Development Of A Porous Silicon Flow-Through Field Effect Sensing System For Chemical And Biological Detection, Jeffrey Clarkson Jan 2005

Development Of A Porous Silicon Flow-Through Field Effect Sensing System For Chemical And Biological Detection, Jeffrey Clarkson

Theses

With an increasing need for homeland security, and breakthrough advancements in sensing applications, the demand for highly sensitive, compact, biological and chemical sensing devices is evident. Macroporous silicon (MPS) is an ideal material for meeting these demands because it exhibits a large degree of internal surface area and is fully compatible with silicon technologies. Since the surface is sensitive to charged molecules, localized field effects from analytes interfaced with MPS will cause modulation of a space charge region in the semiconductor. In this work, a porous silicon based sensing system is designed, fabricated, and characterized. The unique properties of porous …

Characterization Of The Class I Major Histocompatibility Complex Of The Macaca Fascicularis, Gregory Matuszek

Theses

In an attempt to establish Macaca fascicularis as a viable animal model for disease studies, characterization of the MHC class I genes is necessary. The necessity arises because the MHC class I molecules have a functional role in immune response. Pig-tailed macaques Macaca nemestrina) and rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), two species closely related to Macaca fascicularis have been commonly used to model HIV infection and are well characterized in regards to their MHC class I molecules. As an initial step in establishing M. fascicularis as an animal model, we have cloned and characterized both classical and nonclassical MHC class I …

M2mi Service Discovery Middleware Framework, Joel Donado Jan 2005

M2mi Service Discovery Middleware Framework, Joel Donado

Theses

M2MI has been thought of as a paradigm for applications running on ad hoc networks of fixed and mobile wireless proximal devices. For this to function, so far, we have relied on the human configuration of the devices sharing the same application. This includes, setting up the M2MI layer through Java, and starting the M2MI application. M2MI has worked fine under this scheme. A more general approach is to join a network and automatically discover any services available, in the case we have the M2MI layer already started. Afterwards, we can choose the service that we want to use. For …

Framework For Throughput Analysis Of Simple Reliable Multicast Protocol In A M2mp Network, Romi Saluja Jan 2005

Framework For Throughput Analysis Of Simple Reliable Multicast Protocol In A M2mp Network, Romi Saluja

Theses

M2MP has been developed to support M2MI applications in a mostly reliable wireless network. Currently, most M2MI/M2MP applications have been developed and tested in a reliable wired network. There has been a requirement to test the M2MP in a real world environment i.e. an unreliable proximal ad-hoc wireless network of mobile devices, where devices are constantly joining and leaving the network. Also, M2MP provides unreliable multicast service. There is a requirement to build and integrate a reliable multicast layer to the M2MP implementation to provide reliable multicast service. This Master s project aims to satisfy the requirements by building a …

Elgamal-Type Signature Schemes In Modular Arithmetic And Galois Fields, Gerard Nealon Jan 2005

Elgamal-Type Signature Schemes In Modular Arithmetic And Galois Fields, Gerard Nealon

Theses

A digital signature is like a handwritten signature for a file, such that it ensures the identity of the person responsible for the file and prevents any unauthorized changes to the original file. Digital signatures use the same technology as most public key cryptosystems in which there is a public and private key. Most mathematical operations are done over a field Zp where p is some large prime. It is possible to do the same operations over other finite fields. My project explains and studies the different finite fields that can be used as well as ways to implement and …

Gas Plume Species Identification In Lwir Hyperspectral Imagery By Regression Analyses, David Pogorzala Jan 2005

Gas Plume Species Identification In Lwir Hyperspectral Imagery By Regression Analyses, David Pogorzala

Theses

The goal of this research was to develop an algorithm for identifying the constituent gases in stack releases. At the heart of the algorithm is a stepwise linear regression technique that only includes a basis vector in the model if it contributes significantly to the fit. This significance is calculated by an F-statistic. Issues such as atmospheric compensation, gas absorption and emission, background modeling, and fitting a linear regression to a non-linear radiance model were addressed in order to generate the matrix of basis vectors. Synthetic imagery generated by the DIRISG model were used as test cases. Results show that …

Meniscus Studies In Water Immersion Optical Lithography At 193 Nm, Kiran J. Sonawane

Theses

A new approach for optical patterning that interposes a liquid between an exposure tool's projection lens and a wafer to achieve better depth of focus and resolution over conventional projection lithography is known as "Immersion Lithography". As industry focus is getting shifted towards the liquid immersion lithography to manufacture the commercial immersion tools, study of fluid flow and distribution is getting very crucial. The focus of this experimental work was to capture fluid flow and distribution and meniscus behavior on both bare and photoresist-coated glass wafers as well as silicon wafers and address one of the major challenges of immersion; …

Analytical Investigations Of Modified Active Remote Dynamic Vibration Absorbers, Piyes Srungboonmee Jan 2005

Analytical Investigations Of Modified Active Remote Dynamic Vibration Absorbers, Piyes Srungboonmee

Theses

This thesis investigates the performance of proposed modified Active Remote Dynamic Absorber (ARDA) systems. The modification is intended to improve the practicability of the previously proposed ARDA technique. The current ARDA concept utilizes an absorber system identical to the primary system (the system whose vibration is to be controlled) and two voltage amplifiers. The modification to the current ARDA system employs one amplifier only and a smaller absorber system. The mathematical model of the modified ARDA systems is developed based on a finite element approach. The developed mathematical model is programmed and solved using Maple. The program is validated by …

Torque Retention With Polypropylene Bottles, David Garrett Moszak Jan 2005

Torque Retention With Polypropylene Bottles, David Garrett Moszak

Theses

Two different case studies were examined to determine how different liner structures or plastic additives affect torque degradation. The first case study examined how torque is affected with and without the use of a zinc stearate plastic additive. The second case study examined how torque retention differs between a synthetic liner and a pulp board backed liner structure. Both torque studies provided a starting point for the application torque range for use in production. The torque studies were used to outline the necessary application torque so that the child resistant closures obtain and maintain the proper torque level over time …

Digital Asset Management System For Small Graphic Design Operations, Levy Chandra

Theses

According to the 1999 data of the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 75% of graphic design firms are small, with no more than four employees. Currently, there is a limited amount of literature relating to digital asset management (DAM) in relation to this population. These graphic design firms work on various projects using multiple digital assets for each, such as text, images, and fonts. Some firms choose to use proprietary asset management software to manage, search, and backup their assets, while others set up workflows that utilize existing network systems and graphic software.

This research is a case study which …

Generation Of A Combined Dataset Of Simulated Radar And Electro-Optical Imagery, Nancy L. Baccheschi Jan 2005

Generation Of A Combined Dataset Of Simulated Radar And Electro-Optical Imagery, Nancy L. Baccheschi

Theses

In the world of remote sensing there exist radar sensors and EO/IR sensors, both of which carry with them unique information useful to the imaging community. Radar has the capability of imaging through all types of weather, day or night. EO/IR produces radiance maps and frequently images at much finer resolution than radar. While each of these systems is valuable to imaging, there exists unknown territory in the imaging community as to the value added in combining the best of both these worlds. This work will begin to explore the challenges in simulating a scene in both a radar tool …

Securing Peer-To-Peer Overlay Networks, William Heinbockel

Theses

Overlay networks are virtual networks, which exist on top of the current Inter net architecture, and are used in support of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications. The virtualization provides overlays with the ability to create large, scalable, decentral ized networks with efficient routing. Many implementations of overlay networks have come out of academic research. Each provides a unique structure and routing configuration, aimed at increasing the overall network efficiency for a particular ap plication. However, they are all threatened by a similar set of severe vulnerabilities.

I explore some of these security deficiencies of overlay network designs and pro pose a new …

A Process Capability Index For Three-Dimensional Data With Circular Or Ellipsoidal Tolerances., Veljko Fotak Jan 2005

A Process Capability Index For Three-Dimensional Data With Circular Or Ellipsoidal Tolerances., Veljko Fotak

Theses

We discuss the estimation of a process capability index for three-dimensional data. Initially, we focus on the case in which the engineering tolerance associated with the measurements is a sphere. Then, we extend the discussion to the more general case in which the engineering tolerance is ellipsoidal. In both cases, we develop summary measures for repeatability and reproducibility, to be used in the context of a process capability index.

In the spherical tolerance case we define summary measures, where each measure is based on the diameter of a sphere that leads to a pre-specified capture rate (we will use here …

Low Frequency Noise Modeling In Single- And Double-Gate Mosfets, Shailesh S. Rai Jan 2005

Low Frequency Noise Modeling In Single- And Double-Gate Mosfets, Shailesh S. Rai

Theses

The Flicker or 1// noise dominates the noise spectrum at low frequency. A serious concern for MOSFETs for circuit application is much higher flicker (1//) noise because of the heterogeneous interface between silicon (Si) and silicon dioxide (Si02). Very high intrinsic flicker noise of CMOS transistors becomes a drawback for low-Intermediate Frequency (IF) or direct-conversion architectures. In spite of extensive research and efforts to understand the low-frequency noise origin in semiconductor devices, there exists no unique theory to explain the low-frequency noise generation mechanism. Flicker noise in MOSFETs is usually perceived to be caused by carrier density fluctuations, which is …

An Ultra Low Power Digital To Analog Converter Optimized For Small Format Lcd Applications, Imre Knausz Jan 2005

An Ultra Low Power Digital To Analog Converter Optimized For Small Format Lcd Applications, Imre Knausz

Theses

Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for mobile applications present a unique design challenge. These "small format" displays can be found primarily in cell phones and PDAs which are devices that have particularly stringent power requirements. At the same time, the displays are increasing in resolution with every generation. This is creating demand for new LCD display technologies. The predominant amorphous thin film transistor technology is no longer feasible in the new high resolution small format screens due to the fact that the displays require too many connections to the driver and the aperture ratios do not allow high density displays.

Multilayer Composite Structures For Stress Mitigation In Thin Films And Mems Applications., Michael J. Parthum Sr. Jan 2005

Multilayer Composite Structures For Stress Mitigation In Thin Films And Mems Applications., Michael J. Parthum Sr.

Theses

The IC and MEMS industry has been plagued by the problem of residual stresses that result from the deposition of materials on silicon. The residual stresses can induce the delamination of the thin firms, impede subsequent processing steps, or adversely effect the final geometry and performance of thicker films used in MEMS. The current research introduces a novel approach using a multi-layer sandwich composite approach to control residual stresses in a MEMS device, as well as to control the final geometry of the device. The method uses different materials and/or processing parameters, to create a stress - neutral laminate by …

Vhdl Modeling Of An H.264/Avc Video Decoder, Thomas Benjamin Warsaw Jan 2005

Vhdl Modeling Of An H.264/Avc Video Decoder, Thomas Benjamin Warsaw

Theses

Transmission and storage of video data has necessitated the development of video com pression techniques. One of today's most widely used video compression techniques is the MPEG-2 standard, which is over ten years old. A task force sponsored by the same groups that developed MPEG-2 has recently finished defining a new standard that is meant to replace MPEG-2 for future video compression applications. This standard, H.264/AVC, uses significantly improved compression techniques. It is capable of providing similar pic ture quality at bit rates of 30-70% less than MPEG-2, depending on the particular video sequence and application [20].

This thesis developed …

Is014001 And Oshas 18001, Effective Ehs Management Tools For Shoe Factories In Vietnam Case Study, Lam, Quang Anh Vu

Theses

With growing demand from stakeholders, Vietnamese shoe factories desperately need to effectively implement sound EHS management systems. The ISO14001 and OSHAS 18001 standards ("the Standards") have emerged as effective EHS management tools to serve those needs. However, the Vietnamese shoe industry has very limited experience in implementing those standards. They also do not understand the concept of cost-effectiveness and the challenges of implementation. Small medium enterprises anticipated difficulties in technology improvement required by the ISO 14001 due to resources limitation and all local companies concern about cost prohibited certification and no tangible market benefits (Greening Trade in Vietnam, 16). The …
