Theses

This paper offers a review of the production of my thesis animation Division. In it I will describe the challenges I faced and the approaches I used to resolve them. The process was organic and all the development decisions were repeatedly studied and questioned. Consequently, this paper does not attempt to be a chronological record. Rather, the sections are intended only to organize the process into six main areas of development. The first section will focus on the development of the story, including the definition of the mood and setting. The second section will focus on the development of the …

Mother-Bereaved Women And Death Anxiety, Nicole Depriest Thompson Sep 1997

Mother-Bereaved Women And Death Anxiety, Nicole Depriest Thompson

Theses

Death anxiety in mother-bereaved women versus women non mother-bereaved was investigated. Female graduate students and social service employees were taken from a non-random sample in the Midwest. There were 60 participants, 30 who were mother-bereaved and 30 who were non mother-bereaved. Participants were given the Templer Death Anxiety Scale and a demographic survey to complete. Dependent variables were the scores on the Templer Death Anxiety Scale. There was not a statistically significant difference in average death anxiety scores between mother-bereaved women and non mother-bereaved women. The ramifications of the results are discussed, and potential avenues for further research are suggested.

The Predictive Validity Of The Bender-Gestalt Test Emotional Indicators, Jeffrey Torch Aug 1997

The Predictive Validity Of The Bender-Gestalt Test Emotional Indicators, Jeffrey Torch

Theses

Although clinical reports of the predictive validity of the Emotional Indicators (El's) of the Bender-Gestalt Test (BGT) have been presented, objective research supporting these claims have been limited. This study investigated the validity of the El's on the BGT in predicting maladaptive behaviors of 23 elementary school children referred for psychoeducational evaluation. Several of the El's were related to the behavior factors of the Devereux Elementary School Behavior Rating Scale (DESBRS). Although projective implications of some El's were supported by their regression on DESBRS factors, few strong relationships were found. Implications and suggestions for future research will be discussed.

Family Environment: Seen Through The Eyes Of Adolescents Labeled As Emotionally Disturbed, Jon Koeng

Theses

Emotionally disturbed adolescent's perceptions of their family environments were assessed using the Family Environment Scale (FES)(Moos, 1994). The sample consisted of 27 students classified as emotionally disturbed according to the New York State Part 200 guidelines for special education, ranging in age from fourteen to eighteen, and falling into five family types: two-parent intact families, step families, extended families, single parent families, and other. Results indicate that subjects differ significantly from the FES normative sample on six often variables including Cohesion, Expression, Conflict, Achievement-Orientation, Intellectual-Cultural Orientation, and Moral-Religious Orientation. Findings suggest that family relationships and personal growth could be important …

Materials For Attenuated Phase Mask Application At 193 Nm, Shahid Butt Aug 1997

Materials For Attenuated Phase Mask Application At 193 Nm, Shahid Butt

Theses

The electronic revolution is driven by the circuits and devices fabricated on silicon. Since the invention of the integrated circuit some thirty years ago the circuit complexity has increased manifold. A large portion of this increase can be attributed to the ability to print smaller features. The process of printing these small features is termed lithography. The ability to develop new lithographic techniques will determine to a large extent whether the semiconductor industry can maintain its rapid growth rate. Currently lithographic techniques that utilize 193 nm radiation are being developed to replace the 248 nm based lithographic processes. The trend …

Synthetic Image Generation Of Factory Stack And Water Cooling Tower Plumes, S. Didi Kuo Aug 1997

Synthetic Image Generation Of Factory Stack And Water Cooling Tower Plumes, S. Didi Kuo

Theses

Remote sensing of cooling tower and factory stack plumes may provide unique information on the constituents of the plume. Potential information of the power generated by the plant or the chemical composition of the factory products may be gathered from thermal emission and absorption in the infrared band, or from scattering of light in the visible band. A new model for generating synthetic images of plumes has been developed using DIRSIG, a radiometrically based ray-tracing code. Existing models that determine the characteristics of the plume (constituents, concentration, particulate sizing, and temperature) are used to construct the plume in DIRSIG. The …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Chiral Imidazolinones, Huang-Ming Philip Chen Aug 1997

Synthesis And Characterization Of Chiral Imidazolinones, Huang-Ming Philip Chen

Theses

The commercial application of imidazolinone derivatives can be found in herbicides where they inhibit acetolactate synthase (ALS; EC 4.1.3.18; also known as acetohydroxyacid synthase). The imidazolinone class of herbicides have the advantage of long term activity and low mammalian toxicity. Another application of imidazolinone derivatives is in the preparation of a-alkyl-amino acids. The objective of this investigation was to explore the asymmetric synthesis of imidazolinones through the condensation of a variety of imidate ethyl esters and ccamino acids. Furthermore, it was of interest to characterize the chiral properties of a series of imidazolinone derivatives for future investigation. In this research …

Synthesis And Charaterization Of Zirconium Complex Pendent Polymides, Huixiong Dai Aug 1997

Synthesis And Charaterization Of Zirconium Complex Pendent Polymides, Huixiong Dai

Theses

Poly(amic acid)s (PAAs) of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 4, 4'-oxydianiline (ODA), and mellitic dianhydride (MDA), PAA(PMDA-ODA-MDA), and PAAs of 4,4'- oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA), ODA, and MDA, PAA(ODPA-ODA-MDA), were synthesized by solution polycondensation with different anhydrides ratios. Their zirconium containing polyimides, which are atomic oxygen resistant materials with potential applications on the International Space Station, were prepared by introducing a mixed ligand zirconium complex (4-amino-N,N'-disalicylidene-l,2-phenylenediaminato) (N,N,-disalicylidene-l,2-phenylenediaminato)zirconium(IV), Zr(adsp)(dsp), onto the polymer chain as a pendant group. The attachment was accomplished by the nucleophilic substitution between the amino group in the complex and the anhydride carbonyl group in the polymer chain formed by the …

Design, Development, And Performance Of A Transient Heat Transfer Resistance Fouling Monitor, David Gruszczynski Aug 1997

Design, Development, And Performance Of A Transient Heat Transfer Resistance Fouling Monitor, David Gruszczynski

Theses

Fouling can be defined as the formation of deposits on heat transfer surfaces that impede heat transfer and increase the resistance to fluid flow. The presence of fouling deposits result in the loss of equipment efficiency, the loss of equipment utilization, the requirement of additional capital expenditures, and adds the cost of cleaning to a process. The cost of fouling to all industries using heat exchangers in the United States was estimated to be 2 x 10+1 dollars per year in 1995. Thus, the control or mitigation of fouling is critical to all industries which employ heat transfer equipment. In …

Development Of A Dynamic Model For A Two Stage Servovalve Amplifier Line And Orifice, David Cook Aug 1997

Development Of A Dynamic Model For A Two Stage Servovalve Amplifier Line And Orifice, David Cook

Theses

Electrohydraulic servovalves are used in a variety of industrial, military, and aerospace applications. For some of these applications the servovalve must meet stringent dynamic performance criteria while under the influence of external disturbances. The most common of these external disturbances is vibration. Vibration can not only have an affect on valve performance, but can also affect valve stability. This thesis deals with the development of a dynamic model of the amplifier lines and line orifice of a two stage servovalve. The amplifier lines are thought to affect the stability of two stage servovalves under vibration. The amplifier lines are the …

The Role Of (Alpha)S1-Casein In The Formation Of The Casein Micelle, Chinchi Chen Aug 1997

The Role Of (Alpha)S1-Casein In The Formation Of The Casein Micelle, Chinchi Chen

Theses

Caseins are the major protein components of milk. Bovine caseins have been the most thoroughly studied and serve as the principal area of research for the dairy industry. Bovine caseins are composed of several major polypeptide families, (alpha)s1-, (alpha)s1-, (beta)- and K-caseins. The (alpha)s1-caseins constitute 30.6% of bovine milk protein. The distribution of polar and apolar amino acids within each (alpha)s1 -casein molecule tends to be asymmetric, yielding protein molecules with hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains that give the caseins excellent functional properties. Moreover, the phosphoserine groups of (alpha)s1 -casein associate with calcium phosphate complexes in milk to form loosely ordered …

Lateral Guidance Control Of A Low-Speed Vehicle, Haydar Sahin Aug 1997

Lateral Guidance Control Of A Low-Speed Vehicle, Haydar Sahin

Theses

This thesis examines the lateral guidance control of a low-speed vehicle. Several topics are studied in detail: (1) vehicle error-state model for lateral guidance based on Ackerman steering and (2) lateral guidance control of a low-speed vehicle using fuzzy logic. Independently written research papers address each topic. The first paper presents a second order "error-state" kinematic model based on Ackerman steering appropriate for studying the lateral guidance control of low-speed vehicles traversing on roads of constant curvature. Lateral guidance control of vehicles is of great interest to the Advanced Vehicle Control Systems (AVCS) Division of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) …

Masks, Davya Brody Aug 1997

Masks, Davya Brody

Theses

'Masks' is a body of work which explores the concept of mask in a variety of ways. Masks have been around since prehistoric times. Their use and development has a rich visual and cultural history, "masks' draws from this history both for inspiration and for direction. The other concept of mask investigated in this body of work, is mask-as-metaphor. The word "mask" does not simply mean an object which covers one's face. It also implies blocking something out, covering something up or hiding behind something. The mask of a building, body armor, the way we want things to be seen, …
