Effect Of Culturing Time And Hormonal Combinations On Organogenesis Of Date Palm (Phoenix Dactylifera L., Cv. Khnazi) In Vitro, Helal Homaid S. Al-Kaabi

Theses

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) monocotyledon dioecious tree is one of the most important fruit crop trees in the Arabian Gulf region in general and in the UAE in particular.

Date palm is propagated sexually by seeds or vegetative by offshoots. Seed propagation is not appropriate for commercial production because of the high genetic heterozygosity, which resulted in not true-to-type male and female seedlings. The vegetative propagation utilizing offshoots is slow and inefficient for rapidly growing demands of the date industry. Therefore, it seems essential to use plant tissue culture techniques for propagating and producing date palms.

Self-Similarity In A Multi-Stage Queueing Atm Switch Fabric, Adam Lange-Pearson Jun 1999

Self-Similarity In A Multi-Stage Queueing Atm Switch Fabric, Adam Lange-Pearson

Theses

Recent studies of digital network traffic have shown that arrival processes in such an environment are more accurately modeled as a statistically self-similar process, rather than as a Poisson-based one. We present a simulation of a combination sharedoutput queueing ATM switch fabric, sourced by two models of self-similar input. The effect of self-similarity on the average queue length and cell loss probability for this multi-stage queue is examined for varying load, buffer size, and internal speedup. The results using two self-similar input models, Pareto-distributed interarrival times and a Poisson-Zeta ON-OFF model, are compared with each other and with results using …

Evaluating The 1931 Cie Color Matching Functions, Mark Shaw Jun 1999

Evaluating The 1931 Cie Color Matching Functions, Mark Shaw

Theses

The use of colorimetry within industry has grown extensively in the last few decades. Central to many of today's instruments is the work of the CIE system, established in 1931. Many have questioned the validity of the assumptions made by Wright (1928-29) and Guild (1931), some suggesting that the 1931 color matching functions are not the best representation of the human visual systems' cone responses. A computational analysis was performed to evaluate the 1931 color matching functions against other responsivity functions using metameric data. The underlying principle is that an optimal set of responsivity functions will yield minimal color difference …

An Examination Of The Self-Perceptions Of The Physical Environment And Psychological Health Of Latina Women Living In The St. Columbia Neighborhood Of Newark, New Jersey, Veronica Maria Maya

Theses

A correlation between perceptions of environmental quality and psychological health has been established in a sample of Latina women. Three psychological scales exist to measure psychological constructs such as learned helplessness, hopelessness, and selfesteem. These three scales have been used in conjunction with an environmental survey designed to capture the perceptions of the sample to their physical environment.

The mean of scores for each psychological construct in the Latina sample were compared to the mean of scores for these constructs in independent samples of oncology, hemodialysis, and spinal cord injured patients being treated for depression. This comparison yields the following …

Study Of Reactive Media For Chromium Removal From Groundwater By Permeable Barriers, Hemant S. Desai May 1999

Study Of Reactive Media For Chromium Removal From Groundwater By Permeable Barriers, Hemant S. Desai

Theses

The purpose of the study was to select reduction media for application in permeable barriers for removing chromate ions from groundwater emanating from chromium refining sites in New Jersey. The high pH condition of groundwater in such sites is expected to pose limitations on the use of metallic iron (Fe0) as the sole reductive medium.

Reasonable reduction kinetics was achieved using iron at pH < 9.2. Several pH lowering media were investigated and were found to have either very slow or very fast dissolution kinetics, which rendered them impractical for use in passive permeable barriers. Two other media, namely: pyrite and siderite minerals have shown promising results, but fell short of achieving the required performance. Detailed investigation of interfacial processes in a batch reactor have shown that the addition of a small amount of a neutral salt can significantly improve chromate reduction kinetics, even at high pH conditions around 10.9.

The formation of passivating layers, which can slowdown the reaction significantly, was found to be important at high pH conditions. It is recommended that an injection system be used with the reactive barrier to …

Sustainable Green Manufacturing Of Energetic Materials, Ted Alex Formeza May 1999

Sustainable Green Manufacturing Of Energetic Materials, Ted Alex Formeza

Theses

Pollution from manufacturing processes of the major energetic materials currently used in the U.S., 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (RDX), 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7 tetraazacyclooctane (HMX) was briefly evaluated. It was found that acetic acid was a major pollutant. It appeared that the British Process could be controlled to reduce the polluting effluents better than the Bachmann Process used in the U.S. Most of the effort for producing the next generation of energetic materials is currently centered around the production of 1,3,3-trinitroazetidine (TNAZ). We evaluated five synthetic routes for producing TNAZ. We reduced the number of potential processes by carefully considering possible changes in the schemes that …

Assessing The Impact Of Design For Environment Guidelines : A Case Study Of Office Telephones, Hussam Fawzi Al-Okush May 1999

Assessing The Impact Of Design For Environment Guidelines : A Case Study Of Office Telephones, Hussam Fawzi Al-Okush

Theses

This research addresses a fundamental question: How much of the improvement in a product's environmental performance is directly attributable to the Design for Environment (DFE) tools and guidelines, and how much results simply from other design objectives or enabling technologies? The research examines four generations of a business telephone over the last thirty years, including the current generation, which has been designed using DEE guidelines. A lifecycle assessment (LCA) and demanufacturing analysis were performed on each of the first three generations to determine various technology and non-DEE trends. This information was used to forecast the progression to a 1997 non-DEE …

Design And Engineering Of A Tensile Fabric Structure, Jairo Rios May 1999

Design And Engineering Of A Tensile Fabric Structure, Jairo Rios

Theses

Fabric structures are designed in an iterative process between architect and engineer, analysis input and output, and detail and patterning. There are three main steps in designing a fabric structure: shape finding, loading, and patterning/ detailing.

Shapefinding consists of finding the shape of the fabric where the fabric forces are in equilibrium. This type of structure is geometrically nonlinear which require iterative analysis to converge on a unique solution.

The loading of the structure is similar to that of any conventional structures. The departure is in the major effects that suction and ponding have on fabric surfaces.

Usually the details …

Decision Support System For Forecasting Product And Waste Disposal Over Time, Amit P. Amte May 1999

Decision Support System For Forecasting Product And Waste Disposal Over Time, Amit P. Amte

Theses

A current barrier to the end-of-life product strategies is a lack of knowledge of the quantity and timing of product returns or waste generation. Consequently, a Decision Support System (DSS), to predict the timing and quantity of waste generation is needed. Therefore a web-based system that predicts the rate of product entering the waste-stream has been developed. The system accepts information relating to sales, reliability, storage and disposal behavior. This data is used to simulate the return waste flow. The DSS can be used to simulate the effect of different policies and to provide data for end-of-life and multi-lifecycle strategy …

History Of Oxygenated Gasoline Use In New Jersey 1992-1998, Jean Niebuhr Borne May 1999

History Of Oxygenated Gasoline Use In New Jersey 1992-1998, Jean Niebuhr Borne

Theses

New Jersey has been required to use oxygenated gasoline from November 1 to March 30 since 1992 in order to reduce carbon monoxide from vehicles. This requirement was part of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. For the past six winters, New Jersey has utilized gasoline with methyl butyl tertiary ether, MTBE, as the oxygenate. In New Jersey, and in many states across the country, health complaints were reported after oxygenated fuel started flowing from gas pumps.

Oxybusters is a grassroots organization dedicated to the removal of oxygenated gasoline off the market. The group has pressured Governor Whitman to …

Effect Of Postural Tilt On The Autonomic Nervous System In Gulf War Veterans, Shrenik Dagli May 1999

Effect Of Postural Tilt On The Autonomic Nervous System In Gulf War Veterans, Shrenik Dagli

Theses

Time-frequency signal representations characterize signals over a joint time-frequency plane. They combine time-domain and frequency-domain analysis to yield a potentially more revealing picture of the temporal localization of a signal spectrum. Time-frequency distributions (TFDS) of signals map a one-dimensional function of time, x (t), into a two-dimensional function of time and frequency, p(t, f). Most TFDs are "time-varying representations' which are similar conceptually to a musical score with time running along one axis and frequency along the other axis.

Many Gulf War Veterans complained of symptoms like unexplainable tiredness. This condition is known as the Gulf War Syndrome. The purpose …

Vibration Control Of Ultra-High Precision Magnetic Leadscrew Using Recurrent Neural Network, Bhaskar Vinayak Dani May 1999

Vibration Control Of Ultra-High Precision Magnetic Leadscrew Using Recurrent Neural Network, Bhaskar Vinayak Dani

Theses

Ultra-high precision positioning is of strategic importance to modern industrial processes such as semiconductor manufacturing. Traditional drives with mechanical transmission elements exhibit nonlinearities such as friction, backlash and hysteresis which limit the system performance significantly. The magnetic leadscrew in this work belongs to the class of contactless drives which overcome the above mentioned limitations of contact-type drives. The operation is based on leadscrew/nut coupling but unlike mechanical Ieadscrews, the threads of the nut and the leadscrew are aligned magnetically and do not come in contact. Thus, "hard" nonlinearities are substantially reduced resulting in high precision and high resolution.

The dynamics …

Theses

The objective of this thesis was to develop a new process for enhancing recovery wells at hazardous waste sites. The process, known as an extended radius well (ERW), involves injection of ceramic beads directly into groundwater plumes to create drainage paths for liquid contaminants. This is a variant of Pneumatic Fracturing, which is a patented in situ remediation process developed to increase permeability of soil and rock formations by injection of high pressure gas.

The research study comprised laboratory investigations, engineering scale tests, and a field pilot demonstration. The laboratory investigations examined the properties of several candidate media to determine …

Development Of An Ion Source For Implantation Of Decaborane, Ravidath Gurudath May 1999

Development Of An Ion Source For Implantation Of Decaborane, Ravidath Gurudath

Theses

Future generations of Si technology will require ultra shallow junctions (tens of nm) in the drain and source regions of MOS transistors. Fabrication of such shallow p-type junctions requires implantation of boron at ultra low energies (≡1keV), below the limits of standard ion implantation technology. A proposed solution involves implantation of B10HX+ ions in which boron atoms carry less than 10% of the beam energy. Thus shallow implantation may be possible with standard ion implanters operating at tens of kV.

This thesis is a part of the feasibility study of this novel technology. The ionization of …

In Situ Aortic Root In Vitro Testing Of The Stented And Stenless Porcine Aortic Heart Valves, Sean Parker May 1999

In Situ Aortic Root In Vitro Testing Of The Stented And Stenless Porcine Aortic Heart Valves, Sean Parker

Theses

Background - The stent, Delrin® support frame, for porcine heart valves has been blamed for reduced durability of these valves due to the additional stress caused by the relative stiffness of the stent. There is a tendency among surgeons to do away with the stent in the aortic position and use porcine stentless valves which are sewn directly in the aortic position after removing diseased valve. These stentless valves are extremely difficult to test and no appropriate holder has been designed for this purpose. New approach for in vitro testing of these valves has been developed at Sheihigh, Inc., Millburn …

Catalyctic Reduction Of Nitric Oxide By Copper Catalyzed Granular Activated Carbon In The Presence Of Oxygen, Shan Xiao May 1999

Catalyctic Reduction Of Nitric Oxide By Copper Catalyzed Granular Activated Carbon In The Presence Of Oxygen, Shan Xiao

Theses

The catalytic reduction of nitric oxides by solid carbonaceous material consisting primarily of granular activated carbon or (GAC) was studied in a fix bed catalytic reactor in order to develop the technology for removing NO and soot simultaneously from diesel engine exhaust. The catalytic activity and conversion of NO as a function of reaction temperature was evaluated as a function of space velocity. The results show that at lean condition and high gaseous hourly space velocity, vis., 50,000 ~ 80,000, Cu-ZSM-5 does not perform as well with CO and GAC as it does with gaseous hydrocarbons(HC). Plain GAC has low …

Recasting Cohn's Many Sorted Logic Into A Constrained Logic, Christopher Brendan Koelbl May 1999

Recasting Cohn's Many Sorted Logic Into A Constrained Logic, Christopher Brendan Koelbl

Theses

The use of a many sorted logic for theorem proving carries many advantages over a traditional unsorted logic. By placing restrictions on the search space, a many sorted logic can significantly reduce the amount steps in the resolution process. However, as a logic becomes more efficient, it increases in complexity.

One of these efficient log ics is Cohn's Many Sorted Logic, LLAMA. It uses complex data structures such as the sort lattice and sort arrays to maintain information about the sorts. Recasting LLAMA into Bürckert's constrained logic will keep the functionality of LLAMA while using a format that reduces the …
