The Conservative And Liberal Debate Over The Success Or Failure Of Welfare Programs In The United States, John L. Rhoads

Theses

This thesis will focus on the debate between liberal and conservative authors concerning the success or failure of the welfare state in the United States of America .

During the 1960's, government involvement expanded greatly through President Lyndon Johnson's great society programs . These programs were designed to alleviate poverty and promote self reliance amongst the poorest segments in society. Overall these programs were accepted by both the general populus and those in government as the morally "right" thing to do.

As time went by, and expenditures and involvement increased, debate surfaced as to how well these programs were doing …

The Investigation Of The Needs Of Contemporary Woman And Development Of The Business Plan For Time For You, Ltd., Paula P. Macmann

Theses

This project focuses on the changing roles - and subsequent needs - of today's women.

Society slowly adapts to change; consequently, the responses to women's needs result in some being met, some only being addressed while others are completely ignored.

Still. changes in society have afforded unique opportunities for today's woman. Associated with these opportunities comes challenges. Segments of society continue to hold gender based stereotypical beliefs limiting women to traditional roles. But a new version of women's potential has emerged in the last quarter century. These new attitudes open up a more expanded scope of roles. They also result …

The Unemployed Bring More Than Career Needs To Career Counseling, Gerald Edward Curtin Jan 1995

The Unemployed Bring More Than Career Needs To Career Counseling, Gerald Edward Curtin

Theses

For much of its hi story career counseling has focused on the career needs of the unemployed (Herr, 1989). Career concerns were more oriented to economic health, to change of an occupation, to the development of pre-vocational ski I ls and the preparation for work. Over the years an ever increasing amount of research has indicated the unemployed suffer many personal needs as a consequence of unemployment (Borgen & Amundsen, 1984; Kasi, Gore, & Cobb, 1975) in addition to career needs. These personal needs are both physical and mental (Banks & Jackson, 1982; O'Brien & Kabanoff, 1979).

In recent years …

Self-Directed Work Teams: The New Wave For American Corporations, Janetta K, Cole

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of self-directed or empowered work teams and on preparing a plan to implement the empowered work team in the customer Contact Center in Wentzville, Missouri.

Self-directed work teams are a relatively new concept in the workforce and could be the 90s version of the total quality concept. The philosophy is that first line management takes a step backward and the workgroup virtually leads themselves. Employees are empowered to make the decisions and then act on those decisions to produce a better quality product than before. The concept is designed around teamwork both from …

Evolution Of The Workplace: Where Do We Go From Here?, Patricia L. Brockmeyer Jan 1995

Evolution Of The Workplace: Where Do We Go From Here?, Patricia L. Brockmeyer

Theses

This paper will take the reader on a fascinating journey through the workplace from colonial times to the decade of 2000+. It will be a tumultuous roller coaster ride with victories and sacrifices for both employees and employers. It will begin with the birth of our country when labor was largely concentrated either in agriculture, or people were self employed in retail, or skilled trades. It will identify the somewhat nefarious methods for obtaining servants, from Europe and Africa when indentured servants and slaves provided cheap labor.

Soon the industrial revolution invaded the shores of the new nation and workers …

A Question Of Balance: Constructing A Mobile Software Simulator, Michael Wulf Axelrod Jan 1995

A Question Of Balance: Constructing A Mobile Software Simulator, Michael Wulf Axelrod

Theses

Initial inspiration for this project comes from the world of moving sculptures called mobiles. Artists such as Alexander Calder have pioneered the way by showing the world that mobiles can do more than entertain infants. This project brings the world of moving scultures to the computer and extends the artistic role mobiles can play for the average person. The primary objective of this project was to design and implement a tool to create and visualize simple mobiles. The application was to be flexible and easy to use. So easy in fact that a child should be able to construct a …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Self-Reported Child Sexual Abuse History And Responses On The Beck Depression Inventory, Nancy K. Gongaware

Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine responses on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) between depressed women with a self-reported history of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA) and depressed women who did not report such a history. The question to be studied was whether the responses on the BDI would generally be the same regardless of the client's abuse history. Forty women seeking treatment for depression at a Midwestern counseling center served as subjects for this study. They completed a self-report questionnaire, which included an item on abuse history, and the BDI. The group reporting a history of CSA had …

Illness Behavior In Meniere's Disease Patients, Dianne Riesenmy Dec 1994

Illness Behavior In Meniere's Disease Patients, Dianne Riesenmy

Theses

In order to determine whether or not vertiginous and nonvertiginous Meniere's disease patients differ in regard to certain emotional and psychosocial attitudes, ideas, affects, and attributions related to illness behavior, 30 Meniere's disease patients (16 vertiginous; 14 nonvertiginous) completed the Illness Behavior Questionnaire (IBO) either at a Meniere's support group meeting or through the mail. Comparison of sample mean scores revealed that the vertiginous group showed greater hypochondriasis and affective disturbance than did the nonvertiginous group. The nonvertiginous group demonstrated greater denial of life stressors not related to illness and greater psychological (rather than somatic) perception. The same group showed …

Designing A Typeface, Margaret Luise Koschembahr Nov 1994

Designing A Typeface, Margaret Luise Koschembahr

Theses

The purpose of this project was to design a typeface, using digital methods, and in so doing to explore the use of current type design software. In this project, letterforms that were originally produced by hand with a pen were translated into electronic data, taking the final form of a digital typeface. Photographic images of manuscript letterforms were enlarged; from the enlarged letterforms hand-rendered outlines were created. These outlines were scanned electronically and imported into a type design software program. Digital outlines of each character were created, from which a PostScript typeface was generated and printed. The result of the project …

Passive Radiosonde Transducer Design For Remote Pressure Sensing Applications, Yang Gao

Theses

Intracranial pressure can be measured to accuracies within 1 milliTorr using passive microtransponders that are micromachined using silicon as a base technology. These microtransponders can operate with either a dual-oscillator or a phase-locked loop frequency scanned control system.

The current work describes the design of a totally implantable microsensor for biomedical applications with the aim to monitor and measure the epidural intracranial pressure . The implanting microsensor is basically an RLC device in which capacitance varies with fluid pressure. The resonant frequency of RLC Series connected device varies with chemically etched diaphragm electrode spacing and thereby measures the variations with …

Correlation Between Tidal Volume Measured By Spirometry And Impedance Pneumography, Krithika Seshadri Oct 1994

Correlation Between Tidal Volume Measured By Spirometry And Impedance Pneumography, Krithika Seshadri

Theses

In this study, an alternative method, impedance pneumography was used to measure the respiration volume. The respiration volume was measured both by using a conventional spirometer and an impedance pneumograph, and evaluated quantitatively in 17 subjects using linear and nonlinear regression algorithms.

Data were collected from 17 normal, healthy subjects during rest and paced breathing conditions. A technique was developed to measure tidal volume by impedance pneumography. The respiration volume measured by the spirometer was correlated with the volume measured by the pneumograph. Different electrode positions and postures were included in the study to determine the position and posture which …

Continuous Monitoring Of Volatile Organic Compounds In Air Emission Using Membrane Extraction Microtrap Gc System, Xin Zhang Oct 1994

Continuous Monitoring Of Volatile Organic Compounds In Air Emission Using Membrane Extraction Microtrap Gc System, Xin Zhang

Theses

A novel method for continuous monitoring volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air at trace level is presented. A membrane module and a microtrap were used along with gas chromatographic analysis. The membrane module consisted of a bundle of silicone rubber hollow fibers and separated the VOCs from the gaseous stream. The microtrap which is a very small adsorbent trap played the roles of preconcentrator and injector. The VOCs selectively permeate across the membrane into a strip gas in the membrane module. Before entering the GC column, the VOCs are trapped and concentrated by the microtrap. Desorption of the VOCs is …

Artificial Dielectric Materials : Synthesis And Optical Characterization Of Small Metal Clusters Embedded In Polymeric Matrix, Nazneen Karim Shilpee

Theses

This study is concerned with the fabrication of films made of gold, nickel, and silicon clusters dispersed in a polymeric matrix. The films were fabricated by use of metal or semiconductor sputtering and plasma polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate monomer in a capacitively coupled RF (13.56 MHz) sputtering system. Optical transmittance and optical reflectance were measured as a function of wavelength. The optical absorption of metal or silicon clusters was studied as a function of cluster size. Cluster size and content were determined from Transmission Electron Micrographs (TEM). The absorption band resulting from a plasma resonance in the clusters was found …

Autonomic Nervous System Evaluation Using Time-Frequency Analysis, Sanjay Fernando Oct 1994

Autonomic Nervous System Evaluation Using Time-Frequency Analysis, Sanjay Fernando

Theses

Spectral analysis of heartrate variability (HRV) provided an estimate of the sympathetic and parasympatheticinfluences on heart rate without drugs or other invasive procedures. However, there are many situations where heart rate changed rapidlyover time and the control of those changes was of considerable interest.Time-frequency analysis was utilized to expand the concept of spectralanalysis of HRV to describe changes in vagal tone and sympatho-vagalbalance as a function of time. As a result the assessment of the autonomicnervous system during rapid changes in heart rate was made.

There were three advantagesto calculating vagal tone and sympatho-vagal balance by using timefrequencyanalysis. First, vagal tone …
