How A Role Is Created: Petronella Van Daan In The Diary Of Ann Frank, Cheryl Metzger

Theses

This 1979 Master of Fine Arts thesis by Cheryl Metzger explores the process of creating the role of Petronella Van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank, performed at Lindenwood Colleges. Metzger documents her in-depth character analysis, rehearsal experience, and performance development, using both primary sources and theatrical techniques. She emphasizes emotional authenticity, subtext, and the historical context of the Holocaust. The thesis includes detailed reflections on blocking, costume, makeup, and the character’s psychological motivations. It serves as both a personal acting journal and a guide to portraying complex historical figures in drama, particularly within ensemble productions rooted in …

The Myth Of Death And Rebirth: Its Manifestation In Contemporary Psychology, Randy Ring Apr 1979

The Myth Of Death And Rebirth: Its Manifestation In Contemporary Psychology, Randy Ring

Theses

The thesis, "The Myth of Death and Rebirth: Its Manifestation in Contemporary Psychology," explores the pervasive concept of death and rebirth across historical, religious, and psychological contexts. Beginning with the idea's presence in ancient mythologies like the Osiris myth and Eastern religious beliefs, the thesis highlights how these cultural narratives framed death not as an end but as a necessary transition to renewal. It emphasizes the symbolic role of death/rebirth rituals in premodern societies, where they marked transformative life stages and spiritual initiation.

The work transitions into examining modern psychology, particularly the contributions of Carl Jung and others who identified …

On The Analysis Of The Timoshenko Beam Theory With And Without Internal Damping, Chinubhai Doshi Feb 1979

On The Analysis Of The Timoshenko Beam Theory With And Without Internal Damping, Chinubhai Doshi

Theses

The Timoshenko beam equation in terms of variable 'wB' is derived where 'wB’ is the deflection due to the bending of a beam. The equation is used to analyze an infinite beam loaded with (i) a concentrated transverse load and (ii) an impulse. It is also shown that the rotatory damping in the equation eliminates the increasing amplitude in the propagation of the bending moment when an impulse is applied to an infinite beam. Also the general procedure for the anlysis of a non-homogeneous equation is explained.

William And Marion Kettner: Brother Bill And The Lass From Tuolumne, Lucille Clark Duvall Jan 1979

William And Marion Kettner: Brother Bill And The Lass From Tuolumne, Lucille Clark Duvall

Theses

The presence and financial impact of the United States Navy upon the city and county of San Diego cannot be disputed. The person responsible in large part for this impact was Congressman William Kettner, whose vision, foresight, and singleminded devotion to the city was legendary in his time. Little is known today of this outstanding citizen save a main thoroughfare, Kettner Boulevard, named in the Congressman's honor in 1921. Yet this man, among other accomplishments, brought the Navy to San Diego, which today claims one out of every three county residents as either active duty, retired, a member of the …

Art Therapy For Emotionally Disturbed Children: Clay And Media Dimension Variables, Wendy Wirth Jan 1979

Art Therapy For Emotionally Disturbed Children: Clay And Media Dimension Variables, Wendy Wirth

Theses

This thesis investigates the application of art therapy for the evaluation and treatment of emotionally disturbed children, with a specific focus on the use of clay and Media Dimension Variables (MDV). The author posits that clay is an exemplary medium for therapeutic intervention due to its plasticity, three-dimensional nature, and capacity to range from resistive to fluid states. The study adopts Kagan’s (1969) MDV system to structure therapeutic interventions, categorizing art activities by three distinct variables:

  • Structure: The extent of guidelines or controls (High vs. Low).

  • Media Quality: The inherent properties of the material (Resistive vs. Fluid).

  • Task Complexity …

A Study Of The Mechanism Of The Sabattier Effect, Steven Oshry Jan 1979

A Study Of The Mechanism Of The Sabattier Effect, Steven Oshry

Theses

Conditions for producing the Sabattier effect in Eastman fine grain release positive 5302 film were established. Modifications of the second developer to develop more internal latent image by the addition of potassium iodide or to increase solution ~ physical development by the addition of sodium thiocyanate and sodium sulfite were performed. These modifications made no significant change in the Sabattier effect. When chemical fog (from sodium borohydride) was substituted for the exposure during development, no reversal corresponding to the Sabattier effect was obtained.

Second Stage Autoradiographic Amplification Of Developed Underexposed Tri X Emulsion Images, David Dempster

Theses

A series of del iberately underexposed Kodak Film Type Tri-X negatives were first, conventionally developed, the image silver made radioactive with sulfur-35 thiourea, and by using an autoradiographic technique, the image recovered on X-ray film. The resolution and characteristic curve parameters of the final image compared to those of the original donor image were determined by varying the secondary exposure time (contact time between radioactivated film and x-ray emulsion), type of x-ray films and exposure levels. The Tri-X Pan emulsion donor image was amplified using Kodak "NMC", "MA" and "RP" X-ray films as receivers. "NMC" was slightly preferable to "MA", …

Interimage Effects And The Mtf Of A Color Reversal Film, Joel Panning Jul 1978

Interimage Effects And The Mtf Of A Color Reversal Film, Joel Panning

Theses

Interimage effects have long been recognized as a factor in the reproduction of color. Reversal materials are no exception and exhibit interimage effects which have previously been revealed through techniques using END analysis. This study presents a method for revealing the presence of interimage effects in a reversal film's Modulation Transfer Function. Utilizing filtering techniques, two dyes of a three color transparency are eliminated from the final image by exposure and development. The remaining single dye image at a specified level is then compared to the corresponding layer and image in a colorimetrically specified neutral. The edge gradient analysis method …

A Preliminary Investigation Into The Effect Of Select Paper Characteristics On Dot Gain In Web Offset Lithography, Timothy Clark Jun 1978

A Preliminary Investigation Into The Effect Of Select Paper Characteristics On Dot Gain In Web Offset Lithography, Timothy Clark

Theses

This thesis describes a screening experiment designed to determine which of seven paper characteristics influence dot gain in web offset lithography. Dot gain is the enlargement of halftone dots during printing from plate to paper with a resultant increase in dot area. The variability of dot gain during a press run and from run to run is detrimental to the quality of black and white and color reproductions. The seven paper characteristics: gloss, smoothness, absorption, physical density, caliper, opacity, and formation are measurable characteristics used to describe the printability of a paper. Using one unit of a four-unit web offset …

Semicontinous Ph-Parametric Pump : Experimental Study, Hsien-Chih Lee May 1978

Semicontinous Ph-Parametric Pump : Experimental Study, Hsien-Chih Lee

Theses

Voidage of SP Sephadex (C-50) ion exchanger at different aqueous buffer concentration and the pH have been estimated from draining the interstitial aqueous. Experimental results of the SP Sephadex (C-50) voidage at pH cycling zone are in quantitative agreement with previous test method, so the voidage estimated from draining the interstital aqueous can be used in pH-parametric pumping. The optional displacement volume in semicontinuous pH-parametric pump of different buffer concentration can be predicted from voidage. A semicontinuous pH-parametric pump for separating proteins has been experimentally investigated using the model system haemoglobin and albumin on a. SP Sephadex (C-50) ion exchanger. …

A Kinetic Study Of The Reactions Of Poly-L-Lysine With 1-Halo-2, 4-Dinitrobenzenes, Raymond K. Rakowitz May 1978

A Kinetic Study Of The Reactions Of Poly-L-Lysine With 1-Halo-2, 4-Dinitrobenzenes, Raymond K. Rakowitz

Theses

The kinetics of the reactions of poly-L-lysine with 1-Fluoro, 1-Chloro, 1-Bromo, and 1-Iodo-2,4-Dinitrobenzenes have been studied. The investigation was done at 25°C as a function of pH and concentration. In all cases the rate of reaction increased as pH increased. In the reactions of Chloro, Bromo, and Iododinitrobenzenes with Polylysine the reaction rate is the composite of two rates; one associated with the random coil and one associated with the helical conformation. For the reaction of Fluorodinitrobenzene with Polylysine the reaction rate is the composite of four rates; two associated with the random coil and two associated with the helical …

The Determination Of The Operating Characteristics Of A Newspaper Camera Department By Using Queueing Analysis, Owen Smith May 1978

The Determination Of The Operating Characteristics Of A Newspaper Camera Department By Using Queueing Analysis, Owen Smith

Theses

The methods of operation of many newspaper camera departments have been established over a long period by many different supervisors and department heads. The system may have been good once but went bad because the nature of the department's operations changed without corresponding changes in the system. The production manager must be able to detect when a system needs modifying. Presently, there are few tools available to the manager for evaluating the effectiveness of the department. The goal of this study was to demonstrate how a very simple analytical technique could be applied to a camera department's operations and, thereby, …

Production And Evaluation Of A Holographic Lens, H. Scott Gregory May 1978

Production And Evaluation Of A Holographic Lens, H. Scott Gregory

Theses

This thesis is concerned with the production of high diffraction efficiency holographic lenses for laser machining. A holographic lens is a high efficiency, low absorption phase hologram which, in this application, is used to diffract an expanded, highpower laser beam into a desired focal point or pattern. For ideal phase holograms, the coupled–wave theory, as applied by H. Kogelnik1, predicts diffraction efficiencies as high as 100%. This implies that all the power in the expanded laser beam could be diffracted into the focal point or pattern. Single focal point holographic lenses have been produced with 40% diffraction efficiency. These lenses …

Characteristics Of Thermoplastic Sensitivity Due To Thickness, Jeffrey Fleisher Apr 1978

Characteristics Of Thermoplastic Sensitivity Due To Thickness, Jeffrey Fleisher

Theses

Thermoplastic, as a relief image recording material, has several advantageous characteristics. All processing is dry, development is almost instantaneous and in situ, and the recorded image can be erased and reused. Theoretical studies have shown that the amount of relief image formed in a thermoplastic is a function of the thermoplastic thickness and frequency of input exposure. This thesis shows that this relationship is valid under a number of physical restraints. Results indicate that there is a thickness to input-signal-modulation interaction within the thermoplastic. With variable frequency sinusoids as the input, the physical structure of the relief fringes formed is …

The Investigation Of Metameric Grays For The Testing Of Spectral Changes In The D5000 Standard Illuminant, Chun-Fai Alexander Wat Mar 1978

The Investigation Of Metameric Grays For The Testing Of Spectral Changes In The D5000 Standard Illuminant, Chun-Fai Alexander Wat

Theses

Very often, different results are obtained when colored originals and/or reproductions under different so-called standard light sources are evaluated. A possible explanation for the different results is that not all admissible standard sources have the same spectral power distribution, either due to differences in manufacturing or due to aging. A possible solution to the problem would be to determine how the spectral power distribution of a given illuminant differs from the standard (D5000) distribution by visually comparing suitable metameric grays with a stable non-selective gray under the illuminant in question. This comparison would serve as a quick and inexpensive way …
