impact of the environment on the aging individual). The purpose of this research is to examine popular and classical literature for representative archetypes that correspond to the predictable life stages …

Computational Analysis Of The Flow Field In A Baffled Mixing Tank, Daniel C. Kellem Aug 1994

Computational Analysis Of The Flow Field In A Baffled Mixing Tank, Daniel C. Kellem

Theses

The fluid motion in a mixing tank was studied using a CFD code. The particular focus was given to the accurate representation of the role of baffles in a mixing tank. By rebuilding the boundary conditions at each time step the complete effects of the relative motion between the baffles and impeller is captured. This has allowed for an accurate Computational Fluid Dynamic representation of the flow in a baffled mixing tank. In addition, the development of the model has been automated through the use of geometry and mesh definition files. The combination of these two aspects has allowed for …

The Generation And Comparison Of Multispectral Synthetic Textures, Robert A. Rose Aug 1994

The Generation And Comparison Of Multispectral Synthetic Textures, Robert A. Rose

Theses

The Musique Multispectral Texture (MMT) model is a method of adding realistic multispectral textures to synthetic images created using DIRSIG (Digital Imaging and Remotes Sensing laboratories Image generation Model). This method relies on an input texture image and a large family of reflectance curves which represent the desired texture material. This thesis has two main objectives. The first is to determine the best method of generating the input textures, and the second is to test the quality of the multispectral textures generated by the MMT model. The testing will involve both statistical and human visual analysis. The thesis intends to …

Development Of Sensitometric Techniques For The Characterization Of Stereolithographic Resins, Rudd Matthew Hardesty Aug 1994

Development Of Sensitometric Techniques For The Characterization Of Stereolithographic Resins, Rudd Matthew Hardesty

Theses

Four desktop sensitometers of stereolithographic resins were created and tested against the characteristic curves of the resins produced under exposure conditions used with a Stereolithographic Apparatus. Two sensitometers measure the percent conversion as a function of exposure, one measures the optical density, and the fourth is an attempt to reproduce the characteristic curve with an alternate exposure source. It was concluded that the slopes of the characteristic curves can be determined by measuring the optical density of the resins. However, the slopes cannot be determined by measuring the percent conversion of the resins as a function of exposure. The critical …

Image Transformation Into Device Dependent Color Printer Description Using 4th-Order Polynomial Regression And Labview Object Oriented Programming Development Of Image Processing Modules, Michael Mongeon Aug 1994

Image Transformation Into Device Dependent Color Printer Description Using 4th-Order Polynomial Regression And Labview Object Oriented Programming Development Of Image Processing Modules, Michael Mongeon

Theses

This thesis investigates the development of printer device profiles used in color document printing system environments when devices with intrinsically different gamut capabilities communicate with one another in a common (CIELAB) color space. While the main thrust of this activity focuses on the output printer, namely the Xerox 5760 printer, and its rendition of some device independent image description, characterizations are provided which investigate relative areas of photographic, monitor, and printer gamuts using a visual hue leaf comparison between devices at standard hue angles determined from a Kodak photographic Q60C. The printer is modeled using 4th-order polynomial regression which maps …

Color Reproduction Of Crt-Displayed Images As Projected Transparencies, Audrey A. Lester Aug 1994

Color Reproduction Of Crt-Displayed Images As Projected Transparencies, Audrey A. Lester

Theses

This thesis evaluated the color appearance predictions of four digital color transforms (Hunt, RLAB, CIELAB, and von Kries) between CRT "original" images, viewed in a lighted room, and projected slides, viewed in the dark. Calibrated projection of these images required resolution of several complex issues. Upon projection, the slide colors changed. A rapid color shift (on the order of 75 seconds) was followed by a slower, steady degradation which also had to be minimized for accurate image presentation. Therefore, a model of the film behavior was based upon dye absorptivities and color measurements of slides as they were projected. The …

Analysis Of Supersaturated Designs, Harrison Kelly Aug 1994

Analysis Of Supersaturated Designs, Harrison Kelly

Theses

In today's fiercely competitive marketplace, successful and profitable companies distinguish themselves by bringing new products to market before their competitors. The cycle time to develop and launch new products largely depends on a company's ability to study large numbers of factors and to separate, or detect, the significant factors from the insignificant factors. Most ordinary experimental situations with many variables are easily satisfied with the use of a saturated, or nearly-saturated, fractional factorial experimental designs. However, there are occasions where the cost of mnning a statistically designed experiment can be so great as to prohibit the use of these techniques, …

Design And Characterization Of An Amperometric Glucose Detector For Flow Injection Analysis, Jean Wallace Aug 1994

Design And Characterization Of An Amperometric Glucose Detector For Flow Injection Analysis, Jean Wallace

Theses

An amperometric glucose detector, based on platinized membrane electrodes, for use in flow injection analysis has been designed and characterized. The platinized electrodes prepared for the sensor were constructed from a perfluorinated polymer matrix, Nafion 117, through an impregnation-reduction technique. This technique encompasses the incorporation of platinum (II) ions into the polymer, which are subsequently reduced to platinum (0). Once constructed, the platinized impregnated membrane (PIM) electrodes were characterized electrochemically, under both aqueous and non-aqueous conditions. The PIM electrodes were shown to preconcentrate ions of varying size and charge, as well as retain the complex ionic molecules necessary for mediation …

Crystallization Kinetics Of Poly (Ethylene Oxide), Frances Segouin Aug 1994

Crystallization Kinetics Of Poly (Ethylene Oxide), Frances Segouin

Theses

The three main goals of this project are to determine the molecular weight dependence of polyethylene oxide) on the 1) morphology of crystalline material, as seen with the polarizing light microscope, 2) nucleation of the crystalline phase, as demonstrated with an annealing study, and 3) parameters of a mathematical model for crystallization kinetics. Bulk crystallization kinetics of polyethylene oxide) from the melt have been studied for a large molecular weight range, 1500 g/mol to 7,000,000 g/mol. The effects of molecular weight and cooling rate on the width and degree of supercooling of DSC crystallization exotherms have been studied to determine …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Low-Melting Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Poly(Ester-Imide)S., Sunny Jacob

Theses

Two new series of low-melting liquid crystalline poly(ester-imide)s, (PEIM(s)) containing biphenyldiimide mesogen with a high aspect ratio was prepared by the polycondensation of ll-(3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxydiimido)-bis undecanoic acid with various aliphatic diols and methyl esters of hydroquinone and 4,4'-biphenol by melt polymerization. The mesogenic diimide diacid was prepared by reacting 3,3',4,4'- biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride with 11 -amino undecanoic acid using the method of Augl and Wrasidlo. The synthesized polymers were characterized by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), IR Spectroscopy, Dilute Solution Viscosity, Thermogravimetry (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Polarizing Light Microscopy (PLM). The data obtained from GPC indicated the presence of a wide …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of A Bis(4-(3-(4-Phenoxy)Propionitrile))-N,N'-Disalicylidene-1,2-Phenylenediamino)Zirconium(Iv),Zr(Nitrile)2 And The Attempted Sythesis Of Zr(Amine)2 And Coordination Polymers Contaning Zr(Dspoh)2, Kathy-Jo Brodsky Aug 1994

The Synthesis And Characterization Of A Bis(4-(3-(4-Phenoxy)Propionitrile))-N,N'-Disalicylidene-1,2-Phenylenediamino)Zirconium(Iv),Zr(Nitrile)2 And The Attempted Sythesis Of Zr(Amine)2 And Coordination Polymers Contaning Zr(Dspoh)2, Kathy-Jo Brodsky

Theses

The synthesis of a series of bis(quadridentate)zirconium(IV) complexes, that can be considered as derivatives of the model complex, bis(N,N'-disalicylidene-l,2-phenylenediaminozirconium (IV), Zr(dsp)2, was conducted in order to produce zirconium coordination complexes with reactive terminal groups that would undergo ligand centered polymerization reactions. The previously reported Zr(dspOH)2 complex and the previously unreported Zr(nitrile)2 (shown below) and Zr(amide)2 complexes were synthesized, purified and characterized by FTIR, *H NMR and elemental analysis. The attempted polymerization reactions of Zr(dspOH)2 with diacid chlorides did not yield the desired linear coordination polymers. The attempted reduction of Zr(nitrile)2 to Zr(amine)2 was not successful via catalytic hydrogenation or chemical …

Visual Assessment Of Object Color Chroma And Colorfulness, Jason Peterson Aug 1994

Visual Assessment Of Object Color Chroma And Colorfulness, Jason Peterson

Theses

A series of visual experiments were designed to determine whether naive observers typically evaluate chroma or colorfulness when judging color appearance. A total of 7 observers were asked to determine a color appearance match between Munsell samples under the same illuminant (C) at different levels of illuminance. Color appearance matches were determined for 12 Munsell samples, under five reference and matching scene illuminance conditions, for four experimental techniques. The four experimental techniques were haploscopic, simultaneous inspection, successive inspection, and short-term memory matching. Results suggested that a chroma match was most important when observers were evaluating the color appearance of two …

Comparing The Ability Of Subjective Quality Factor And Information Theory To Predict Image Quality, Shyi-Shyang Li Aug 1994

Comparing The Ability Of Subjective Quality Factor And Information Theory To Predict Image Quality, Shyi-Shyang Li

Theses

The purpose of this project is to compare the ability of the Subjective Quality Factor and Information Theory to predict image quality as a function of film speed for two different methods of exposing film. One exposure holds the total number of photons constant and the other allows the flux to vary. This study will: 1 . Determine the relationship between grain size and image quality for constant flux when the resulting images are reproduced at the same size. 2. Compare the resulting granularity and image quality of the constant flux condition with the normal exposure method of varying the …

Blind Equalization, Daniel Diguele Aug 1994

Blind Equalization, Daniel Diguele

Theses

An equalizer is an adaptive filter that compensates for the non-ideal characteristics of a communication channel by processing the received signal. The adaptive algorithm searches for the inverse impulse response of the channel, and it requires knowledge of a training sequence, in order to generate an error signal necessary for the adaptive process. There are practical situations where it would be highly desirable to achieve complete adaptation without the use of a training sequence, hence the the term "blind". Examples of these situations are multipoint data networks, high-capacity line-of-sight digital radio, and reflection seismology. A blind adaptive algorithm has been …
