Design Reuse And Product Innovation, Osman T. Tasci Jan 2006

Design Reuse And Product Innovation, Osman T. Tasci

Theses

Along with many other measures, companies are looking at reusing existing designs (i.e., hardware and software) to cut costs. Design reuse saves resources by contributing to shorter time-to-market and less engineering, procurement, service, training and documentation costs. The aim of the present study is to analyze the relationship between design reuse and product innovation; specifically whether design reuse fosters product innovation as a primary hypothesis. Moreover, the moderating effects between design reuse and product innovation, which were identified as focused innovation, better system integration and creative reuse were explored. A survey was conducted and data on 43 companies was analyzed …

Efficient Job Scheduling For A Cellular Manufacturing Environment, Joshua Dennie Jan 2006

Efficient Job Scheduling For A Cellular Manufacturing Environment, Joshua Dennie

Theses

An important aspect of any manufacturing environment is efficient job scheduling. With an increase in manufacturing facilities focused on producing goods with a cellular manufacturing approach, the need arises to schedule jobs optimally into cells at a specific time. A mathematical model has been developed to represent a standard cellular manufacturing job scheduling problem. The model incorporates important parameters of the jobs and the cells along with other system constraints. With each job and each cell having its own distinguishing parameters, the task of scheduling jobs via integer linear programming quickly becomes very difficult and time-consuming. In fact, such a …

A Study Of The Effect Of Weight And Size On The Frequency And Height Of Drop Hazards In The Dhl Small Parcel Ground Environment, David Batz Jan 2006

A Study Of The Effect Of Weight And Size On The Frequency And Height Of Drop Hazards In The Dhl Small Parcel Ground Environment, David Batz

Theses

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of weight and size (volume) on the way in which a package is handled in the DHL small parcel ground environment. This was done by recording with Saver units the number of drops, as well as the height of drops, that occurred using 9 different package configurations, in a DHL ground shipping environment. The data that was collected showed that the heavier the packaged product, the less frequently it is dropped. The weight of the package had no effect on the drop heights, and the size of the package had …

Assisted Gps Solution In Cellular Networks, Gidon Lissai Jan 2006

Assisted Gps Solution In Cellular Networks, Gidon Lissai

Theses

The ‘Wireless Enhanced 911’ rules, which were issued in 1996, state that the position of a mobile device should be sent to Public Safety Answering Point (‘PSAP’) once a 9-1-1 call takes place from it. The rules imposed the cellular carriers to integrate a technology into their networks so that the mobile device location can be transferred once a 9-1-1 call is made. One of the chosen technologies was the Global Positioning System (GPS). The solution suggests integrating a GPS receiver into every cellular device. But the GPS receiver, as a stand alone solution, has some major performance limitations in …

Creating A High Level Incident Response/Forensics Policy By Complying With State And Federal Regulations, Jennie Delucia Jan 2006

Creating A High Level Incident Response/Forensics Policy By Complying With State And Federal Regulations, Jennie Delucia

Theses

With the increasing number of threats involving organization's today, i.e., identity theft, fraud, and embezzlement, it's imperative that companies have an incident response/forensic policy in place in order to successfully retain and preserve potential evidence. Organizations need to not only combat current problems, but to prevent them from reoccurring. Organizations should not feel alone in this battle. The federal government along with state governments have passed legislation that mandates an incident response/forensic policy be implemented in order to comply with the newly passed regulations, such has Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and Gramm-Leach Bliley (GLBA). Also …

Cooperative Learning Incorporating Computer-Mediated Communication: Participation, Perceptions, And Learning Outcomes In A Deaf Education Classroom, Michelle Pandian

Theses

Many researchers have documented deaf students' struggles with reading, writing, and communication in the classroom over the last twenty years Fang & Beil, 2005; Antia, et al., 2005; Mallory & Long, 2002; Mallory et al., 2006, Johnson & Johnson, 1986; Karchmer & Mitchell, 2003). With the advent of email and text pagers, students today need to be exposed to the communication technologies of the future (Marschark et al., 2002; Bruce & Levin, 2003); especially deaf students, who will more typically rely on technology in the workplace for communication than hearing people (Wood, 2002). This exploratory research study with deaf undergraduate …

Theses

Solvent is the largest-volume raw material used at Janssen Pharmaceutical (Ire) Ltd. Over 2.2 million m3 were used in 2004. The top 13 solvents make up 99% of this amount. There are two main uses for solvent on site, processing and cleaning. Processing uses 55% of the total solvent used on site, cleaning uses the remainder.

Waste solvent forms the majority of the hazardous waste produced at Janssen. Three treatment options exist at present for this waste: incineration, recovery for reuse and energy recovery. All of the hazardous waste produced on site must be exported for these treatment options, …

Writing With Faith, Charles M. Mclean Jan 2006

Writing With Faith, Charles M. Mclean

Theses

Faith is the belief in something larger than oneself. It is not provable; it is not necessarily logical. It is a feeling, an intuition. Faith can be a belief in a god or a set of ideals, but the important part is the believing. If a person is without faith, that person is lost and remains so until such time a belief is born again.

TI1is culminating project strives to look at faith through essay and short fiction. A preface essay speaks to what I think faith is and why every human being requires it. The introduction has three purposes. …

Development Of A Service-Oriented Communication Platform For Heterogeneous Voice Over Ip Networks., Aisling O'Driscoll

Theses

As broadband services have become more widespread in recent years due to a variety of government initiatives and the establishment of Wireless Internet Service Providers, user requirements have evolved and the market has become more competitive. Whilst this is beneficial for consumers it means that Internet Service Providers must offer a more diverse range of services coupled with standard broadband packages to distinguish themselves from their competitors, generate new revenue and strengthen their competitive advantage. Therefore many providers are looking to Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) to provide communication platforms, enabling services such as Voice over IP (VoIP) along with other …
