Comparison The Impact Of Co2 And Uvb On Moringa Peregrina And Moringa Oleifera Growth Under Open Top Chamber, Omar Mohammed Alshehhi
Theses
Climate change has had a tremendous impact on ecosystems, with an apparent connection between farming methods and environmental change. Climate change has a substantial effect on both abiotic and biotic factors that affect crop plants. The increasing number of abiotic stressors has highlighted the impact of global warming on plant productivity. This study compared and evaluated the abiotic stress resistance of two Moringa species (Moringa oleifera and Moringa peregrina) to UV radiation, increased CO₂ levels, and their combined effects. The evaluation mainly focused on key morphological features, including plant height (cm) and fresh and dry weights, to assess …
Evaluation Of Opportunities For The Cultivation Of Heterotrophic Plant Root Organ Cultures As Food: Optimization Of Culture Conditions And Carbohydrate Sources, Fatima Mohammed Alkaabi
Evaluation Of Opportunities For The Cultivation Of Heterotrophic Plant Root Organ Cultures As Food: Optimization Of Culture Conditions And Carbohydrate Sources, Fatima Mohammed Alkaabi
Theses
All agricultural plant production requires investment of water, energy, and land, especially in the Gulf Region, where environmental conditions are not ideally suitable for crop farming. Currently, less than 40% of agricultural plant biomass production constitutes food, which greatly limits the overall feasibility of food production systems worldwide. Crop residues constitute over half of global agricultural biomass, and food waste and biomass from public parks and gardens further add to the vast pool of non-edible plant material. Existing valorization strategies for such material cannot compensate for the enormous amounts of water, energy, land, and human resources invested in their production. …

The Effect Of Nerolidol On The Renal Dysfunction Following Bilateral Ureteral Obstruction In The Rat, Harun Rashed Toumi
Theses
This thesis addressed nerolidol’s potential therapeutic and protective effects on bilateral ureteral obstruction-induced uropathy in rats. Obstructive uropathy stands as a notable contributor to acute kidney injury (AKI), accounting for 5-10% of all AKI cases worldwide, with a particularly high prevalence among the elderly, constituting 22% of AKI cases in this age group. Urinary tract obstruction, often attributed to factors such as kidney stones, urinary tract deformities and benign/malignant growths such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in older men can lead to detrimental outcomes if left untreated, potentially progressing to kidney failure and even mortality. The severity of the kidney …
On Fractional Dunkl-Type Laplacian, Saba Ibrahim Aldan
On Fractional Dunkl-Type Laplacian, Saba Ibrahim Aldan
Theses
This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the fractional Dunkl-type Laplacian operator (−∥x∥ Δ)σ for 0<σ<1, through four equivalent key characterizations: the heat semigroup characterization, the pointwise characterization, the spherical mean characterization, and through an extension theorem. These characterizations offer different perspectives on the operator ∥x∥Δ, generalizing known results for the Euclidean Laplace operator by incorporating reflection symmetries, making it highly relevant in the harmonic analysis of root systems.
By exploring these characterizations, the thesis highlights the deep connections between the fractional operator (−∥x∥Δ)σ and harmonic analysis, as well as its broader applicability in mathematical physics and partial differential equations.

A Novel Approach To Predicting Particle Deposition In A Human Lung Using A Lumped, Oscillatory Respiratory Model, Jordana E. O'Brien
Theses
Inhalation has become widely accepted as the optimal drug delivery mechanism for respiratory diseases, which often requires targeting a particular region of the lung. Mathematical models are key to under- standing the factors that influence drug transport and deposition in the lung. This study proposes a simple zero-dimensional typical path model that couples oscillatory breathing mechanics and particle deposition over multiple breathing cycles. Lung regions are lumped into compartments, and respiration is modeled using a circuit analog framework to capture airflows, lung pressures, and volumes in each lumped region. Particle transport and deposition are modeled by a mass-balance equation in …

Genomic Analysis Of Virulence Loci That Enable Growth Of Plasmopara Viticola On Resistant Vitis Spp., Sarah Teeter
Theses
Plasmopara viticola is considered one of the most damaging grapevine pathogens, costing growers millions of dollars in losses. Despite the discovery of resistance to P. viticola (RPV) loci in grapevines to combat this pathogen, recent research shows that P. viticola can rapidly adapt virulence on some RPV loci, reducing their effectiveness. This thesis explored two strategies to understand how P. viticola adapted to two resistance loci of moderate strength, RPV3.1 and RPV10.3, by identification and characterization of P. viticola genomic regions showing a high selective sweep. Using sequenced natural infections from field samples, multiple tools and custom R scripts were …

Oxidative Stress Responses In Arabidopsis Thaliana Plants To Uv-B Irradiation, Bolaji Olalere
Theses
The depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer has led to increased levels of harmful UV-B radiation reaching the Earth's surface, posing significant challenges for plant health and development. This study investigates the oxidative stress responses in Arabidopsis thaliana when exposed to UV-B irradiation. Arabidopsis thaliana, a well-established model organism, is particularly sensitive to UV-B, making it ideal for understanding the effects of UV-B-induced oxidative stress. UV-B radiation, a mutagenic component of sunlight, disrupts key metabolic, molecular, and developmental processes, leading to DNA damage, impaired metabolism, and morphological changes. This research aims to explore how UV-B exposure affects the activities of …

Ewing’s sarcoma is an aggressive pediatric bone cancer that has low five-year survival rates, primarily due to metastatic disease and resistance of recurring tumors to traditional treatment options; therefore, novel treatment options are needed. The compound cannabidiol (CBD) has been shown to reduce cell viability, migration, and invasion in several tumor types, though the cellular mechanism of action is not well understood. Our lab has demonstrated the ability of CBD to reduce viability, migration, and invasion of Ewing’s sarcoma cells in vitro and is investigating differential protein and cytokine expression of known mediators of migration, such as intercellular adhesion molecule …
Hatshepsut And Akhenaten: Dualities Of Gender, Religion, And Implementation Of Queer Theory, Sadie Anderson
Hatshepsut And Akhenaten: Dualities Of Gender, Religion, And Implementation Of Queer Theory, Sadie Anderson
Theses
This paper discusses 18th Dynasty pharaohs Hatshepsut and Akhenaten and the images they portrayed during their reigns. Hatshepsut, though being female, adhered to the preconstructed image of a traditional male pharaoh while Akhenaten defied the long-established artistic canon in order to create a more androgynous pharaonic identity. Both did this to legitimize their rule, connect themselves to divinity, and interpret the duality of gender innate to Egyptian religion through their iconography. Hatshepsut’s masculine depictions cemented her as the father of the polytheistic Egyptian empire over which she reigned. Akhenaten’s more androgynous representations, on the other hand, portrayed him as both …

The Use Of Puffed Rice Biomaterial As An Insulation Layer: Characterization And Simulation Study, Nicolas Monje Mejia
Theses
Upon close examination in this study, the feasibility of utilizing puffed rice as an insulation layer for construction is explored. Regions that are warm and receive direct sunlight experience heightened temperatures, which can lead to structures trapping excessive heat, resulting in increased cooling demands, energy consumption, and higher costs all around. As revealed via findings from research conducted over time, puffed rice showcases immense prospects when employed as insulation considering its high level of percolation coupled with low thermal conductivity rates. Conversely, conventional materials tend to have better-quality properties like greater compressive strength than what one sees here, along with …

Fractional Derivative-Based Analysis Of The Heat Transfer Properties Of Fluid Flow Over A Contracting Permeable Infinite-Length Cylinder, Anas Saeb Alhasan
Theses
Understanding the complex interplay between the contracting behavior of the cylinder and the fluid flow dynamics has implications for the design of porous structures for heat exchange and filtration systems. In this study, we investigate the dynamics and thermal behavior of fluid flow past a contracting permeable infinite cylinder. First, we developed a mathematical model based on the Navier-Stokes equations to describe the fluid dynamics around the contracting permeable infinite cylinder. A new simple well-behaved definition of fractional derivative called conformable fractional derivative introduced by authors Khalil et al. [3] is employed to generalize the PDE’s of momentum and energy. …

The Potential For Automated Insect Classification Using Infrared Remote Sensing, Rachel Deahl
Theses
Insects play an important role within ecosystems, occupying almost all trophic levels and providing crucial services such as pollination and decomposition. In addition, they can directly and negatively impact humans as crop pests, parasites, and disease vectors. Thus, it is essential to understand the spatial and temporal dynamics of insect populations and communities. Various forms of remote sensing, such as LiDAR, have been used to capture data on insects but often are costly and require advanced expertise. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate a cost-effective methodology that balances information loss. This thesis aims to outline the discrimination required …
How Many Fathers? Frequency Of Multiple Paternity In Soupfin Sharks (Galeorhinus Galeus) From California And Australia, Okoiya Kelly
How Many Fathers? Frequency Of Multiple Paternity In Soupfin Sharks (Galeorhinus Galeus) From California And Australia, Okoiya Kelly
Theses
Multiple paternity has been widely documented in elasmobranch fishes (sharks, rays, and skates); however, the frequency of multiple paternity (FMP; the percentage of sampled litters having multiple sires) varies greatly both among and within species. Understanding the reasons for this inter- and intraspecific variation in FMP may be key to understanding why females mate with multiple males. The soupfin shark (Galeorhinus galeus) is an understudied species in this regard with only one study previously investigating multiple paternity, in which two out of five litters sampled from New Zealand were found to have multiple sires (FMP = 40.0%). We augmented this …
Monitoring Marine Animal Interactions With Open Ocean Aquaculture And The Potential For Measuring Impacts, Ryan Richard Yont
Monitoring Marine Animal Interactions With Open Ocean Aquaculture And The Potential For Measuring Impacts, Ryan Richard Yont
Theses
Aquaculture, the farming of water-based organisms, is one of the fastest growing industries in the food production sector globally. Aquaculture farms, regardless of type, are categorized as either coastal or offshore marine aquaculture and are generalized into three categories: fed (e.g., finfish), unfed (e.g., filter-feeding bivalves), and autotrophic (e.g. kelp). Viewed as an agricultural industry, marine aquaculture is tightly regulated, particularly in the U.S. Despite this, an area of concern for the public and management alike is the potential for marine life interactions with aquaculture gear. Even the best-run farms represent a change in the physical and biological characteristics of …
Polytetrafluoroethylene (Ptfe) Vs. Ptfe-Free Coatings On Paper Label: Analysis Of Label Mechanical And Performance Properties, Chuqi Su
Theses
Post-printed water-based (WB) coatings, commonly known as aqueous coatings, have gained popularity for paper-based label manufacturing because of their environmentally friendly characteristics. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is one of the common additives added to the WB coatings to achieve heat resistance and rub resistance properties for the final product. PTFE is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene, and is a category of Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS). As of January 2024, the sale of food packaging containing PFAS is prohibited in the state of Minnesota, with expectations that this regulation will extend to other states because of the proven harm of PFAS to both humans …
Structural Determination Of The Nudix Hydrolase Rv2985, A Potential Antibiotic Target In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Aidan Lynch
Structural Determination Of The Nudix Hydrolase Rv2985, A Potential Antibiotic Target In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Aidan Lynch
Theses
M. tuberculosis contains around a dozen potential Nudix hydrolases, and we are characterizing several of these enzymes as potential novel antibiotic targets. The diadenosine polyphosphatases (ApnAases) / mRNA decapping enzymes are a family of enzymes within the Nudix hydrolase superfamily. In M. tuberculosis there is a primary Nudix ApnAase and a secondary Nudix ApnAase. The diadenosine polyphosphatases from Legionella pneumophilia and Bartonella bacilliformis have been found to be important in each pathogen's ability to invade human host cells. We are interested in whether these enzymes act in the same way in M. tuberculosis. If they are found to be involved …
Plastic Abundance And Degradation In The Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste, Abbey Whitney
Plastic Abundance And Degradation In The Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste, Abbey Whitney
Theses
Food waste (FW) is a pervasive issue across the supply chain, with an estimated 30-40% of the food supply left unsold or uneaten annually (ReFED, 2022). In response, in 2015 the U.S. set a goal to halve FW by 2030 (U.S. EPA, 2020f). Valorization, the process of recovering value from FW, has become a key strategy, with anaerobic digestion (AD) playing a pivotal role. AD transforms organic waste into biogas and digestate, a potential soil amendment. However, plastic contamination in the organic waste stream poses a significant challenge. During digestion and storage, plastic debris can break down into microplastics (MP), …
