The Hotel Management Simulation/Game: An Evaluation Of Game Mechanics And Learning Outcomes, Angel E. Dominguez
Theses
Hospitality education, as a vocationally oriented field of study, must provide the student not only with theoretical concepts, but also with a series of skills that the student will use in the work place. These skills include problem analysis and decision making, team building, and the relationship of the hotel business variables (Occupancy, Profits and Guest Satisfaction). Simulation gaming techniques are thought to be very effective methods to develop these skills. In simulations participants imitate actions required on the job and are actively involved in the processes of learning and skills acquisition. The Hotel Management Simulation/Game is a simulation technique …

Empowerment: "Lip Service" Or "Guest Service", Earle Lindel Bowman
Theses
The purpose of this study was to ascertain indications of hotel operators' understanding and application of empowerment. While there was a large amount of literature available on empowerment, there were few writings specific to the hotel industry. Little, if any, research exists on empowerment usage in the hospitality industry. Also, the term empowerment is poorly defined. The study additionally sought information on which job positions were affected and the completeness of implementation of empowerment programs. The pilot study used a deep probe technique to develop information from operating heads of full service hotels. It found preliminary indications that the concepts …

Factors Contributing To Airline Insolvency, Richard M. Lagiewski
Factors Contributing To Airline Insolvency, Richard M. Lagiewski
Theses
This study explores the problematic issues that caused Chapter 11 and bankruptcy filings during the period of March, 1989 to January, 1992. Unlike the approximately 85 airlines that went bankrupt during deregulation, 4 of the 6 airlines studied were original trunk carriers. The two remaining were, at that time, the only two surviving airlines born during deregulation. The data of these carriers was tracked over a thirteen year period. The tracking consisted of graphing financial / performance variables over time and then the construction of a matrix presenting the issues discovered in the literature search. In tracking their problematic issues …

Theses
The combination of glass vial, elastomeric stopper, and aluminum crimp seal represents one of the principal packaging systems used to package diagnostic reagents, ophthalmic and veterinary medicines, and pharmaceutical products. This work states that elastomeric flat liners are an alternative to traditional stoppers. To confirm this position, several comparative moisture transmission evaluations are conducted to contrast the barrier performance of glued flat liners against stoppers in continuous thread closures on glass vials. After a review of several standard packaging integrity testing methods, this thesis demonstrates the use of coulometric titration as an alternative package system testing methodology. Coulometric titrators are …

How Cultural Values Affect Valuation, Joel Jon Forman
How Cultural Values Affect Valuation, Joel Jon Forman
Theses
The purpose of this study is to describe the factors which affect numismatic appraisals, particularly from a valuation perspective. One of the most important considerations is the role culture played in helping determine value. Much of our knowledge of the ancient world (China, Babylon, Egypt, Israel, Greece, Rome, Persia, India and other civilizations) is derived from the surviving coinage. The coins from these bygone eras reveal the cultural, religious and moral values which played an incredible role in shaping our modern high technological society. Some of these ancient values are reflected in present day coinage.
This study will carefully examine …

The Rising Trend Of Sensationalized, Tabloid Television News Within The Traditional Evening News Format, Kristin Erin Gerber
The Rising Trend Of Sensationalized, Tabloid Television News Within The Traditional Evening News Format, Kristin Erin Gerber
Theses
Research shows that television is regarded by the public as its main source of information about politics, and current events and also entertainment. While most studies show that television has the ability to adequately inform people about entertaining events and personalities, more and more viewers of television news are becoming less knowledgeable about legitimate issues which have a great impact on society . In essence, people who claim that television is their main source of news, know less about a greater number of topics.
Numerous studies, as illustrated in this thesis, also show that the tactics used in syndicated "sleaze" …
Ramsey Numbers Involving A Triangle: Theory And Algorithms, Xia Jin
Ramsey Numbers Involving A Triangle: Theory And Algorithms, Xia Jin
Theses
Ramsey theory studies the existence of highly regular patterns in large sets of objects. Given two graphs G and H, the Ramsey number R(G, H) is defined to be the smallest integer n such that any graph F with n or more vertices must contain G, or F must contain H. Albeit beautiful, the problem of determining Ramsey numbers is considered to be very difficult. We focus our attention on efficient algorithms for determining Ram sey numbers involving a triangle: R(K3 , G). With the help of theoretical tools, the search space is reduced by using different pruning techniques and …

I have strived to stay loyal to this idea during my thesis, because any superficial attempts at representing my views on racial subjects have fallen short of honesty. An honest representation of qany subject cones form the heart, and is a fresh and exciting image. I motivated myself to produce as much work as I was phsically capable of while striving to maintain a high level of aesthetic quality. In order to reduce confusion and convey my ideas clearly, I have …
Optimal Morphological Filters, Vivek Swarnakar
Optimal Morphological Filters, Vivek Swarnakar
Theses
The design of optimal morphological filters, in the binary or gray scale domain, involves a computationally intense search procedure that, in practice, can be intractable. The present work provides a practical method for optimal morphological filter design that is based on the statistical estimation theory and lattice theory. A link is made between optimal morphological filter and the conditional probability distribution. For a given conditional probability distribution a morphological filter may or may not exist. If a morphological filter exists, then the method designs the one that is optimal among morphological and all other filters. If an optimal morphological filter …
