Color Tolerance: A Comparison Of The Method Of Constant Stimuli And The Gray Scale Comaprison Method On A Crt, David Wilbur

Theses

This research compares two psychophysical methods, the method of constant stimuli and the gray scale comparison method. Three color centers were chosen: Red(L*=47.4, a*=61.90, b*=49.5), Green(L*=65.00, a*=-67.6, b*=54.60), and Gray(L*=60, a*=0.00, b*=0,00). Each color center varied in three different directions, L*, C*, and H*. Ten color difference samples were chosen for each color center in each direction, for a total of 30 different samples for the red and green color centers and 10 samples for the gray color center. Each method employed the same three color centers. The sample paris were compared with a neutral anchor pair stimulus of 1.0 …

Thermal Calibration Of Misi, Janel Schubbuck Jan 2000

Thermal Calibration Of Misi, Janel Schubbuck

Theses

MISI (Modular Imaging Spectrometer Instrument) is a sensor that takes data of the earth in the visible, near infrared and long wave infrared portions of the spectrum. One use of MISI is as an under-flight sensor that evaluates the accuracy of the thermal channels of NASA’s Landsat 7 ETM+. The hypothesis of this research stated it was possible to calibrate MISI to 0.3 K. To confirm this hypothesis, a procedure that verifies that the blackbodies track temperature correctly was employed. This specific calibration error is required in order to validate Landsat’s accuracy to 0.5 K. To observe the temperature of …

Astronomical Hyperspectral Imaging Flatfield Corrections, Katherine Hoheusle Jan 2000

Astronomical Hyperspectral Imaging Flatfield Corrections, Katherine Hoheusle

Theses

Using observations of data acquired through a tunable, liquid-crystal filter of the central region of the Jewel Box cluster, NGC4755, a tunable, liquid-crystal filter was tested to see how well low-resolution spectrophotometry of multiple stars within a moderately crowded field could be performed. To evaluate the filter, the filter’s central wavelength was stepped from 435 nanometers (nm) to 720 nm in successive intervals of 5 nm. Given the limited telescope time, the flatfield data obtained was stepped in intervals of 50 nm. Zoran Ninkov, Robert Slawson and Elliott Horch, the three RIT faculty/staff members working in the project, assumed that …

Focal Reducer/Wide-Field Corrector For The C. E. Kenneth Mees Telescope, Laurie Tuttle Jan 2000

Focal Reducer/Wide-Field Corrector For The C. E. Kenneth Mees Telescope, Laurie Tuttle

Theses

Introduction of CCD astronomical imaging has had a tremendous impact on the astrophysical community. The greatest advantage to CCD astronomical imaging is the phenomenal increase in efficiency when compared to photographic plate imaging. Images which previously required exposure times in the range of several hours can be captured in a matter of seconds using a CCD astronomical imaging system. The disadvantage to using a CCD for astronomical imaging is the loss of information capture due to the change in size of the detector area. Originally equipped with a Boller and Chivens 3" x 5" photographic plate, the Mees telescope provided …

Development Of A Linear Version Of The Ciecam97s Chromatic Adaptation Transform, Matthew Ochs Jan 2000

Development Of A Linear Version Of The Ciecam97s Chromatic Adaptation Transform, Matthew Ochs

Theses

Color appearance models are used to predict the perceived color of a source. Within these models are chromatic-adaptation transforms that predict matches only across different viewing conditions. They ignore many of the factors that are used later on in a model. This project was performed to create a simpler and easier to use chromatic-adaptation transform that was also a linear transform. This was based on the previously known CIECAM97s color appearance model and the non-linear chromatic-adaptation transform that it utilized. The research specifically attempted to create a new transform that will go from XYZ to RGB coordinates that will allow …

Derivative Spectroscopy For Remote Sensing Of Water Quality, Meghan Salmon Jan 2000

Derivative Spectroscopy For Remote Sensing Of Water Quality, Meghan Salmon

Theses

Derivative analysis of the major spectral components that combine to produce water color (water itself, chlorophyll, sediment, and organic matter) can be used to create algorithms for quantifying the water columnar constituents. The algorithms based upon this method of feature extraction will be more accurate and robust than traditional algorithms. This was done in a forward analysis manner, basing the research on the absorption spectra of the constituents. The spectral modeling completed indicates that derivative analysis can be used to estimate constituent concentration. Results indicate that the effectiveness of this method varies for different constituents. Previous work has focused on …

Rendering Multispectral Data As Useful 'Super-Visual' Images, Matthew Gypson Jan 2000

Rendering Multispectral Data As Useful 'Super-Visual' Images, Matthew Gypson

Theses

Due to the nature of mulitspectral images, it is difficult to present all available information in a single image. This study addresses the need for data compression, to enable faster and easier evaluation of a subject containing important details in a wide spectral range. The specific aim of this research is to construct algorithms to in effect compress sampled wide-band electromagnetic data into the visible range. This will present maximum image details within a final color image. The developed compression scheme aims to achieve the high efficiency while keeping the best quality of image subjects. Ancient documents (from the Dead …

A Search For Binary Stars Using Speckle Interferometry, Matthew Hoffmann Jan 2000

A Search For Binary Stars Using Speckle Interferometry, Matthew Hoffmann

Theses

Fifteen suspected double stars from the Hipparcos satellite are analyzed to find new binary stars. The measures are derived from speckle observations taken with the Wisconsin-Indiana-Yale-NOAO (WIYN) 3.5 meter telescope located at Kitt Peak, Arizona. My research project was based on my Hypothesis: Speckle Interferometry allowed for diffraction-limited images to be captured by the WIYN telescope. Analysis of the speckle data from the WIYN allowed for the detection of the orbital motion of gravitationally bound binary stars and the detection of new double stars. Data from the WIYN telescope was taken using a low noise fast readout CCD array, which …

X-Rays From Orion: Identification And Cross Correlations Of Young Stars In The Orion Nebula, Erik Bergstrom Jan 2000

X-Rays From Orion: Identification And Cross Correlations Of Young Stars In The Orion Nebula, Erik Bergstrom

Theses

Recently formed, sun-like stars frequently display large x-ray luminosities. Therefore, x-ray observations provide a powerful means to identify newly formed stars, for the first time. The high spatial resolution of The Chandra X-ray Observatory has given us the ability to identify many stars seen in the x-ray wavelength regime for the first time also. The Orion Nebula is a very well studied region of star formation, and therefore is a good place for initial observations with Chandra. We have analyzed Chandra imaging observations of The Orion Nebula for the purposes of source detection and source identification. The visualizations of the …

Better Astronomical Images By Selecting "Moments Of Good Seeing" In Captured Video, James Chauvin Jan 2000

Better Astronomical Images By Selecting "Moments Of Good Seeing" In Captured Video, James Chauvin

Theses

This research project attempted to create software by which images of astronomical objects, captured through land based telescopes could, be enhanced to reduce the effects of the earth's turbulent atmosphere. Typically astronomical images are enhanced by registering, shifting and co-adding captured images of an object of interest. Our approach is similar in that co-adding is also utilized, however we take the typical procedure a step further. Our hypothesis is that by selecting certain images from the captured group, via the application of a simple quality metric, the output of the co-adding process will yield a higher quality image than by …

Automatic Optical Matched Filtering An Evaluation Of Reflexite And Transitions Lenses In An Optical Matched Filtering Role, Timothy Hattenberger

Theses

A matched filter is a device used to detect the presence and position of known objects in a scene. The ability to create an optical matched filter has been around for many years. The current filters have some aspects that are troublesome. The problems encountered by these filters include quantization error, and complexity in generating the matched filters. The optical matched filter being studied eliminates these problems in an attempt to generate a better filter. There are also other potential implications of this research. One can envision such a system being used for real-time target detection. The primary advantage over …

The Death Of Privacy, Darren W. Bax Jan 2000

The Death Of Privacy, Darren W. Bax

Theses

This thesis will focus on the issue of personal privacy and the growing threat to its existence in a technological society.

The areas most associated with privacy loss include increased government intrusions, legislation, workplace, healthcare industry, Internet, and identity theft. Chapter one provides a historical perspective beginning with primitive culture and their struggle to maintain privacy in the lives. Interesting enough, privacy protection was not mentioned by the judicial system until 1880 when privacy was defined as the "right to be left alone." To address concerns about privacy reform the Supreme Court cited this right of privacy as having " …

Evolutionary Algorithms For Solving Large Time Dependent Traveling Salesman Problems, Leonard J. Testa Jan 2000

Evolutionary Algorithms For Solving Large Time Dependent Traveling Salesman Problems, Leonard J. Testa

Theses

This thesis presents an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to efficiently solve large instances of the time dependent travelling salesman problem (TDTSP). In this approach, the path the salesman must follow is structured as an ordered list of cities. The path may optionally have two kinds of constraints. Precedence constraints specify that a specific city must be visited before another specific city. "Time windows" specify the time at which specific cities must be visited. This work demonstrate that EAs are more effective than traditional methods, such as linear or dynamic programming, for solving general TDTSPs of up to 50 cities. This thesis …

Tactile Hazardous Material Information System (Thmis), Alejandro Ruiz Jan 2000

Tactile Hazardous Material Information System (Thmis), Alejandro Ruiz

Theses

In today's work environment, many dangers exist around that can harm workers who are not aware of the hazards in their environment. If these workers happen to be visually impaired, then identifying those hazards with the present labeling systems would be difficult. The Hazardous Material Information System (HMIS) was chosen to be adapted with tactile patterns and numbers. The tactile patterns and numbers would not change the layout and intent of the HMIS, but enhance its effectiveness.

Five tactile patterns and five tactile numbers were designed to be recognizable and simple. The patterns and numbers were tested and observed to …

The rubble from the demolished housing was transported to Campo del Rastrello and used as fill for a new stadium. The process continued with the replacement of the original housing …

Project Iris: Image Reconstruction Of The Iris Spectrally, Joseph Unander Jan 2000

Project Iris: Image Reconstruction Of The Iris Spectrally, Joseph Unander

Theses

The basic motivation behind this project is a highly accurate representation of the human iris, to be injected into a virtual model of the human eyeball. A highly accurate brightness level recording can be easily obtained with a high quality digital camera. Color, however, is an entirely different matter. Photography in the traditional sense entertains all sorts of color inaccuracies, mostly related to the chemical process of development. Digital photography presents gamma and metameric problems, since the exact conditions of the capturing event cannot easily be duplicated. However, the spectral radiance of an object can be captured, utilizing a spectrophotometer …

Security In Distributed Systems - A Framework For Different Application Types, Ingo Stengel Jan 2000

Security In Distributed Systems - A Framework For Different Application Types, Ingo Stengel

Theses

Security is a factor which decides upon the applicability of distributed applications. Therefore this thesis deals with security in distributed systems. The complexity of the existing distributed technologies makes it necessary to reduce the number of distributed technologies considered in this thesis, i.e. concentrating on: Java, Mobile Agents and CORBA, where only Java-based mobile agents will be considered.

After a short review of basic security principles including firewalls, existing security problems in the above mentioned distributed technologies are analysed. Additional generic problems in distributed systems are outlined.

Solutions are referring to two different areas: those regarding security problems with firewalls …

The Management, Growth, And Development Of The Suzuki Method Of String Pedagogy At Cork School Of Music From 1969-1999, Patricia Mccarthy

Theses

The Suzuki method of string playing was introduced to Ireland, and indeed to Europe, by the Cork School of Music in 1969.

This study examines the way the method was ' discovered' in Cork, the reasons why it was introduced, how it was misunderstood in the beginning and how, through careful management and by staff development it changed and developed into the successful programme it is today.

Through empirical research I have conducted a detailed investigation into the way in which the programme was managed from its earliest introduction.

Chapter 1 explains what the method is and how it operates. …

Effects Of Father-Absence On Male Sex Role, Terri L. Portrell Jan 2000

Effects Of Father-Absence On Male Sex Role, Terri L. Portrell

Theses

This study explored the effects that the presence or absence of a father living in the household has on the sex-role development of male children. With an increasing number of males being reared in fatherless, mother-headed families, it is important to understand this phenomenon. Seventy-two male college students, ages 18 to 25, were subjects. Thirty-six were raised in father-present households, while thirty-six were raised in father-absent, mother-headed households. The Bern Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) was employed to assess each subject's sex-role. Past research suggests that males reared without fathers in the home develop a less masculine sex-role orientation and are far …
