Determining The Feasibility Of A Method For Improving Bandwidth Utilization Of Cable Networks, David Pisano
Determining The Feasibility Of A Method For Improving Bandwidth Utilization Of Cable Networks, David Pisano
Theses
While the cable television industry has made significant investments in infrastructure to improve the number and quality of services delivered to their end customers, they still face the problem of limited bandwidth of signals down "the last mile" of coaxial cable to the subscriber premises. This thesis investigates an approach devised by the author to overcome this limitation. The method involves clustering of channels in both the upstream and downstream directions in a DOCSIS compliant cable system. A model of this approach is made and the theoretical maximum throughput is calculated for several scenarios. Results are compared to performance of …
An Exploration Of Covert Channels Within Voice Over Ip, Patrick Lloyd
An Exploration Of Covert Channels Within Voice Over Ip, Patrick Lloyd
Theses
In the following thesis, an overview of covert channels within Voice over IP is given and then expanded upon by presenting an experiment which proves the ability to hide messages within the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Session Description Protocol (SDP) of a Voice over IP packet. The plain text nature of the SIP and SDP packets allow for an easily embedded message to be encoded into the expected data, while also being "hidden in plain sight" due to the packet only being sent once per VoIP session. While previous papers [15] have proposed the ability to hide covert messages …
Individuals Behavior Regarding Open Wi-Fi Networks, Fausto I. Ramírez R.
Individuals Behavior Regarding Open Wi-Fi Networks, Fausto I. Ramírez R.
Theses
As WI-FI became commercially available and accepted by consumers into their homes and businesses the concept of Internet access was quickly associated to this technology. The mentioned occurred due to how the technology was primordially advertised, as a convenient accessory that enables users to have a cable free experience when dealing with their home network (primary created to distribute Internet access). This perception about the technology drives unwary and low tech individuals to believe that all open WIFI networks correspond to Internet access and so they do not hesitate in order to connect to these networks. The actions of these …
The Effect Of The Presence Of A Honeypot In A Protected Network Vs. An Unprotected Network, Jose Salcedo
The Effect Of The Presence Of A Honeypot In A Protected Network Vs. An Unprotected Network, Jose Salcedo
Theses
Honeypots are a relatively new way to deal with threats but in a very peculiar way; they are not a solution themselves as they don't solve a problem, rather than that Honeypots are flexible tools that can be used to collect information about the way an attack can affect the network. To achieve this Honeypots should be an easy target for attackers, and that's the reason why certain precautions must be taken when using one of these tools to avoid a problem bigger than a solution. In this paper it's going to be tested the effect that the implementation of …

Psychological Benefits And Educational Potential Of Physically Immersive Artificial Environment Pedagogy, Dean Ganskop
Psychological Benefits And Educational Potential Of Physically Immersive Artificial Environment Pedagogy, Dean Ganskop
Theses
Over the last decade, physically immersive artificial environments (PIAEs) have proliferated. These environments afford greater interactivity, which has been shown to increase learner understanding, knowledge retention, and interest in the subject (Bonwell & Eison, 1991, p. 3; Prince, 2004). It would follow, then, that PIAEs would have similar educational benefits. However, little research has been done to prove that such benefits exist. Immersive environments include 2-demensional and 2.5-dimensional on-screen displays, semi-immersive screens, and physically immersive setups, such as CAVE and blue-c (Display Systems: 3D & Advanced, 2008; Gross, n.d.). There are many perceived benefits to immersive environments. At present, their …

Firewall Resistance To Metaferography In Network Communications, Richard Savacool
Firewall Resistance To Metaferography In Network Communications, Richard Savacool
Theses
In recent years corporations and other enterprises have seen a consolidation of security services on the network perimeter. Services that have traditionally been stand-alone, such as content filtering and antivirus scanning, are pushing their way to the edge and running on security gateways such as firewalls. As a result, firewalls have transitioned from devices that protect availability by preventing denial-of-service to devices that are also responsible for protecting the confidentiality and integrity of data. However, little, if any, practical research has been done on the ability of existing technical controls such as firewalls to detect and prevent covert channels. The …

Unfortunately the cost of these systems and required training in use of the equipment inhibits their adoption and wide scale deployment across the …
Thumbscan: A Lightweight Thumbnail Search Tool, Joseph Elinski
Thumbscan: A Lightweight Thumbnail Search Tool, Joseph Elinski
Theses
Since the introduction of Windows 95B, Microsoft users have been able to select a thumbnail view of any system folder. This option prompts the operating system to create a miniature preview of each file. By default, these generated images are archived to a local thumbnail database for quick system retrieval. Once an image is placed in the database, it will never be removed. By viewing the contents of thumbnail databases, a forensic investigator can easily examine the past and present media of a given system. Though this cache is not a perfect record, it is a good indicator of media …

Towards Scale-Invariant Aboveground Biomass Estimation In Savanna Ecosystems Using Small-Footprint Waveform Lidar, Dave Kelbe
Theses
Land degradation is becoming an issue of increasing concern in the savanna ecosystems of southern Africa. As a result, there is a growing need to map structural changes at the fine scale, while retaining the ability to aggregate up to landscape level for analysis across land use gradients. Aboveground biomass (AGB) is an important indicator of vegetation structure and therefore is the ideal variable for estimation from light detection and ranging (lidar) data. To avoid the effects of scale, this paper takes a tree-delineation approach for segmentation of the structurally heterogeneous savanna environment. Diameter at breast height (DBH) measurements collected …
