An Electronic Switching System: A Computer Model For Traffic Study, Richard Mcinnes May 1979

An Electronic Switching System: A Computer Model For Traffic Study, Richard Mcinnes

Theses

When designing a telephone switching system, it is necessary to ensure that the system will be able to handle a prescribed quantity of traffic (telephone calls) ; both at any particular instant and during a given period of time. By modelling the switching system with a digital computer, it is possible to determine the traffic handling capability of the system prior to investing in a prototype. In this manner, the system architecture can be altered by merely changing software rather than by rearranging the hardware in a prototype. The savings in terms of time and money provide the stimulus for …

Determining The Modulation Transfer Function Of A Lens-Film Combination Using The Diffraction Effects Of A Coherent Imaging System, Mark Washburn

Theses

This study will present a simple, quick, and inexpensive way to producing sinusoidal test targets, which can then be used in measuring the image quality of a photographic system by way of a coherent system. The sinusoidal test targets will be produced from a series of bar targets using Fourier Optics, and a comparison study will be made between measuring MTF with a laser and a microdensitometer. A defocused target series will also be produced to note the change in MTF of the photographic system. The results indicate that sinusoidal test targets can be made quickly and inexpensively, and then …

Estimation Of Bore Loads In Quenching Of Rings By An Expanding Segmented Die, Harry Dodd May 1979

Estimation Of Bore Loads In Quenching Of Rings By An Expanding Segmented Die, Harry Dodd

Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a method that could be used to estimate the necessary bore load on a part quenched in a quenching machine with an expanding segmented die. Such a method would be of special benefit to gear manufacturers with little quenching experience; and it could also help to greatly reduce or eliminate the very costly trial and error procedure presently used. The method must be simple enough to be used in a production situation. Such a method has been developed for estimating the expander cylinder force required to produce the greatest amount of correction …

A Synchronous Data Compression System, Joseph Calcagno

Theses

This thesis discusses in detail the steps required for the design of a general purpose Data Acquisition System (D.A.S.). This D.A.S. is called a Synchronous Data Compression System (S.D.C.S.) because of some special features. The S.D.C.S. is designed to accept data in analog or digital form. A simple control panel interface is developed, and areas of prime interest such as input/output interface control, analog-to-digital conversion, data compression, and data sampling modes are discussed in detail. ? The primary logic type used for the S.D.C.S. is the CMOS type 4000 Series which was developed by R.C. A.

On The Analysis Of The Timoshenko Beam Theory With And Without Internal Damping, Chinubhai Doshi Feb 1979

On The Analysis Of The Timoshenko Beam Theory With And Without Internal Damping, Chinubhai Doshi

Theses

The Timoshenko beam equation in terms of variable 'wB' is derived where 'wB’ is the deflection due to the bending of a beam. The equation is used to analyze an infinite beam loaded with (i) a concentrated transverse load and (ii) an impulse. It is also shown that the rotatory damping in the equation eliminates the increasing amplitude in the propagation of the bending moment when an impulse is applied to an infinite beam. Also the general procedure for the anlysis of a non-homogeneous equation is explained.

Readability Determination Using Superimposed Random Noise Patterns, Michael Dennison Jan 1979

Readability Determination Using Superimposed Random Noise Patterns, Michael Dennison

Theses

A readability gauge was constructed which objectively gauges the readability of printed matter. In the past such gauges have been produced using photographically created noise. In this study a gauge was constructed using noise generated by a computer. This gauge was evaluated and compared with a gauge produced using the photographic technique of noise generation. The computer generated gauge proved to be as good as the photographic gauge at detecting differences in legibility of printed type. It was also found that the only two causes of variability in the legibility samples used were letter size and letter contrast. Using only …

Modifications Of A Herrnfeld Sensitometer For Interimage Studies, Charles Tobin Jan 1979

Modifications Of A Herrnfeld Sensitometer For Interimage Studies, Charles Tobin

Theses

An available Herrnfeld Sensitometer has been rebuilt and modified to include a six position filter wheel, three narrow band interference filters, a separate D.C. power supply, and a central control panel. The modified sensitometer expedites the single layer exposure of color film. The system accomplishes this by using interference filters whose band-width peaks are matched to the peak spectral sensitivity of each emulsion layer to be exposed. A D.C. power supply has been included to eliminate lamp ripple caused by the oscillations that occur in the A.C. line. In depth experimentation (approximately 20 rolls of film) produced exposures closely approximating …

Theories And Experiments For Determination Of Nonsteady Loads On Turbomachine Blades, James F. Crofoot

Theses

This thesis collates the state of the art for flow induced excitation in a turbomachine stage under subsonic incompressible flow conditions. Theoretical developments are considered first, beginning with the vortex theories of Kemp and Sears, Henderson, Horlock and Holmes. Actuator disk analyses of Whitehead, Henderson and Horlock, and Horlock, Greitzer and Henderson are then considered followed by field theories of Osborne, Warner and Steele. Computer programs based on these theories are described and detailed input/output instructions are given. Results of these theories are compared and the state of the art for theoretical prediction of nonsteady blade loading is discussed. It …

William And Marion Kettner: Brother Bill And The Lass From Tuolumne, Lucille Clark Duvall Jan 1979

William And Marion Kettner: Brother Bill And The Lass From Tuolumne, Lucille Clark Duvall

Theses

The presence and financial impact of the United States Navy upon the city and county of San Diego cannot be disputed. The person responsible in large part for this impact was Congressman William Kettner, whose vision, foresight, and singleminded devotion to the city was legendary in his time. Little is known today of this outstanding citizen save a main thoroughfare, Kettner Boulevard, named in the Congressman's honor in 1921. Yet this man, among other accomplishments, brought the Navy to San Diego, which today claims one out of every three county residents as either active duty, retired, a member of the …

Effect Of Concentration And Ph On Parametric Pumping Separations, Tsu-Kun S. Hsieh Oct 1978

Effect Of Concentration And Ph On Parametric Pumping Separations, Tsu-Kun S. Hsieh

Theses

The technique of parametric pumping represents a new and valuable development in the separation science of proteins. Many conventional protein separation are often processed batchwise. However, parametric pumping offers the possibility of continuous processing; the continuous process provides both the advantages of decreasing the processing time and of minimizing degradation.

Preliminary step testing experiments were conducted to study the equilibrium of protein between the stationary and mobile phase of the sephadex ion exchanger.

It was the purpose of this research to study the feasibility of operating a semi-continuous parametric pump with a sephadex ion exchanger for the separation of a …

The Measurement Of Depolarized Radiation For Monitoring The Mass Concentration Of Particulates, Bruce E. Wilson

Theses

The depolarization of backscattered polarized incident radiation which is expressed as a depolarization ratio was investigated as a means of monitoring the mass concentration of particles in stacks from coal-fired burners. This involved the design of an instrument that would detect small levels of radiation. Two methods were investigated. The first utilized a Gallium Arsenide laser and a silicon detector diode; the second was composed of a xenon flash lamp and a photomultiplier detector tube.

The relationship between the depolarization ratio and the mass concentration of diamond particles in the 0.01 gm/m3 to 0.5 gm/m3 was determined. Diamond …

Interimage Effects And The Mtf Of A Color Reversal Film, Joel Panning Jul 1978

Interimage Effects And The Mtf Of A Color Reversal Film, Joel Panning

Theses

Interimage effects have long been recognized as a factor in the reproduction of color. Reversal materials are no exception and exhibit interimage effects which have previously been revealed through techniques using END analysis. This study presents a method for revealing the presence of interimage effects in a reversal film's Modulation Transfer Function. Utilizing filtering techniques, two dyes of a three color transparency are eliminated from the final image by exposure and development. The remaining single dye image at a specified level is then compared to the corresponding layer and image in a colorimetrically specified neutral. The edge gradient analysis method …

This exposure has a base+fog density of 0.06. Different degrees of simultaneous intensification result in varying values of DQE. The exposure with simultaneous intensification which produced a base+fog of 0.24 gave the maximum sensitometric speed incease by a factor of 1.38 f/stops or 158 %. This exposure varies in DQE …

Management Of Manpower Planning In A Job Shop, John E. Yadlon May 1978

Management Of Manpower Planning In A Job Shop, John E. Yadlon

Theses

The object of any system of manpower planning is to provide a means to optimize manpower utilization. Within this base there is the normal requirement to provide effective utilization of equipment, materials and manpower. In a production type of environment, studies, statistics, research and supervisory manpower are readily available to best optimize manpower planning. In a job shop environment only fragments of these elements are available. Also, the available supervisory time for studies and implementation of research into statistics is usually very small. The net result is that manpower management in a job shop is all too often guessed at. …

The Introduction Of A Computerized Production Control System In A Small Manufacturing Company, Harry Leroy Zimmerly May 1978

The Introduction Of A Computerized Production Control System In A Small Manufacturing Company, Harry Leroy Zimmerly

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to acquaint the reader with the intricacies of introducing a computerized production control system into a small manufacturing company. To do this a hypothetical company was described as it existed with a manual production control system. The information flow of the manual system was described in detail.

Potential computerized production control systems with a shop data collection system were then investigated. A computerized system would expedite information flow, allow rapid assembly tracking, take accurate data and reveal the actual cost (including labor cost) of an assembly. This was done first by examining technical publications. …

Possible Efficiency Improvements In Residential, Gas Fired Furnances, Philip Louis Rinaldi May 1978

Possible Efficiency Improvements In Residential, Gas Fired Furnances, Philip Louis Rinaldi

Theses

This project examines the problem of how to improve energy utilization in a residential space heating environment. Techniques for lowering unit energy consumption are developed and the feasibility of their implementation is discussed.

The project development first establishes the magnitude of the energy wastage problem for the individual consumer and its impact on the national scale. It must be emphasized that these represent two, sometimes distinctly different justifications for reducing energy use in the home. What may be considered only a small personal waste of $50 to $100 per year may indeed--when viewed in aggregate--represent a significant burden on the …

The Slow Settling Of A Sphere In A Viscous Fluid In The Proximity Of A Corner, Joseph Kisutcza May 1978

The Slow Settling Of A Sphere In A Viscous Fluid In The Proximity Of A Corner, Joseph Kisutcza

Theses

Experimental settling velocities for three different sizes of Delrin spheres in Ucon lubricant were determined at 20.2 degrees Celsius in order to confirm the validity of a theoretically derived equation for the settling of a sphere in the proximity of a corner. The experiments were conducted in a wedge shaped column with a circular sector base, filled with the viscous fluid, where the angle of the wedge was varied for experimental purposes. The distance from the wedge apex to the particle was also changed for the different runs.

The experimental data gave a good approximation of the values evaluated by …
