Equity And Job Perception, Asha Krishnan May 1991

Equity And Job Perception, Asha Krishnan

Theses

This thesis examined the concept of equity and the importance of its perceptions on the job. A survey was conducted at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The sample consisted of 150 employees from 27 different departments. The employees were split into three status groups - Non-Professional Staff, Professional Staff and Faculty.

The questionnaire used in the survey was adopted from Carrell and Dittrich's "Organizational Fairness Scale", (1976). The questions probed seven dimensions of the job which were work pace, distribution of tasks, pay level, pay rules, latitude, rule administration, and pay administration.

The seven job dimensions were treated as dependent …

Attitudes And Job Images Of The Public And Private Sectors : A Comparison Of College Students In The United States And Taiwan, Hui-Yuan Liao

Theses

This study focuses on a comparison of US and Taiwan students' attitudes towards public and private organizations. To identify the differences between two samples, 60 US students and 65 Taiwan students completed a questionnaire on 40 job attributes. Mixed design ANOVA revealed significant differences between the two samples.

Overall, students from the US had more positive attitudes than students from Taiwan. For both groups, attitudes were more positive for private-sector organizations than for public-sector organizations. And both groups believed that organizations fared better on extrinsic attributes than on intrinsic ones. However, significant interactions indicated that attitudes are complex and varied …

Design For Manufacturability, Kocherlakota Sreedhar May 1991

Design For Manufacturability, Kocherlakota Sreedhar

Theses

Design for Manufacturability represents a new awareness of the importance of design as the first manufacturing step. It recognizes that a company cannot meet all its objectives with isolated design and manufacturing operations. The Design for Manufacturability approach embodies certain underlying imperatives that help maintain communication between all components of the Manufacturing and Design system and permit flexibility to adopt and to modify design during each stage of the product realization. Design for Manufacturability cannot be bought or sold and it should be implemented by management. Complete support of management to the implementation is very important to the success of …

Way To The Absolute, Gonca Ilbeyi May 1991

Way To The Absolute, Gonca Ilbeyi

Theses

Nowadays more and more people, especially who live in large cities, suffer from a terrible emptiness and boredom, as if they are waiting for something that never arrives. Within modern civilization, its people lose the meaning of their lives, values, and they find themselves in morally decayed. My main purpose, through the medium of art, is to express the complexities and paradoxes of human existence in modern industrial societies- not from a pessimistic, but a skeptical perspective. Alienation, depersonalization, loss of identity in this world by bureaucratic rules and regulations are central problems of all modern industrial societies. The rise …

Self Discovery And Personal Creation, Peggy Kehoe May 1991

Self Discovery And Personal Creation, Peggy Kehoe

Theses

My Thesis project is about self discovery and personal creation. I believe that contemplation and imagination are essential not only to the artist in creating his art, but to every man as he creates his life. I am interested in the primary purpose that art once had; the subtle magic that primitive artists invoked, hoping to protect, to change or to heal the inhabitants of earth. In my paintings, I want the inner world of the mind to marry reality, the two combining as powerful evocations of man's creative potential.

Information Retrieval, Paul Bartow May 1991

Information Retrieval, Paul Bartow

Theses

My time spent here at RIT has taken me many places within the understanding of art. I can honestly say the time was well worth it. I can't help but realize that an education is a wonderful thing and that having to pay for it is excluding many who could use it. I had no expectations coming to graduate school, which might have been a good thing. My main concern was to prepare myself for a life without school, where I could guide myself on my own thoughts and feel secure doing so. The work I've done here has gone …

Astronauts And Xingu: An Exhibition Of Cultural Ideograms, Edward Mineck Jan 1991

Astronauts And Xingu: An Exhibition Of Cultural Ideograms, Edward Mineck

Theses

The intention of my thesis is to alter some of American culture's prevailing sentiments on the relationship between: masculine and feminine; visceral and cognitive; natural and technological; as well as altering perceptions of the loci of power in our culture. The thesis exhibition was composed of seventeen gum bichromate assemblages composed of elementary images appropriated from popular media. Each composite piece is a recontextualization of extant representations. I have taken things from their typical or original context and re-presented them in a context that I have selected and directed. The new relationships established among the appropriated component images and the …

Algorithm Animation And Its Application To Artificial Neural Network Learning, Walter Bubie C. Jan 1991

Algorithm Animation And Its Application To Artificial Neural Network Learning, Walter Bubie C.

Theses

Algorithm animation is a means of exploring the dynamic behavior of algorithms using computer-generated graphics to represent algorithm data and operations. Research in this field has focused on the architecture of flexible environments for exploring small, complex algorithms for data structure manipulation. This thesis describes a project examining two relatively unexplored aspects of algorithm animation: issues of view design effectiveness and its application to a different type of algorithm, namely back-propagation artificial neural network learning. The work entailed developing a framework for profiling views according to attributes such as symmetry, regularity, complexity, etc. This framework was based on current research …

Theses

All Catholic churches of the St. Louis Archd1ocese were the focus of a study conducted to examine how the church meets the needs of the frail, elderly, and handicapped on the parish level. A total of 227 parishes were included 1n the survey; of these 138 responded to the questionnaire. A significant relationship between income of the parish and physical structural improvements to accommodate the frail, elderly and/or handicapped was not indicated. A significant difference between the number of male and female volunteers was not found. However, there were significant findings to support the hypothesis that Pastors and the Catholic …

Genroute: A Genetic Algorithm Printed Wire Board (Printed Wire Board (Pwb) Router), Bob Coward Jan 1991

Genroute: A Genetic Algorithm Printed Wire Board (Printed Wire Board (Pwb) Router), Bob Coward

Theses

The major effort of this thesis was to develop an electronic circuit routing system that utilizes genetic algorithms to perform Printed Wire Board (PWB) routing rather than brute force exhaustive searching methods. This problem can be classified as an NP-Hard optimization problem searching a large solution space. Some desirable characteristics of an electronic routing system are that it: Minimize the number of potential solutions Minimize the number of board layers and tap holes Minimize trace lengths and the number of "jogs" Minimize trace cross-talk and the board capacitance.

A Comparison Of Leadership Skills Of Managers Of High Performing Fast Food Units Vs. Managers Of Low Performing Fast Food Units, Jack W. Goodner Jan 1991

A Comparison Of Leadership Skills Of Managers Of High Performing Fast Food Units Vs. Managers Of Low Performing Fast Food Units, Jack W. Goodner

Theses

This Culminating Project will examine the difference in supervisory styles used by managers in high performing fast food units and those in low performing fast food units.

While management in its present form has existed only a brief time, countless attempts have been made to explain why some achieve good results and others poor results.

This study attempts to differentiate by demonstrating that managers of high performing units employ more appropriate supervisory styles than do those in low performing units.

In order to prove this assumption, responses were collected from ten fast food managers employed by Foodrnaker, Inc. (Jack-inthe- Box). …

Over the last decade research done by organizational psychologists, consultants, independent ·think· tanks, and decision experts have bombasted corporations with many management philosophies . Decision making is an integral …

A Relationship Between Birth-Order Position And The Incidence Of Eating Disorders, Mary Weber Jan 1991

A Relationship Between Birth-Order Position And The Incidence Of Eating Disorders, Mary Weber

Theses

Eating disorders, bulimia, anorexia, and compulsive eating are a rising concern for the female population as they currently affect women in almost epidemic proportions. Research has enabled us to categorize like-characteristics among those clients who are affected as well as, to develop with some consistency, portraits of the family systems in which these patients develop their symptoms.

A key factor in the family structure is the role that each sibling assumes, which is often directly influenced by the ordinal position of their birth in relationship to their siblings. Research has also identified a categorical profile of characteristics associated with each …

The Guilt/Shame Quality: Its Many Forms And Functions For Graphoanalytic Interpretation, Shirley Norfleet Jan 1991

The Guilt/Shame Quality: Its Many Forms And Functions For Graphoanalytic Interpretation, Shirley Norfleet

Theses

There was a two-fold purpose for this study: first, to investigate the view held by many graphoanalysts that guilt can be assessed by the identification of the stroke of "self-castigation". The second purpose was to investigate the relationship between the emotions of guilt and shame, and to further suggest to graphoanalysts the various traits to look for when evaluating the presence or absence of guilt and/or shame operating in the personality.

Thirty subjects were administered a guilt measurement test and a standard text model which was duplicated in their handwriting for comparisons and correlation with the stroke of "self-castigation". The …

Problems In Assessing And Treating Childhood Emotional Disorders: A Modest Proposal, Bettu Ann Parnell Jan 1991

Problems In Assessing And Treating Childhood Emotional Disorders: A Modest Proposal, Bettu Ann Parnell

Theses

This study is concerned with the difficulty of assessing and treating childhood emotional disorders. One may ask, "Why is it so difficult when there is a plethora of trained professionals to treat and assess these children and their families?" The author hypothesizes that, typically, these families see many professionals in their search for help, but the path becomes cluttered with different diagnoses, labels and a lack of congruence in making all the pieces of the puzzle fit for the child and family. Often, a family needs not only psychological help, but medical and educational assistance through the mental health system …

The Effects Of Spousal Career Status On The Decision To Offer Promotion, Gregory B. Holder Jan 1991

The Effects Of Spousal Career Status On The Decision To Offer Promotion, Gregory B. Holder

Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between the career status of a female employee's spouse and her promotability. Previous research has suggested managerial bias against dual-career marriages based on assumptions regarding geographic mobility and commitment to career (Rosen, Jerdee, and Prestwich, 1975; LeLouam and Decotiis, 1983). Expanding on this premise, 60 managers from a large, regional corporation were enlisted. Each manager was given a brief series of personnel decisions to rate on a four-point scale ranging from 1 (certain denial) to 4 (certain approval). One of these decisions concerned whether or not to offer a …

Art As Therapy And Meditation, Julia Ann Harmon Tilden Jan 1991

Art As Therapy And Meditation, Julia Ann Harmon Tilden

Theses

Art as Therapy and Meditation by Julia Ann Harmon Tilden explores the therapeutic and meditative qualities of art through a deeply personal and experimental journey during her graduate studies at Lindenwood College. Twenty six participants (22 white and 2 black males) all who had been diagnosed as HIV positive completed a battery of 11 psychological tests and a social and medical history questionnaire. Fifty four psychosocial factors were selected as having the potential to have a significant effect on immune response.

Correlational analyses yielded no strong relationships between the psychosocial factors and CD-4 T cell count or physical symptoms. Moderate associations were …

The Family Dance Model: A Definition And Comparison With The Beavers, Olson, And Mcmaster Models Of Family Functioning, Lyle V. Turnage Jan 1991

The Family Dance Model: A Definition And Comparison With The Beavers, Olson, And Mcmaster Models Of Family Functioning, Lyle V. Turnage

Theses

This study explored the hypothesis that married couples have ways of relating to each other which are peculiar to their relationship; and that other couples operate under the same or similar patterns of relating.

"Patterns in family relationships are often referred to as dances." (Lerner, 1990). Dances are determined by the music played, the manner of dress or costume, physical movements, and the tempo or beat (Chujoy & Manchester, 1967). Family dances are also recognized by physical interactions or movements, appearance or dress, and the beat of family messages. The family dance model will use names of dances such as …

A Group Art Therapy Program For Use With Adolescents Who Have Been Victims Of Incest, H. Alec Arnold Jan 1991

A Group Art Therapy Program For Use With Adolescents Who Have Been Victims Of Incest, H. Alec Arnold

Theses

This project represents the development of a manual for the application of art therapy activities in group therapy with adolescents who have been victims of incest. The treatment model presented in the manual is based on the need of incest victims to be able to articulate and abreact the feelings associated with their abuse within the context of a supportive and empathic relationship.

This need serves as the basis for this model for two principal reasons. In the act of incest victims are treated with complete disregard for their feelings and needs. Victims are treated as objects to be used …
