Non-Rayleigh Ultrasonic Characterization Of Tissue Scattering Microstructure Via A Multibandwidth Probing Technique, Maria Helguera
Non-Rayleigh Ultrasonic Characterization Of Tissue Scattering Microstructure Via A Multibandwidth Probing Technique, Maria Helguera
Theses
Recent studies on the statistics of the envelope of the ultrasound echo signal from a random scattering medium suggest that the statistical moments of the signal may carry quantitative information about the scattering microstructure. A mathematical model for the backscattered signal is developed borrowing from linear systems theory and assuming narrow bandwidth conditions. Several microstructures, including sponges of different pore size as well as pig liver, human breast tissue, and human skeletal muscle, are probed experimentally with multiple bandwidth pulses with center frequency matched to the transducer center frequency. Variations of the second normalized intensity moment with the cell volume …

Dance As Medicine, Eileen D'Esterno
Dance As Medicine, Eileen D'Esterno
Theses
The purpose of this thesis project has been to express in a sculptural dimension the joy and healing qualities of movement. Movement is our primal language. The very first thing we do upon leaving the womb is to move, to reach for our mother. Movement allows us to express our feelings regardless of the ability to make sound. Infants and toddlers explore the three dimensional world as they reach out to touch, to feel, to experience textures and shapes. They gain confidence as physical beings through ever increasing skills and mobility of the body.
Multiple Document Detection With Ultrasonics, Daniel Phinney
Multiple Document Detection With Ultrasonics, Daniel Phinney
Theses
The purpose of this thesis was to develop a method to detect the occurrence of more than one document being drawn into an automatic document feeder such as is used on photocopiers and document scanners. It was desired that the method developed made no physical contact with these documents, worked with all common document materials and thicknesses. The method actually developed monitors the amplitude and phase changes in ultrasound passed through these documents. By using both the amplitude and phase of the ultrasound, a material and thickness independent method, non contact method was successfully developed.

Asynchronous Circuit Simulation And Design Methodologies, Michael Hevery
Asynchronous Circuit Simulation And Design Methodologies, Michael Hevery
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to examine asynchronous design as a possible alternative to synchronous design. Asynchronous design promises better power consumption and higher performance. In this thesis an asynchronous simulator capable of predicting asynchronous system performance is designed. The simulator is based on a probabilistic event driven model of asynchronous elements. The simulator is performance oriented only, and thus is not capable of functional simulation or verification. It provides a highly abstract view of the system. Using the simulator several design methodologies were inspected and simulated for their performance. Particular attention is paid to differences between synchronous and …
Server Selection For Mobile Agent Migration, Wayne Caro
Server Selection For Mobile Agent Migration, Wayne Caro
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to develop, test, and simulate an algorithm that mobile software agents can use to select a server to which the agents can migrate. Software agents are autonomous software entities that perform tasks on behalf of other agents or humans, and that have some degree of intelligence. In particular, a mobile software agent is capable of migrating from one computer system (agent server) to another during the course of performing its tasks. Most current implementations of mobile software agents (simply referred to as agents) have simple forms of server selection. The algorithm discussed in this …

For the past four years I have been exploring various components of my life, and relating feelings of anger, sadness, and loss through my artwork. The investigation of themes generated through an examination of my own life experiences, has led to reflection …
Paramaterized Beams As Effective Human Lip Models, Ron Dufort
Paramaterized Beams As Effective Human Lip Models, Ron Dufort
Theses
There are numerous mathematical equations used by animators and modelers to describe the curves of the human face and, specifically, the human lip. Physically-based polynomial models, b-splines, and other arbitrarily parameterized equations are used to describe facial and lip contours, though with varied degrees of complexity and resolution. This study examined the constraints and conditions necessary to utilize a standard Euler-Bernoulli beam as an effective model for the human lip. Through this analysis it was determined that general beam theories are flexible enough to create models that can generate curves comparable to actual lip shapes, though no single model studied …

Graphic Design And Architecture At Their Intersection, Kathleen Kaminski
Graphic Design And Architecture At Their Intersection, Kathleen Kaminski
Theses
This thesis will explore the increasingly important role played by graphic design in architecture. Traditionally thought of as a two-dimensional applied art, graphic design has relevant applications in the design of places. This is sometimes known as environmental graphic design. The premise of this investigation is that by extending graphic design into the world of architecture, both disciplines are strengthened. Graphic design in an architectural context benefits from a more long-lasting medium, in material and duration, than its more common forms in print, film or digital media. Architecture, in its turn, gains another way to communicate to an audience, one …

A Cruel Nature, Dylan Gottlieb
A Study Of The Relative Importance Of Plate Halftone Dot Size And Halftone Creation Method On The Reproduction Of Highlight Tonal Regions For Flexography, Jonathan Sam
Theses
The flexographic printing process has historically had difficulty printing vignettes and highlights. In comparison to offset lithography and gravure, flexography suffers from dark highlights, dirty colors, less "crispness" and an inability to print full-range vignettes. The predominant belief by the printers and manufacturers in the flexographic industry is that these difficulties arise from the excessive dot gain inherent to the process. One major cause of dot gain in flexography is believed to be the halftone dot structure on the printing plate. Many methods have been developed around modification of the traditional plate creation methods with the goal of obtaining an …
A Comparison Study Of Input Scanning Resolution Requirements For Am And Fm Screening, Kenneth Elsman
A Comparison Study Of Input Scanning Resolution Requirements For Am And Fm Screening, Kenneth Elsman
Theses
The advent of computers and their impact on the graphic arts and printing industry has, and will continue to, change the methodology of working and workflow in prepress operations. The conversion of analog materials (prints, artwork, transparencies, studio work) into a digital format requires the use of scanners or digital cameras, coupled with the knowledge of output requirements as related to client expectations. The chosen input sampling ratio (sampling rate in relation to halftone screening) impacts output quality, as well as many aspects of prepress workflow efficiency. The ability to predict printed results begins with the correct conversion of originals …

Parental Attachment And Schizophrenia: Is There A Relationship?, Madonna Marie Terbock
Theses
Although current research has studied the relationship between parental attachment and mental disorders, the results have been inconclusive. This study attempted to further previous research and focus on the relationship between parental attachment and schizophrenia in specific. The subjects consisted of two groups, adults that have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and adults that are mentally healthy. Subjects from both groups completed Parker's Parental Bonding Instrument (1979). The two groups' scores were compared in an attempt to establish a relationship between parental attachment and schizophrenia. The schizophrenic group reported significantly less care than the normal group. There was no significant difference …
