A Programmable Look-Up Table-Based Processing In Memory Architecture For Massively Parallel, Energy-Efficient Processing Of Data-Intensive Applications Within Dram, Purab Ranjan Sutradhar
Theses
As modern computing workloads become increasingly data-intensive, the limitations of traditional digital computing hardware, especially in terms of communication bandwidth between memory and processors, are becoming more apparent. Surprisingly, the performance and energy efficiency of the state-of-the-art are not primarily constrained by the computing power of advanced processing architectures but rather by the low communication bandwidth between the memory and the processor. This challenge necessitates a clever re-architecting of digital computing hardware to make the communication between the processor and the memory more energy-efficient, faster, and capable of supporting significantly higher bandwidth. Memory-centric computing emerges as a novel, alternate computing …

Unraveling The Role Of Asymmetry In Structural Porous Media On The Growth Of Fluid Fingers, Amir Ibrahim
Unraveling The Role Of Asymmetry In Structural Porous Media On The Growth Of Fluid Fingers, Amir Ibrahim
Theses
Instabilities at fluid-fluid interfaces are ubiquitous in porous media, even at small flow rates. The growth of fluid fingers during fluid-fluid immiscible displacement in a porous medium results in partial saturation of the medium, and inefficiency in displacement has a tremendous economic impact on oil recovery, chemical reactors, and water filtration industries. In this study, we demonstrate that an inherent asymmetry in the structure of a porous medium controls the development of fluid fingers due to instabilities at fluid interfaces. We construct a 2D porous medium consisting of a matrix of triangles using soft lithography to investigate air displacement by …

Continual Learning For An Ever Evolving And Intelligent Malware Classification System, Mohammad Saidur Rahman
Continual Learning For An Ever Evolving And Intelligent Malware Classification System, Mohammad Saidur Rahman
Theses
Malware classification poses unique challenges for continual learning (CL) systems, driven by the daily influx of new samples and the evolving nature of malware threats that exploit new vulnerabilities. Antivirus vendors encounter hundreds of thousands of unique software pieces daily, encompassing both malicious and benign files. Over its operational life, a malware classifier can accumulate more than a billion samples. Training malware classification system with only new samples and classes leads to catastrophic forgetting (CF), where the system forgets previously learned data distribution. While retraining with all old and new samples effectively combats CF, it is computationally expensive and necessitates …

The project began with investigating a regional asset of interest: the Genesee River. Initial research into this area revealed that the river suffers from poor water quality. The causes and effects of poor water quality were explored, and it was determined that excess nutrients – namely phosphorus – play a critical role in the water quality of the Genesee River and present downstream risk at the river’s point of outflow in Lake Ontario. An examination of peer-reviewed literature, contemporary examples in the built environment where similar water quality issues were addressed, and existing watershed design frameworks were conducted to understand …
Neural Network Characterization Methods For Noisy Quantum Hardware Results, Daniel Richard Breslawski
Neural Network Characterization Methods For Noisy Quantum Hardware Results, Daniel Richard Breslawski
Theses
As the nascent quantum computing paradigm matures and quantum devices become widely available, discrete "eras" are emerging which characterize evolving quantum computing technologies, much like semiconductor technology node classifications. The current period has been coined the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era, as devices above 50 qubits in size exist but computations using these devices accumulate error quickly from classical interference sources and state decoherence. NISQ machines may surpass the capabilities of modern classical computers in ideal circumstances, but the accumulation of error from physical noise limits the size and implementability of reliable quantum algorithms. Because of these limitations, strategies are …
