Self-Esteem And Alcohol Involvement Among Female College Students: Is There A Relationship?, Marla Stephanie Slack

Theses

Although current research has studied t he relationship between self-esteem and alcohol involvement among college students, the results have been inconclusive. The majority of studies have used either the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory or the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale to establish the level of self-esteem in their subjects. This study attempted to further previous research by using an alternative measure of self-esteem. Undergraduate female students (under the legal drinking age of 21) were randomly selected from Introductory Psychology classes at a midwestern university. Each subject completed the Self- Esteem Rating Scale (SERS) and the Index of Alcohol Involvement (IAI ) instrument . …

The Mental Approach To The Game Of Baseball: A Handbook For The Player/Coach, Timothy P. Nihart

Theses

This thesis will focus on the mental attitude required to succeed in athletics, in particular baseball. Stressing the link between the mind and the body, this paper intends to make practical applications for both coaches and players.

Research as shown that in communication information is transmitted through two primary inconsistent and unbalanced methods: content and emotions . Due to the often interaction of coaches in communicating with their players, there is a large margin of error, lost information, from the transmission by the coaches to the reception by the players. It 1s necessary, thus, to explore the link between the …

The Effects Of Self-Esteem On Reading And Math Achievement In Third And Fifth Grade Students, Carol Ann Beatty Jan 1998

The Effects Of Self-Esteem On Reading And Math Achievement In Third And Fifth Grade Students, Carol Ann Beatty

Theses

This study examined whether self-esteem had a significant effect on reading and math achievement. Data were collected from 90 third and fifth grade students in a Midwestern, suburban elementary school. Results of a self-esteem test (Piers-Harris Children's Self-concept Scale) were correlated to standardized reading and math test scores (Missouri Mastery and Achievement Test, MMA T). The results indicated a direct correlation. The variation in the level of self-esteem scores suggests a parallel relationship with reading and math achievement scores. The direct correlation demonstrates if one score (self-esteem) is high, then the other score (reading or math) will more than likely …

Composition And Environmental Assessment Of Soils From United Arab Emirates, Torfa Alsheba Khames Alsheriani

Theses

The study focuses on the mineral and chemical composition, the textural characters and environmental assessment of some soils from the UAE. About forty soil samples were collected from AI Ain District and the Eastern Mountain District. Soils in AI Ain and its suburb are strongly influenced by the aeolian sedimentation, while those of the Eastern Mountain are formed in narrow valleys strikingly close to ophiolitic hinterland.

The studied soils· are remarkably impoverished in clay size fraction and clay minerals as well. This is due to the impeded chemical weathering under the prevailing arid climate. Corroborative techniques including X-ray diffraction, infrared …

Development And Validation Of Flow-Injection (Continuous-Flow) Elisa Techniques., Declan Gerard Spillane Jan 1998

Development And Validation Of Flow-Injection (Continuous-Flow) Elisa Techniques., Declan Gerard Spillane

Theses

A flow-through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed based on affinity chromatography using the determination of ferritin in serum as a model system. In this method, samples and standards are introduced to separate columns containing immobilised anti-ferritin antibody, and antigen bound by solid-phase antibody is subsequently detected using an anti-ferritin-alkaline phosphatase conjugate. To detect immobilised label, p-nitrophenyl phosphate is added and product is developed in the column at room temperature. Following elution of product from the column, the absorbance is measured and the columns are regenerated using a low pH elution. The final developed system requires approximately 1.5 h for the …

Molecular Analysis Of The Factor V-Leiden Mutation In A Cardiac Transplant Patient Population, Caroline Maher Jan 1998

Molecular Analysis Of The Factor V-Leiden Mutation In A Cardiac Transplant Patient Population, Caroline Maher

Theses

Venous thrombosis is a serious health problem affecting 1 in 1000 individuals annually. Until recently the pathogenic factors underlying thrombosis were associated with genetic defects in protein C, protein S and antithrombin III. However these were recognised in fewer than 5-10% of thrombotic patients. A breakthrough was made with the discovery of activated protein C resistance (APCr) which is associated in 90% of cases v/herein a G-->A transition in the factor V gene results in an abnormal molecule, Factor V Leiden. APCr is a major risk factor for thrombosis being present in 20-60% of thrombotic patients. Recently a G-^A …

Biodegradation Of Naphthalene Using Pseudomonas Putida (Atcc 17484) In Batch And Chemostat Reactors, Jay Boyd Best

Theses

Kinetic experiments were conducted using Pseudomonas putida (ATCC 17484) to determine the rate of growth when naphthalene was provided as a sole carbon source in suspended biomass systems. Batch and chemostat reactors were used under three sets of conditions: non-aerated, aerated at 29.5° C, and aerated at 25.5° C. A number of concentrations were tested under each set of conditions. Data regression was used to determine parameters for Monod (non-inhibitory), Andrews (inhibitory), and zero-order kinetics. Although the Andrews fit of the data provided a slightly lower sum-of-squares error (SSE), the amount of data scatter and the weak inhibition made the …

Mixed Metal Removal And Recovery By Hollow Fiber Membrane-Based Extractive Adsorber, Ramprakash Chilukuri

Theses

The feasibility and efficiency of simultaneous removal of multiple cations as well as anionic heavy metals from wastewater into a mixed extractant kept stagnant on the shell side of a 2-fiber-set hollow fiber membrane extractor operated as a fixed bed adsorber was explored. The novel extracting solvent was a mixture of an acidic or chelating extracting agent for one or more cations and a basic extracting agent, e.g., trioctylamine (TOA) for extracting anions; both were dissolved in the same diluent kerosene for simultaneous and synergistic extraction of cations and anions. In the stripping part of the fixed bed operation, alkaline …

Testing Statistical Significance In Sequence Classification Algorithms, Tom Tien-Hua Shih Oct 1997

Testing Statistical Significance In Sequence Classification Algorithms, Tom Tien-Hua Shih

Theses

Multiple sequence alignment has proven to be a successful method of representing and organizing of protein sequence data. It is crucial to medical researches on the structure and function of proteins.

There have been numerous tools published on how to abstract meaningful relationship from an unknown sequence and a set of known sequences. One study used a method for discovering active motifs in a set of related protein sequences. These are meaningful knowledge abstracted from the known protein database since most protein families are characterized by multiple local motifs. Another study abstracts knowledge regarding the input sequence using a preconstructed …

Algorithms And Tools For Splicing Junction Donor Recognition In Genomic Dna Sequences, Maisheng Yin Oct 1997

Algorithms And Tools For Splicing Junction Donor Recognition In Genomic Dna Sequences, Maisheng Yin

Theses

The consensus sequences at splicing junctions in genomic DNA are required for pre-mRNA breaking and rejoining which must be carried out precisely. Programs currently available for identification or prediction of transcribed sequences from within genomic DNA are far from being powerful enough to elucidate genomic structure completely[4]. In this research, we develop a degenerate pattern match algorithm for 5' splicing site (Donor Site) recognition.. Using the Motif models we developed, we can mine out the degenerate pattern information from the consensus splicing junction sequences. Our experimental results show that, this algorithm can correctly recognize 93% of the total donor sites …

The Socio-Economic Role Of Crude Oil In The United States And Finland, Judith Deak Kallo Oct 1997

The Socio-Economic Role Of Crude Oil In The United States And Finland, Judith Deak Kallo

Theses

Running a company requires daily assessment of opportunities, risks and trends which involve socio-economic changes and scientific uncertainties. Technical-material resources play a major role in the uncertainty of corporate economics. Overproduction combined with increasing efficiencies have resulted in accelerated use and misuse of resources, accompanied by socio-ecological abuses related to wars and pollution. A significant current threat is global warming. As a result of this global challenge several companies have moved towards a more comprehensive environmental business management model. This is seen in corporate management initiating life cycle assessment and risk analysis of their products.

The socio-economic role of crude …

Removal And Recovery Of Vocs And Oils From Surfactant-Flushed Recovered Water By Membrane Permeation, Ashish Nagnath Saraf Oct 1997

Removal And Recovery Of Vocs And Oils From Surfactant-Flushed Recovered Water By Membrane Permeation, Ashish Nagnath Saraf

Theses

Surfactant-enhanced subsurface remediation appears to be capable of removing efficiently contaminants from the source area as well as the concentrated plume. Initial research was conducted on separate removal of trichloroethylene (TCE) and an oil. It was found that oil permeation and modified pervaporation are effective techniques of removing oil and TCE respectively from the simulated feed. It was found that the oil permeation technique can effectively remove 98-99% of oil from an oil-in-water emulsion. The subsurface-entrapped organic pollutants often have high boiling components along with the VOCs. A combined permeation technique is applied here to simultaneously remove TCE and n-dodecane …

Males and females in grades 5, 8, and 11 completed the Canfield Learning Styles Inventory (Canfield and Knight, 1988), a 30 item questionnaire which assesses student preferences for different learning Conditions, Modes, and Areas of Interest. Student responses to 16 scales were compared …

The Predictive Validity Of The Bender-Gestalt Test Emotional Indicators, Jeffrey Torch Aug 1997

The Predictive Validity Of The Bender-Gestalt Test Emotional Indicators, Jeffrey Torch

Theses

Although clinical reports of the predictive validity of the Emotional Indicators (El's) of the Bender-Gestalt Test (BGT) have been presented, objective research supporting these claims have been limited. This study investigated the validity of the El's on the BGT in predicting maladaptive behaviors of 23 elementary school children referred for psychoeducational evaluation. Several of the El's were related to the behavior factors of the Devereux Elementary School Behavior Rating Scale (DESBRS). Although projective implications of some El's were supported by their regression on DESBRS factors, few strong relationships were found. Implications and suggestions for future research will be discussed.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Chiral Imidazolinones, Huang-Ming Philip Chen Aug 1997

Synthesis And Characterization Of Chiral Imidazolinones, Huang-Ming Philip Chen

Theses

The commercial application of imidazolinone derivatives can be found in herbicides where they inhibit acetolactate synthase (ALS; EC 4.1.3.18; also known as acetohydroxyacid synthase). The imidazolinone class of herbicides have the advantage of long term activity and low mammalian toxicity. Another application of imidazolinone derivatives is in the preparation of a-alkyl-amino acids. The objective of this investigation was to explore the asymmetric synthesis of imidazolinones through the condensation of a variety of imidate ethyl esters and ccamino acids. Furthermore, it was of interest to characterize the chiral properties of a series of imidazolinone derivatives for future investigation. In this research …

Design, Development, And Performance Of A Transient Heat Transfer Resistance Fouling Monitor, David Gruszczynski Aug 1997

Design, Development, And Performance Of A Transient Heat Transfer Resistance Fouling Monitor, David Gruszczynski

Theses

Fouling can be defined as the formation of deposits on heat transfer surfaces that impede heat transfer and increase the resistance to fluid flow. The presence of fouling deposits result in the loss of equipment efficiency, the loss of equipment utilization, the requirement of additional capital expenditures, and adds the cost of cleaning to a process. The cost of fouling to all industries using heat exchangers in the United States was estimated to be 2 x 10+1 dollars per year in 1995. Thus, the control or mitigation of fouling is critical to all industries which employ heat transfer equipment. In …

The Role Of (Alpha)S1-Casein In The Formation Of The Casein Micelle, Chinchi Chen Aug 1997

The Role Of (Alpha)S1-Casein In The Formation Of The Casein Micelle, Chinchi Chen

Theses

Caseins are the major protein components of milk. Bovine caseins have been the most thoroughly studied and serve as the principal area of research for the dairy industry. Bovine caseins are composed of several major polypeptide families, (alpha)s1-, (alpha)s1-, (beta)- and K-caseins. The (alpha)s1-caseins constitute 30.6% of bovine milk protein. The distribution of polar and apolar amino acids within each (alpha)s1 -casein molecule tends to be asymmetric, yielding protein molecules with hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains that give the caseins excellent functional properties. Moreover, the phosphoserine groups of (alpha)s1 -casein associate with calcium phosphate complexes in milk to form loosely ordered …

An Experimental Method To Determine Micromechanical Properties Of Thin Films Using The Atomic Force Microscope, Brandon Comella Jul 1997

An Experimental Method To Determine Micromechanical Properties Of Thin Films Using The Atomic Force Microscope, Brandon Comella

Theses

A promising method has been developed to determine micromechanical properties of thin film materials. Metal and ceramic thin films are used extensively in the computer microprocessor industry and in the relatively new field of Micro- Electromechanical Systems (MEMS). The push for miniaturization and increased performance out of the computer microprocessor and MEMS devices have pushed materials to their limits. Micromechanical properties are very difficult to obtain due to the lack of adequate testing equipment on the microscale. The atomic force microscope (AFM), most commonly used as an imaging tool, lends itself to mechanical interaction with the sample surface by means …

Methods Of Digital Classification Accuracy Assessment, Jeffrey R. Allen Jun 1997

Methods Of Digital Classification Accuracy Assessment, Jeffrey R. Allen

Theses

Landcover classification of remotely sensed data has found many useful applications in industries such as forestry, agriculture, and defense. With the push toward end users, class maps are often incorporated directly into geographical information systems for use in solving large, complex problems. However, errors are inherent in the classification process. The importance of assessing the thematic accuracy of data derived from remote sensing platforms is universally recognized and has motivated much research. Classification accuracy assessment is often required to determine the "fitness of use" or suitability of a data set for a particular application. Failure to identify the magnitude of …

Analysis And Modeling Of Ultrasound Enhanced Soil Washing Process, Kamalavathany Rajaratnam May 1997

Analysis And Modeling Of Ultrasound Enhanced Soil Washing Process, Kamalavathany Rajaratnam

Theses

In this research, statistical analysis of data from ultrasound enhanced soil washing process was performed. The process was optimized using a statistical model. The model had four factors namely power, solvent:soil, surfactant, and dwell time as process variables. The percentage of removal efficiency was considered as the dependent variable. The results from two full and one partial factorial designs were analysed. Interactions up to third order were considered in the analysis, but the results from full factorial design showed that those of order higher than second had insignificant contributions to the removal of contaminants. Since the higher order interactions of …

Growth Of Grass Shrimp, Palaemonetes Pugio, In A Contaminated And An Uncontaminated Site, Suruchi Bhan

Theses

Previous experiments have found that grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, from a contaminated site, Piles Creek (PC). in Linden. New Jersey, are larger than those from a relatively pristine reference site, Sheepshead Creek, located in Tuckerton (T), New Jersey.

This study investigated the possibility that PC conditions provide more food for the shrimp, possibly by being a eutrophic environment. thus allowing for greater growth. or that salinity, toxicants, or other factors at. PC stimulate growth. The current experiment indicated that PC conditions do not foster greater growth for the shrimp than T conditions and that PC shrimp are not inherently …
