The Effects Of Histone H1 And Benzo[A] Pyrene On Chromatin Modifying Complexes., Zeina Salim Al Natour Jan 2007

The Effects Of Histone H1 And Benzo[A] Pyrene On Chromatin Modifying Complexes., Zeina Salim Al Natour

Theses

Packaging of DNA into the condensed structure of chromatin presents a barrier to many cellular processes that require DNA access such as transcription and replication. This problem is solved, in part, by the action of various complexes that modify the chromatin structure so that it becomes more accessible and, therefore, a more suitable platform for these processes. ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complexes and histone acetyltransferases are examples of many chromatin modifying complexes that work to alleviate chromatin-mediated repression. Histone H1 is an important component of chromatin which serves in both stabilizing and folding of chromatin into a higher order structure. Many …

The Effect Of The Size Of Pinning Centres On The Critical Current Density In High-Temperature Superconductors, Salama Bakhit Sowaidan Al-Neaimi Jan 2007

The Effect Of The Size Of Pinning Centres On The Critical Current Density In High-Temperature Superconductors, Salama Bakhit Sowaidan Al-Neaimi

Theses

Superconductor materials that have no resistance to the flow of electricity are one of the last great frontiers of scientific discovery.

Superconductivity in these materials occurs particularly in the copper-oxide (CuO2) planes. However, since these materials are type-II superconductors, magnetic fields can penetrate these materials in quantized amounts of flux called vortices without completely destroying superconductivity, but producing some resistance, due to vortex motion. In order to overcome the resistance problem, vortices must be pinned to prevent their motion and hence eliminate the resistance.

In this work study we have performed extensive numerical simulations to study the effect …

An Analysis Of Connectivity, Tayeb Al Karim Jan 2007

An Analysis Of Connectivity, Tayeb Al Karim

Theses

Recent evidence in biology indicates crossmodal, which is to say information sharing between the different senses, influences in the brain. This helps to explain such phenomenon as the McGurk effect, where even though a person knows that he is seeing the lip movement “GA” and is hearing the sound “BA”, the person usually can’t help but think that they are hearing the sound “DA”. The McGurk effect is an example of where the visual sense influences the perception of the audio sense. These discoveries transition old feedforward models of the brain to ones that rely on feedback connections and, more …

Complexity Of Control Of Borda Count Elections, Nathan Russell

Theses

In this thesis, we discuss some existing and new results relating to computational aspects of voting. In particular, we consider, apparently for the first time, the computational complexity of the application of certain types of control to the Borda count voting system. We use control in the formal sense of attempts by an election's administrator to make a specific candidate win or lose by various means. We consider control problems for weighted elections, as well as for unweighted elections with voter preferences input both individually and in succinct representation.

Despite the importance of these books, their typographic design is often neglected. Little attention is paid to the integration of text and image, and typographic variables are often …

Subthreshold And Gate Leakage Current Analysis And Reduction In Vlsi Circuits, Vinay Chinta Jan 2007

Subthreshold And Gate Leakage Current Analysis And Reduction In Vlsi Circuits, Vinay Chinta

Theses

CMOS technology has scaled aggressively over the past few decades in an effort to enhance functionality, speed and packing density per chip. As the feature sizes are scaling down to sub-100nm regime, leakage power is increasing significantly and is becoming the dominant component of the total power dissipation. Major contributors to the total leakage current in deep submicron regime are subthreshold and gate tunneling leakage currents. The leakage reduction techniques developed so far were mostly devoted to reducing subthreshold leakage. However, at sub-65nm feature sizes, gate leakage current grows faster and is expected to surpass subthreshold leakage current. In this …

Wide Bandgap Semiconductors For Harsh Environment Imaging: Temperature Dependence Of P-N Junction Detector Efficiency, Danielle Merritt Jan 2007

Wide Bandgap Semiconductors For Harsh Environment Imaging: Temperature Dependence Of P-N Junction Detector Efficiency, Danielle Merritt

Theses

The majority of image detectors to date have used silicon photodiode arrays for light capture and image formation. However, as imaging is performed in increasingly harsh environments, conventional silicon arrays begin to reach their physical device limitations and fail. Harsh imaging conditions include short wavelengths, high temperatures, and/or high radiation conditions. To aid future detector development, the theoretical energy-conversion efficiency of wide-bandgap semiconductor materials, which are long known for their favorable properties in harsh environments, has been studied. It has been hypothesized, but not shown until now, that wide bandgap semiconductors have better energy-conversion efficiencies at higher temperatures than conventional …
