Parametric Modeling Of Tooling: Workpiece Interaction With Engineered Abrasives, Hitesh Kataria Nov 2003

Parametric Modeling Of Tooling: Workpiece Interaction With Engineered Abrasives, Hitesh Kataria

Theses

Abrasive processes are some of the most important operations employed in manufacturing to remove unwanted material and introduce desired geometry and surface finish. However, some of the difficulties encountered when trying to model abrasive process are related to a multi-point of contact tooling composed of extremely hard and brittle particles which geometry, shape and distribution are unknown. With the introduction of engineered abrasives to the market over the past few years, the opportunity to drastically improve the quality and consistency of abrasive machining now exists. One of the main benefits of engineered abrasives is the ability to control the abrasive …

An Automated Procedure For Simulating Complex Arrival Processes: A Web-Based Approach, Sachin Sumant Nov 2003

An Automated Procedure For Simulating Complex Arrival Processes: A Web-Based Approach, Sachin Sumant

Theses

In industry, simulation is one of the most widely used probabilistic modeling tools for modeling highly complex systems. Major sources of complexity include the inputs that drive the logic of the model. Effective simulation input modeling requires the use of accurate and efficient input modeling procedures. This research focuses on nonstationary arrival processes. The fundamental stochastic model on which this study is conducted is the nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) which has successfully been used to characterize arrival processes where the arrival rate changes over time. Although a number of methods exist for modeling the rate and mean value functions that …

Twixt, Karen Schlesinger Nov 2003

Twixt, Karen Schlesinger

Theses

This thesis discusses photographs exhibited at the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences Gallery at Rochester Institute of Technology from April 28 - May 10, 2003. In these photographs of desecrated landscapes at liminal times of day, the eerie light and vibrant colors of dusk and dawn enable me to create views of my personal world, a foreign and perilous place for some audiences, an intoxicating and disquieting environment for others. As the light gives way to darkness, the deepening shadows of the vegetation come alive as monstrous figures. Fears lurk in the darkness and become threatening creatures of the …

Neutron Radiography Study Of Water Transport In An Operating Fuel Cell: Effects Of Diffusion Media And Cathode Channel Properties, Jon Owejan

Theses

In a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, effective water management is required for optimal cell performance. While membrane hydration is needed for effective proton conduction, an excess of water, particularly on the cathode side, hinders transport of oxygen to the catalyst sites and lowers cell voltage. This study utilized neutron radiography to reveal the presence of liquid water while operating the PEMFC. These insitu experiments investigated both rectangular and triangular flow field geometries, various flow field surface energies, and several gas diffusion media samples. Correlations were drawn between accumulated water mass and performance data collected during the imaging process. The …

Identification And Prediction Of Nonlinear Dynamics, Andrew Dick Oct 2003

Identification And Prediction Of Nonlinear Dynamics, Andrew Dick

Theses

Chaos theory and associated analyses are being applied to a growing number of disciplines. Studies of biological and ecological systems have shown the widest application of chaotic analyses thus far. When studying these systems, it is often only possible to measure a subset of the system's many variables. To effectively perform a number of the analyses required to study a chaotic system, it is necessary to identify a complete strange attractor for the system. Consequently, it is necessary to reconstruct the system's strange attractor from the available data. Many different methods exist for reconstructing strange attractors, but the effectiveness of …

Seeing, Sensing, And Selection: Modeling Visual Perception In Complex Environments, Roxanne Canosa

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate human visual perception at the level of eye movements by describing the interaction between vision and action during natural, everyday tasks in a real-world environment. The results of the investigation provide motivation for the development of a biologically-based model of selective visual perception that relies on the relative perceptual conspicuity of certain regions within the field of view. Several experiments were designed and conducted that form the basis for the model. The experiments provide evidence that the visual system is not passive, nor is it general-purpose, but rather it is active and …

Experimental Study Of Heat Transfer, Pressure Drop, And Critical Heat Flux In An Oil Heated Minichannel, Levi Campbell

Theses

Heat transfer, pressure drop, and critical heat flux are experimentally recorded for flowing water in a single 706 pm circular copper channel 158.75 mm long. Heat is supplied by heat transfer oil at specified temperatures to a helical channel in the test section. In contrast to other current experimental techniques for flow boiling in small diameter tubes, a uniform temperature boundary condition is employed rather than a constant heat flux condition. The principal results of these experiments are two-phase flow boiling heat transfer rates, a comparison of two data acquisition methods and their effect on the value of CHF, and …

Transport Properties Of Nc-Si / A-Sio2 Superlattices And Their Applications In Non-Volatile Memory, Lakshmi Susmitha Koneru

Theses

The dc current-voltage characteristics, ac conductivity, equivalent capacitance, photocurrent transients of the n-Si/nanocrystalline-Si/amorphous-SiO2/Al heterostructure were measured in a wide range of illumination intensities for temperatures from 4.2 K to 300 K. Electrical transport properties of the nanocrystalline-Si/amorphous-SiO2 superlattices were discussed. The observed domination of the electron component at negative bias and of the hole component at positive bias above 0.7 V in a dc current allows to separate transport features of electrons and holes in a nc-Si/a-SiO2 superlattices. Transport of electrons is thermally activated if potential barrier at c-Si/SL interface of 70 meV is suppressed and …

Elastic Brain Image Registration Using Mutual Information, Srisheela Devabhaktuni Aug 2003

Elastic Brain Image Registration Using Mutual Information, Srisheela Devabhaktuni

Theses

Image Registration is the determination of a geometrical transformation that aligns points in one image of an object with corresponding points in another image. The source image is geometrically transformed to match the target image. The geometric transformation can be rigid or non-rigid. Rigid transformations preserve straight lines and angles between straight lines. The basic rigid transformations are rotation, scaling and translation.

In this thesis non-rigid registration using B-splines is the method being used to take into account the elastic change in the brain structure. The B-spline equation is a type of curved transformation that does not preserve the straightness …

A Combined Channel-Modified Adaptive Array Mmse Canceller And Viterbi Equalizer, Richard M. Friedman Aug 2003

A Combined Channel-Modified Adaptive Array Mmse Canceller And Viterbi Equalizer, Richard M. Friedman

Theses

In this thesis, a very simple scheme is proposed which couples a maximum-likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) with a X-element canceller. The method makes use of the MLSE's channel estimator to modify the locally generated training sequence used to calculate the antenna array weights. This method will increase the array's degree of freedom for interference cancellation by allowing the dispersive, desired signal to pass through the array undisturbed. Temporal equalization of the desired signal is then accomplished using maximum-likelihood sequence estimation. The T-spaced channel estimator coefficients and the array weights are obtained simultaneously using the minimum mean square error criteria. The …

Theses

A signature database is the key component of an elaborate intrusion detection system. The efficiency of signature generation for an intrusion detection system is a crucial requirement because of the rapid appearance of new attacks on the World Wide Web. However, in the commercial applications, signature generation is still a manual process, which requires professional skills and heavy human effort. Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining methods may be a solution to this problem. Data Mining and Machine Learning algorithms can be applied to the network traffic databases, in order to automatically generate signatures.

The purpose of this thesis and the …

Two groups of patients were studied, those that were mildly hypertensive (but are not taking prescription medication for hypertension) and the control or normal group. The two groups exercised on a bicycle ergometer. Work rate was increased in steps (multiples of thirty watts) until anaerobic threshold (as measured by an ear oximeter) was reached. Heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production were measured during exercise. Their data …

Tree Based Reliable Topology For Distributing Link State Information, Ram Narayan Krishnan Aug 2003

Tree Based Reliable Topology For Distributing Link State Information, Ram Narayan Krishnan

Theses

Finding paths that satisfy the performance requirements of applications according to link state information in a network is known as the Quality-of- Service (QoS) routing problem and has been extensively studied. However, distributing link state information may introduce a significant protocol overhead on network resources. In this thesis, the issue on how to update link state information efficiently and effectively is investigated. A theoretical framework is presented, and a high performance link state policy that is capable of minimizing the false blocking probability of connections under a given update rate constraint is proposed. Through theoretical analysis, it is shown that …

Face Recognition Using Principal Component Analysis, Timothy Kevin Larkin Aug 2003

Face Recognition Using Principal Component Analysis, Timothy Kevin Larkin

Theses

Current methods of face recognition use linear methods to extract features. This causes potentially valuable nonlinear features to be lost. Using a kernel to extract nonlinear features should lead to better feature extraction and, therefore, lower error rates. Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA) will be used as the method for nonlinear feature extraction. KPCA will be compared with well known linear methods such as correlation, Eigenfaces, and Fisherfaces.

Service Differentiation In Multihop Wireless Packet Networks, Ilker Onat Aug 2003

Service Differentiation In Multihop Wireless Packet Networks, Ilker Onat

Theses

This work explores the potential of link layer scheduling combined with MAC layer prioritization for providing service differentiation in multihop wireless packet networks. As a result of limited power, multihop characteristic and mobility, packet loss ratio in wireless ad hoc networks tends to be high compared to wireline and one-hop mobile data networks. Therefore, for wireless ad hoc networks, DiffServ-like distributed service differentiation schemes are more viable than hard QoS solutions, which are mainly designed for wireline networks. The choice and implementation of proper queuing and scheduling methods, which determine how packets will use the channel when bandwidth becomes available, …
