Towards An Understanding Of The Evolution Of Violaceae From An Anatomical And Morphological Perspective, Saul Ernesto Hoyos
Towards An Understanding Of The Evolution Of Violaceae From An Anatomical And Morphological Perspective, Saul Ernesto Hoyos
Theses
Few comprehensive empirical studies have ever been published on Violaceae, and the basal part of the family, particularly Fusispermum spp. and Rinorea spp. In this research morphology and anatomy of stem, node, leaf, flower, and seeds of Fusispermum spp., Rinorea spp., and Goupia glabra were studied to understand the basal evolution of Violaceae from an anatomical and morphological perspective. This study reflects the value of anatomical studies when related to phylogenetic work. Nodal, petiole, flower and seed morphology and anatomy is a good example. The trilacunar nodes of G. glabra found are consistent with the movement of Goupia from Celastraceae …
A Study Of Phylogenetic Trees Versus Networks To Objectively Identify Haplogroups In Mitochondrial Dna, Melissa Ruda
A Study Of Phylogenetic Trees Versus Networks To Objectively Identify Haplogroups In Mitochondrial Dna, Melissa Ruda
Theses
Mitochondrial DNA is important in the studies of population, medicine, migration, and forensics, as well as a few other disciplines. Further insight on grouping mtDNA sequences could give insight on identifying genetic variation that causes susceptibility to disease, more personalized medicines, or more effective forensic analysis. Mitochondrial DNA is currently grouped into haplogroups determined from phylogenetic tree analysis. Phylogenetic tree analysis may not be the optimal solution for mtDNA because they work better for data above the species level, to show population relationships, not sequences that only differ by a few nucleotides. To compare both analysis, sample data was obtained …

Evaluation Of Water Transport In Pemfc Gas Diffusion Layers Using Image Analysis, Michael Daino
Evaluation Of Water Transport In Pemfc Gas Diffusion Layers Using Image Analysis, Michael Daino
Theses
Liquid water transport through the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was investigated through three interrelated studies utilizing the tools of image processing. First, a new framework and model for the digital generation and characterization of the microstructure of GDL materials with localized binder and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) distributions were developed using 3D morphological imaging processing. The new generation technique closely mimics manufacturing processes and produces realistic 3D phase-differentiated digital microstructures in a cost- and time- effective manner. The generated distributions of hydrophobic (PTFE) and hydrophilic (carbon) regions representative of commercial GDL materials provides water …

G (Alpha) 12 Is Required For Thromboxane A2 To Regulate Tumor Cell Motility, Babar Malik
Theses
Thromboxane (TX) A2 is a prostaglandin produced by metabolism of arachidonic acid through cyclooxygenases and thromboxane synthase. TXA2 is biologically active, mainly through activating its cognate, seven transmembrane, G protein coupled receptor. It was previously reported that thromboxane A2 receptor (TP) was expressed in prostate cancer, and further activation of this receptor elicited cell contraction and modulated tumor cell motility through regulating small GTPase RhoA[1]. This study aims to identify G alpha protein(s) involved in thromboxane A2 signaling in tumor cell motility. Methods: The expression of G alpha proteins in the PC3MM cells was studied by …

A simulation-based sustainability toolkit is developed in this research, in order to efficiently provide the capability of modeling and evaluating the sustainability related performance measures in systems of interest. As sustainability related issues, such as energy consumption, emissions, and waste generation are becoming a more integrated part of operational and long-term planning decisions, simulation modeling is needed to analyze the system performance not only from the traditional system performance measures such as productivity and efficiency, but also taking into account the environmental impacts within the studied system in order to aid in decision-making. This research introduces the concept and general …
Evaluation Of Cfd Based Hemolysis Prediction Methods, Oyuna Myagmar
Evaluation Of Cfd Based Hemolysis Prediction Methods, Oyuna Myagmar
Theses
Accurate quantitative evaluation of shear stress-related hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) could be used to improve blood handling devices, including left ventricular assist devices (LVAD). Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) predicts the fluid dynamics of complex pump geometry and has been used to track the shear stress history of red blood cells as they travel through these devices. Several models that predict the relationship between hemolysis, shear stress and exposure time have been used to evaluate the hemolysis in the pumps. However, the prediction accuracy has not reached the satisfactory level. The goal of my thesis is to investigate the …
Tunable Micro-Electro Mechanical Fabry Perot Etalon, Annette Rivas
Tunable Micro-Electro Mechanical Fabry Perot Etalon, Annette Rivas
Theses
Many different devices capable of spectral wavelength collection exist. The device we propose is an array of individually tunable MEMS Fabry Perot etalons capable of scanning from 400nm to 750nm as commanded. Typically when Fabry Perot devices are used additional etalons are placed in series to reject extra modes that would otherwise be passed by a single etalon. The device that is examined rejects the extra modes without the need for an extensive filtering scheme because the optical path length is held to ½ wavelength. The device proposed is thermally actuated. It has been modeled in COMSOL and shows even …

Scale-Up Of Algae Growth System To Cleanse Wastewater And Produce Oils For Biodiesel Production, Eric Lannan
Scale-Up Of Algae Growth System To Cleanse Wastewater And Produce Oils For Biodiesel Production, Eric Lannan
Theses
Biofuels are a currently a very hot topic with significant interest in both ethanol and biodiesel production. These fuels can be used in current internal combustion engines with little or no modification. Biodiesel can be produced from a variety of sources. One of the most promising sources is microalgae. In some species of algae, oil or lipids can account for as much as 70% of their total biomass. Unfortunately, the cost to produce biodiesel from algae is much too high to compete with petroleum-based fuels. To reduce the production cost of algae, wastewater has been discovered to be an excellent …

Presettlement Forest Composition In The Connecticut Tract Of Western New York, Evelyn Brister
Theses
This study of the vegetation of the 100,000-acre Connecticut Tract in western New York examines the presettlement characteristics of the forest, including the tree species composition, tree density, and wetland extent. Presettlement vegetation studies add to what is known about the forests of this region before European settlement in the early 1800s brought widespread changes to these forests. The ecological data in original private land surveys from 1811 were transcribed and then analyzed using ArcGIS and IDRISI GIS software. The surveys contained both witness tree data and line descriptions, which were analyzed for species composition and community type and were …
Invertebrate Effects On Sediment Biogeochemistry And Microphytobenthos Following Estuarine Macroalgal Blooms, Katherine Premo
Invertebrate Effects On Sediment Biogeochemistry And Microphytobenthos Following Estuarine Macroalgal Blooms, Katherine Premo
Theses
Eutrophication has led to the proliferation of devastating macroalgal blooms in shallow coastal estuaries. Processes at the sediment surface in shallow marine environments can ultimately affect nutrient cycling and the progress of eutrophication. Through bioturbation and grazing of microphytobenthos (MPB) infaunal invertebrates significantly alter redox dependent chemical and microbially-mediated transformations of nutrients and their subsequent release to or uptake from the overlying water column. This study used a series of experiments to investigate the effects of invertebrates on sediment biogeochemistry and nutrient cycling at early and late stages of eutrophication. Unique aspects of this study were the inclusions of multiple …
A Thermally Actuated Microelectromechanical (Mems) Device For Measuring Viscosity, Ivan Puchades
A Thermally Actuated Microelectromechanical (Mems) Device For Measuring Viscosity, Ivan Puchades
Theses
A thermally actuated non-cantilever-beam micro-electro-mechanical viscosity sensor is presented. The proposed device is based on thermally induced vibrations of a silicon-based membrane and its damping due to the surrounding fluid. This vibration viscometer device utilizes thermal actuation through an in-situ resistive heater and piezoresistive sensing, both of which utilize CMOS compatible materials leading to an inexpensive and reliable system. Due to the nature of the actuation, thermal analysis was performed utilizing PN diodes embedded in the silicon membrane to monitor its temperature. This analysis determined the minimum heater voltage pulse amplitude and time in order to prevent heat loss to …

Error Sentinel: A Rule-Based Spreadsheet Program For Intelligent Data Entry, Error Correction, And Curation, Kyle Dewey
Error Sentinel: A Rule-Based Spreadsheet Program For Intelligent Data Entry, Error Correction, And Curation, Kyle Dewey
Theses
Within the biological sciences, spreadsheets are commonly used as a data entry and storage medium. While this practice is simple and generally well understood, the unrestrained flexibility of the spreadsheet medium allows errors to accumulate and potentially propagate. Such errors impede accurate analysis, hindering research. The underlying problem is that the error correction facilities of typical spreadsheet programs are lackluster at best, if they exist at all. For this reason, Error Sentinel was developed. Error Sentinel is a spreadsheet program with programmable error correction facilities. These facilities allow users to define exactly what clean data is, along with corrections for …
Intimate Immensity, Henrik Søderstrøm
Intimate Immensity, Henrik Søderstrøm
Theses
The small house that comprises my visual thesis, made of simple materials reclaimed from junk piles and old houses, was made as worship to the God who spoke the world into existence. This writing is a playful counterpart to my artwork. Water has an amazing ability to transpose itself fluidly across borders, from the atmosphere to the ground to the cells in your body. Its movement is defiant of divisions as it carries nutrients through layers of compost, from rotting biomass to new sprouts. My process of absorbing and using materials is inspired by this cycling. I am interested in …

The purpose of this study is to observe the level of neuroticism in special education teachers working with children with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders (EBD) and how it is related to the level of burnout (i.e., chronic state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion; Center & Steventon, 2001) they experience. Two surveys, Friedman's Questionnaire on Teacher Burnout and Eysenck's Personality Questionnaire Brief Version, were delivered to special education teachers working with EBD students in self-contained classrooms in Western New York. The data were analyzed by correlating the teachers' level of neuroticism with their level of burnout. Results indicated a significant correlation between …
Developing Interprofessional Collaboration: An Action Research Approach To Change In Residential Care, Denise F. O Leary
Developing Interprofessional Collaboration: An Action Research Approach To Change In Residential Care, Denise F. O Leary
Theses
This thesis presents a study which aimed to develop interprofessional teams to drive organisational change at residential care facilities in order to gain insight into the processes involved, as well as the factors influencing them. It is unrealistic to create a team and expect team members to immediately act in a collaborative way to address team goals, yet the development process has been largely overlooked in the literature. This thesis addresses this gap. Healthcare providers at three residential care facilities for older people were invited to become involved in the study and teams were successfully set up at two facilities. …
