A Comparative Study Of Russian Trolls Using Several Machine Learning Models On Twitter Data, Kannan Neten Dharan Kannan Neten Dharan
A Comparative Study Of Russian Trolls Using Several Machine Learning Models On Twitter Data, Kannan Neten Dharan Kannan Neten Dharan
Theses
Ever since Russian trolls have been brought into light, their interference in the 2016 US Presidential elections has been monitored and studied thoroughly. These Russian trolls have fake accounts registered on several major social media sites to influence public opinions. Our work involves trying to discover patterns in these tweets and classifying them by using different machine learning approaches such as Support Vector Machines, Word2vec and neural network models, and then creating a benchmark to compare all the different models. Two machine learning models are developed for this purpose. The first one is used to classify any given specific tweet …
Tomato Puree Convective Heat Transfer Simulation Using Boussinesq Approximation, Matteo Fabbri
Tomato Puree Convective Heat Transfer Simulation Using Boussinesq Approximation, Matteo Fabbri
Theses
With the advance of new technologies, the food industries are requiring systems that allow to produce the desired products with faster rates at cheaper costs. In this case, the study was initiated with the purpose to better understand what happens inside a package containing tomato puree when this is heated above 343 K in a tunnel pasteurizer. If the fluid must reach the thermal and microbiological condition of “pasteurization”, the system must guarantee that the temperature (around 343° Kelvin) is kept for a certain time allowing to pasteurize even the cooler package’s fluid-particle. The faster the system can heat the …
A Taxonomic Revision Of The Genus Burmeistera (Campanulaceae) In Ecuador, Brock Mashburn
A Taxonomic Revision Of The Genus Burmeistera (Campanulaceae) In Ecuador, Brock Mashburn
Theses
The genus Burmeistera (Campanulaceae) consists of approximately 120 species of herbaceous trailing shrubs, found mostly in cloud forests from Guatemala to Peru. Taxonomic work is difficult for the genus because of its relatively recent diversification (5–12 mya) and the morphological lability of its species. The last monograph for the genus was completed in 1943, followed periodically by country-level treatments. For Ecuador, the most recent treatment of Burmeistera was nearly 40 years ago, in Stig Jeppesen’s 1981 treatment in the Flora of Ecuador. Jeppesen’s treatment recognized 32 species and subspecies. Since then, nine new species have been described and hundreds of …
Investigation Of Nest Predation As A Cause Of Turtle Population Declines On The Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma, Alexandra M. Shipman
Investigation Of Nest Predation As A Cause Of Turtle Population Declines On The Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge, Oklahoma, Alexandra M. Shipman
Theses
Investigators of a turtle population study spanning 19 years reported major declines in capture rates of red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta; 4.05 to 0.44) and Ouachita map turtles (Graptemys ouachitensis; 0.18 to 0.01) populations within Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Vian, Oklahoma. Although capture rates of alligator snapping turtles (Macrochelys temminckii) collected in 2016 were comparable to those found in a 1997-2000 study (0.33 compared to 0.35), there was concern that the cause(s) of observed declines in smaller, shorter-lived turtle species could also impact alligator snapping turtle populations, and may not yet be apparent due to differences in life histories, such …
Breastfeeding Discourse On Social Media, Andrea L. Whittemore
Breastfeeding Discourse On Social Media, Andrea L. Whittemore
Theses
Using feminist theory, this study focuses on discourse around breastfeeding on Twitter. Using a mixed-methods approach, I first examine the use of the hashtag #breastfeeding on Twitter to identify the networks driving the discourse. The discourse analysis was completed to explore how feminist principles and mothers’ agency were represented in tweets related to breastfeeding. The results, based on (N = 2,818) tweets, show that discourses are seen as breastfeeding as “natural” and “primary,” bottle feeding as second best, sexualization versus the natural functions of the breast, breastfeeding as a provocative act, mothering as a public or private nexus, breastfeeding related …

How To Avoid Collisions Between Cyclists And Motorists In Urban Areas, Yinan Luan
Theses
Using a bicycle as a means of transportation is becoming more common in cities. Protecting the safety of cyclists in complex urban environments is important.
This paper discusses user research, collisions analysis, and environment. Then, the article expounds by providing the different perspectives of cyclists and motorists. Analyzing the accidents of bicycles, how to effectively avoid collisions will significantly solve the safety problems of cyclists. In terms of solutions, this paper considers theoretical methods and existing products available. It then recommends a visibility system and proposes a visibility system to enhance visibility and avoid unpredictable behavior. The whole system makes …
Using The Diels-Alder Reaction In The Synthesis Of Biologically Interesting Molecules: Targets Of Opportunity, Ethan Michael Decicco
Using The Diels-Alder Reaction In The Synthesis Of Biologically Interesting Molecules: Targets Of Opportunity, Ethan Michael Decicco
Theses
This thesis is composed of reports on two projects, which are described separately in two chapters.
The first project described (Chapter 1) involves the synthesis of a series of molecules that contain a 1,4-dimethyl-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-dicarboxy-imide core structure. These types of molecules represent a class of analogues of the natural product cantharidin, a potent cytotoxic agent isolated from Meloidae insects. Cantharidin and cantharidin-like small molecules have been extensively studied in literature as potential leads in new anti-cancer medications. A series of 1,4-dimethyl-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3- dicarboxy-imides are also being investigated by researchers at Bristol-Meyers-Squibb (BMS) as prospective treatments of prostate cancer (PC). PC is the …
Parameter Estimation Of A Cardiac Model Using The Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter, Nathan Holt
Parameter Estimation Of A Cardiac Model Using The Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter, Nathan Holt
Theses
Cardiac arrhythmias are irregularities in the electrical activity in the heart; the electrical impulses in the heart become chaotic or disorganized, which can cause a possibly lethal problem to the contraction of the heart. In order to understand the dynamics of arrhythmias and to be able to predict and treat them, numerical models have been developed to capture the dynamics of the electrical impulses in the heart. In a clinical setting, optical mapping technologies — using cameras and voltage-sensitive dyes to capture the electrical impulses propagating across the heart — have been used to capture the dynamics of the electrical …
Elucidating The Effects Of Antibiotics On The Release Of Pal From Escherichia Coli, Leslie Gallardo
Elucidating The Effects Of Antibiotics On The Release Of Pal From Escherichia Coli, Leslie Gallardo
Theses
Sepsis, a life-threatening clinical condition affecting more than 1.5 million Americans per year, is defined as an over-exuberant immune response to infection. Currently, sepsis is the leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals, and the incidence of sepsis caused by Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), has been steadily increasing since the late 1990’s. While the detailed mechanism of sepsis is not fully understood, several bacterial components are thought to contribute to the hyper-inflammatory response in humans, including lipopolysaccharide endotoxin and several other lipoproteins. Past studies suggest that one of those E. coli lipoproteins, peptidoglycan-associated lipoprotein (Pal), might …
Performing Dna Ligation On A Low-Cost Inkjet-Printed Digital Microfluidic Device, Sari Houchaimi
Performing Dna Ligation On A Low-Cost Inkjet-Printed Digital Microfluidic Device, Sari Houchaimi
Theses
DNA Synthesis is a critical component in many biological and medical applications. Unfortunately, the production of DNA is tedious, time consuming, and expensive. To accelerate the production times and lower the cost, we take a closer look at the potential application of digital microfluidics for this process.
Microfluidics involves manipulating small volumes of fluid (microliters). It takes advantage of the relative dominance of forces such as surface tension and capillary forces at the submillimeter scale. This allows for lower reagent consumption and shorter reaction times. The technology is also portable and can accommodate for various functions to be performed on …
Important Considerations For Creative Professionals When Designing For Users With Mental Health Issues, Yiting Zhu
Important Considerations For Creative Professionals When Designing For Users With Mental Health Issues, Yiting Zhu
Theses
Creative professionals who design products, entertainment, application, websites, and even marketing are gradually beginning to realize the importance of evoking emotions and personalized communication to attract users’ attention and improve the satisfying experience. Emotional-based design can profoundly influence overall user experience since emotions affect decision making, attention, memory, and meaning. Designers often apply emotional design by two main approaches. The first is based on the modification of objects’ aesthetic appearances such as color, shape, and texture. The other focuses on engaging interaction mostly based on technology development (Van Gorp, Adams 2012). Both of these factors have significant effects on people …
Juveniles And The Criminal Justice System, Tayler Ruggero
Juveniles And The Criminal Justice System, Tayler Ruggero
Theses
Although juvenile crime rates have been decreasing rapidly in the last three decades, 2,805 children are still arrested each day in the United States (The State of America’s Children®, 2017). A child should get to grow up feeling safe and secure, with room to grow and develop with the support of their families, schools, and communities. Of those being arrested, they are mostly children of color and those that come from lower income communities. After these youths are incarcerated, they are at risk of physical and psychological abuse, sexual assault, and suicide. They also lack proper educational instruction while in …
Controllability Of Cardiac Alternans, Mark O. Ampofo
Controllability Of Cardiac Alternans, Mark O. Ampofo
Theses
An arrhythmia is a disorder in the heart that occurs due to irregular or abnormal heartbeats. There are many types of arrhythmias, some of which are harmless, but some, including ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, can be life-threatening. Certain arrhythmias are preceded by electrical alternans, which is a state characterized by beat-to-beat alternation in cellular action potential duration. Cardiac alternans may arise from instabilities in either voltage or intracellular calcium cycling. Although a number of techniques have been proposed to suppress alternans, most have focused on appropriately adding a new ionic current or adjusting the timing of pacing stimuli based on …
Effects Of Grazer Exclusion On Carbon Cycling In Created Freshwater Wetlands, Delanie Spangler
Effects Of Grazer Exclusion On Carbon Cycling In Created Freshwater Wetlands, Delanie Spangler
Theses
Wetland ecosystems play a significant role in the global carbon cycle, and yet are increasingly threatened by human development, climate change, and shifts in populations of large grazers. The loss of intact wetland systems heightens the need for effective wetland creation and restoration. However, wetland ecosystems are highly complex, complicating efforts to replace the functionality and delivery of ecosystem services associated with natural wetlands. Increasing waterfowl populations pose a threat to the development and persistence of created wetlands, largely through intensive grazing that can shift vegetation community structure or altogether limit desired plant establishment. This study capitalizes on a long-term …
Solid Phase Synthesis Of Modular Peptide-Based Targeted Molecular Imaging Agents, Xinyu Xu
Solid Phase Synthesis Of Modular Peptide-Based Targeted Molecular Imaging Agents, Xinyu Xu
Theses
Targeted molecular imaging agents (TMIA) are emerging as useful tools for early diagnosis of cancer and other diseases. These agents couple imaging agents such as near infrared fluorescence (NIRF) dyes or metallic contrast agents such as gadolinium (Gd) used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to targeting agents that bind to biomarker receptors in cancer cells. Our group has developed a modular synthesis of peptide-based TMIAs containing these two agents starting from “puzzle pieces”. Puzzle pieces, or modules, are amino acids with imaging groups bonded to their side chains. These are assembled together to form imaging peptides which are then conjugated …
Galatea: A Representation Of The Nature Of The Goddess, Courtney Flamm
Galatea: A Representation Of The Nature Of The Goddess, Courtney Flamm
Theses
This paper analyzes the figure Galatea, including the original narratives of Ovid’s Metamorphoses and the visual representations of her character. Examinations of these images and the circumstances that surround Galatea’s character, including her association with Venus, provide an in-depth exploration of Galatea’s relationship to the archetypal Mother Goddess and the role of feminine deities throughout history. As interpreted in the prehistoric past, the ancient Mother Goddess was worshipped as an all-encompassing deity in ancient Sumerian, Egyptian, Aztec, and Greek societies. Her duality as the source of life and death provided a superior nature to her surrounding male counterparts that was …
Exploring Neuromodulatory Systems For Dynamic Learning, Anurag Daram
Exploring Neuromodulatory Systems For Dynamic Learning, Anurag Daram
Theses
In a continual learning system, the network has to dynamically learn new tasks from few samples throughout its lifetime. It is observed that neuromodulation acts as a key factor in continual and dynamic learning in the central nervous system. In this work, the neuromodulatory plasticity is embedded with dynamic learning architectures. The network has an inbuilt modulatory unit that regulates learning depending on the context and the internal state of the system, thus rendering the networks with the ability to self modify their weights. In one of the proposed architectures, ModNet, a modulatory layer is introduced in a random projection …

Nmr Studies Of Translational And Rotational Diffusion Of A Phase Separating Eye Lens Protein: Bovine Γb-Crystallin, Aaron Thomas Fadden
Nmr Studies Of Translational And Rotational Diffusion Of A Phase Separating Eye Lens Protein: Bovine Γb-Crystallin, Aaron Thomas Fadden
Theses
Cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. Cataracts can occur when proteins (known as “crystallins”) in the cytoplasm of the eye lens phase separate or associate, creating local fluctuations in the refractive index of the lens. Bovine γB-crystallin is analogous (in sequence, structure, and function) to the human γD-crystallin and can be isotopically labeled during growth with 13C and 15N when expressed in Escherichia coli. In this work, the two most important Brownian motions, rotational and translational diffusion, were measured under various temperatures and concentrations in an effort to better understand the intermolecular interactions and …
Habitat And Conservation Suitability Assessment For Shrubland Birds In Monroe County, New York, Rachel Allen
Habitat And Conservation Suitability Assessment For Shrubland Birds In Monroe County, New York, Rachel Allen
Theses
Shrublands and successional ecosystems are of special interest to land managers and conservation groups because to be maintained, they must be disturbed periodically. Shrubland birds rely on variation in the landscape, regular disturbance, and ephemeral patches of shrubs for breeding, foraging, and nesting. Many of these avian species are in decline, so monitoring and mapping shrublands is necessary for future conservation and management strategies (DeGraaf & Yamasaki, 2003; Howard et al., 2015; Litvaitis, 2003). Large proportions of shrubland bird populations rely on shrublands in the northeast states for breeding habitat, and the identification and land use monitoring of these regions …
Light Extraction Efficiency Of Nanostructured Iii-Nitride Light-Emitting Diodes, Yu Kee Ooi
Light Extraction Efficiency Of Nanostructured Iii-Nitride Light-Emitting Diodes, Yu Kee Ooi
Theses
III-nitride materials have been extensively employed in a wide variety of applications attributed to their compact sizes, lower operating voltage, higher energy efficiency and longer lifetime. Although tremendous progress has been reported for III-nitride light-emitting diodes (LEDs), further enhancement in the external quantum effciency (η_EQE), which depends upon internal quantum efficiency, injection efficiency and light extraction efficiency (η_extraction), is essential in realizing next generation high-efficiency ultraviolet (UV) and visible LEDs. Several challenges such as charge separation issue, large threading dislocation density, large refractive index contrast between GaN and air, and anisotropic emission at high Al-composition AlGaN quantum wells in the …
Biorefinery Pathways For Institutional Food Waste, Shwe Sin Win
Biorefinery Pathways For Institutional Food Waste, Shwe Sin Win
Theses
Every day, enormous quantities of nutritious food are wasted in landfills across the globe. Agriculture and food production use intensive amounts of water, chemicals, and land, rendering food waste as a major environmental and economic concern. New York State is currently considering legislation that would ban landfill disposal of food waste produced by large institutional generators, such as universities, hospitals, sports venues, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. Institutions have concentrated populations which generate predictable volumes of food waste and waste cooking oil. At the same time, these populations need heat, electricity, vehicle fuel, and soap. Developing a biorefinery system offers great …
Hyperspectral Imaging Evaluation Of The Freshness Of Mushrooms (Agaricus Bisporus), Meera Hmoud Saeed Aldhaheri
Hyperspectral Imaging Evaluation Of The Freshness Of Mushrooms (Agaricus Bisporus), Meera Hmoud Saeed Aldhaheri
Theses
Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a non-destructive analytical tool that can be used for sensing multiple attributes of foods. This thesis evaluates the application of HSI for measuring the freshness of the mushroom Agaricus bisporus (A. bisporus) in comparison with traditional seed methods. Three separate experiments were performed with 135 mushroom samples stored either in packed or unpacked conditions for 11 days. The overall results suggest that the HSI spectral region between 400 and 1000 nm is suitable for the inspection of mushroom freshness. Two distinguishing variables that aligned with physicochemical and microbiological analysis were recognized. Moisture loss was the main …
The Role Of Parathyroid Hormone 1 Receptor (Pth1r) Signaling In Gastric Epithelial Homeostasis, Maram Maher Al-Hasan
The Role Of Parathyroid Hormone 1 Receptor (Pth1r) Signaling In Gastric Epithelial Homeostasis, Maram Maher Al-Hasan
Theses
In the stomach, the epithelial stem cells are responsible for glandular homeostasis. These stem cells continuously undergo cellular proliferation and differentiation to balance the death of senescent cells. Studies conducted on gastric cancers showed a significant increase in parathyroid hormone-like hormone (PTHLH). Moreover, both PTHLH along with parathyroid hormone (PTH) act as endogenous ligands for parathyroid hormone 1 receptor (PTH1R) which belongs to family B of G- protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). This receptor functions by mediating many different signaling pathways and the most studied pathway is the stimulation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) as a second messenger.
There are very few …

Deep Learning Methods For 3d Aerial And Satellite Data, Mohammed A. Yousefhussien
Deep Learning Methods For 3d Aerial And Satellite Data, Mohammed A. Yousefhussien
Theses
Recent advances in digital electronics have led to an overabundance of observations from electro-optical (EO) imaging sensors spanning high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution. This unprecedented volume, variety, and velocity is overwhelming our capacity to manage and translate that data into actionable information. Although decades of image processing research have taken the human out of the loop for many important tasks, the human analyst is still an irreplaceable link in the image exploitation chain, especially for more complex tasks requiring contextual understanding, memory, discernment, and learning. If knowledge discovery is to keep pace with the growing availability of data, new …
Multiscale Fluid-Structure Interaction Models Development And Applications To The 3d Elements Of A Human Cardiovascular System, Yogesh Karnam
Multiscale Fluid-Structure Interaction Models Development And Applications To The 3d Elements Of A Human Cardiovascular System, Yogesh Karnam
Theses
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the number one cause of death of humans in the United States and worldwide. Accurate, non-invasive, and cheaper diagnosis methods have always been on demand as cardiovascular monitoring increase in prevalence. The primary causes of the various forms of these CVDs are atherosclerosis and aneurysms in the blood vessels. Current noninvasive methods (i.e., statistical/medical) permit fairly accurate detection of the disease once clinical symptoms are suggestive of the existence of hemodynamic disorders. Therefore, the recent surge of hemodynamics models facilitated the prediction of cardiovascular conditions.
The hemodynamic modeling of a human circulatory system involves varying levels …
Transferring Generalized Knowledge From Physics-Based Simulation To Clinical Domain, Mohammed Abdullatif Alawad
Transferring Generalized Knowledge From Physics-Based Simulation To Clinical Domain, Mohammed Abdullatif Alawad
Theses
A primary factor for the success of machine learning is the quality of labeled training data. However, in many fields, labeled data can be costly, difficult, or even impossible to acquire. In comparison, computer simulation data can now be generated at a much higher abundance with a much lower cost.
These simulation data could potentially solve the problem of data deficiency in many machine learning tasks. Nevertheless, due to model assumptions, simplifications and possible errors, there is always a discrepancy between simulated and real data. This discrepancy needs to be addressed when transferring the knowledge from simulation to real data. …
Effect Of Religion On Domestic Violence Perpetration Among American Adults, Cassidy Mitchell
Effect Of Religion On Domestic Violence Perpetration Among American Adults, Cassidy Mitchell
Theses
After Hirschi and Stark’s Hellfire and Delinquency (1969), researchers have been seeking to determine whether there is a correlational link between religion and crime. This paper seeks to add to the literature by correlating domestic violence with four elements of religion (use of belief to solve everyday problems, prayer frequency, religious importance, and attendance of worship) that correspond with the four elements of Hirschi’s social control theory (attachment, commitment, belief, and involvement, respectively) (1969). It also includes male victims of domestic violence among female victims, unlike most previous literature. Using a series of logistic regression models, only attendance of worship, …
