The purpose of this study was to investigate secondary science and social studies teachers' attitudes and behaviors regarding solid waste recycling and classroom instruction in recycling, moreover, environmental education. The survey 's population was randomly selected from St. Louis County secondary schools. The study documented the need for control of solid waste through recycling and t he need to educate to improve recycling. It provided an extensive review of the literature on recycling instruction as well as classroom recycling activities and lesson plans.

DTIC and BCNU have been demonstrated to have enhanced chemotherapeutic effects in mice bearing Bl6 mouse melanoma cells. The order of administration seems to be important in maintaining optimum effects. This was shown is a study by Hill et al. (unpublished).

In the present study, mouse melanoma cells, Bl6CL4, were treated with either DTIC or BCNU. The drug was allowed to remain on the cells for 2, 3, or 4 days. A separation process based on a new class of membrane ( the electromembrane ) was studied. Experiments were performed using three types of electromembrane to remove copper ions from aqueous solution. A Separation Cell Unit was designed and set up to investigate the transport of copper ions through the electromembranes under the influence of both an electric field and a concentration gradient. Fluxes achieved were much greater than those reported for other membrane processes, and the energy consumption was one half that of electrolytic deposition.

The biological degradation of phenol, O-chlorophenol, and 2,6-dichlorophenol was studied at room temperature in aerated 5 liter batch reactors using mixed liquor from Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners Plant (Newark, New Jersey). From the concentration versus time data, kinetic rate constants were determined for phenol (at 100 ppm), 2'-chlorophenol (at 20 ppm), and 2,6-dichlorophenol (at 10 ppm). Air stripping and adsorption were determined to be insignificant removal mechanisms for the three compounds studied.

Male Sprague Dawley rats (250g) were exposed to benzyl chloride vapor at a concentration of 220 ppm for 6 hours. During inhalation, the blood benzyl chloride concentration increased to reach a steady state level of 9-10 ug/ml between 4 and 6 hours of exposure. A small concentration of benzyl chloride (0.86 ug/ml) was present in the blood four hours after the termination of exposure. The absorption half life was 0.53 hours (0.39-0.81) and the elimination half life was l.12 hour (0.93-l.40).

Two dimensional diffusion of macromolecules through the interstitial in the hamster cheek pouch was studied with intravital fluorescence microscopy. After topical application of Bradykinin, the movement of Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled dextrans of average molecular weight 150,000 daltons (Dextran 150) was recorded on videotape which latter was played back frame-by-frame for analysis by digital image processing. Leakage of macromolecules in response to topical application of Bradykinin occurs at discrete leakage site in post caplillary venules of 15-25 um diameter, rather than in the capillary themselves. A total of thirty chemostat runs were evaluated for steady state biomass concentration of L. brevis and arginine deiminase activity at dilution rates ranging from 0.022 to 0.1.07 h^-1 for a substrate feed consisting of 1.0% glucose and 0.5% arginine (w/v). Biomass concentration and enzyme activity responses were also evaluated for variations in glucose concentration from 0.05% to 1.5% and variations in arginine concentrations from 0.25% to 1.0% at a constant dilution rate (0.06 h^-1).

Commercially available aromatic diamines such as 4,4'-diamino diphenyl ether and 4,4'-diamino diphenyl methylene were treated with N-acetylsulf anilyl chloride to give the amino-sulf onamido-acetanilide derivatives. These derivatives were treated with 6 M hydrochloric acid to give the diamine monomers containing a preformed sulfonamide linkage. These monomers were polymerized with various diacid chlorides using a low temperature solution technique. Polymerizations using the Yamazaki reaction have also been investigated. The polymers obtained were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry.

This study was designed to investigate whether early school entrance affected the level of standardized test performance as a child progressed through school.

It was hypothesized that students' standardized test scores would correlate significantly with the age at which they entered school, that the standardized test scores of early-entrants would be significantly lower than middle-entrants and late-entrants, that standardized test scores of middle-entrants would be significantly lower than those of late-entrants, and that there would be a significant difference between the standardized test scores of girls and boys whose chronological ages were similar at the time they began attending school. …

The reactions of chloroform and trichloroethylene with hydrogen in the temperature range 550 to 1000°C were studied using tubular flow reactors of varying diameters. The residence time range was from 0.05 to 3.0 seconds.Two different concentrations of the chlorinated species were used, each with hydrogen in large excess. Flat temperature profiles (+/- 5°C) were achieved over 80 to 85 per cent of the 45 cm long reaction zone, with inlet gases preheated to about 400°C.

The biodegradation of phenol and O-chlorophenol was studied in six-liter batch reactors, using a municipal mixed liquor (from the Livingston, NJ treatment plant) that had not previously been exposed to either of the substrates. In addition, three commercial microbial preparations: BI-CHEM (Sybron), Hydrobac (Polybac), and LLMO (General Environmental Science), were tested alone and in combination with the municipal mixed liquor.

This study explores the emotional and psychological reactions of children to residential treatment centers, focusing on themes of separation anxiety, punishment, and the role of early attachment disruptions. Barbara Jane Uhl investigates how emotionally disturbed children perceive their institutional environments compared to children from public schools. Drawing from object relations theory and existing research on institutionalization, the study hypothesizes that children in residential treatment settings often internalize feelings of guilt and punishment as a result of separation from their families and the impersonal nature of institutional structures.

There were 52 volunteers at the Fitness Festival who completed the questionnaire. An experimental unit was built to minimize vibration during measurement of linewidths on integrated circuit photomasks. Linewidths in the range of 0.522 microns to 12.076 microns were measured with the Nikon LASER scanning system. Optical Specialties Inc. VLS-I video system, Nikon Micro Pattern Analyzer slit-scanning system, and the experimental unit. Average variances of 0.0096, 0.0164, 0.0377, and 0.3627 were calculated for each system respectively. The variances were compared using an F-test with the result that each system was significantly different for each linewidth. The models for surface /internal latent-image formation by J.F. Hamilton and others were qualitatively investigated. Techniques were also developed to precipitate core-shell emulsions. Although the emulsion precipitation system employed was not highly stable, the major aspects of surface/ internal latent-image competition were successfully demonstrated. It was found that the level of surface /internal latent-image competition has a significant effect on the photographic response of core-shell emulsions.
