Spectral Analysis Of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses, Amir Hossein Massumkhani
Spectral Analysis Of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses, Amir Hossein Massumkhani
Theses
In this study, the power spectrum density of the brainstem auditory evoked responses is estimated by the method of periodogram. Several techniques for reducing the leakage due to the finite length of data, smoothing the spectrum and reducing the ambiguity in the spectrum due to the resolution are studied. It is shown that a Hamming window reduces the leakage considerably and zero extention of the data to 512 points produces sufficient spectrum bandwidth. Three major peaks are observed at 100, 500, and 1000 Hz which are stable for different evoked responses. In one case with a delayed wave V, the …
Preparation And Characterization Of Blocked Diisocyanate Monomers For Dental Applications, Stephen Richard Angeli
Preparation And Characterization Of Blocked Diisocyanate Monomers For Dental Applications, Stephen Richard Angeli
Theses
Six new monomers were prepared and characterized. The six monomers are blocked diisocyanate compounds. In the preparation 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate was first blocked with 2=hydroxyethyl methacrylate in the para NCO position. Six different blocking agents were then used to block the ortho NCO in the preparation of the monomers: (1) p-methoxyphenol, (2) m-methoxyphenol, (3) o-methoxyphenol, (4) p-chlorophenol, (5) m-chlorophenol, and (6) o-chlorophenol. The six monomers were characterized by mp, liquid chromatography, IR, NMR, and elemental analysis. All the characterizations show that the monomers are indeed the desired products.
Kinetics Of Biodegradation Of Phenol And 2,6-Dichlorophenol, Samir Shrikant Desai
Kinetics Of Biodegradation Of Phenol And 2,6-Dichlorophenol, Samir Shrikant Desai
Theses
Biological removal of phenol up to 600 ppm and 2,6-dichlorophenol up to 20 ppm was studied in a well aerated fill-and-draw reactor of 41 capacity at 26 C using an activated sludge obtained from the municipal treatment plant in Livingston, N.J. Experimental evaluation of kinetic parameters showed that biodegradation of both phenol and 2,6-DCP followed zero-order kinetics. As expected, the lag time for both compounds was considerably reduced when acclimated sludge was used. However, the metabolism of 2,6-DCP was very slow even for preacclimated sludge, requiring about 36 hours to degrade only 15 ppm.. This was markedly improved by the …
Synthesis Of Mono- And Dialkyl Catechol Ethers, Sujitra Dhumrongvaraporn
Synthesis Of Mono- And Dialkyl Catechol Ethers, Sujitra Dhumrongvaraporn
Theses
Estabrook and coworkers have developed an enzymatic analysis for the oxidation of catechol depicted in Figure 1b. The rate of this oxidation (k2) is so high that the
[Figure 1.]
rate of the O-dealkylation reactions of monocatechol ethers (k1) may perhaps be conveniently followed by monitoring catechol concentrations as it is produced. That is with k2 >> k1, a combined dealkylation and oxidation enzymatic system might be developed to provide kinetic data on step 1, ie. on k1 values.
With this in mind, a series of appropriate substrates ie. O-monoalkyl catechol ethers needed …
Mathematical Modeling Of The Unsteady State Glucose And Insulin Concentrations In Blood For Normal Subjects And Diabetics, Tung Shih
Theses
A mathematical model of the blood-glucose regulatory system has been developed. This model describes an oral glucose tolerance test adequately and simulates the behavior of the real physiological system using computer techniques.
Regression of the rate constants involved have been effected by conforming the theoretical functions to the data from glucose tolerance test in nonobese normal subjects, obese normal subjects, nonobese mild diabetics, obese mild diabetics, nonobese moderate diabetics and obese moderate diabetics measured by continuous sampling after oral ingestion. Most of the data were conformed within the limits of experimental error. The result of optimal parameters lead to a …
Computer Simulation Of The Human Hypophysial-Ovarian System, Robert Charles Blencowe
Computer Simulation Of The Human Hypophysial-Ovarian System, Robert Charles Blencowe
Theses
In order to more adequately simulate the human pituitary-ovarian cycle further refinements were made to the original Bogumil and Feng computer models. This involved the inclusion of equations which mathematically describe the peripheral conversion of prehormones and a subroutine showing the effect of plasma proteins, TeBG, CBG, and albumin on the total concentration of estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone and estrone.
Once the models were functioning properly, values for the normal state and for the disease condition, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCO), were obtained. In most cases there exists good agreement between the results reported in the literature and those generated …
An Experimental System For Observation Of The Rat Coronary Microcirculation Using Digital Image Processing, Wolfgang Braun
An Experimental System For Observation Of The Rat Coronary Microcirculation Using Digital Image Processing, Wolfgang Braun
Theses
A system was constructed which allows direct observation of the coronary microcirculation of the beating rat heart. An EKG triggered strobe is used on the microscope light source to "stop" the action of the beating heart so the surface microvessels can be observed di rectly under the microscope. Experimental results are recorded on videotape and played back for frame-by-frame analysis of the data using digital Image processing techniques such as digital filtering, image extraction, image enhancement and edge detection.
The application of image enhancement techniques (high order and low order enhancement methods ) as well as edge detection using a …
Computer Simulation Of The Respiratory System, Bruce Diner
Computer Simulation Of The Respiratory System, Bruce Diner
Theses
The respiratory system was simulated utilizing a series of three models, each more complex than the previous. The first model simulated the respiratory system as a two compartment model driven by carbon dioxide concentration. The second model, also a two compartment model, simulated periodic breathing while the third model is a three compartment model and simulates acid-base balance disturbances.
In this study, the effects of hyperthyroidism and respiratory center depression on respiration premeasured utilizing the models to obtain data and then compare the results to known physiologic data.
A Study Of Personal Conflict And Stress Among Engineering Personnel As Influenced By Corporate Policy, Stated And Unstated, Richard Brian Gordon
A Study Of Personal Conflict And Stress Among Engineering Personnel As Influenced By Corporate Policy, Stated And Unstated, Richard Brian Gordon
Theses
The following concepts are being challenged: That organizations are efficient, well-managed, and intelligent: that if one is to believe in any sort of authority, one must first accept the notion that it truly knows best and that it is not only competent, but well-intentioned; that organizations exist for the benefit of their employees and customers; that organizations reward dedication, competence, and performance: that if the organization is to grow it needs loyal sacrificing people; that organizations are dynamic and receptive to change; that if the employee is discouraged, do not worry, for tomorrow will be better; that to be useful …
Managing In The Technical Sales Arena, Robert Munro
Managing In The Technical Sales Arena, Robert Munro
Theses
The major objective of this thesis is to portray the role of a Field Engineer for a major manufacturer of electrical distribution and control equipment. In so doing, it should represent a reasonable facsimile of what a sales manager of a large Field Office, comprised of approximately twelve Field Engineers, would encounter in his supervisory capacity. As such, it should provide information for those interested in entering and hoping to manage in technical sales career.
While much of the information was derived from books, periodicals, and conversations with people associated with the electrical industry, the major portion of the work …
Automated Instrumentation System For Studies Of Metabolic Rates In Rats, Suhas P. Pathak
Automated Instrumentation System For Studies Of Metabolic Rates In Rats, Suhas P. Pathak
Theses
The task of the instrumentation system is to measure the respiratory exchange in rats in a controlled experiment. Air is drawn at a predeter-mined rate in and out of rat chambers. The proportion of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the ensuing air indicates the respiratory rate of the rat. The entire operation is controlled by a microcomputer whose most important functions are: to direct the flow of air through the rat chambers by switching valves; and to collect data about the percentages of gases in question.
Thus with the help of a computer it is possible to monitor and control …
The Hydroxide-, Chymotrypsin-, And Blood-Catalyzed Hydrolysis Of A Series Of Sodium 4-Acyloxy-3-Nitrobenzene Sulfonates, Louis E. Rinaldi
The Hydroxide-, Chymotrypsin-, And Blood-Catalyzed Hydrolysis Of A Series Of Sodium 4-Acyloxy-3-Nitrobenzene Sulfonates, Louis E. Rinaldi
Theses
The kinetics of the hydrolysis of a series of water-soluble aromatic esters (sodium 4-acyloxy-3-nitrobenzene sulfonates) were analyzed in order to determine the effect of a variety of substitutions (on the α-carbon of the acid group) upon the rate of reaction.
The following was observed. That (a), the hydroxide catalyzed and water dependent hydrolyses of these esters are slower for larger substituents and faster for smaller ones. That (b), the chymotrypsin catalytic hydrolysis of these esters shows an acylation reaction step which occurs at a rate greater than deacylation for larger substituents, and at approximately equal rates for smaller ones. Furthermore, …
Form, Donna Colebeck
Form, Donna Colebeck
Theses
The body of work in this thesis embodies an exploration on form. My interpretation has primarily dealt with form as it relates to hollowware, both functional and non-functional in nature. The hollowware pieces maintain relatively simple shapes with smooth contours, linear dimensions and movement. The linear elements have opened different interpretations so that the work may extend and expand the forms beyond the geometric shapes to allow new contours and directions . Various transitory lines, subtle curves and gradual taperings all work to enhance gentle flow, movement and elegance within each piece.
The Effects Of Impurities In Papain On Triarylmethane Photochromism, Jon H. Austin
The Effects Of Impurities In Papain On Triarylmethane Photochromism, Jon H. Austin
Theses
The effects of the enzyme papain on triarylmethane photochromism were investigated. The interaction between papain solutions and triarylmethane dyes was measured using difference spectroscopy and relative equilibrium constants were calculated. The effects of papain on Malachite Green photochromic solutions were also measured. Both crude and commercially available purified papain were tested. Crude papain bleached triarylmethane dyes and reduced fatigue in triarylmethane photochromic solutions. Purified papain did not bleach the dyes and did not have a significant effect on fatigue in photochromic solutions. It was not as soluble in the alcohol based solvent as the crude enzyme was. It is believed …
Investigation Of Resolution Loss In Contact Exposure Of Transparent Electrophotographic Films, Thomas Charles Sutter
Investigation Of Resolution Loss In Contact Exposure Of Transparent Electrophotographic Films, Thomas Charles Sutter
Theses
A study was performed to determine the nature of the effects causing resolution loss in contact exposure Transparent Electrophotographic (TEP) films. Target and TEP film characteristics were varied and resolution was measured under magnification. Results indicated that the factors responsible for resolution loss included the grain structure of the original target, moisture content of the target emulsion, and surface charge of the target. No conclusions could be made for the effect of TEP photoconductor coating thickness.

A Study Of Comparable Identifiably Predictions Of Some Resolving Power Targets By Fourier Spectra Considerations, James Greene
A Study Of Comparable Identifiably Predictions Of Some Resolving Power Targets By Fourier Spectra Considerations, James Greene
Theses
This report documents a study conducted to examine the correlation between identification thresholds and difference spectra of some resolving power target characters. The experiment included the USAF Tri-bar target, the RIT Alpha-numeric Resolving Power Target, and a set of targets called the Granger Modified Tri-bar targets. Assuming that target identification is a filtering process and primarily a function of its frequency spectrum, this study began with a prediction of targets that would have equal identification thresholds from difference spectra considerations. Target images were viewed at various sizes to confirm/refute the original hypothesis. The USAF targets demonstrated adequate control of experimental …

Means Of Lowering The Contrast Of Association Product Printing Plates, Ming-Hwa Wang
Means Of Lowering The Contrast Of Association Product Printing Plates, Ming-Hwa Wang
Theses
The Association Product is a photosensitive coating for continuous-tone litho plates (It can also be used as a plate coating for halftone printing). It consists of phenolic resin and poly(ethylene oxide) and is photosensitized by a water soluble sensitizer. Continuous-tone lithography has better quality potential than the halftone process. Because the halftone process converts the continuous-tone image of the original into small dots of varying sizes, it thus inherently degrades the image quality and adds time and material costs in screening. The water soluble sensitizer converts the hydrophilic Association Product to an oleophilic state in direct proportion to exposing energy, …

The Effect Of Ink/Fountain Solution Emulsion Of Paper Permanence, Thomas H. Spotts
The Effect Of Ink/Fountain Solution Emulsion Of Paper Permanence, Thomas H. Spotts
Theses
The permanence of printed documents and books appears to be primarily dependent on paper stability. Other researchers implicate pH as a major factor in the deterioration rate of paper and acidity as major the cause of this deterioration. During the lithographic printing process, ink is in direct contact with fountain solution, which can be acidic or alkaline. Fountain solution is a mixture of water and chemicals used to keep the non-image areas of a lithographic plate moist. On press the intimate contact of ink with fountain solution creates a fountain solution-in-ink emulsion. The emulsion used here is a stable suspension …

Development Of A Quantitative Spectrophotometric Assay For Lectins, Kim E. Goppert
Development Of A Quantitative Spectrophotometric Assay For Lectins, Kim E. Goppert
Theses
A new quantitative spectrophotometric assay for lectins has been developed. It involves mixing a copolymer with a lectin solution and measuring the absorbance change as a function of time as the resulting solution becomes turbid. The slope obtained could be correlated quantitatively with the amount of lectin present. The assay has sensitivity problems at low lectin concentrations and also a reproducibility problem. More study is required in these two areas.
