Women In The Printing Industry: The Challenges Of Women Press Operators, Margaret Przelski
Women In The Printing Industry: The Challenges Of Women Press Operators, Margaret Przelski
Theses
There appear to be very few women press operators in the printing industry. Unfortunately, the reasons for this situation are not clearly understood. To investigate this phenomenon, three different questionnaires were administered to the following groups:
-
human resource managers selected from the top local Rochester commercial printing companies listed in the Rochester Business Journal,
-
alumni from RIT's School of Print Media, and
-
women with press operation experience.
The main purpose of the first survey was to determine how many women were actually employed as press operators in Rochester, New York. If women weren't working as press operators, what positions did …

In this research, the effect of solvent types and pigment types on C-type ester-based gravure inks were studied. Three of the widely used solvent types and two of the pigment types were used in this study. The characteristics of the modified inks were investigated by measuring the most important physical properties of the inks: (i) surface energy, (ii) contact angle, (iii) viscosity and (iv) substrate adhesion. The experiment results showed that the ink properties changed significantly depending on the solvent type, while pigment type variation had a negligible effect on the ink properties. From this experiment, the most improved properties …
The Implementation Of Homeland Security Efforts In Response Organizations: Monroe County, New York Case Study, Heather M. Savage
The Implementation Of Homeland Security Efforts In Response Organizations: Monroe County, New York Case Study, Heather M. Savage
Theses
The events from 9/11 have prompted many changes in American society. Perhaps the biggest change can be seen in the Emergency Response field. The initial response to the events of 9/11 was a huge push at readying responders for future attacks. However, it can now be seen throughout the response community that the initial emphasis on terrorism readiness has turned into complacency and that the goal of fully preparing each responder has not yet been attained. There are many factors preventing the physical and mental preparation of each Emergency Responder and these factors range from lack of funding to lack …
An Experimental Investigation Into The Effect Of Surfactants On Air-Water Two-Phase Flow In Minichannels, Nathan J. English
An Experimental Investigation Into The Effect Of Surfactants On Air-Water Two-Phase Flow In Minichannels, Nathan J. English
Theses
The complex interfacial phenomena involved in two-phase gas-liquid flow have defied mathematical simplification and modeling. However, the systems are used in heat exchangers, condensers, chemical processing plants, and nuclear reactor systems. The present work considers a 1 mm square minichannel and adiabatic flows corresponding to practical PEM fuel cell conditions. Pressure drop data is collected in experimentation covering mass fluxes of 4.0-33.6 kg/m2s, which correspond to superficial gas and liquid velocities of 3.4-10 m/s and 0.001-0.02 m/s respectively. The experiments are repeated with water of reduced surface tension, caused by the addition of surfactant, in order to quantify the surface …
Hardware And Software Multi-Precision Implementations Of Cryptographic Algorithms, Muhammad A. Janjua
Hardware And Software Multi-Precision Implementations Of Cryptographic Algorithms, Muhammad A. Janjua
Theses
The software implementations of cryptographic algorithms are considered to be very slow, when there are requirements of multi-precision arithmetic operations on very long integers. These arithmetic operations may include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and exponentiation. Several research papers have been published providing different solutions to make these operations faster. Digital Signature Algorithm (DSA) is a cryptographic application that requires multi-precision arithmetic operations. These arithmetic operations are mostly based upon modular multiplication and exponentiation on integers of the size of 1024 bits. The use of such numbers is an essential part of providing high security against the cryptanalytic attacks on the …

What is art? What is good art? Who are considered Artists, and why? Most important, can the very process by which we go through every day in our lives lead to an acceptable form of art-making? Furthermore, can life, my life, be put into a visual format to be viewed from outside of my life? Over the last two years I have been working with words as images, with a concept of installation as dialogue between the space, the artist, and the viewer. In my recently completed thesis show the work dealt with both the challenge of “writing a picture”, …
Adhesion Of Copper To Poly(Tetrafluoroethylene) And Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene Copolymer Surfaces Modified With Vacuum Uv Radiation From Helium Arc Plasma, Zheng Sun
Theses
Teflon materials including poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) and poly (tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (FEP) were exposed to vacuum UV (VUV) radiation from a He DC arc plasma that was made to rotate inside of a graphite tube by the application of an auxiliary magnetic field. The polymer films were covered with optical filters having different cut-off wavelengths to vary the spectrum of the VUV radiation that modified the fluoropolymer surface. The properties of the surface changed after surface modification as follows: (1) water contact angles started to decrease in the wavelength region between 173 and 160 nm and continued to decrease with shorter wavelengths; (2) …

Utilizing Neural Networks To Proactively Monitor Energy Usage In City Of Rochester Buildings, Brian J. Gillis
Theses
Energy usage within buildings in the United States is a very important topic because of the current price of natural gas, steam, and electricity and the ever-increasing depletion of fossil fuels. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully analyze building energy consumption. Currently, there are several methods used for analyzing a solitary building's energy usage. One method involves the use of a neural network (NN) model. The current use of NN for building energy prediction typically requires the collection of hourly energy usage data from a single building using data loggers during several different seasons and occupancy levels in order to …
Application Of Phenology To Assist In Hyperspectral Species Classification Of A Northern Hardwood Forest, Gretchen Sprehe
Application Of Phenology To Assist In Hyperspectral Species Classification Of A Northern Hardwood Forest, Gretchen Sprehe
Theses
Tree species have unique spectral reflectance patterns that allows them to be both compared to other objects and to other types of trees. Increasing the spectral separation of such images may assist with surveying and forestry inventories. In past studies, most classifications were done with summer leaves, which darken and become very similar shades of green. This study utilized the phenology of trees to investigate how the changing colors of young or senescing leaves may assist in species classification based on aerial images. Images were taken of the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is mainly dominated by sugar maple (Acer …

Al2o3 Hosted Attenuated Phase Shift Mask Materials For 157 Nm, Yang Liu
Al2o3 Hosted Attenuated Phase Shift Mask Materials For 157 Nm, Yang Liu
Theses
The Semiconductor Industry Association Roadmap 2003 has put 157 nm optical lithography as the next generation lithography wavelength for the node of 70 nm integrated circuits and below. The small departure from 193 nm puts more challenge on imaging tools and processes. One of the crucial areas is the exploration of thin film optical materials for mask coatings at vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) wavelength. Attenuated Phase Shift Mask (APSM) is one of the optical enhancement technologies pushing critical dimension of lithography to diffraction limits. As no existing single material satisfies those demanding requirements of APSM, non-stoichiometric composite materials will be explored …

Operating, Testing And Evaluating Hybridized Silicon P-I-N Arrays, Andrew C. Moore
Operating, Testing And Evaluating Hybridized Silicon P-I-N Arrays, Andrew C. Moore
Theses
Use of CCD detector arrays as visible imagers in space telescopes has been problematic. Charge-coupled devices rapidly deteriorate due to damage from the high radiation environment of space. CMOS-based imagers, which do not transfer charge, offer an alternative technology that is more tolerant of a high-radiation environment.
This dissertation evaluates the performance of four "pathfinder" 1K by 1K hybridized silicon P-I-N detector arrays made by Raytheon under subcontract to RIT as candidates for use in a space telescope application. Silicon P-I-N arrays have photon capture properties similar to back-thinned CCD's and should be far more robust than CCD's in the …

Free Vibration Of Sandwich Plates With Viscoelastic Cores, Devlin Hayduke
Free Vibration Of Sandwich Plates With Viscoelastic Cores, Devlin Hayduke
Theses
The analysis of the free vibration of rectangular sandwich plates with viscoelastic cores is purposed. The analysis focuses on evaluating two displacement theories of sandwich plates for various geometric and material properties and boundary conditions. The first theory was developed for the vibratory bending of unsymmetrical sandwich plates by Rao and Nakra1. The theory is a layerwise theory that models the displacement of the face layers with classic plate theory (i.e. normals to the midplane remain normal to the midplane and undeformed after deformation of the plate) and the continuity of the displacements at the interfaces between the face layers …
Feasability Of Printing Rfid Antennas On Corrugated Paperboard, Juthamart Sayampol
Feasability Of Printing Rfid Antennas On Corrugated Paperboard, Juthamart Sayampol
Theses
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a trace-and-track technology using RF signals for communication. RFID system was expected to replace barcodes and magnetic stripes because of its extra benefits for the supply chain: multiple items tracking and operation without line-of-sight. A major limitation of RFID technology was the cost of implementation. Since the existing method for RFID applications - "Slap and Ship" - was costly and time-and-labor consuming, this study was aimed to investigate whether the new method - printed-RFID-antenna - could be used in corrugated packaging industry for cost reduction purpose, and also whether those printed antennas could function under …
