Particle Deposition In Replica Healthy And Emphysematous Alveolar Models Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Edward Harding Jr Jan 2010

Particle Deposition In Replica Healthy And Emphysematous Alveolar Models Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Edward Harding Jr

Theses

Particle deposition in the pulmonary region of the lung has gained increasing interest in the past years. Of particular interest are nano-sized particles, because they have the potential of crossing the blood-gas barrier and into the capillaries. Many factors contribute to how and where particles deposit, such as lung morphology, breathing conditions, fluid flow characteristics, and alveolar wall movement. These many factors make simulating particle deposition in the alveoli difficult. The experimental in vivo studies have commonly used micron sized particles and there is a lack of data for smaller sized particles. Due to these many factors, deposition in the …

Theses

Water-in-oil reverse-phase microemulsions were studied to determine the effects of changing the concentrations of the components of the microemulsions on the shape, sizes, and interactions of the particles of the microemulsion system. Two fluorescent probes were used in the measurement and analysis of bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) water in octane reverse phase microemulsions. Dansylpiperidine and 9-aminoacridine were chosen as the fluorescent probes used in the analysis. The experiment consisted of the analysis in solvents of differing polarity, AOT microemulsion solutions of various water, surfactant, and octane ratios, and four component microemulsions. The four component microemulsions consisted of solutions containing AOT, water, …

Threshold Interval Indexing Techniques For Complicated Uncertain Data, Andrew Knight Jan 2010

Threshold Interval Indexing Techniques For Complicated Uncertain Data, Andrew Knight

Theses

Uncertain data is an increasingly prevalent topic in database research, given the advance of instruments which inherently generate uncertainty in their data. In particular, the problem of indexing uncertain data for range queries has received considerable attention. To efficiently process range queries, existing approaches mainly focus on reducing the number of disk I/Os. However, due to the inherent complexity of uncertain data, processing a range query may incur high computational cost in addition to the I/O cost. In this paper, I present a novel indexing strategy focusing on one-dimensional uncertain continuous data, called threshold interval indexing. Threshold interval indexing is …

Evolutionary Spectral Co-Clustering, Nathan S. Green Jan 2010

Evolutionary Spectral Co-Clustering, Nathan S. Green

Theses

The field of mining evolving data is relatively new and evolutionary clustering is among the latest in this trend. Presently, there are algorithms for evolutionary k-means, agglomerative hierarchical, and spectral clustering. These have been excellent in showing the advantages of using evolving data snapshots for better clustering results. From these algorithms the key portion of the conversion from static data handling to evolving data handling has been the addition of the historical cost function. The cost function is what determines whether or not instances should be moved from one cluster to the next between time-steps based on the historical cuts …

Electro-Osmotic Actuation For Micropump Applications, Sean O'Brien Dec 2009

Electro-Osmotic Actuation For Micropump Applications, Sean O'Brien

Theses

An electro-osmotic actuation mechanism is explored for micropump applications where self contained, low power, miniaturized pumps are necessary. The principle of electro-osmosis through a cation selective membrane is used to develop a differential pressure which is used to deflect a pump membrane. In an electro-osmotic cell, there are electrolyte filled chambers on either side of an ion specific membrane. Hydrated cations migrate in an applied electric field, effectively pulling water molecules to the cathodic chamber. In such a setup, the polarity of the current can be periodically reversed causing the chambers to alternately fill and discharge. Since the chemical reactions …

Reorganization Of Massive Multiagent Systems: Motl/O, Aruntej Seelam Dec 2009

Reorganization Of Massive Multiagent Systems: Motl/O, Aruntej Seelam

Theses

MOTL/O embodies the MOTL paradigm and models organizational adaptation. We report progress on developing computational tools for systematically altering organizational components. This adds a novel dimension to MOTL (Hexmoor, et.al., 2008). This extension is necessary to allow communities of agents or robots to reconfigure their organizational structure in response to changes in the environment. Traditional approach of a hierarchical command and control (C2) structure is ineffective (Alberts & Hayes, 2003). Recently, an edge organization has been proposed as a more suitable alternative Command and control structure in the current information age, due to its empowerment of the edge members, better …

Design, Simulation, And Fabrication Of A Flow Sensor For An Implantable Micropump, Matthew J. Waldron Dec 2009

Design, Simulation, And Fabrication Of A Flow Sensor For An Implantable Micropump, Matthew J. Waldron

Theses

The design, simulation, and fabrication of a flow sensor to be integrated into an implantable micropump is presented. The flow sensor operates by the method of thermal anemometry, in which heat is dissipated from a resistive element held in the flow of the fluid. The rate at which heat is carried away is dependent on the flow rate and is directly related to the thermal conductance. A control circuit utilizing the constant-temperature anemometry mode of operation is used to generate a change in voltage in response to change in thermal conductance, and subsequently, flow rate. A mathematical expression describing the …

An Evaluation Of Hibiscus Moscheutos Ssp. Lasiocarpos And Ipomoea Pandurata As Host Plants Of The Specialist Bee, Ptilothrix Bombiformis (Apoidea: Emphorini) And The Role Of Floral Scent Chemistry In Host-Selection., Melissa Diane Simpson

Theses

Ptilothrix bombiformis (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) is a specialist bee belonging to the tribe Emphorini. The emphorine phylogeny suggests that Convolvulacea is the ancestral plant family and independent evolutionary host-switches to several unrelated plant families have occurred. The role of floral scent has been well-characterized in pollination systems involving moths, butterflies, bumblebees, and honeybees, but little is known about how specialist bees mediate host selection, or how host-choice evolved in specialist bees. This research investigates the role of floral scent in host selection by P. bombiformis. Ptilothrix bombiformis has traditionally been classified as a Hibiscus (Malvaceae) oligolege. My research shows that it …

Thermoregulation Of Capsule Production Of Streptococcus Pyogenes Strain Hsc5, Trilce Michelle Galeas Dec 2009

Thermoregulation Of Capsule Production Of Streptococcus Pyogenes Strain Hsc5, Trilce Michelle Galeas

Theses

Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is responsible for mild and common infections like tonsillitis and pharyngitis, and more serious invasive disorders like necrotizing fasciitis and glomerulonephritis. The ability to invade tissues is closely linked to the virulence factors expressed by the bacterium. Hyaluronic acid capsule expression is variable among all the strains in S. pyogenes and confers the capacity to evade the immune response. In a previous study, it was found that capsule production in CovR mutants was temperature-regulated, showing no capsule production at 37℃ but increased production was observed at 25℃. In this study, the objective is to find the …

Regulation Of The Alr1 Transporter By Mg Supply, Phaik Har Lim Nov 2009

Regulation Of The Alr1 Transporter By Mg Supply, Phaik Har Lim

Theses

Magnesium is required for many essential processes and pathways, including protein synthesis and energy metabolism. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Mg2+ uptake across the plasma membrane primarily occurs via the magnesium transporter Alr1. Preliminary data had shown that Alr1-HA accumulation was decreased by Mg. Here I show that the epitope tag was responsible for this differential accumulation of Alr1, as native or N-terminally tagged Alr1 displayed much less differential accumulation. Immunoblotting and Ni2+ uptake assays indicated that both Mg-deficiency and the mnr2 mutation increased Alr1 activity, but under conditions where native protein accumulation was little affected. Since Mg-dependent regulation of …

Cactuss: Clustering Of Attack Tracks Using Significant Services, Christopher Thomas Murphy Nov 2009

Cactuss: Clustering Of Attack Tracks Using Significant Services, Christopher Thomas Murphy

Theses

Network analysts are bombarded with large amounts of low level data, posing great challenges for them to differentiate and recognize critical multistage attacks. Multistage attacks are performed by hackers to compromise one or more machines in a network to gradually gain access to critical information or network operation hidden behind layers of firewall rules. These multistage attacks, composed of correlated Intrusion Detection System (IDS) alerts, can be diverse in the way they progress and penetrate the network. There exists no current literature defining how these diverse multistage attacks may be classified or categorized. This work aims to perform unsupervised learning …

Visualization Of Protein 3d Structures In Reduced Representation With Simultaneous Display Of Intra And Inter-Molecular Interactions, Vrunda Sheth

Theses

Protein structure representation is an important tool in structural biology. There exists different methods of representing the protein 3D structures and different biologists favor different methods based on the information they require. Currently there is no available method of protein 3D structure representation which captures enough chemical information from the protein sequence and clearly shows the intra-molecular and the inter-molecular H-bonds and VDW interactions at the same time. This project aims to reduce the 3D structure of a protein and display the reduced representation along with inter-molecular and the intra-molecular H-bonds and van der Waals interactions. A reduced protein representation …

Nostalgia, Pavel Romaniko Aug 2009

Nostalgia, Pavel Romaniko

Theses

The visual part of this project has revolved around ideas that have been in the process of forming themselves for a few years. But if I could assign a topic or a totalizing theme to the project, I would be limiting it in a very particular way. I see Nostalgia as a beginning and in no way something that has come to fruition or to a speci!c resolution. If anything I consider it as a still evolving subject; it is very youthful and fresh for me. The project also rejects a new way of working for me from creating the …
