Functional Traits And Grain Size In Species Assemblages Of A Neotropical Dry Forest, Vania Wendy Torrez Flores Feb 2011

Functional Traits And Grain Size In Species Assemblages Of A Neotropical Dry Forest, Vania Wendy Torrez Flores

Theses

A long-standing question in ecology is how so many tree species can coexist. New insight into assembly processes has been gained through functional traits that influence fitness. Such traits include the maximum height and diameter of a species as these describe the plant’s ability to compete for light. Additionally, specific leaf area (SLA) describes the amount of leaf area for light capture per unit of biomass invested. SLA is one of the easiest traits to measure, but it depends on access to fresh leaf material which is not possible for samples from remote areas or historical collections e.g. herbaria. The …

An Unnatural History, Sarah Hearn Feb 2011

An Unnatural History, Sarah Hearn

Theses

An Unnatural History is an installation that inhabits the space between the continuously shifting realms of science, pseudoscience and science fiction. This project documents the (fictional) discovery of a taxonomy of marine life containing and cooperating with the elements from the periodic table. As science and technology progress, we are constantly faced with redefining, reinterpreting and reconfiguring what we thought we knew about the world around us and previous scientific "facts" are revealed to have been constructed "beliefs." Using multiple modes of representation, An Unnatural History draws attention to the real, the imagined and what it means to visualize biological …

Theses

Sola in Nature is an invitation to encounter the internal human experience inspired by nature. Each photograph exhibits different sensibilities; exploring what the psychological self represents in nature through the images. The human mind is like air. We cannot smell, hold, and see the air, but we can feel it when we breathe. We cannot live without it. This thesis transcribes personal experience into a photographic spectacle that provides the public access, with which to examine the sophisticated mind as reflection of the self. Nature is, in this work, considered not only as spiritual existence but also as the psychological …

Aminormotiffinder - A Graph Grammar Based Tool To Effectively Search A Minor Motifs In 3d Rna Molecules, Ankur Malhotra Jan 2011

Aminormotiffinder - A Graph Grammar Based Tool To Effectively Search A Minor Motifs In 3d Rna Molecules, Ankur Malhotra

Theses

RNA Motifs are three dimensional folds that play important role in RNA folding and its interaction with other molecules. They basically have modular structure and are composed of conserved building blocks dependent upon the sequence. Their automated in silico identification remains a challenging task. Existing motif identification tools does not correctly identify motifs with large structure variations. Here a “graph rewriting” based method is proposed to identify motifs in real three dimensional structures. The unique encoding of A Minor Searcher takes into consideration the non canonical base pairs and also multipairing of RNA structural motifs. The accuracy is demonstrated by …

Effects Of Hypertension And Aging On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Contribution To Reconstituted Aortic Tissue Stiffness, Nancy Lisa Sehgel Jan 2011

Effects Of Hypertension And Aging On Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Contribution To Reconstituted Aortic Tissue Stiffness, Nancy Lisa Sehgel

Theses

Aortic stiffness increases with hypertension and aging, and much of this increase has been thought to occur due to changes in the extracellular matrix. However, an increase in cell stiffness could also be important. To study the cellular contribution to aortic stiffness, a reconstituted aortic tissue model (composed of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in a collagen matrix) was developed. VSMCs isolated from thoracic aortic samples of 5-week and 18-week old male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats were passaged four times and then separately incubated in collagen for two days on a cylindrical mandrel. The resulting …

Discovering Inner Ear And Central Auditory System Cellular Pathways That Might Contribute To Age-Related Hearing Loss, Xiaoxi Liu Jan 2011

Discovering Inner Ear And Central Auditory System Cellular Pathways That Might Contribute To Age-Related Hearing Loss, Xiaoxi Liu

Theses

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a prevalent communication problem among senior citizens. Previous work (Tadros et al., 2008) has revealed genes which change their expression significantly with aging and hearing loss. However, this study is limited as it mainly focuses on apoptosis-related genes. Genes that regulate biological pathways other than apoptosis might also contribute to the development of age-related hearing loss, as suggested by some studies (Tadros et al., 2007; Souza et al., 2008). In order to circumvent this limitation and to better understand the underlying mechanisms of this communication problem, a free computational tool called Gene Set Enrichment Analysis …

However, Mg and its alloys are susceptible to accelerated degradation rates due to galvanic corrosion, which leads to unpredictable corrosion behavior. The objective of this study is to develop biocompatible, functional thin film magnesium oxide (MgO) coatings that: (1) serve as a galvanic separator between metallic substrates and metallic coatings, (2) control the rate of corrosion of Mg-based implants, (3) have controlled resorption times based on coating thickness, (4) promote osseointegration and (5) are predictable in corrosive environments. …

Application Of Kalman Filter With Time Correlated Measurement Errors In Subsurface Contaminant Transport Modeling, Godfrey Mills Jan 2011

Application Of Kalman Filter With Time Correlated Measurement Errors In Subsurface Contaminant Transport Modeling, Godfrey Mills

Theses

Contaminant transport modeling of a conservative solute in the subsurface is investigated by applying a Kalman filter (KF) with time correlated measurement errors. The usual method or assumption often employed is white Gaussian errors, but time correlated measurement errors were used instead for this research, since some hydrological observation data exhibit time correlated error characteristics. An observation data was generated from a two dimensional analytical solution with an additive time correlated random errors. This was used as the measurement Equation for the KF with time correlated measurement errors and the KF with white Gaussian errors. The measurement differencing algorithm was …

Identification Of A Second Putative Receptor For Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus, Khrystal C. Mcgrant Jan 2011

Identification Of A Second Putative Receptor For Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus, Khrystal C. Mcgrant

Theses

Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is a bi-segmented, double stranded RNA virus that causes high mortality in young salmonid fish worldwide. As an obligate intracellular parasite, the first stage of the IPNV infectious cycle is the binding of the virus to a receptor in the host cell membrane. Recently, research has focused on identifying the IPNV receptor, and several scientists have reported binding of IPNV to a protein of approximately 220-250 kDa. The focus of this research was to investigate and reaffirm the identity of the IPNV receptor(s) for IPNV serotypes VR-299 and Sp in Chinook Salmon Embryo (CHSE-214) cells …

Theses

This thesis is focus on developing pattern recognition techniques to trace the origins and propagation of the Pre-Tropical Storm Debby (2006) African easterly waves (AEWs) and mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) using satellite imagery. The results are used to verify a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. The pre-Debby MCSs’ movement and formation needs to be precisely and objectively tracked. These MCSs could be generated over mountains in North Africa, such as Ethiopian Highlands (EH), Darfur Mountains (DF), and Asir Mountains (AS), going through complicated splitting and merging processes. Thus, an objectively analyzed MCS movement is essential not only to help provide …

Classification Of Civilian Vehicle Sounds Using A Large Database Of Vehicle Sounds, David Tettey Jan 2011

Classification Of Civilian Vehicle Sounds Using A Large Database Of Vehicle Sounds, David Tettey

Theses

We have completed the building of an extensive database of civilian vehicle sounds. The database consists of correlated acoustic and seismic signatures of a large number (exceeding 850) of civilian vehicles. Each acoustic signature is obtained through two high-quality microphones separated by 25 feet, and whose signals are exactly synchronized. In this work, spectral and tristimulus features of civilian vehicle sounds are computed and then submitted to further processing using principal component analysis. The "super" features, derived after principal component analysis is performed, are then used for classification. In this research effort, the performance of the quadratic classifier with that …

A Stochastic Capacitated Facility Location Model For Pre-Positioning Port Commodities During A Disaster, Jessye Leigh Bemley Jan 2011

A Stochastic Capacitated Facility Location Model For Pre-Positioning Port Commodities During A Disaster, Jessye Leigh Bemley

Theses

As the intensity of natural disasters increases, there is a need to develop policies and procedures to assist various humanitarian relief groups, industry or government agencies with moving aid to affected areas. One of the biggest hindrances to this process is damage to transportation networks, in particular, waterways. To keep waterways safe, aids to navigation (ATONs) are placed in various areas to guide mariners and ships to their final destinations. If the ATONs are damaged, then the waterways are left unsafe and it is difficult to move supplies to repair them and recover from a disaster. A stochastic facility location …

Fabrication Of Pd-Cu Membranes By Surfactant Induced Electroless Plating (Siep), Md. Saiful Islam Jan 2011

Fabrication Of Pd-Cu Membranes By Surfactant Induced Electroless Plating (Siep), Md. Saiful Islam

Theses

Pd-Cu composite membranes on microporous stainless steel substrate (MPSS) were fabricated by novel electroless plating (EP process. In conventional Pd-EP process, the oxidation-reduction reactions between Pd-complex and hydrazine result in evolution of NH3 and N2 gas bubbles. When adhering to a substrate surface and in the pores, these gas bubbles can hinder uniform Pd-film deposition, which results in dendrite growth leading to poor film formation. We addressed this problem by introducing cationic surfactant in the electroless plating process known as surfactant induced electroless plating (SIEP). The unique features of this innovation provide control of (1) Pd- and Cudeposition rate, and …

Evaluation Of Rice Extract As A Potential Stabilizer In Plain Yogurt, Sangeetha Nurani Viswanathan

Theses

Quality and consumer acceptability are essential parameters in dairy products The objectives of the present study were to examine the microbiological (viability of L. bulgaricus, S. thermophilus, and bifidobacteria), chemical (pH, titratable acidity, and total solids), and physical(syneresis) qualities of yogurt enriched with rice extract as a stabilizer during 28 days of storage at 4°C. Additionally, viscosity measurements and consumer acceptability were determined for yogurt enriched with rice extract. Results showed that the viability of L. bulgaricus was maintained with the addition of rice extract. Population of Streptococcus thermophilus and bifidobacteria decreased significantly (p<0.05) in the control sample but the addition of rice extract at 15% concentration supported the viability of bifidobacteria in yogurt over storage. The addition of rice extract did not alter the pH or titratable acidity of yogurt. Viscosity, total solids and syneresis values slightly changed with the addition of rice extract. Yogurt prepared with rice extract ranked higher in terms of texture and appearance by the panelists. Our results indicated that the addition of rice extract could improve the quality characteristics and consumer acceptability of plain yogurt. Hence, rice extract has a promising potential to be used as an alternative stabilizer in dairy products.

Obstructing Authenticity: The Church And Sexuality In Randall Kenan’S A Visitation Of Spirits And Jeanette Winterson’S Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, Kyesha L. Jennings

Theses

The dominant beliefs of a society determine what it finds acceptable and socially constructed theories generally valorize only heterosexism. Thus, global society has viewed homosexuality as a repudiation of the norm—an aberration, a disease, or a “lifestyle”—all of which carry negative social connotations. While this particularly characterizes churches within the African American community, identical issues occur within other denominations of Christianity. This study will explore literary texts that display how the Christian church, more specifically the Baptist and Pentecostal denominations, obstruct homosexuals’ identity by implementing a limited, rigid morality that rejects all who do not fit within its code, a …
