Separation Of Glucose - Fructose - Water Systems Via Thermal Parametric Pumping, Zikri Mostafa Ahmed May 1973

Separation Of Glucose - Fructose - Water Systems Via Thermal Parametric Pumping, Zikri Mostafa Ahmed

Theses

Series of experiments were carried out to determine the effect of different factors on adsorption from aqueous solutions of sugar using fuller's earth ( LW 16-30 Mesh ) as an adsorbent. The equilibrium data were fitted to the Langmuir's equation., and an explanation for the deviation of some of these data has been given.

Systems of glucose-fructose and water mixtures were subjected to semi-continuous and continuous parametric pumping operations using activated carbon (400 Filterasorb) as an adsorbent. The results obtained confirm the equilibrium theory of the parametric pump and essentially fulfill the requirements established by Chen and Hill (6) to …

Diffusion Studies With Novel Plastics, Marion Toohey Conway May 1973

Diffusion Studies With Novel Plastics, Marion Toohey Conway

Theses

The rates of diffusion through two fluorinated groups and two non-fluorinated groups of laboratory prepared membranes were compared with each other and with commercially available cellulose membranes. The membranes.were evaluated, in particular, for possible use with the artificial kidney. Diffusion experiments were conducted with sodium chloride, urea and uric acid. Experimental results were compared to diffusion coefficients calculated in the literature for cellulose membranes. The results show that the rates of diffusion of all of the solutes tested for the laboratory prepared membranes are comparable to that of the cellulose membranes. The fluorinated group had a slightly higher diffusion coefficient …

An Analysis Of The Geneva Mechanism As A Timing Device, Hubert W. Meyer May 1973

An Analysis Of The Geneva Mechanism As A Timing Device, Hubert W. Meyer

Theses

A mathematical analysis of the Geneva mechanism was conducted to determine the potential of this device as a tinting mechanism, and the feasibility of replacing the widely used pallet and starwheel escapement with a Geneva mechanism.

The primary objective of the study was to determine if the Geneva mechanism will attain a terminal velocity, and if so, how much time is required to reach this velocity.

To accomplish this objective, the differential equation of motion for the system was derived using Lagrangian dynatos. The equation was programmed and solved on a digital computer.

The study indicated that the Geneva mechanism …

Preparation Of Malachite Green Leucocyanide And A Study Of The Effects Of Dye Impurities, Paul Dennis Berg May 1973

Preparation Of Malachite Green Leucocyanide And A Study Of The Effects Of Dye Impurities, Paul Dennis Berg

Theses

Using a modification of a preparation method published by Tobin, Katzakian, and Chisholm, the photochromic leucocyanide of malachite green dye was prepared in a pure form. This leucocyanide was doped with various amounts of the dye as an impurity and the effect of the dye on the photolysis and fade reactions tested.

It was determined that the dye has the effect of merely masking the leucocyanide during photolysis exposure but does chemically increase the completeness of the fade reaction.

A Method Of Determining Dot Sharpness Of Lithographic Films, Timmy Mccreary May 1973

A Method Of Determining Dot Sharpness Of Lithographic Films, Timmy Mccreary

Theses

Two methods were attempted to determine an objective evaluation of lithographic films with respect to the sharpness of half-tone dots produced by the films. In Method I a step function target was placed in contact with a continuous wedge and a film sample. After exposure and development, a curve of the film was drawn in terms of per cent transmission versus log exposure. Since the input (target) is a step function, the output (curve) should also be a step function. It was expected that the width of the step in the curve would yield some measure of how well the …

Fast Fourier Transform With Computer Program, James Chapin Mar 1973

Fast Fourier Transform With Computer Program, James Chapin

Theses

Many computer programs have been developed to calculate the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). It is the intention of this thesis to develop the tree graph idea, presented by E. 0. Brigham and R. E. Morrow in the article "The fast Fourier transform," into another computer program that will calculate both the forward and inverse Fourier transforms using nonsymmetrical periodic functions. Most of the information obtained was from periodicals with relatively little available in text books. General matrix equations and calculations presented in proofs were developed by this thesis. The tree graph idea was also expanded to a general form. First …

The Chemistry Of Azides, Edward D. Nelson Feb 1973

The Chemistry Of Azides, Edward D. Nelson

Theses

A review of the decomposition of alkyl and aryl azides by thermolysis and photolysis has been accomplished. Organic azides are a very distinct species that undergo its own unique reactions. Azides decompose to form an electron deficient nitrogen having a sextet of elcctrons. This is called a Nitrene. Nitrenes can exist in the singlet or triplet state. The triplet behaves like a diradical. General and specific reactions of nitrenes have been shown with detailed mechanisms accounting for the products. The main modes of nitrene stabilization are rearrangement, hydrogen abstraction and insertion. Insertion is characteristic of singlet species and abstraction characteristic …

Relationship Of Preferred Tone Reproduction To Picture Size, David Miller Jan 1973

Relationship Of Preferred Tone Reproduction To Picture Size, David Miller

Theses

A relationship between preferred tone reproduction and final picture size is suggested in many forms in the literature and in practical experience. This project uses photographic halftone prints varying in tone reproduction and produced at different sizes to investigate this relationship. The tone reproduction variations are introduced electronically using an RCA color scanner and a method of eigenvector analysis is used to reduce these tone reproductions down to their important components. The final set of prints consisting of ten tone reproductions, three reproduced sizes, and two sharpnesses are evaluated to determine their subjective quality in the judgement of a group …

Investigations In Post-Fixation Physical Development, R. Jerry, J. Nelson Jan 1973

Investigations In Post-Fixation Physical Development, R. Jerry, J. Nelson

Theses

The procedure outlined by Matejec, Photograpische Korrespondenz, 104, 153 (1968), fixation in a thiosulfate-sulfite solution to which AgBr has been added, followed by washing in 1% sulfite solution, and development in a metol-sulfite-AgNO3 developer, was tested on seven silver iodobromide emulsions, each of a different average grain size. Samples were exposed, and processed by chemical and physical development. Matejec’s results, equality of threshold speed with post-fixation physical and chemical development, could only be realized with a very fine grain emulsion and high intensity exposure. It was found that the efficiency of physical development, relative to chemical development, is inversely related …

Insulation Coordination On A 115 Kv System Addition To The Rochester Gas And Electric Corporation System, Clifton Olson Jan 1973

Insulation Coordination On A 115 Kv System Addition To The Rochester Gas And Electric Corporation System, Clifton Olson

Theses

The Transient Network Analyzer is used to determine the maximum magnitude and duration of transient and sustained overvoltages which can occur on a system during any change of state. Where a change of state may be the energization or deenergization of a line by operating a circuit breaker, the occurrence of a fault condition or a sudden loss of load. These overvoltages are then used to establish equipment needs and duties, design alternatives which meet these requirements and establish acceptable operating procedures. With these established, the transient voltage magnitudes are then used to establish the transmission line Basic Insulation Level …

The Fate Of Hazardous Polluting Substances In An Aqueous Environment, Robert Paul Casani Oct 1972

The Fate Of Hazardous Polluting Substances In An Aqueous Environment, Robert Paul Casani

Theses

The fate of Hazardous Polluting. Substances (HPS) in an aqueous environment has been investigated using ultraviolet light. Chlorobenzene, o-cresol and nitrobenzene were used as model HPS for this study. The kinetics were followed and good first order plots were obtained for all compounds. The temperature of the reaction was shown to effect the rate. Solid insoluble and soluble non-volatile products were formed in the photolytic reaction of the three model systems.

The Aging Of Sbr Vulcanizates, Arthur Robert Leckart Sep 1972

The Aging Of Sbr Vulcanizates, Arthur Robert Leckart

Theses

A literature survey was conducted on SBR aging, Being vulnerable to attack by the forces of nature (such as ozone, oxygen, heat and light), SBR vulcanizates requires the addition of chemicals to retard aging. Phenylamines were found to be the best type of antiaging additives, The effectiveness of other antiaging additives were examined. Although the mechanisms of aging are not perfectly understood; sane theories and aging reactions are discussed.
