Spectral Analysis Of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses, Amir Hossein Massumkhani Oct 1983

Spectral Analysis Of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses, Amir Hossein Massumkhani

Theses

In this study, the power spectrum density of the brainstem auditory evoked responses is estimated by the method of periodogram. Several techniques for reducing the leakage due to the finite length of data, smoothing the spectrum and reducing the ambiguity in the spectrum due to the resolution are studied. It is shown that a Hamming window reduces the leakage considerably and zero extention of the data to 512 points produces sufficient spectrum bandwidth. Three major peaks are observed at 100, 500, and 1000 Hz which are stable for different evoked responses. In one case with a delayed wave V, the …

Radiation Heat Transfer Analysis Of A Czochralski Furnace With A Radiation Shield, Frederick A. Merz Oct 1983

Radiation Heat Transfer Analysis Of A Czochralski Furnace With A Radiation Shield, Frederick A. Merz

Theses

This paper reports on the radiation heat transfer from the melt in a Czochralski crystal growing furnace in the presence of a radiation shield The change of radiation heat transfer effects three basic areas, the cooling rate of the crystal, the bulk flow and the bulk temperature of the melt. The shield is installed above the melt to inhibit the heat transfer from the melt to the cooling crystal, allowing the crystal to grow 40% faster. Radiation is the primary mode of heat transfer in the furnace where the temperature to grow silicon crystals is around 1773K. The governing equations …

Preparation And Characterization Of Blocked Diisocyanate Monomers For Dental Applications, Stephen Richard Angeli Sep 1983

Preparation And Characterization Of Blocked Diisocyanate Monomers For Dental Applications, Stephen Richard Angeli

Theses

Six new monomers were prepared and characterized. The six monomers are blocked diisocyanate compounds. In the preparation 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate was first blocked with 2=hydroxyethyl methacrylate in the para NCO position. Six different blocking agents were then used to block the ortho NCO in the preparation of the monomers: (1) p-methoxyphenol, (2) m-methoxyphenol, (3) o-methoxyphenol, (4) p-chlorophenol, (5) m-chlorophenol, and (6) o-chlorophenol. The six monomers were characterized by mp, liquid chromatography, IR, NMR, and elemental analysis. All the characterizations show that the monomers are indeed the desired products.

Experimental Investigation Of An Axisymmetric Air Jet Impinging On A Flat Plate, Saibal Basu Sep 1983

Experimental Investigation Of An Axisymmetric Air Jet Impinging On A Flat Plate, Saibal Basu

Theses

Experimental investigation was carried out on a circular, submerged, axisymmetric turbulent air jet-with normal impingement on a smooth, flat, square lucite plate, The flow was considered to be incompressible because the velocity of the jet was not too high, with Mach Number of the order of 0.3. Three nozzle diameters of 0.375" (9,525 mm), 0.250" (6.35 mm) and 0.125" (3.175 mm) were used with Reynolds number ranging from 7,000 to 70,000.

Various flow parameters were measured to obtain the velocity and pressure distributions at the surface of the flat lucite plate and along the centerline of the normal impinging air …

The Quasisteady Approach For Thermal Analysis Of Frost Action Below Refrigerated Warehouses, Milan Kumar Bag Sep 1983

The Quasisteady Approach For Thermal Analysis Of Frost Action Below Refrigerated Warehouses, Milan Kumar Bag

Theses

The quasisteady method of analysis has been used to determine the frost depth below refrigerated warehouses. For the case when the ground temperature is different from phase change temperature, the solution is obtained by numerical integration of the equation governing the phase change process. When the ground temperature approaches the phase change temperature closed form solution is obtained. The results obtained from the quasisteady method compare well with the experimental results. The results presented in this thesis should find use in the design of the refrigerated warehouses in the colder regions of the world.

Data Acquisition And Parameter Identification In Electro-Oculography, Wolfgang Poelzleitner Sep 1983

Data Acquisition And Parameter Identification In Electro-Oculography, Wolfgang Poelzleitner

Theses

Electro-Oculography (EOG) is used in clinical ophthalmology to measure the time response of the corneoretinal potential (CRP) to changes in light intensity. An automatized data acquisition and system modeling link has been developed that significantly reduces processing time presently required for EOG. The data acquisition is performed on a microprocessor based instrument, which supervises the EOG-test, measures the potential and, after completion of the test, transfers the results to a mainframe computer. Parameter identification routines provide graphical representation and mathematical models for the CRP. Both nonlinear curve fitting methods and Least Squares System Identification schemes are used.

Kinetics Of Biodegradation Of Phenol And 2,6-Dichlorophenol, Samir Shrikant Desai Sep 1983

Kinetics Of Biodegradation Of Phenol And 2,6-Dichlorophenol, Samir Shrikant Desai

Theses

Biological removal of phenol up to 600 ppm and 2,6-dichlorophenol up to 20 ppm was studied in a well aerated fill-and-draw reactor of 41 capacity at 26 C using an activated sludge obtained from the municipal treatment plant in Livingston, N.J. Experimental evaluation of kinetic parameters showed that biodegradation of both phenol and 2,6-DCP followed zero-order kinetics. As expected, the lag time for both compounds was considerably reduced when acclimated sludge was used. However, the metabolism of 2,6-DCP was very slow even for preacclimated sludge, requiring about 36 hours to degrade only 15 ppm.. This was markedly improved by the …

Mathematical Model Of Temperature Profiles And Coking In A Crude Oil Heater Tube, Joseph C. Polimeni Sep 1983

Mathematical Model Of Temperature Profiles And Coking In A Crude Oil Heater Tube, Joseph C. Polimeni

Theses

A mathematical model to predict temperature profiles and coking of crude oil in furnace tubes is presented. The model assumes that the coking mechanism is due to a reaction in the laminar sublayer, whose rate depends upon the temperature profile. That profile is obtained by a numerical solution of the appropriate transport equations, with velocity profiles that may be laminar or turbulent, and including the temperature dependence of the crude oil properties. In addition, velocity and temperature profiles were adjusted when necessary to ensure closure of the heat and material balances. As a by-product of this study, a correction was …

The Lewis-Matheson Method On Computer, William Raymond Castner Sep 1983

The Lewis-Matheson Method On Computer, William Raymond Castner

Theses

Lewis and Matheson, in the early 1930's, developed a manual calculation technique for the solution of multicomponent distillation problems. The object of this study was to see if there would be any advantage to using the Lewis-Matheson method, once incorporated onto a computer, over current multicomponent distillation solution techniques. The immediate advantage of using the L-M technique is that it requires fewer preliminary calculations than other computer methods. It was found that the L-M technique uses about half the execution time of a typical Newton-Raphson program, while using only one tenth the computer core (memory). This was not intended to …

Design Of Hvac Duct Stiffeners With Tie Rods, Raviraj Somayaji Sep 1983

Design Of Hvac Duct Stiffeners With Tie Rods, Raviraj Somayaji

Theses

"HVAC" ducts are made of thin gauge sheet metal. They are usually reinforced with transverse stiffeners. These stiffeners are usually made of hot rolled steel sections, such as equal leg angles or channels.

When the size of an "HVAC" duct exceeds 72 inches, additional stiffeners in the axial direction are used to reinforce the duct sheets. Tie rods are also installed, between the axial stiffeners, across the duct cross-section, to support these stiffeners. The "HVAC" ducts are subjected to either external or internal pressure. The transverse stiffeners have one or two tie rods installed, and they become statically indeterminate structures. …

On The Stability Of Columns Of Varying Cross-Sections, Vallanore K. Suresh Sep 1983

On The Stability Of Columns Of Varying Cross-Sections, Vallanore K. Suresh

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to study the stability of columns with axially varying cross-sections using approximate Methods. Much of the work has been done on the stability of the columns by using various techniques. This study, in part, verifies some of the above theories by Numerical Computations. Solutions for the optimal dimensions of columns to withstand a particular load without buckling are shown for a variety of columns, viz.,column bounded by linear taper, paraboloid of revolution and in general a column bounded by a curve of n'th degree.

The problem of columns of varying cross-sections can be solved by …

Chebyshev Method Solution Of The Time-Dependent Transport Equation To Describe The Scattering Of Gaussian Plane Wave Pulses, Jonqpyng Yuan Sep 1983

Chebyshev Method Solution Of The Time-Dependent Transport Equation To Describe The Scattering Of Gaussian Plane Wave Pulses, Jonqpyng Yuan

Theses

Millimeter-wave propagation in vegetation (forests) is studied using transport theory. A periodic sequence of gaussian plane wave pulses is assumed to enter a forest. The forest is first modeled as a slab and then treated as a half-space by letting the thickness of the slab go to infinity. The forest is assumed to consist of a random distribution of particles which scatters energy isotropically. The time dependent equation of radiative transfer in such a scattering and absorbing medium is solved by using Chebyshev polynomials as basis functions for series expansions of the diffuse or incoherent intensity. This choice of basis …

An Experimental Investigation Of Round Normal Impinging Jet Of Water, Dipendra Saharay Sep 1983

An Experimental Investigation Of Round Normal Impinging Jet Of Water, Dipendra Saharay

Theses

The various flow parameters of round jets of water impinging normally on a flat plate are measured experimentally. The velocity and pressure distribution along the axis of the jet at various sections of the jet parallel to the horizontal lucite striking plate and along the impinging surface was found. The nozzles used were 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch in diameter. The Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter was 15,000 to 25,000. The distance from the jet origin to the deflecting boundary ranged from thrice the diameter of the jet to twelve and sixteen times the diameter of the jet. …

Lifo Perishable Inventory (S,S,T) Model And Its Related Discount Policy, Yuan-Shyi Chiu Sep 1983

Lifo Perishable Inventory (S,S,T) Model And Its Related Discount Policy, Yuan-Shyi Chiu

Theses

The objective of this thesis is to determine the optimal (s,S,T) ordering policy for a perishable inventory system with a fixed product lifetime and Poisson demand. The simulation technique is utilized to identify the optimal ordering policy which minimizes the total cost consisted of ordering, holding, shortage, and outdate costs. Upon the establishment of the optimal ordering policy, a discount policy on the outdating items is proposed to provide decision maker(s) with tradeoff between the profit and the average outdate cost.

The computer programs written in FORTRAN are designed to generate the optimal (s,S,T) ordering policy of any above-mentioned inventory …

Deposition Of Particles In Horozontal Parallel Plate Channel Due To Image Charge, Inertia, Viscosity And Gravity, Chi-Young Chu Sep 1983

Deposition Of Particles In Horozontal Parallel Plate Channel Due To Image Charge, Inertia, Viscosity And Gravity, Chi-Young Chu

Theses

This investigation was made to determine the effect on the deposition of particle in a horizontal parallel-plate channel due to the influences of image charge, viscosity, inertia and gravity. The flow considered was lamina, incompressible and steady. The flow patterns considered were uniform and fully developed with symmetry about the axis of the channel.

The governing equations derived for a particle were based on Newton's Second Law of motion. Since the resulting governing equations are linear second order differential equations, Runge-Kutta algorithm is used to solve the problem and graphical techniques is used to interpret the results of the numerical …

A Study Of The Halftone Dot Characteristics Of Rapid Access Halftones, John Gilliatt Sep 1983

A Study Of The Halftone Dot Characteristics Of Rapid Access Halftones, John Gilliatt

Theses

Rapid access processing is a photographic processing method that combines high temperature processing and high energy developing agents to obtain very short induction periods, and thus, reduced processing times. In order to obtain maximum quality from the process, the rapid access halftone percent dot areas must be correctly evaluated according to established aim points. Traditional evaluation methods, either visual or instrumental, produce errors. These errors are the partial result of the unique dot characteristics of the process. These characteristics include soft, fringed dots; dots with low Dmax, found particularily in the shadow areas; loss of dot area on the tips …

Second Order Coherent Power Spectra, Brian A. Gorin Aug 1983

Second Order Coherent Power Spectra, Brian A. Gorin

Theses

The relationship between second order stochastic processes and coherent power spectra are explored for developed grain size frequency distributions of silver halide emulsion/developer combinations. Although Wiener spectra represent incoherent power spectra, the coherent case has been unresolved due to the difficulty of filtering the optical system effect. The emulsion plates were exposed with a uniform irradiance distribution from an incoherent tungsten source to create a series of uniform density samples. Conventional processing chemistry is utilized with substitution of different developer types, from predominantly physical development to direct chemical development. The exposed and processed density samples were liquid gated with refractive …

A Constant Force Bicycle Transmission, Thomas Chase Aug 1983

A Constant Force Bicycle Transmission, Thomas Chase

Theses

A prototype design for a human powered automatic transmission intended for use on an ordinary touring bicycle is presented. The transmission is intended to automatically adjust the gearing of the bicycle to maintain an optimum pedal force, regardless of the current riding conditions. Therefore, the transmission eliminates the need for the cyclist to manually adjust the bicycle gearing. The entire transmission is a self-contained unit designed to bolt onto the rear wheel of an otherwise unmodified 27-inch bicycle. The transmission combines a unique adaptation of a commercially popular continuously variable traction drive with a totally mechanical integral feedback controller. The …

Technology In The Late Twentieth Century: Humanism Versus Technocracy, A Philosophical Inquiry, Peter Moss Handler

Theses

As an artist in metal living and working in the last part of the twentieth century, I feel it to be important that my work relate to this specific period of time. That is, to look where we are going becomes more important than where we have been. The most powerful single influence on where we are going, in my judgment, is technology. The images of technology, not the things of it, become my starting place. My intent, however, is not merely to celebrate technology. That is an uncritical attitude.

Mathematical Modeling Of The Unsteady State Glucose And Insulin Concentrations In Blood For Normal Subjects And Diabetics, Tung Shih

Theses

A mathematical model of the blood-glucose regulatory system has been developed. This model describes an oral glucose tolerance test adequately and simulates the behavior of the real physiological system using computer techniques.

Regression of the rate constants involved have been effected by conforming the theoretical functions to the data from glucose tolerance test in nonobese normal subjects, obese normal subjects, nonobese mild diabetics, obese mild diabetics, nonobese moderate diabetics and obese moderate diabetics measured by continuous sampling after oral ingestion. Most of the data were conformed within the limits of experimental error. The result of optimal parameters lead to a …

Computer Simulation Of Cavity Filling During Injection Molding Process, Sumit Banerjee May 1983

Computer Simulation Of Cavity Filling During Injection Molding Process, Sumit Banerjee

Theses

A numerical technique is proposed for the simulation of cavity filling process during injection molding of glass-bead filled polypropylene. The mold cavity is of cylindrical shape. Marker And Cell (MAC) method is utilized for solving the transient flow phenomena, after a mathematical simulation of the flow model is carried out by using the relevant continuity and-momentum equations governing the system. The complexity of the equations involved, results in the simplifying assumption of incompressible and isothermal flow process. A computer program is written on the basis of finite-difference equations developed during the application of MAC method under the prevailing conditions.
