Theses

Behavior Based Safety (BBS) has become an important part of the safety management system. More companies are implementing BBS to help improve the safety performance of their companies. With many consultant companies claiming their BBS programs will provide the best results, it is difficult to determine which BBS program is right for your company. This project will compare and contrast three well- known BBS programs. The three programs are Safety Performance Solution, DuPont Stop, and Behavior Safety Technology. Among the areas that will be covered in this project are: 1) The steps in developing and implementing a BBS program, 2) …

Nonlinear Vibration Of A Cantilever Beam, Iván Delgado-Velázquez Jan 2007

Nonlinear Vibration Of A Cantilever Beam, Iván Delgado-Velázquez

Theses

The vibration of a highly flexible cantilever beam is investigated. The order three equations of motion, developed by Crespo da Silva and Glyn (1978), for the nonlinear flexural-flexural-torsional vibration of inextensional beams, are used to investigate the time response of the beam subjected to harmonic excitation at the base. The equation for the planar flexural vibration of the beam is solved using the finite element method. The finite element model developed in this work employs Galerkin's weighted residuals method, combined with the Newmark technique, and an iterative process. This finite element model is implemented in the program NLB1, which is …

Development Of Subsidiarity Via Civil And Common Law Jurisprudential Epistemology, William Pieratt Demond Jan 2007

Development Of Subsidiarity Via Civil And Common Law Jurisprudential Epistemology, William Pieratt Demond

Theses

This article seeks to justify an examination of subsidiarity's development within Catholicism. Due to the fact that the European Union ["EU"] codified subsidiarity via the Treaty of Maastricht, subsidiarity is now a part of EU law. Although seemingly intended to resolve questions concerning the proper allocation of powers, its codification has generated substantial debate concerning the proper meaning(s) (if any) and/or application(s) of subsidiarity within the EU.

Due to the facts that 1) the EU's legal traditions are heavily influenced by both the civil and common law traditions, 2) both of these traditions advocate the use of established jurisprudential methodologies …

Bob Breitbard: San Diego Sportsman, Dan Yigal Fulop Jan 2007

Bob Breitbard: San Diego Sportsman, Dan Yigal Fulop

Theses

Most people can identify with holding onto possessions from the past. Childhood toys, vintage clothing you're hoping will again one day be fashionable, old dusty scrapbooks, or even that hideous lamp which no longer works. While the majority of our clutter is in fact junk, it still evokes fond trips down memory lane and might serve to tell a story about a specific time, place, or person. And then there was Bob Breitbard's "junk"-- priceless sports artifacts and memorabilia collected over some fifteen years, filling up his garage and forcing his wife to post an eviction notice for his beloved …

Nanomaterials For Organic Solar Cells, Annick Anctil Jan 2007

Nanomaterials For Organic Solar Cells, Annick Anctil

Theses

Organic solar cells performances are mainly limited by photon absorption due to the mismatch between the conducting polymer and the solar spectrum, as well as, exciton diffusion since the excitons are not efficiently dissociated into free charges. Nanomaterials such as fullerenes, quantum dots, and carbon nanotubes were investigated in combination with conjugated polymers to allow for a broader harvesting of the solar spectrum. For P3HT:PCBM solar cells, optimal efficiencies were obtained using a combination of annealing before, as well as, after contact deposition. Using the concepts developed for P3HT, the effect of solvent, molecular weight, and the type of fullerenes …

My Sister's Tears, Erika Dawn Whitfield

Theses

One of the most influential writers I studied in the Advanced Creative Writing cluster was Amiri Baraka. His style of writing distinguishes him from his peers. but the journey he took to get the caliber of writing he's at now excites me as a writer. From the Beat Period (1957-1962). The Transitional Period ( 1963-1965). The Black Nationalist Period (1965-1974). to the Third World Marxist Period (1974- ) (Beat Reader) Each period signified growth in his writing. but his way of thinking changed. He grew as a person. His transitions as a writer forced me to examine my own. My …

Learning Environments : Redefining The Discourse On School Architecture, Alessandro Degregori Jan 2007

Learning Environments : Redefining The Discourse On School Architecture, Alessandro Degregori

Theses

The thesis maintains that the physical environment of the school is only one component, although an important one, of learning environments suitable for learner-centered, consiructivist approaches to learning. Accordingly, school architecture should relate to both, the physical as well as the social environmental contexts. This perspective could invite educators and architects to participate in a collaborative discourse for realizing most effective and sustainable learning environments, one school at a time.

In search of learning factors, factors that could influence learning and engage educators and architects in a collaborative discourse, the study addresses the following: a) A review of literature …

Recent decades have witnessed unprecedented changes both in the world economy and in the composition of workforces internationally, resulting in a significant rise in female economic activity rates. Women’s increased involvement in the labour force is, however, not paralleled within the management levels of organisations. The persistent nature of the dearth of women in executive roles provides the context for this study. The unique focus of this thesis is women in middle-level management positions, as managers at this level are viewed as successors to senior organisational roles. Thirty female managers were interviewed, from organisations representing a wide range of industry …

The Endangered, Rick Mabrey

Theses

This writing project is a culmination of essays based on my personal experiences as an educator, and an environmentalist. The work illustrates a mindset of abuse and neglect that harms nature, and mistreats children. It offers hope through those who will nurture and not turn their back on the problems of society.

The endangered list no longer singles out animals in the wild. It now includes what is left of the open land, the healthy waterways, and many of the kids I teach.

St. Francis of Assisi said, "Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, …

Improved Sales Performance Through Effective Sales Training., Michael Falahee Jan 2007

Improved Sales Performance Through Effective Sales Training., Michael Falahee

Theses

Ireland’s economic success has been unprecedented between the period of 1993 and present. A number of internal and external factors accounted for this success. The economic performance was driven primarily by a relatively small number of foreign based firms who chose Ireland as their European base. Factors such as globalisation, an increasing domestic cost base and changes in EU legislation have lessened the Irish economy’s attractiveness to foreign direct investment.

Ireland has strong production and operational capabilities; it must develop expertise in two areas to ensure continued future success. These two areas are, building expertise in export sales and marketing …

Development Of Tunnel Diode Devices And Models For Circuit Design And Characterization, David Pawlik Jan 2007

Development Of Tunnel Diode Devices And Models For Circuit Design And Characterization, David Pawlik

Theses

Historically, the microelectronics industry has scaled down CMOS transistor dimensions in order to increase operating speeds, decrease cost per transistor, and free up on-chip real estate for additional chip functions. There are numerous challenges involved with scaling transistors down to the near term 32 nm node, and beyond. These challenges include short gate lengths, very thin gate oxides, short channel effects, quantum effects, band-to-band tunneling from source to drain, Gate Induced Drain Leakage, Fowler Nordheim tunneling, and increasing dopant concentrations. Field effect transistor circuits augmented with tunnel diodes lead to decreased circuit footprints, decreased device count, improved operating speeds, and …
