The Symbolic Use Of Sea Shells In Design, Sunah Ahn
Theses
This thesis report details the various stages taken in the process of selecting a suitable topic for my graduate thesis, and moving through the various stages to complete an exhibition and an art book on the topic, The symbolic use of sea shells in design. Sea shells are an important design component in all of the visual arts. My thesis is an investigation into how four types of shells (scallop, nautilus, conch, and cowrie) have been used as signifiers in a variety of applications. My goal was to create a book that could be used by designers as a quick …
An Image Fusion Algorithm For Spatially Enhancing Spectral Mixture Maps, Harry Gross
An Image Fusion Algorithm For Spatially Enhancing Spectral Mixture Maps, Harry Gross
Theses
An image fusion algorithm, based upon spectral mixture analysis, is presented. The algorithm combines low spatial resolution multi/hyperspectral data with high spatial resolution sharpening image(s) to create high resolution material maps. Spectral (un)mixing estimates the percentage of each material (called endmembers) within each low resolution pixel. The outputs of unmixing are endmember fraction images (material maps) at the spatial resolution of the multispectral system. This research includes developing an improved unmixing algorithm based upon stepwise regression. In the second stage of the process, the unmixing solution is sharpened with data from another sensor to generate high resolution material maps. Sharpening …
M-Ary Run Length Limited Coding, Jian Luo
M-Ary Run Length Limited Coding, Jian Luo
Theses
This thesis consists of two parts: 1) a result of the rationality of channel capacity for the M -ary (d, k) constraint, and 2) a software package which has been designed to aid in the development of efficient, high density channel encoders for M -ary (d, k) constrained recording code. It has been written for the platforms of IBM PC or PC compatible and Sun Workstations. The designed software in this thesis involves three steps. The first step is to calculate the capacity of a RLL code after the user has chosen (M,d,k) . The channel capacity specifies the maximum …

Only In The Earth, Miran Lee
Only In The Earth, Miran Lee
Theses
In only a few short years, multimedia has become powerful and accepted enough to begin taking its rightful place in the changing the way we communicate. Communication in the '90s must accomplish two fundamental tasks: satiating the demanding aesthetic tastes and expectations of today's sophisticated viewing audiences, and navigating the vast amount of knowledge, facts, and statistics that comprise the "Information Age." Multimedia allows us to use the best combination of media to present com pelling information suited to specific situations. It allows user-control over how and when that information is accessed. "Only In The Earth" is the ultimate multimedia …
Modeling Of Road Vehicle Lateral Dynamics, Joseph Kiefer
Modeling Of Road Vehicle Lateral Dynamics, Joseph Kiefer
Theses
The lateral dynamics of a road vehicle is studied through the development of a mathematical model. The vehicle is represented with two degrees of freedom, lateral and yaw. Equations of motion are derived for this vehicle model from basic principles of Newtonian mechanics. Both linear and non-linear models are developed. In the linear model tire lateral forces are represented by an approximate linear relationship. Transfer functions are written for the vehicle system for various control and disturbance inputs. Steady-state and transient response characteristics and frequency response are studied, and numerical simulation of the model is performed. In the non-linear model …
Double-Power Transformations To Analyze Data, Erika Sato
Double-Power Transformations To Analyze Data, Erika Sato
Theses
Power transformations are commonly used in order to fit simpler and/or more appropriate models to data. These transformations are well-known and well-documented for cases where the predictor variables are not linearly constrained, unlike mixture experiments. In the case of mixture designs, however, for which linear constraints do exist, several linear models proposed in recent literature fall into a power transformation family; this suggests that similar transformations might be useful for mixture experiments, as well. The log-likelihood function for X and y, transformations on the response and predictor variables, was derived for the mixture case where the predictor variables are linearly …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Poly(Ester-Imide-Ether)S Exhibiting Liquid Crystallinity, Randy Pike
Theses
A series of novel thermotropic poly(ester-imide-ether)s were synthesized by melt polymerization techniques. The imide dimethyl ester: N-[(carbomethoxy) phenyl]-4-(carbomethoxy) phthalimide, prepared in a series of reactions, was reacted with varying ratios of poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol and 1,6 hexane diol to give the copolymers in 56% to 96% yield. The polymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, dilute solution viscosity, gel permeation chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and polarized optical microscopy. Inherent viscosity values range from 0.40 dl/g to 1.14 dl/g. Gel permeation chromatographic analysis of the initial polymer series showed number average molecular weights ranging from 32,000 g/mol to 100,000 g/mol. …
The Effect Of Cylindrical Obstructions On The Fluid Flow In Narrow Rectangular Channels, Gary Compagna
The Effect Of Cylindrical Obstructions On The Fluid Flow In Narrow Rectangular Channels, Gary Compagna
Theses
This thesis presents a computational fluid flow analysis in narrow rectangular channels, with regular spaced cylindrical disks acting as obstructions to fluid flow. The problem geometry is based on an approximation of the configuration used in a PCR detection chamber. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a method of DNA analysis that depends on the flow uniformity within the detection channel. The nominal channel is a narrow channel with a maximum gap height of 0.13 mm and a maximum width of 5.0 mm. The fluid flow rate and channel size result in a Reynolds number less than 5. The effect of …

Computational Analysis And Revision Of The Nayatani Et Al. Appearence Model, John Rahill
Theses
A literature search showed Nayatani 's color appearance model to be inferior to Hunt's model. The goal of this research was to determine what modifications could be made to improve Nayatani's model. The coefficients' (xi), (eta), and (zeta), in Nayatani's model represent the chromaticity coordinates of the illuminant in the fundamental primary system. These coefficients were used in calculating the effective adapting level for each cone and act as normalizing factors i n the calculation of Nayatani color space. The CSAJ data set was used to determine a baseline for Nayatani's model, and results from modifications were compared relative to …
Synthetic Simulation And Modeling Of Image Intensified Ccds (Iiccd), Emmett Ientilucci
Synthetic Simulation And Modeling Of Image Intensified Ccds (Iiccd), Emmett Ientilucci
Theses
Image intensifying cameras have been found to be extremely useful in low-light-level (LLL) scenarios including military night-vision and civilian rescue operations. These sensors utilize the available visible region photons and an amplification process to produce high-contrast imagery. Today's image intensifiers are usually attached to a CCD and incorporate a microchannel plate (MCP) for amplification purposes. These devices are commonly referred to as image intensified CCDs (IICCD). To date, there has not been much work in the area of still-frame, low-light-level simulations with radiometric accuracy in mind. Most work has been geared toward real-time simulations where the emphasis is on situational …

Cfd Analysis Of Flow Field In A Mixing Tank With And Without Baffles, Carlos Rezend
Theses
A computational technique has been developed to study the fluid motion in a baffled and unbaffled mixing tank. This technique was devised for a cylindrical mixing tank using a Computational Fluid Dynamics code, FIDAP. Two model analyses are presented in this thesis: Unbaffled tank steady state analysis. Baffled tank transient state analysis. The method presented in this thesis uses subroutines incorporated into the CFD program to impose the boundary conditions associated with each baffle in the tank. These boundary conditions are rebuilt for each time step to capture the effects of the relative motion between the baffles and the impeller. …
Validation Of Rochester Institute Of Technology's (Rit's) Digital Image And Remote Sensing Generation (Dirsig) Model, Reflective Region, Russell White
Validation Of Rochester Institute Of Technology's (Rit's) Digital Image And Remote Sensing Generation (Dirsig) Model, Reflective Region, Russell White
Theses
The performance of RIT's Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model is validated. The model is robust enough to treat solar, atmospheric, target/background, and sensor interactions. It operates over the 0.28 - 28 micrometers (Ultraviolet- Long Wavelength Infra-Red) spectral region. However, this study focuses only on the 0.4 - 1.0 micrometer (reflective) region. To validate the model, reference (actual) imagery from an airborne frame sensor is compared to synthetic imagery of the same scene. This study also evaluates DIRSIG's treatment of reflectivity and recommends improvements.
Boundary Scan System Design, Craig Loomis
Boundary Scan System Design, Craig Loomis
Theses
Given the strong competition in digital design on the national and international levels, boundary scan devices are rapidly becoming a necessary as opposed to a convenient feature on integrated circuits. This thesis serves a dual purpose. First, it demonstrates how boundary scan devices can be used to increase the testability of a circuit and it presents several factors used to quantify the cost associated with the addition of boundary scan compatibility to digital designs. Cost tradeoffs are often the most intimidating hurdle for engineers to cross when deciding if boundary scan compatibility is worth the effort. Second, it demonstrates the …

A Study Of Trellis Coded Quantization For Image Compression, Kannan Panchapakesan
Theses
Trellis coded quantization has recently evolved as a powerful quantization technique in the world of lossy image compression. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the potential of trellis coded quantization in conjunction with two of the most popular image transforms today; the discrete cosine transform and the discrete wavelet trans form. Trellis coded quantization is compared with traditional scalar quantization. The 4-state and the 8-state trellis coded quantizers are compared in an attempt to come up with a quantifiable difference in their performances. The use of pdf-optimized quantizers for trellis coded quantization is also studied. Results for the …

Atomic Oxygen Resitant Zirconium Containing Polyimides, Liling He
Atomic Oxygen Resitant Zirconium Containing Polyimides, Liling He
Theses
The objective of this thesis is to improve the atomic oxygen resistance of polyimide Kapton by incorporating zirconium components. Toward this end, zirconium complexes/polyimide "composites",. zirconium-containing poly(maleimide)/ polyimide "blends" and polyimide polymers with zirconium complexes as "pendants" have been investigated. Tetra(acetylacetonato)zirconium(IV), Zr(acac)4_ has been identified as the best zirconium-containing atomic oxygen resistance component for polyimide composites with good film uniformity, flexibility and tensile strength. A 24-layer 10% Zr(acac)4/PI (mol/mol) composite film shows a 20 fold improvement of atomic oxygen resistance over pure polyimide. However, a 10% by mole upper limit of Zr(acac)4 in PI was encountered, above which films become …
