Determining Sustainable Urban Renewal: A Case Of Quantifying Sustainability For Adaptive Reuse Within Mumbai’S Textile Mill Sector, Arundhati Rajesh Kawlekar
Theses
This study explores adaptive reuse as a sustainable approach to urban development in Mumbai, India, focusing on the revitalization of a heritage textile mill site. It investigates how historical significance and evolving community needs can shape design decisions, while assessing sustainability through Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and energy efficiency metrics. Mumbai’s defunct textile mills, once central to its industrial growth, now pose challenges to urban vitality. Through a literature review, the paper examines their historical, social, and cultural relevance and the decline of the mill industry. Adaptive reuse emerges as a key strategy to reimagine these structures, offering an environmentally …

This study focused on the Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), a species currently classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, evaluating the conservation policies and measures implemented by selected English-speaking countries. The study employed a policy analysis approach, reviewing national and international treaties relevant to leatherback conservation. The findings revealed that while many countries align their policies with global treaties, some gaps remain, particularly in addressing threats to adult leatherbacks …
Methionine Matters: Comparative Dynamic Insights Into Viral Inhibition Of Host Rna Export Via Rae1-Nup98, Skye Bixler
Methionine Matters: Comparative Dynamic Insights Into Viral Inhibition Of Host Rna Export Via Rae1-Nup98, Skye Bixler
Theses
Over time, viruses have evolved a myriad of mechanisms to gain an advantage in the virus-host battle, such as inhibiting host mRNA export through RNA Export Factor 1 (Rae1) and Nucleoporin 98 (Nup98). This strategy employed by the Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV) M protein, Kaposi’s Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus (KSHV) ORF10, and SARS-CoV-1/2 ORF6 disrupts antiviral production. Despite their evolutionary distance, these viral proteins share a key methionine flanked by acidic residues that competitively bind to the ssRNA binding pocket of Rae1. The VSV mutant, R1, carries an M51R mutation that disrupts viral inhibition and restores host gene export— a pattern observed …
The Drifter: Creating A Family Archive To Rediscover Lost History, Gabriella Smith
The Drifter: Creating A Family Archive To Rediscover Lost History, Gabriella Smith
Theses
When history goes undocumented or removed from public access, there is always a question as to how to preserve it. This thesis focuses on the creation of a family archive as a means to preserve and rediscover lost history. When lost history is recovered stories can be completed and we, as a civilization, can gain a better understanding of what our history is. This will be showcased through the creation of the Jerrold Smith Family Archive. Jerrold Smith (1941-1986) a native Rochesterian, grew up with a love of crafts and creating new things. When he passed, he left behind a …

Stories In Style: Interactive Fashion Exhibits As Tools For Activating Special Collections, Riley Mason
Theses
Interpretation is a museum’s most significant form of communication with visitors. Historic collections, material representations of distinct historical narratives and themes, hold objects and cultural knowledge that enable them to contextualize contemporary concepts like fashion through exhibit-based interpretation and extend these concepts beyond labels through interactivity. To investigate the role of these specialized repositories in challenging existing narratives and connecting with modern audiences, this thesis developed a collection-driven exhibit to answer the following question: how can institutions activate special collection objects through relevant interpretation and non-digital interactive experiences in exhibits? Through researching and analyzing four objects from the Bruce and …

Wide Lock-In Energy Harvesting From Vortexinduced Vibrations Of A Deformable Cylinder, Ahmed Raafat Mostafa
Wide Lock-In Energy Harvesting From Vortexinduced Vibrations Of A Deformable Cylinder, Ahmed Raafat Mostafa
Theses
Energy harvesting from ambient sources has gained attention due to increasing energy demands. Despite VIV-based harvesters showing significant potential, their lock-in region, where significant power is generated, is narrow. Given the continuously varying ambient conditions of fluid currents, harvesters can easily fall into de-synchronization, yielding low energy output. Existing solutions like tunable masses or multiple degrees of freedom systems increase complexity and weight, limiting practical applications. This work introduces a novel variable diameter cylinder mechanism—a practical technique that actively tunes the cylinder’s geometry in real time to enhance energy harvesting efficiency from VIV. The mechanism employs an expanding pulley system …

Reading Tipu's Tiger: Hybridity And The Sound Of A Silenced Roar, Sarah M. Jackson
Reading Tipu's Tiger: Hybridity And The Sound Of A Silenced Roar, Sarah M. Jackson
Theses
Tipu’s Tiger, a powerful artifact at the nexus of colonialism, cultural preservation, and museum practices, serves as a unique case study of shifting historical interpretations. Originally crafted in Mysore, India as a symbol of resistance against British colonial forces, the object was later repurposed as a trophy of empire. This dual role embodies the tensions central to postcolonial theory, where the meanings of cultural artifacts shift depending on the context in which they are placed. Through the lens of Homi Bhabha’s theory of hybridity, Tipu’s Tiger is understood as a hybrid object, reflecting the complex liminal space between its …

Definitively Unfinished: Abraham Cruzvillegas’ Autoconstrucción, Disability Aesthetics, And Crip Materiality, Benjamin Brobst-Renaud
Definitively Unfinished: Abraham Cruzvillegas’ Autoconstrucción, Disability Aesthetics, And Crip Materiality, Benjamin Brobst-Renaud
Theses
Abraham Cruzvillegas’ Autoconstrucción project is the sculptural manifestation of an approach to artmaking rooted in the self-built and continually evolving forms of the neighborhood where Cruzvillegas grew up (Colonia Ajusco near Mexico City). While it might seem surprising to draw a comparison between the forms of Autoconstrucción and Disability Studies, and while Cruzvillegas does not literally depict the disabled human form, Autoconstrucción resonates deeply with this critical space. Disability Aesthetics, in Tobin Siebers’ formulation, is “an attempt to theorize the representation of disability in modern art and visual culture.” Similarly, Jessica Cooley’s Crip Materiality is a methodology that “locates disability …

Summit Disease: The Ecological Horror Of Empire, Nicholas Moore
Theses
This project focuses on the use of insect imagery in art and media and the theories and concepts that have been instrumental in understanding the cultural and political significance of insect species extinction and decline. I center my work on the concept of ecohorror and highlight several artists whose work depicts insect species and conveys anxieties over ecoprecarity and climate dysfunction. I argue that depictions of insects in art and media can be interpreted in two ways - insects as destructive, monstrous contaminants and insects as constructive, beneficial terraformers - and I rely on Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaa of the Valley …

The Queen Of Heaven: Evelyn De Morgan's Transcendence Of The Soul, Sarah Victoria Eller
The Queen Of Heaven: Evelyn De Morgan's Transcendence Of The Soul, Sarah Victoria Eller
Theses
This thesis examines the religious iconography in three key paintings by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Evelyn De Morgan, The Angel of Death, The Undiscovered Country, and Lux in Tenebris, and explores how they draw on Early Italian Renaissance visual traditions to depict themes of death and the soul’s transcendence. Recent scholarship has assessed De Morgan’s oeuvre through the feminist lens and emphasized her engagement with Spiritualism and the nineteenth-century revival of Swedenborgian philosophy. The Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli has also been recognized as an influential reference for De Morgan, particularly in her mythologically themed works. This study expands on that scope …

Theses
This paper examines Patricia Cronin’s Memorial to a Marriage (2002) as a pivotal work within her artistic catalogue, one that engages deeply with themes of intimacy, identity, and social justice. Created at a time when same-sex marriage was illegal in the United States, Memorial to a Marriage represents Cronin and her partner, feminist artist, Deborah Kass, in a Classical funerary sculpture, reclaiming the tradition of public monuments to center an LGBTQIA+ experience from memory. Through a critical analysis of Memorial to a Marriage within Cronin’s broader artistic practice, this study explores how the sculpture challenges the conventions of public art …
Presence Through Absence: The Ark Of The Covenant And The Aniconic Image Of God In Early Israelite Religious Art, Natalie Rivas
Presence Through Absence: The Ark Of The Covenant And The Aniconic Image Of God In Early Israelite Religious Art, Natalie Rivas
Theses
This thesis investigates the Ark of the Covenant as a paradoxical visual and theological artifact within early Israelite religious art. While the Israelite tradition has long been characterized as aniconic (eschewing anthropomorphic representations of the divine) the Ark occupied a central role in ritual, worship, and religious identity. Prior scholarship has focused either on the Ark’s narrative function in biblical texts or its formal attributes as a cultic object. However, limited attention has been given to how the Ark embodies divine presence through the visual strategy of absence. This study argues that the Ark does not merely avoid figural representation …
