A Conferralist Account Of Individuality, Zachary Auwerda Apr 2018

A Conferralist Account Of Individuality, Zachary Auwerda

Theses

The individual is at the center of liberal political theory. Despite this, oppressed groups that are members of liberal societies are not respected as individuals. This paper attempts to explain one way in which this happens. I argue that some people are not treated as individuals, because they are in fact not individuals. In some cases, to be an individual requires recognition as an individual. I attempt to show that certain uses of the term “individual” refer to conferred properties. A conferred property is a property that is given to an object by a subject. Thus, conferred properties are not …

Constraints And Explanation, Alexander Bolano Apr 2018

Constraints And Explanation, Alexander Bolano

Theses

For the past 40 years, causal-mechanical approaches to explanation in science have been the received view. In this paper, I will argue that causal-mechanical approaches to explanation are not the whole story; there is a notable class of explanations that I call constraining explanation. Constraining explanation do not work by describing some causal structure; rather they work by highlighting mathematical constraints on what kinds of structure there can be. Constraining explanations are different that causal explanations because they give a kind of modal knowledge that causal-mechanical explanation alone cannot give.

Efficient Reduced Bias Genetic Algorithm For Generic Community Detection Objectives, Aditya Karnam Gururaj Rao Apr 2018

Efficient Reduced Bias Genetic Algorithm For Generic Community Detection Objectives, Aditya Karnam Gururaj Rao

Theses

The problem of community structure identification has been an extensively investigated area for biology, physics, social sciences, and computer science in recent years for studying the properties of networks representing complex relationships. Most traditional methods, such as K-means and hierarchical clustering, are based on the assumption that communities have spherical configurations. Lately, Genetic Algorithms (GA) are being utilized for efficient community detection without imposing sphericity. GAs are machine learning methods which mimic natural selection and scale with the complexity of the network. However, traditional GA approaches employ a representation method that dramatically increases the solution space to be searched by …

In Sheep’S Clothing: Reflections On The Trickery Of Nature, Moneerah Alayar Apr 2018

In Sheep’S Clothing: Reflections On The Trickery Of Nature, Moneerah Alayar

Theses

In the realm of nature as well as in human society, things are often not what they seem. Animals, plants, and humans use endless tricks and stratagems to hide their vulnerable parts, camouflage their true strength, and survive despite hazards and predators at every turn. To exist in this world as a woman is to be a student of these protective devices, to learn and adopt the techniques and behaviors that best ensure her survival against the forces of patriarchy and institutionalized oppression. She must use whatever means she can to protect herself and secure her place in the world. …

Driving Forces In Disclosure: Self-Disclosure Goals And Intimacy At The Podium, Layne Paubel Apr 2018

Driving Forces In Disclosure: Self-Disclosure Goals And Intimacy At The Podium, Layne Paubel

Theses

This study examined six underlying motivations (expression, self-clarification, social validation, relationship development, social control, and information sharing) for self-disclosure in a public speaking setting and a dyadic relationship setting. Five of these goals come from Derlega and Grzelak’s (1979) functional approach to self-disclosure and one is an additional goal examined by Bazarova and Choi (2014). This study found that the relative salience of self-disclosure goals in the public speaking classroom was identity clarification, information sharing, self-expression/relief of distress, social validation, relationship development, and social control. Findings indicate that the relative salience of goals in the dyadic relationship setting was self-expression/relief …

Evaluation Of Vaporization Enthalpies And Vapor Pressures Of Various Aroma And Pharmacologically Active Compounds By Correlation Gas Chromatography, Daniel Simmons

Theses

Scientists in the pharmaceutical, food, and aroma industries can benefit from reliable thermochemical data. Vaporization enthalpy and vapor pressure data are not available for all compounds. Furthermore, some literature data is conflicting. The goal of this work was to use a method called correlation gas chromatography (CGC) to generate reliable vaporization enthalpy data in instances where other experimental methods are not applicable. Vapor pressures of the targets were also calculated in cases where the required literature data on the standards used in this technique were available.

CGC involves making a standard cocktail that includes a mixture of standards and one …

At The Fire: An Investigation In The Transformation Of Matter, Darren T. Adair

Theses

My Thesis Work investigated the infinite possibilities in transformation of matter. I wanted to identify and suspend stages within natural cycles through the manipulation of glass and other mixed media. Furthermore, I looked to explore degradation and regeneration of components— at a microscopic and macroscopic level—to create sculptural pieces.

The body of work I produced for my Thesis Exhibition was a culmination of many components. Embracing process art making was the most successful outcome that resulted from making this collection; through experimentation, I was able to gather more information about the objects I was creating. Another useful aspect to my …

Role Of The Snf2 Homolog, Irc20, In Yeast Genome Maintenance, Deena Mohamed Galal Eldin Ahmed Apr 2018

Role Of The Snf2 Homolog, Irc20, In Yeast Genome Maintenance, Deena Mohamed Galal Eldin Ahmed

Theses

In eukaryotes, DNA is wrapped around histone proteins forming a highly compact structure, the chromatin. All DNA-based processes must occur within the complex organization of the chromatin, and this requires modulation of its structure when needed. This is accomplished by covalent histone modifications that alter histone-DNA contacts, as well as through the actions of ATP-dependent chromatin remodelers. These multi-subunit complexes play major roles in transcription regulation, replication and repairing DNA damage. This thesis aims to characterize a poorly studied member of the SWI/SNF family of ATPases/helicases, Irc20, from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Previously, Irc20 has been shown to be involved in …

Design Considerations For Training Memristor Crossbars Used In Spiking Neural Networks, Lydia M. Hays Apr 2018

Design Considerations For Training Memristor Crossbars Used In Spiking Neural Networks, Lydia M. Hays

Theses

CMOS/Memristor integrated architectures have shown to be powerful for realizing energy-efficient learning machines. These architectures are recently demonstrated in reservoir computing networks, which have reduced training complexity and resource utilization. In reservoir computing, the training time is curtailed due to random weight initialization in the hidden layer, which will remain constant during training. The CMOS/memristor variability can be exploited to generate these random weights and reduce the area overhead. Recent studies have shown that the CMOS/memristor crossbars are ideal for on-device learning machines, including reservoir computing networks. An exemplary CMOS/memristor crossbar based on-device accelerator, Ziksa, was demonstrated on several of …

Adjustment Of Parametric Dynamic Scheduling Heuristics For Heterogeneous Systems To Account For Heterogeneity, Thomas G. Guerin Apr 2018

Adjustment Of Parametric Dynamic Scheduling Heuristics For Heterogeneous Systems To Account For Heterogeneity, Thomas G. Guerin

Theses

Modern computing applications are becoming increasingly data-hungry and computationally expensive. This trend continues even as hardware performance constraints loom with the impending death of Moore's law. Hence, systems have become increasingly heterogeneous in the pursuits of improving performance and reducing power consumption. Such a heterogeneous system relies on a variety of different specialized processors with differing architectures, rather than processing units of a single type. Given their architectural differences, any given computation will not perform equally on all processors. As such, efficient scheduling of computations to processors is an essential design consideration.

In this thesis work, a simulation of an …

Development Of Multi-Class Analytical Methods For Agrochemical Contaminants, Sarah Tuck Jan 2018

Development Of Multi-Class Analytical Methods For Agrochemical Contaminants, Sarah Tuck

Theses

In this project, cost-effective multi-class analytical methods were developed to detect a range of antiparasitic, feed additive and pesticide substances in foodstuffs of animal origin. These substances have the potential to enter the food chain through their occurrence as residues either through the animals themselves or other routes e.g. contamination. To ensure the continued safety of food destined for human consumption regulatory control limits have been established for permitted levels of these residues in foods of animal origin. Despite these controls the continued monitoring of foodstuffs is necessary to ensure these limits are not breached and that substances are not …

A Numerical Analysis Of The Effects Of Flapping Wing Kinematics On The Aeroacoustics In Hovering Flight, Kabilan Nedunchezian

Theses

Despite the recent interest in flapping wing aerodynamics, the aerodynamic sound generation mechanism of a flapping wing is inadequately understood. In this thesis, the interplay between the wing motion, resulting unsteady aerodynamics, and aeroacoustics of a flapping wing flyer is investigated. The wing motion is varied in terms of the flapping amplitude, pitching amplitude and the phase difference between flap and pitch. The unsteady flow around the flapping wing is numerically calculated using a well-validated Navier-Stokes equation solver. Acoustic pressures are computed using the Ffowcs- Williams and Hawkings equation in a three-dimensional space at varying distances from the wing. Two …

Altered Myelination As A Proposed Mechanism For Neurocognitive Dysfunction Observed In Mice With Tyrosinemia Type 1, Marissa E. Moore Jan 2018

Altered Myelination As A Proposed Mechanism For Neurocognitive Dysfunction Observed In Mice With Tyrosinemia Type 1, Marissa E. Moore

Theses

The exact mechanism behind the recent reports of impaired neurocognitive function in individuals with the rare genetic disorder Hereditary Tyrosinemia Type I (HT1) has yet to be determined. This disorder stems from lack of expression of the gene fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase (FAH), which is responsible for tyrosine catabolism. This subsequently leads to a buildup of tyrosine and associated harmful metabolites that will cause sever liver dysfunction and cancer if treatment is not provided. The drug 2-[2-nitro-4-(trifluoromethylbenzoyl) cyclohexane-1,3-dione (NTBC) has proven to be effective in stopping the negative consequences on the liver and kidneys by inhibiting an enzyme upstream in the metabolic …

Investigation Of Transverse Electric And Transverse Magnetic Modes In Microstrip Patch Antennas, Tanzeela Mitha Jan 2018

Investigation Of Transverse Electric And Transverse Magnetic Modes In Microstrip Patch Antennas, Tanzeela Mitha

Theses

Microstrip patch antennas are light weight and low cost antennas that are generally made of perfect electric conducting (PEC) materials and excite the transverse magnetic (TM) modes, when supported by a thin dielectric slab. In this thesis, a new type of patch antennas is investigated to excite the transverse electric (TE) modes, based on electromagnetic duality theorem. To this end, new sets of boundary conditions are enforced through utilizing perfect magnetic conductors (PMC) instead of PEC. That is, the zero-impedance PECs are replaced with high-impedance PMCs. Since a PMC does not exist in nature, artificial magnetic conductors (AMC), based on …
