Assessment Of Surface Water Runoff And Groundwater Recharge Using Mathematical Models, Khaled Omer Mohamed Haroon Jun 2004

Assessment Of Surface Water Runoff And Groundwater Recharge Using Mathematical Models, Khaled Omer Mohamed Haroon

Theses

In arid and semi-arid regions, surface water resources are scarce and, in most cases, groundwater is the only natural resource of freshwater. Pumping of groundwater often exceeds natural recharge. Therefore, groundwater levels are declining and its quality is deteriorating. Sustainable management of groundwater is thus a key issue and requires implementation of appropriate technologies to augment groundwater resources. Artificial recharge augments the natural movement of surface water into the underground formations using some means of construction whereby surface water from streams or lakes is made to infiltrate into the ground.

The UAE is known by its arid conditions and limited …

The Computer-Aided Design Of Nano-Scaled Digital Circuits, Frank Alva Krueger Jun 2004

The Computer-Aided Design Of Nano-Scaled Digital Circuits, Frank Alva Krueger

Theses

The use of CMOS-based transistors to implement digital logic is the prevalent means of modern computation. It is, however, not the only means. Advances in nano-science and engineering demonstrate that nano-scale integrated circuits are in fact a viable technology for computation. The dominant means for information propagation in these devices is quantum tunneling - a phenomenon that is not wholly compatible with current design techniques. This paper is an explanation of one process used to both design and simulate digital logic circuits utilizing the topology of the hypercube. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the ease of designing …

Measurement Of The Effectiveness Of Enhanced External Counterpulsation On Heart Rate Variability For Patients With Myocardial Ischemia, Kripa Jayaraman May 2004

Measurement Of The Effectiveness Of Enhanced External Counterpulsation On Heart Rate Variability For Patients With Myocardial Ischemia, Kripa Jayaraman

Theses

This thesis is a study to measure the changes in heart rate variability due to the activity of the autonomic nervous system caused by the Enhanced External Counterpulsation treatment. The treatment is a non surgical, mechanical procedure that can reduce the symptoms of angina or Congestive Heart Failure, presumably by stimulating the opening, or formation of, small branches of blood vessels (collaterals) to create a natural bypass around narrowed or blocked arteries. It has been proved that rhythms can be markers of normal functional states. Even in the absence of external perturbations, the normal heartbeat is not characterized by clockwise …

Parametric Synthesis Of Sign Language, Jerome Allen May 2004

Parametric Synthesis Of Sign Language, Jerome Allen

Theses

The isolation of the deaf community from mainstream society is in part due to the lack of knowledge most hearing people have of sign language. To most, there seems to be little need to learn a language that is spoken by such a small minority unless perhaps a relative is unable to hear. Even with a desire to learn, the task may seem insurmountable due to the unique formational and grammatical rules of the language.

This linguistic rift has led to the call for an automatic translation system with the ability to take voice or written text as input and …

Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Human Motion Using 3-Dimensional, Multi-Segment Coupled Pendulum System : Derivation Of A Generalized Formula For Equations Of Motion, Loay Ahmed-Wasfe Al-Zube May 2004

Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Human Motion Using 3-Dimensional, Multi-Segment Coupled Pendulum System : Derivation Of A Generalized Formula For Equations Of Motion, Loay Ahmed-Wasfe Al-Zube

Theses

The use of mathematical models to investigate the dynamics of human movement relies on two approaches: forward dynamics and inverse dynamics. In this investigation a new modeling approach called the Boundary Method is outlined. This method addresses some of the disadvantages of both the forward and the inverse approach. The method yields as output both a set of potential movement solutions to a given motor task and the net muscular impulses required to produce those movements. The input to the boundary method is a finite and adjustable number of critical target body configurations. In each phase of the motion that …

Application Of Bootstrap Resampling In Fmri, Arthika Bappal May 2004

Application Of Bootstrap Resampling In Fmri, Arthika Bappal

Theses

This thesis demonstrates the use of the bootstrap resampling technique considering temporal dependency in the fMRI data to determine the reliability and confidence interval of fMRI parameters. Traditionally, the test-retest method has been used to reliably detect active voxels in the fMRI image of the brain, which is based on repetitive experimentation. The main concern with the test-retest method is the reproducibility of data over these multiple repetitions. Fatigue, habituation, motion artifacts, and repositioning errors are few of the factors, which can affect the reproducibility of data.

The conventional bootstrap resampling technique is based on the assumption that the dataset …

Systems Integration With Dlsi, Tarun Preet S. Bedi May 2004

Systems Integration With Dlsi, Tarun Preet S. Bedi

Theses

Systems integration aims to provide a homogenous view to a system consisting of many heterogeneous systems. Systems integration can be achieved by many means out of which the middleware approach is the most popular. This is because middleware can be built around existing systems thereby reducing the amount of changes needed for the integration. Nowadays many middleware technologies are available to integrate heterogeneous systems. One can chose among them depending upon the requirements. But due to the many technologies available for Middleware, a muddle of middleware exists. To reduce this muddle and to integrate the systems already implemented using different …

Incineration And Environmental Justice : The Case Of Communities Around Connecticut Resource Recovery Facilities, Michael A. Bilheimer May 2004

Incineration And Environmental Justice : The Case Of Communities Around Connecticut Resource Recovery Facilities, Michael A. Bilheimer

Theses

The current depleting landfill capacity in Connecticut means that resource recovery facilities will be relied on heavily to meet the States' waste disposal needs. This heavy reliance on these facilities will place greater burdens on the host communities of these waste facilities. Therefore it is important to examine the citing of these facilities to determine if these sitings unfairly targeted a particular segment of the population.

To determine if siting has been unjust in Connecticut, this study uses a geographic information system (GIS) to analyze demographic data surrounding each facility in a comparison of demographic data from 1990 and 2000 …

A Statistical Ultra Wideband Indoor Channel Model And The Effects Of Antenna Directivity On Multipath Delay Spread And Path Loss In Ultra Wideband Indoor Channels, Jason Anthony Dabin

Theses

Ultra-wideband (UWB) indoor frequency domain channel measurements have been performed in the 2 GHz to 6 GHz frequency band using three different transmitter/receiver (Tx/Rx) antenna combination pairs. The effects of antenna directivity on path loss and multipath propagation in the channel were analyzed extensively for various omni-directional and directional antenna combinations. A statistical model of the path loss in the channel is presented, where the parameters in the model (i.e., path loss exponent and shadow fading statistics) are dependent on the particular Tx/Rx antenna combination. Time domain statistics of the channel (i.e., mean delay spread and RMS delay spread) are …

Review Of Algorithms For Rna Secondary Structure Prediction With Pseudoknots, Ingrid Helene Nielsen May 2004

Review Of Algorithms For Rna Secondary Structure Prediction With Pseudoknots, Ingrid Helene Nielsen

Theses

Pseudoknots are structures that are formed from the base pairing of an RNA secondary loop structure with a complementary base which lies somewhere outside of the loop. The result is a structure, which plays a vital role in cell structure rigidity, regulation of protein synthesis, and in the structural organization of RNA complexes. Deciphering RNA folding patterns would begin to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding the cell and its functions and open a new world to scientists. Many algorithms have been written in this quest to predict RNA's secondary structure but not many have been very successful.

In this …

An Investigation Of Position And Force During Gait-Mimicking Finger Motions, Matthew Stephen Noesner May 2004

An Investigation Of Position And Force During Gait-Mimicking Finger Motions, Matthew Stephen Noesner

Theses

Spinal cord injuries are extremely debilitating, often leaving the injured person without the ability to use their legs (paraplegia) and sometimes, without the ability to use their arms and legs (tetraplegia or quadriplegia). Currently, primitive forms of feed-forward functional electrical stimulation (FES) and special orthotics are available for persons with paraplegia. However, these forms of FES do not allow the individual to actually control their movements on a real-time basis, nor do they offer the ability for the injured person to sense the ground on which they stand.

It is the goal of the researchers at the Neuromuscular Engineering Laboratory, …

Si-Sio2 Interface Behavior In N-Mosfets With Screening Potential During High-Field Injection, Purushothaman Srinivasan May 2004

Si-Sio2 Interface Behavior In N-Mosfets With Screening Potential During High-Field Injection, Purushothaman Srinivasan

Theses

This work investigates the screening of hot carrier stress degradation in n-channel MOSFETs when the devices were exposed to plasma processing. Devices with various antenna ratios were subjected to current stress (both gate injection and substrate injection) while the source and drain terminals were reverse biased by a screening potential followed by hot carrier stress. It was observed that screening of the drain edge was effective for both gate injection and substrate injection at different screening potentials. The hot carrier lifetime is directly related to interface state density (Dit), measured by charge pumping method. The results suggest that hot electron …
