A Comparison Of The Perception Of Juxtaposed Tones In Newspaper Images When Screened With Conventional And Random Dot Screens, Sylvia Monteiro Apr 1982

A Comparison Of The Perception Of Juxtaposed Tones In Newspaper Images When Screened With Conventional And Random Dot Screens, Sylvia Monteiro

Theses

The halftone process has been the conventional means of reproducing photographic artwork on newsprint. The use of relatively coarse screen rulings, dictated by the paper characteristics, produces an image with a noticeable dot pattern. Furthermore, the printing process is susceptible to extreme dot gain variation, which affects tone reproduction and the pictorial communication of the image. There were good reasons to suspect that a random dot screen could give more consistent tone rendition than a conventional halftone screen. A comparative study of the consistency of perception of conventional and randomly screened images when printed on newsprint has not yet been …

Image Quality As A Function Of Unsharp Masking Band Center, Chia-Chin Liu Jan 1982

Image Quality As A Function Of Unsharp Masking Band Center, Chia-Chin Liu

Theses

Unsharp masking is an image enhancement technique used to obtain a Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) greater than unity within a given spatial frequency band. In unsharp masking, the mask forms a slightly blurred version of the original image. The result is more severe in the high frequency region than at low frequencies. The final image is made by combining the original positive and the blurred negative images. The subjective quality of images resulting from unsharp masking is a function of the frequency response of the human eye. This study evaluates the unsharp masking technique by implementing the Subjective Quality Factor …

The Role Of Art In The Expression Of Individual And Family Dynamics Related To "Anorexia Nervosa", John Joseph Collins

Theses

Art can be a powerful experience. In this project , the artwork of a client diagnosed as having "anorexia nervosa" is explored in terms of how her art expresses her personal conflicts and family dynamics. Due to the particular quality of the family system of which the anorexic is a part, it is extremely important to involve the family in the treatment plan. For this reason, the emphasis on the whole family , or more specifically, the way they relate with one another, is one prime focus in t he discussion of the client 's artwork in this study. Although …

The Law And The Nurse Anesthetist, Beverly Ann Krause Jan 1982

The Law And The Nurse Anesthetist, Beverly Ann Krause

Theses

Should the surgeon, as "captain of the ship", be liable for the negligent acts of the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist? The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist is a highly skilled and educated nurse and is far more informed about anesthesia than the surgeon . The surgeons resent this needless liability , and because of this, the use of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to administer anesthetics might decrease.

To prove that the hypothesis was correct, several methods of research were done . A content analysis showed that the courts are divided on their decisions. There have been many decisions absolving the surgeon …

Obstetrical Anesthesia Curriculum Project, Margaret A. Wittman Jan 1982

Obstetrical Anesthesia Curriculum Project, Margaret A. Wittman

Theses

The project idea stems from my work as a clinical instructor in nurse anesthesia. I have noticed that there is a great disparity between the didactic work done in the classroom and the clinical work done in the operating rooms. Instead of applying the classroom material to the actual case work, thereby making it important and meaningful to the student, the link between the two areas is virtually ignored. The aim in developing my project is to remedy this situation. In designing a curriculum for obstetrical anesthesia, I will attempt to utilize teaching methodologies which will not encourage rote memorization …

Prediction Of Small-Scale Densities Using The Chemical And Optical Spread Functions, David S. Cline Jan 1982

Prediction Of Small-Scale Densities Using The Chemical And Optical Spread Functions, David S. Cline

Theses

Development adjacency effects and optical spread in photographic systems cause difficulties in predicting small-scale densities. These effects can be quantified as spread functions. The optical spread func tion describes the light scatter of the film. The chemical spread func tion describes the lateral diffusion of development- inhibiting and dev elopment-accelerating reaction products. These spread functions can be used along with the sensitometry and covering power relationships of the system to predict small-area densities from the object exposure profile. A study based on C. N. Nelson's work was undertaken to develop a math ematical model that uses the optical and chemical …

Investigation Of A Method To Increase The Sensitivity Of Counter-Current Immunoelectrophoresis Using Direct-Contact Photography, James E. Hohenberger Jan 1982

Investigation Of A Method To Increase The Sensitivity Of Counter-Current Immunoelectrophoresis Using Direct-Contact Photography, James E. Hohenberger

Theses

Counter-current Immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) has been used to detect bacterial capsular polysaccharides in both cerebrospinal fluids and blood serum of children with systemic meningococcal diseases. The sensitivity of the method depends upon the titre of the antisera. It was found that the sensitivity of CIE could not be increased by the method of direct-contact ultraviolet photography. The sensitivity could be increased by one serial dilution, on the average, by the treatment of a 0.25% tannic acid wash for 15 minutes.

A Case For Family Therapy For Low-Income Families, Ruth Mihevc Nov 1981

A Case For Family Therapy For Low-Income Families, Ruth Mihevc

Theses

"A Case for Family Therapy for Low-Income Families" explores the challenges faced by low-income families in accessing mental health services, particularly family therapy, and presents a model for addressing these challenges. The thesis begins by examining the relationship between social class and mental illness, noting that lower-income individuals face greater barriers to mental health care while also experiencing higher rates of mental illness. These barriers include logistical issues such as transportation, financial constraints, and scheduling conflicts, as well as systemic biases in the mental health delivery system that make it difficult for low-income families to access appropriate care.

Theses

This study was designed to investigate the library education of teachers in the Lutheran elementary schools in the Saint Louis area. It vas hypothesized that teachers were not prepared to use the library as it should be used, partly because they had not been taught to do so, and that their feelings of how adequately trained they were would depend on when and where they had received their education. Elementary teachers, a total of 244 teachers, in twenty-nine schools were surveyed. Results indicated that generally the teachers are not well trained in formal courses in library education, but obtained most …

Control Of Construction Costs During Construction, David H. Foo May 1981

Control Of Construction Costs During Construction, David H. Foo

Theses

The construction of a major project requires a vast amount of time, money, material and human resources. Proper coordination of these elements into an array of activities is crutial to the success of the project if it is to be built on time and within budget. As technology advances, the complexity of the project increases the resources to build them remain finite, and therefore, the project manager must seek methods to improve control on the construction project.

This thesis provides an overall view of the relatively new and rapidly expanding field of cost engineering. Cost engineering may be defined as …

Factors Influencing The Acceptance Of Computer Assisted Estimating, Sharon Ryan May 1981

Factors Influencing The Acceptance Of Computer Assisted Estimating, Sharon Ryan

Theses

In spite of its advantages over manual estimating methods, computer assisted estimating (CAE) lacks acceptance in the printing industry today. Possible reasons for non-acceptance are: 1) the cost of CAE, 2) CAE's lack of versatility, 3) printing manager's lack of knowledge on the subject of CAE and/or computers in general, and 4) the small size of the majority of the printing companies does not warrant the use of CAE. A survey questionnaire was designed for the purpose of finding out how printing companies feel about CAE, and if the reasons listed above are, in fact, major influences on their decision …

The Halftone Effect In Color Photographic Enlargements, Rick Crowsey May 1981

The Halftone Effect In Color Photographic Enlargements, Rick Crowsey

Theses

In continuous-tone photography, a 'Halftone Effect" sometimes occurs that alters the tone reproduction in a distinctive way. Highlight contrast is decreased and middletone densities are lowered. Published data show that this effect occurs in black-and-white photography when the grain pattern of the negative is reproduced very sharply in the print . High-magnification enlargements are especially susceptible. Does a corresponding effect occur in color photography? A search of the literature reveals no answer. The research here described is to determine, by direct measurements of densities in sharp and blurred enlargements, the magnitude of the halftone effect in particular color enlargements from …
