Automated Detection Of Effective Scene Illuminant Chromaticity From Specular Highlights In Digital Images, Wayne Richard
Automated Detection Of Effective Scene Illuminant Chromaticity From Specular Highlights In Digital Images, Wayne Richard
Theses
An advanced, automated method is presented for determining an effective scene illuminant chromaticity (scene illuminant plus imaging system variables) from specular highlights in digital images subsequent to image capture. Underlying theories are presented based on a two component reflection model where the scene illuminant relative spectral power distribution is preserved in the specular component. Related methodologies for extracting scene illuminant information as well as alternative methods for achieving color constancy are presented along with factors which inhibit successful implementation. Following, development of a more robust algorithm is discussed. This algorithm is based on locating the center of convergence of a …

The Effects Of Gender, National Origin, Purpose Of Travel, Length Of Stay And Seasonality On Guest's Satisfaction Levels, Brenda Cruz Valentin
Theses
This study focuses on identifying the effects of customer's gender, national origin, purpose of travel, length of stay, and seasonality on their perception of service at an international hotel in the Caribbean.
Assessing customer's expectations through collection and analysis of comment cards are critical to assure a high quality delivery of service. Therefore, the problem is that statistical analysis and effective use of customer comment cards, which are designed to identify potential complaining patterns in order to improve service for an international hotel, does not occur.
This study involved an analysis of a sample of 57.2% out of a total …
Ccd Photometry And The Stellar Content Of The Central Region Of Ic 1805, David Bretz
Ccd Photometry And The Stellar Content Of The Central Region Of Ic 1805, David Bretz
Theses
Images of the central region of the open cluster IC 1805 were made with a 2033 x 2044 Kodak CCD imager using broad-band filters corresponding closely to the standard B, V, R, I, system of Johnson. Calibrated magnitudes were measured for 136 stars in the cluster, and temperatures and masses were estimated for 115 of these. A mass function was derived as defined by Scalo (1986) and is compared with an earlier determination for this cluster. The mass function also is compared with that of a similar star-forming region in Cygnus and with the initial mass function of field stars. …

A General Method For The Inverse Kinematics Of Rotational Displacements In Spatial Mechanisms, John D. Kliminski
A General Method For The Inverse Kinematics Of Rotational Displacements In Spatial Mechanisms, John D. Kliminski
Theses
An iterative technique was developed to solve the inverse kinematics problem for the joint rotations in both closed-loop and open-loop spatial mechanisms and robotic manipulators in any prescribed configuration. The method is based on fixing one link in space and maneuvering the other links to form a closed chain, following an approximation of the actual physical assembly of the mechanism. In order to apply the same principle to both types of mechanisms, an open-loop mechanism was modeled as a closed-loop mechanism by creating a fictitious fixed link in the free space between the base and the end of the chain …
Creating A Favorable Sentiment: Allensworth, California, Myra Frances Burton
Creating A Favorable Sentiment: Allensworth, California, Myra Frances Burton
Theses
As the nineteenth century drew to a close, most Americans expressed optimism for the future. In the decades following the Civil War, the United States emerged as a burgeoning industrial nation, a nation filled with opportunity and promise. However, not all Americans shared this optimism. For African-Americans, the future would be remarkably similar to the past. From 1865-1877, AfricanAmericans enjoyed a new status in society. The thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments to the constitution conferred a measure of legal equality upon blacks, raising hopes of eventual social inclusion in American society. These hopes vanished in the wake of a new …
San Lucas: The History Of A California Cattle Town, Matthew James Gildersleeve
San Lucas: The History Of A California Cattle Town, Matthew James Gildersleeve
Theses
If one follows the Salinas River from its source in the mountains of Santa Barbara north to where it pours into the Monterey Bay, one comes across many settlements along its banks. Such a settlement is San Lucas. With a population of fewer than 500 and little industry the town has been left to wither away in sun baked South Monterey County. This had not always been the case, however, for San Lucas. Over one hundred years ago the settlement was paramount to Southern Monterey County. Once the hub of economic activity in this region, San Lucas boasted of many …
Hazard Recognition And Regulation : An Asbestos Chronology, Diane A. Colson
Hazard Recognition And Regulation : An Asbestos Chronology, Diane A. Colson
Theses
One hundred years after it was first mined, several uses of asbestos were banned in the United States. The latency period that typifies asbestos-related diseases was but one factor in the delayed recognition of asbestos as a health hazard. Many other factors delayed the initiation of practical measures to alleviate the hazards.
Controversies surrounding exposure to asbestos continue. Epidemiological studies have answered many questions, but many others are, and may remain, unanswered. Some of the controversies surrounding exposure to asbestos are embedded in the development of the United States of America as a country. An understanding of the historical basis …
A Silicon Knife Design And Fabrication, Mingli Wang
A Silicon Knife Design And Fabrication, Mingli Wang
Theses
In this thesis, the design and fabrication of a silicon knife is described. The device design is based on the principle of oxidation sharpening.
The knife is made from a silicon wafer and can be made to be any chosen length up to 150 mm. It was made with the same basic procedures used in semiconductor chip manufacturing. This type of processing/manufacturing results in a knife with a high degree of sharpness and smoothness compared with existing knife technology.
The knife fabrication plan combines IC processing, techniques including anisotropic and isotropic etching of silicon, plasma dry etching and chemical etching …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Self-Reported Child Sexual Abuse History And Responses On The Beck Depression Inventory, Nancy K. Gongaware
Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine responses on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) between depressed women with a self-reported history of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) and depressed women who did not report such a history. The question to be studied was whether the responses on the BDI would generally be the same regardless of the client's abuse history. Forty women seeking treatment for depression at a Midwestern counseling center served as subjects for this study. They completed a self-report questionnaire, which included an item on abuse history, and the BDI. The group reporting a history of CSA had …
Illness Behavior In Meniere's Disease Patients, Dianne Riesenmy
Illness Behavior In Meniere's Disease Patients, Dianne Riesenmy
Theses
In order to determine whether or not vertiginous and nonvertiginous Meniere's disease patients differ in regard to certain emotional and psychosocial attitudes, ideas, affects, and attributions related to illness behavior, 30 Meniere's disease patients (16 vertiginous; 14 nonvertiginous) completed the Illness Behavior Questionnaire (IBO) either at a Meniere's support group meeting or through the mail. Comparison of sample mean scores revealed that the vertiginous group showed greater hypochondriasis and affective disturbance than did the nonvertiginous group. The nonvertiginous group demonstrated greater denial of life stressors not related to illness and greater psychological (rather than somatic) perception. The same group showed …

Effect Of Lead On Flexor Muscle Contraction And Photochemically-Induced Platelet Aggregation In Pial Microcirculation Of The Mouse, Amna Hamad Al Dhaheri
Effect Of Lead On Flexor Muscle Contraction And Photochemically-Induced Platelet Aggregation In Pial Microcirculation Of The Mouse, Amna Hamad Al Dhaheri
Theses
Lead is one of many heavy metal ions that can effectively compete for the binding sites of calcium, block the calcium channels and disturb the ion exchange. As a result, lead would be expected to affect the calcium-mediated cell functions. Muscle contraction and platelet aggregation are two important functions in which Ca2+ plays a major role and ultimately are affected by lead. Experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of lead on mouse flexor muscle contraction and on photochemically-induced platelet aggregation in pial microcirculation. A study of an acute exposure (1, 5, 10 and 25 µM) and a …

A Study To Determine The Relationship Between Emulsification And Tack Of Offset Lithographic Inks, Naruchart Boonkuernoon
A Study To Determine The Relationship Between Emulsification And Tack Of Offset Lithographic Inks, Naruchart Boonkuernoon
Theses
In offset lithography, ink has been shown to pickup significant quantities of fountain solution as emulsified droplets. Good printability of lithographic inks is dependent on the balance between the flow of ink and water (fountain solution). Water pickup of ink is directly related to emulsification capacity. Emulsification must be controlled by using the correct fountain solution and proper surface tension value of fountain solution. If inks do not properly emulsify, ink tack may vary on the press during printing. Ink tack is expected to strongly influence printability and runnability of offset lithographic inks. Tack measurement is used as a production …
Designing A Typeface, Margaret Luise Koschembahr
Designing A Typeface, Margaret Luise Koschembahr
Theses
The purpose of this project was to design a typeface, using digital methods, and in so doing to explore the use of current type design software. In this project, letterforms that were originally produced by hand with a pen were translated into electronic data, taking the final form of a digital typeface. Photographic images of manuscript letterforms were enlarged; from the enlarged letterforms hand-rendered outlines were created. These outlines were scanned electronically and imported into a type design software program. Digital outlines of each character were created, from which a PostScript typeface was generated and printed. The result of the project …

Tissue Parameter Determination With Mri In The Presence Of Imperfect Radiofrequency Pulses, Xing Li
Tissue Parameter Determination With Mri In The Presence Of Imperfect Radiofrequency Pulses, Xing Li
Theses
Magnetic resonance imaging has the major advantage over other medical imaging modalities in that it can provide superb soft tissue contrast. The contrast in a magnetic resonance image is determined by intrinsic tissue parameters such as spin-lattice relaxation time T1, spin-spin relaxation time T2, and spin density p. These tissue parameters can be extracted from a series of images obtained with appropriately designed pulse sequences, and be used in tissue characterization, classification, etc.. The accuracy of tissue parameter determination, however, is affected by a number of factors, one of which is the inhomogeneity of the radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic field. In …

A Comparison Between Waterless Lithography And Conventional Lithography, Chanassa Pichitgarnka
A Comparison Between Waterless Lithography And Conventional Lithography, Chanassa Pichitgarnka
Theses
Waterless lithography is one of the printing processes that was developed around 1968. It has a strong impact in the current printing industry. Like other printing processes, waterless lithography has both advantages and disadvantages. It is said that waterless lithography can print with more consistency and less dot gain than conventional lithography. However, it has one significant disadvantage, currently there is only one waterless lithographic plate supplier in the industry. There is very little quantitative data describing the waterless lithographic process to support the arguments that waterless lithography prints with more consistency and less dot gain. There is even a …
